1. Safety and Efficacy Outcomes From a Single-Center Study of Image-Guided Percutaneous Microwave Ablation for Primary and Metastatic Lung Malignancy

Abstract

Introduction: Image-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) is becoming a more common treatment option for patients with primary and metastatic lung malignancies. Nevertheless, there is limited literature on the safety and efficacy of MWA compared with standard-of-care therapy, including surgical resection and radiation. This study will report the long-term outcomes after MWA for pulmonary malignancies and investigate the factors related to efficacy, including lesion size, location, and ablation power. Methods: Retrospective single-center study analyzing 93 patients who underwent percutaneous MWA for primary or metastatic lung malignancies. Outcomes included immediate technical success, local tumor recurrence, overall survival, disease-specific survival, and complications. Results: At a single institution, 190 lesions (81 primary and 109 metastatic) were treated in 93 patients. Immediate technical success was achieved in all cases. Freedom from local recurrence was 87.6%, 75.3%, and 69.2% and overall survival was 87.7%, 76.2%, and 74.3% at 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years, respectively. Disease-specific survival was 92.6%, 81.8%, and 81.8%. The most common complication was pneumothorax, which occurred in 54.7% (104 of 190) of procedures, with 35.2% (67 of 190) requiring a chest tube. No life-threatening complications occurred. Conclusions: Percutaneous MWA seems safe and effective for treatment of primary and metastatic lung malignancies and should be considered for patients with limited metastatic burden and lesions less than 3 cm in size.

International audience; The digital revolution and the so-called “big data” phenomenon invite the social sciences to question in a new light their relationship to knowledge and learning. This research note proposes to extend this debate to the field of comparative politics, by discussing the epistemological contributions of these new digital approaches. At the same time, the article invites us to question the stakes and limits of these new fields and tools, by reinscribing them in the scientific debates inherent to comparative politics.; La révolution numérique et le phénomène des « big data » invitent les sciences sociales à questionner sous un jour nouveau leur rapport à la connaissance et au savoir. Cette note de recherche propose d’élargir ce débat au champ de la politique comparée, en discutant des apports épistémologiques de ces nouvelles approches numériques. L’article invite dans le même temps à questionner les enjeux et limites de ces nouveaux terrains et outils, en les réinscrivant dans certains débats scientifiques inhérents à la politique comparée.

Abstract

We introduce gym-DSSAT, a gym environment for crop management tasks, that is easy to use for training Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents. gym-DSSAT is based on DSSAT, a state-of-the-art mechanistic crop growth simulator. We modify DSSAT so that an external software agent can interact with it to control the actions performed in a crop field during a growing season. The RL environment provides predefined decision problems without having to manipulate the complex crop simulator. We report encouraging preliminary results on a use case of nitrogen fertilization for maize. This work opens up opportunities to explore new sustainable crop management strategies with RL, and provides RL researchers with an original set of challenging tasks to investigate.

Abstract

Brouwer et al. present preclinical evidence in support of a COVID-19 vaccine candidate, designed as a self-assembling two-component protein nanoparticle displaying multiple copies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which induces strong neutralizing antibody responses and protects from high-dose SARS-CoV-2 challenge.The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is continuing to disrupt personal lives, global healthcare systems, and economies. Hence, there is an urgent need for a vaccine that prevents viral infection, transmission, and disease. Here, we present a two-component protein-based nanoparticle vaccine that displays multiple copies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Immunization studies show that this vaccine induces potent neutralizing antibody responses in mice, rabbits, and cynomolgus macaques. Abstract

La résolution d’un problème de déecision séquentielle en conditions réelles s’appuie très souvent sur l’utilisation d’un simulateur qui reproduit ces conditions réelles. Nous introduisons un nouvel environnement pour l’apprentissage par renforcement (AR) qui propose des tâches d’apprentissage réalistes pour la conduite de cultures. gym-DSSAT est une interface gym avec le simulateur de cultures Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT), un simulateur de haute fidélité. DSSAT a été développé durant les 30 dernières années et est largement reconnu par les agronomes. gym-DSSAT propose des simulations prédéfinies, basées sur des expérimentations au champ avec du maïs. L’environnement est aussi simple à utiliser que n’importe quel autre environnement gym. Nous proposons des performances de base dans l’environnement en utilisant des algorithmes d’AR conventionnels. Nous décrivons également brièvement comment le simulateur monolithique DSSAT, codé en Fortran, a été transformé en un environnement d’AR en Python. Notre approche est générique et peut être appliquée à des simulateurs similaires. Quoique très préliminaires, les premiers résultats expérimentaux indiquent que l’AR peut aider les chercheurs à rendre les pratiques de fertilisation et d’irrigation plus durables. Addressing a real world sequential decision problem with Reinforcement Learning (RL) usually starts with the use of a simulated environment that mimics real conditions. We present a novel open source RL environment for realistic crop management tasks. gym-DSSAT is agym interface to the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT), a high fidelity crop simulator. DSSAT has been developped over the last 30 years and is widely recognized by agronomists. gym-DSSAT comes with predefined simulations based on real world maize experiments.The environment is as easy to use as any gym environment. We provide performance baselines using basic RL algorithms. We also briefly outline how the monolithic DSSAT simulator written in Fortran has been turned into a Python RL environment. Our methodology is generic and may be applied to similar simulators. We report on very preliminary experimental results which suggest that RL can help researchers to improve sustainability of fertilization and irrigation practices.

Abstract

International audience; Background: Use of a tissue-engineering chamber (TEC) for growth of fat flap is a promising approach for breast reconstruction. Here, we evaluated in a preclinical model the effects of radiation on adipose tissue growth either before or after 3D-printed bioresorbable TEC implantation. Methods: Twenty-eight female Wistar rats were distributed into three groups: TEC implantation as nonirradiated controls (G1), TEC insertion followed by irradiation 3 weeks later (G2), and irradiation 6 weeks before TEC insertion (G3). G2 and G3 received 33.3 Gy in nine sessions of 3.7 Gy. Growth of the fat flap was monitored via magnetic resonance imaging. At 6 months after implantation, fat flaps and TECs were harvested for analysis. Results: Irradiation did not alter the physicochemical features of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-based TECs. Compared with G1, fat flap growth was significantly reduced by 1.6 times in irradiated G2 and G3 conditions. In G2 and G3, fat flaps consisted of mature viable adipocytes sustained by CD31+ vascular cells. However, 37% (3 of 8) of the G2 irradiated adipose tissues presented a disorganized architecture invaded by connective tissues with inflammatory CD68 + cells, and the presence of fibrosis was observed. Conclusions: Overall, this preclinical study does not reveal any major obstacle to the use of TEC in a radiotherapy context. Although irradiation reduces the growth of fat flap under the TEC by reducing adipogenesis and inducing inconsistent fibrosis, it does not impact flap survival and vascularization. These elements must be taken into account if radiotherapy is proposed before or after TEC-based breast reconstruction.

Abstract

Microbes play a critical role in plant litter decomposition and influence the fate of carbon in rivers and riparian zones. When decomposing low-nutrient plant litter, microbes acquire nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from the environment (i.e., nutrient immobilization), and this process is potentially sensitive to nutrient loading and changing climate. Nonetheless, environmental controls on immobilization are poorly understood because rates are also influenced by plant litter chemistry, which is coupled to the same environmental factors. Here we used a standardized, low-nutrient organic matter substrate (cotton strips) to quantify nutrient immobilization at 100 paired stream and riparian sites representing 11 biomes worldwide. Immobilization rates varied by three orders of magnitude, were greater in rivers than riparian zones, and were strongly correlated to decomposition rates. In rivers, P immobilization rates were controlled by surface water phosphate concentrations, but N immobilization rates were not related to inorganic N. The N:P of immobilized nutrients was tightly constrained to a molar ratio of 10:1 despite wide variation in surface water N:P. Immobilization rates were temperature-dependent in riparian zones but not related to temperature in rivers. However, in rivers nutrient supply ultimately controlled whether microbes could achieve the maximum expected decomposition rate at a given temperature. Collectively, we demonstrated that exogenous nutrient supply and immobilization are critical control points for decomposition of organic matter.

Abstract

Significance A detailed characterization of viral load kinetics and its association with disease evolution is key to understand the virus pathogenesis, identify high-risk patients, and design better treatment strategies. We here analyze the mortality and the virological information collected in 655 hospitalized patients, including 284 with longitudinal measurements, and we build a mathematical model of virus dynamics and survival. We predict that peak viral load occurs 1 d before symptom onset, on average, and that dynamics of decline after peak is slower in older patients. Viral load dynamics after hospital admission is an independent predictor of the risk of death, suggesting that prolonged viral shedding of high quantities of virus is associated with poor outcome in this population., The characterization of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral kinetics in hospitalized patients and its association with mortality is unknown. We analyzed death and nasopharyngeal viral kinetics in 655 hospitalized patients from the prospective French COVID cohort. The model predicted a median peak viral load that coincided with symptom onset. Patients with age ≥65 y had a smaller loss rate of infected cells, leading to a delayed median time to viral clearance occurring 16 d after symptom onset as compared to 13 d in younger patients (P < 10−4). In multivariate analysis, the risk factors associated with mortality were age ≥65 y, male gender, and presence of chronic pulmonary disease (hazard ratio [HR] > 2.0). Using a joint model, viral dynamics after hospital admission was an independent predictor of mortality (HR = 1.31, P < 10−3). Finally, we used our model to simulate the effects of effective pharmacological interventions on time to viral clearance and mortality. A treatment able to reduce viral production by 90% upon hospital admission would shorten the time to viral clearance by 2.0 and 2.9 d in patients of age

« Pour l’instant, vous n’êtes même pas au second tour dans les sondages. » C’est ainsi qu’avait réagi Anne-Sophie Lapix, dans le journal télévisé de France 2 du 30 septembre, face à Xavier Bertrand. Ce dernier venait de déclarer être « le mieux placé » pour « porter ce changement ». Cette scène nous rappelle que Xavier Bertrand a construit en partie sa pré-campagne présidentielle autour de sa supposée « puissance sondagière ». Or, alors qu’il a été battu dès le premier tour de la primaire interne aux Républicains, cette défaite pourrait s’expliquer par son incapacité à apparaître comme un candidat significativement mieux placé que ses autres concurrents à droite. C’est en tout cas ce que suggère une analyse des sondages pré-électoraux réalisés entre septembre et novembre 2021.

Abstract

International audience; The rapidity of the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis (IC) is crucial to allow the early introduction of antifungal therapy that dramatically increases the survival rate of patients. Early diagnosis is unfortunately often delayed because Candida blood culture, the gold standard diagnostic test, is positive in only 50% of cases of IC and takes several days to obtain this result. Complementary non-culture-based methods relying on the detection of Candida cell wall polysaccharides in the serum, β-glucans and mannans, by enzymatic and immunological reagents have been successfully developed to allow a more efficient patients care. We have previously demonstrated that detection of circulating glycans by mass spectrometry could provide a reliable and cost-effective early diagnosis method called MS-DS for Mass Spectrometry of Di-Saccharide. Here, by comparing patient's sera and Candida albicans strains deficient in carbohydrates synthesis, we demonstrate that trehalose derived from fungal metabolism can be specifically targeted by MS-DS to allow early diagnosis. In particular, the use of C. albicans strains deficient in the synthesis of trehalose synthesizing enzymes Tps1 and Tps2 show that MS-DS results were correlated to the metabolism of trehalose. Finally, we demonstrate that the performance of the IC diagnosis can be significantly improved by using high resolution mass spectrometry, which opens new perspectives in the management of the disease.

Abstract

In many clinical applications, evolution of a longitudinal marker is censored by an event occurrence, and, symmetrically, event occurrence can be influenced by the longitudinal marker evolution. In such frameworks joint modeling is of high interest. The Joint Latent Class Model (JLCM) allows to stratify the population into groups (classes) of patients that are homogeneous both with respect to the evolution of a longitudinal marker and to the occurrence of an event; this model is widely employed in real-life applications. However, the finite sample-size properties of this model remain poorly explored. In the present paper, a simulation study is carried out to assess the impact of the number of individuals, of the censoring rate and of the degree of class separation on the finite sample size properties of the JLCM. A real-life application from the neurology domain is also presented. This study assesses the precision of class membership prediction and the impact of covariates omission on the model parameter estimates. Simulation study reveals some departures from normality of the model for survival sub-model parameters. The censoring rate and the number of individuals impact the relative bias of parameters, especially when the classes are weakly distinguished. In real-data application the observed heterogeneity on individual profiles in terms of a longitudinal marker evolution and of the event occurrence remains after adjusting to clinically relevant and available covariates; CONCLUSION: The JLCM properties have been evaluated. We have illustrated the discovery in practice and highlights the usefulness of the joint models with latent classes in this kind of data even with pre-specified factors. We made some recommendations for the use of this model and for future research. 21;1

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is limited data regarding the role for systemic treatment in patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis. METHODS: PRODIGE 21 was a multicentric prospective non-comparative randomized trial. Patients were randomized to receive sorafenib (Arm A), pravastatin (Arm B), sorafenib-pravastatin (Arm C) combination, or best supportive care (Arm D). Primary endpoint was time to progression (TTP), secondary endpoints included safety and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: 160 patients were randomized and 157 patients were included in the final analysis. 86% of patients were BCLC C and 55% had macrovascular invasion. The safety profiles of the drugs were as expected. Median TTP was 3.5, 2.8, 2.0 and 2.2 months in arms A, B, C and D, respectively, but analysis was limited by the number of patients deceased without radiological progression (59%). Median OS was similar between the four arms: 3.8 [95% CI: 2.4-6.5], 3.1 [95% CI: 1.9-4.3], 4.0 [95% CI: 3.2-5.5] and 3.5 months [95% CI: 2.2-5.4] in arms A, B, C and D, respectively. Median OS was 4.0 months [95% CI: 3.3-5.5] for patients treated with sorafenib, vs 2.9 months [95% CI: 2.2-3.9] for patients not treated with sorafenib. In patients with ALBI grade 1/2, median OS was 6.1 months [95% CI: 3.8-8.3] in patients treated with sorafenib vs 3.1 months [95% CI: 1.9-4.8] for patients not treated with sorafenib. CONCLUSION: In the overall Child-Pugh B population, neither sorafenib nor pravastatin seemed to provide benefit. In the ALBI grade 1/2 sub-population, our trial suggests potential benefit of sorafenib. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was referenced in clinicaltrials.gov (NCT01357486).

Abstract

International audience; The theory of structural homology between the social space and the space of lifestyles is regularly called into question by research highlighting the attenuation of dispositional factors –cultural capital, economic capital, social origin, etc.– in the structuring of tastes, to the benefit of the generational variable in particular. The younger generations in particular are suspected of being much less attentive to the norms of cultural legitimacy. This article critically engages the theory of structural homology based on the results of a survey carried out among a population of 1351 young people –for the vast majority of students– aged from 18 to 20 and recruited in different spheres of higher education. Confronting this population to an open question on their cinematographic preferences, the survey makes it possible to interrogate the level of cultural legitimacy of the films they prefer in an original way, based on their labelling as “Art et essai”. The results demonstrate that the inherited cultural capital continues to strongly structure the cultural tastes of the youth.; La théorie de l’homologie structurale entre l’espace social et l’espace des styles de vie est régulièrement remise en question par des travaux soulignant l’atténuation des facteurs dispositionnels – capital culturel, capital économique, origine sociale, etc. – dans la structuration des goûts, au profit de la variable générationnelle notamment. Les jeunes générations en particulier sont suspectées d’être beaucoup moins sensibles et attentives aux normes de la légitimité culturelle. Cet article propose de discuter cette remise en cause de l’homologie structurale en s’appuyant sur les résultats d’une enquête réalisée auprès d’une population de 1351 jeunes – pour la très grande majorité étudiants – âgés de 18 à 20 ans, recrutés dans différentes régions de l’enseignement supérieur (BTS, IUT, AES, IEP, etc.). En interrogeant cette population sur ses préférences cinématographiques à travers une question ouverte, l’enquête permet de questionner de manière originale le niveau de légitimité culturelle des œuvres visionnées, à partir de leur labellisation « Art et essai », et de démontrer que le capital culturel hérité continue de structurer fortement les goûts culturels de cette population juvénile.

Abstract

The MyCOAST project (http://mycoast-project.org/) is an INTERREG Atlantic Area project designed to demonstrate that marine services for tackling coastal risks can be jointly developed. The main innovation and originality of the project stems from the implementation of transferable tools able to improve the risk management systems operated in the Atlantic Area. A successful outcome was achieved by identifying mature existing tools and selecting those that could be further developed by partners during the project duration. Demonstration of the tools in pilot actions showed that they are effective in supporting end users and relocatable among different regions in the Atlantic Area., Le projet MyCOAST (http://mycoast-project.org/) est un projet INTERREG de l'Espace Atlantique destiné à démontrer que les services maritimes pour faire face aux risques côtiers peuvent être développés conjointement. La principale innovation et originalité du projet réside dans la mise en œuvre d'outils transférables capables d'améliorer les systèmes de gestion des risques exploités dans l'Espace Atlantique. L'identification d'outils matures existants et la sélection de ceux qui pourraient être développés par les partenaires pendant la durée du projet ont permis d'atteindre un résultat positif. La démonstration des outils dans des actions pilotes a montré qu'ils sont efficaces pour soutenir les utilisateurs finaux et qu'ils peuvent être transférés dans différentes régions de l'Espace Atlantique.

Abstract

To study the antikinetoplastid 3-nitroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine pharmacophore, a structure-activity relationship study was conducted through the synthesis of 26 original derivatives and their in vitro evaluation on both Leishmania spp and Trypanosoma brucei brucei. This SAR study showed that the antitrypanosomal pharmacophore was less restrictive than the antileishmanial one and highlighted positions 2, 6 and 8 of the imidazopyridine ring as key modulation points. None of the synthesized compounds allowed improvement in antileishmanial activity, compared to previous hit molecules in the series. Nevertheless, compound 8, the best antitrypanosomal molecule in this series (EC50 = 17 nM, SI = 2650 & E° = -0.6 V), was not only more active than all reference drugs and previous hit molecules in the series but also displayed improved aqueous solubility and better in vitro pharmacokinetic characteristics: good microsomal stability (T1/2 > 40 min), moderate albumin binding (77%) and moderate permeability across the blood brain barrier according to a PAMPA assay. Moreover, both micronucleus and comet assays showed that nitroaromatic molecule 8 was not genotoxic in vitro. It was evidenced that bioactivation of molecule 8 was operated by T. b. brucei type 1 nitroreductase, in the same manner as fexinidazole. Finally, a mouse pharmacokinetic study showed that 8 displayed good systemic exposure after both single and repeated oral administrations at 100 mg/kg (NOAEL) and satisfying plasmatic half-life (T1/2 = 7.7 h). Thus, molecule 8 appears as a good candidate for initiating a hit to lead drug discovery program.

Abstract

Purpose To examine the independent and incremental value of CT-derived quantitative burden and attenuation of COVID-19 pneumonia for the prediction of clinical deterioration or death. Methods This was a retrospective analysis of a prospective international registry of consecutive patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and chest CT imaging, admitted to four centers between January 10 and May 6, 2020. Total burden (expressed as a percentage) and mean attenuation of ground glass opacities (GGO) and consolidation were quantified from CT using semi-automated research software. The primary outcome was clinical deterioration (intensive care unit admission, invasive mechanical ventilation, or vasopressor therapy) or in-hospital death. Logistic regression was performed to assess the predictive value of clinical and CT parameters for the primary outcome. Results The final population comprised 120 patients (mean age 64 ± 16 years, 78 men), of whom 39 (32.5%) experienced clinical deterioration or death. In multivariable regression of clinical and CT parameters, consolidation burden (odds ratio [OR], 3.4; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.7, 6.9 per doubling; P = .001) and increasing GGO attenuation (OR, 3.2; 95% CI: 1.3, 8.3 per standard deviation, P = .02) were independent predictors of deterioration or death; as was C-reactive protein (OR, 2.1; 95% CI: 1.3, 3.4 per doubling; P = .004), history of heart failure (OR 1.3; 95% CI: 1.1, 1.6, P = .01), and chronic lung disease (OR, 1.3; 95% CI: 1.0, 1.6; P = .02). Quantitative CT measures added incremental predictive value beyond a model with only clinical parameters (area under the curve, 0.93 vs 0.82, P = .006). The optimal prognostic cutoffs for burden of COVID-19 pneumonia as determined by Youden’s index were consolidation of greater than or equal to 1.8% and GGO of greater than or equal to 13.5%. Conclusions Quantitative burden of consolidation or GGO on chest CT independently predict clinical deterioration or death in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. CT-derived measures have incremental prognostic value over and above clinical parameters, and may be useful for risk stratifying patients with COVID-19.

Abstract

International audience; It seems that social media sites are now the primary source of news for young adults. This new reality has, however, raised a number of concerns, widely aired and debated in the political and media spheres. It is assumed that young people are exposed to unverified or manipulated information or “fake” news, or that they are trapped in “filter bubbles” that isolate them from any opinions that conflict with their own. This article seeks to move away from these assumptions by analyzing these new practices in terms of questions arising from media sociology, using a multi-method field survey (questionnaire, online observation, and interviews) conducted among groups of young people from different social and cultural backgrounds. The findings show that young people from working-class backgrounds are at greater risk of noninformation than misinformation, and that students from elite institutions are exposed to a broader spectrum of content on social media than elsewhere.; Les médias sociaux apparaissent aujourd’hui comme le premier moyen d’information des jeunes. Cette réalité nouvelle soulève un certain nombre d’inquiétudes, largement relayées et débattues dans le champ médiatique : on suppose que les jeunes seraient exposés à une information non vérifiée, manipulée ou « fausse » ou encore qu’ils seraient enfermés dans des « bulles de filtre » qui les isoleraient de tout débat contradictoire… Cet article propose de mettre ces croyances à distance, en analysant ces nouvelles pratiques à l’aune de questionnements hérités de la sociologie des médias et en s’appuyant sur une enquête de terrain multi-méthodes (questionnaire, observation en ligne et entretiens) menée auprès de différents publics juvéniles. Il ressort alors de l’enquête que les jeunes issus de milieux populaires sont moins enclins à la désinformation qu’à la non-information, et que les étudiants issus de formations élitistes sont exposés à une information plus diversifiée sur les réseaux sociaux que sur d’autres médias.

Abstract

International audience; BackgroundBrain MRI parenchymal signal abnormalities have been associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).PurposeTo describe the neuroimaging findings (excluding ischemic infarcts) in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection.Materials and MethodsThis was a retrospective study of patients evaluated from March 23, 2020, to April 27, 2020, at 16 hospitals. Inclusion criteria were (a) positive nasopharyngeal or lower respiratory tract reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assays, (b) severe COVID-19 infection defined as a requirement for hospitalization and oxygen therapy, (c) neurologic manifestations, and (d) abnormal brain MRI findings. Exclusion criteria were patients with missing or noncontributory data regarding brain MRI or brain MRI showing ischemic infarcts, cerebral venous thrombosis, or chronic lesions unrelated to the current event. Categorical data were compared using the Fisher exact test. Quantitative data were compared using the Student t test or Wilcoxon test. P < .05 represented a significant difference.ResultsThirty men (81%) and seven women (19%) met the inclusion criteria, with a mean age of 61 years ± 12 (standard deviation) (age range, 8–78 years). The most common neurologic manifestations were alteration of consciousness (27 of 37, 73%), abnormal wakefulness when sedation was stopped (15 of 37, 41%), confusion (12 of 37, 32%), and agitation (seven of 37, 19%). The most frequent MRI findings were signal abnormalities located in the medial temporal lobe in 16 of 37 patients (43%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 27%, 59%), nonconfluent multifocal white matter hyperintense lesions seen with fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and diffusion-weighted sequences with variable enhancement, with associated hemorrhagic lesions in 11 of 37 patients (30%; 95% CI: 15%, 45%), and extensive and isolated white matter microhemorrhages in nine of 37 patients (24%; 95% CI: 10%, 38%). A majority of patients (20 of 37, 54%) had intracerebral hemorrhagic lesions with a more severe clinical presentation and a higher admission rate in intensive care units (20 of 20 patients [100%] vs 12 of 17 patients without hemorrhage [71%], P = .01) and development of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (20 of 20 patients [100%] vs 11 of 17 patients [65%], P = .005). Only one patient had SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the cerebrospinal fluid.ConclusionPatients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 and without ischemic infarcts had a wide range of neurologic manifestations that were associated with abnormal brain MRI scans. Eight distinctive neuroradiologic patterns were described.

Abstract

Organizational partnerships exist in various forms to create mutual benefits such as a focus on core activities, improved service quality, a reduction in costs, or creating strategic innovations. A general belief among researchers is that information transparency, interdependence, and trustworthiness help improving the performance of partnerships. However, traditionally, more attention is given to formulating contractual agreements, while less consideration is afforded to the relational and operational realm. Despite that partners often put significant efforts into drafting contractual agreements, dissimilarities are acknowledged. Failing factors such as a shortage of clarity and perceived obligations in partnerships are common, and therefore partnerships often do not produce what they are projected to deliver. This research applied academic knowledge with managerial relevance in the development of a prototype. This prototype facilitates to create clarification on mutually perceived obligations and interdependencies and assesses mutually perceived trustworthiness among the partnership through a survey. The results of the workability of the prototype were evaluated through the examination of the design requirements. As with many first attempts, some design requirements were operational, and some need to be further refined. Indeed, the prototype provides a first move towards a systematic method of requesting cooperation objectives and interdependencies, as it aids in identifying the collaboration objectives, interdependencies, and phasing of the collaboration.

COVID-19 has shaken the world. Countless lives have been lost or devastated, and as of November 2020, the pandemic shows little sign of abatement. Emergency responses across the world have led to drastic changes in local and global development trajectories within a very short period of time. Yet precisely how these changes will take shape depends on underlying historical and socio-economic forces that must become part of our understanding of, and plans for, a world beyond COVID-19.

Abstract

Although species delimitation is often controversial, emerging DNA-based and classical morphology-based methods are rarely compared using large-scale samplings, even less in the case of widely distributed species that have distant, allopatric populations. In the current study, we examined species boundaries within two wolf spider species of the genus Pardosa (Araneae, Lycosidae), P. riparia and P. palustris. Wolf spiders constitute an excellent model for testing the relevance of traditional vs. modern methods in species and population delimitation because several closely related species are distributed over cross-continental geographic ranges. Allopatric populations of the two Pardosa species were sampled across Europe to Far East Russia (latitudinal range > 150°) and several dozen individuals were studied using morphological characters (morphometry of three measures for both sexes, plus five in males only and two in females only), DNA barcoding (COI sequencing) and double-digest restriction site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq). The results obtained allow for changing the taxonomic status of two Far East Russian populations to subspecies and ddRADseq proved to be a powerful tool for taxonomic research despite scarce sampling and inherent subjectivity of species delimitation in allopatry. Overall, this study pleads for both multi-criteria and more population-based studies in taxonomy.

Abstract

Humor serves as a protective factor in the resiliency process for many, reducing stress and helping children and adults cope with difficult circumstances. Humor can lighten a situation and relieve tension but can also be misinterpreted in response to serious circumstances. Providing foster care can be a challenging process as families open up their homes to care for children who have experienced maltreatment. Despite challenges, many foster families are able to sustain fostering. The importance of humor was highlighted as a protective factor for foster families in the current study. Understanding the use of humor offers important implications.
