In 2017, the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) Science Advisory Council, together with the international astronomy community, developed a set of five Key Science Goals (KSGs) to inform, prioritize and refine the technical capabilities of a future radio telescope array for high angular resolution operation from 1.2 - 116 GHz with 10 times the sensitivity of the Jansky VLA and ALMA. The resulting KSGs, which require observations at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths that cannot be achieved by any other facility, represent a small subset of the broad range of astrophysical problems that the ngVLA will be able address. This document presents an update to the original ngVLA KSGs, taking account of new results and progress in the 7+ years since their initial presentation, again drawing on the expertise of the ngVLA Science Advisory Council and the broader community in the ngVLA Science Working Groups. As the design of the ngVLA has also matured substantially in this period, this document also briefly addresses initial expectations for ngVLA data products and processing that will be needed to achieve the KSGs. The original ngVLA KSGs endure as outstanding problems of high priority. We report the highest-redshift detection of [O I] 63 $\mu$m from a luminous quasar, J2054-0005, at $z=6.04$ based on the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array Band 9 observations. The [O I] 63 $\mu$m line luminosity is $(4.5\pm1.5) \times 10^{9}~L_{\rm \odot}$, corresponding to the [O I] 63 $\mu$m-to-far-infrared luminosity ratio of $\approx 6.7\times10^{-4}$, which is consistent with the value obtained in the local universe. Remarkably, [O I] 63 $\mu$m is as bright as [C II] 158 $\mu$m, resulting in the [O I]-to-[C II] line luminosity ratio of $1.3\pm0.5$. Based on a careful comparison of the luminosity ratios of [O I] 63 $\mu$m, [C II] 158 $\mu$m, and dust continuum emission to models of photo-dissociation regions, we find that J2054-0005 has a gas density log($n_{\rm H}$/cm$^{-3}$)$=3.7\pm0.3$ and an incident far-ultraviolet radiation field of log($G/G_{\rm 0}$)$= 3.0\pm0.1$, showing that [O I] 63 $\mu$m serves as an important coolant of the dense and warm gas in J2054-0005. A close examination of the [O I] and [C II] line profiles suggests that the [O I] line may be partially self-absorbed, however deeper observations are needed to verify this conclusion. Regardless, the gas density and incident radiation field are in a broad agreement with the values obtained in nearby star-forming galaxies and objects with [O I] 63 $\mu$m observations at $z=1-3$ with the Herschel Space Observatory. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the [C II] 158 $\mu$m line and the underlying continuum emission of TN J0924$-$2201, which is one of the most distant known radio galaxies at $z>5$. The [C II] line and 1-mm continuum emission are detected at the host galaxy. The systemic redshift derived from the [C II] line is $z_{\rm [C II]}=5.1736\pm0.0002$, indicating that the Ly$\alpha$ line is redshifted by a velocity of $1035\pm10$ km s$^{-1}$, marking the largest velocity offset between the [C II] and Ly$\alpha$ lines recorded at $z>5$ to date. In the central region of the host galaxy, we identified a redshifted substructure of [C II] with a velocity of $702\pm17$ km s$^{-1}$, which is close to the CIV line with a velocity of $500\pm10$ km s$^{-1}$. The position and the velocity offsets align with a model of an outflowing shell structure, consistent with the large velocity offset of Ly$\alpha$. The non-detection of [C II] and dust emission from the three CO(1--0)-detected companions indicates their different nature compared to dwarf galaxies based on the photodissociation region model. Given their large velocity of $\sim1500$ km s$^{-1}$, outflowing molecular clouds induced by the AGN is the most plausible interpretation, and they may exceed the escape velocity of a $10^{13}\,M_{\odot}$ halo. These results suggest that TN J0924$-$2201, with the ongoing and fossil large-scale outflows, is in a distinctive phase of removing molecular gas from a central massive galaxy in an overdense region in the early universe. We present ALMA [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations ($0''.57 \times 0''.46$ resolution) toward a quasar-quasar pair system recently discovered at $z = 6.05$ (Matsuoka et al. 2024). The quasar nuclei (C1 and C2) are faint ($M_{\rm 1450} \gtrsim -23$ mag), but we detect very bright [CII] emission bridging the 12 kpc between the two objects and extending beyond them (total luminosity $L_{\rm [CII]} \simeq 6 \times 10^9~L_\odot$). The [CII]-based total star formation rate of the system is $\sim 550~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ (IR-based dust-obscured SFR is $\sim 100~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$), with a [CII]-based total gas mass of $\sim 10^{11}~M_\odot$. The dynamical masses of the two galaxies are large ($\sim 9 \times 10^{10}~M_\odot$ for C1 and $\sim 5 \times 10^{10}~M_\odot$ for C2). There is a smooth velocity gradient in [CII], indicating that these quasars are a tidally interacting system. We identified a dynamically distinct, fast [CII] component around C1: detailed inspection of the line spectrum there reveals the presence of a broad wing component, which we interpret as the indication of fast outflows with a velocity of $\sim 600$ km s$^{-1}$. The expected mass loading factor of the outflows, after accounting for multiphase gas, is $\gtrsim 2-3$, which is intermediate between AGN-driven and starburst-driven outflows. Hydrodynamic simulations in the literature predicted that this pair will evolve to a luminous ($M_{\rm 1450} \lesssim -26$ mag), starbursting ($\gtrsim 1000~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) quasar after coalescence, one of the most extreme populations in the early universe., Comment: 16 pages incl. We report the discovery of two quasars at a redshift of $z$ = 6.05, in the process of merging. They were serendipitously discovered from the deep multi-band imaging data collected by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. The quasars, HSC $J$121503.42$-$014858.7 (C1) and HSC $J$121503.55$-$014859.3 (C2), both have luminous ($>$10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) Ly$\alpha$ emission with a clear broad component (full width at half maximum $>$1000 km s$^{-1}$). The rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) absolute magnitudes are $M_{1450} = -23.106 \pm 0.017$ (C1) and $-22.662 \pm 0.024$ (C2). Our crude estimates of the black hole masses provide $\log (M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 8.1 \pm 0.3$ in both sources. The two quasars are separated by 12 kpc in projected proper distance, bridged by a structure in the rest-UV light suggesting that they are undergoing a merger. This pair is one of the most distant merging quasars reported to date, providing crucial insight into galaxy and black hole build-up in the hierarchical structure formation scenario. We report the identification of a quasar overdensity in the BOSSJ0210 field, dubbed Cosmic Himalayas, consisting of 11 quasars at $z=2.16-2.20$, the densest overdensity of quasars ($17\sigma$) in the $\sim$10,000 deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We present the spatial distributions of galaxies and quasars and an HI absorption map of the intergalactic medium (IGM). On the map of 465 galaxies selected from the MAMMOTH-Subaru survey, we find two galaxy density peaks that do not fall on the quasar overdensity but instead exist at the northwest and southeast sides, approximately 25 $h^{-1}$ comoving-Mpc apart from the quasar overdensity. With a spatial resolution of 15 $h^{-1}$ comoving Mpc in projection, we produce a three-dimensional HI tomography map by the IGM Ly$\alpha$ forest in the spectra of 23 SDSS/eBOSS quasars behind the quasar overdensity. Surprisingly, the quasar overdensity coincides with neither an absorption peak nor a transmission peak of IGM HI but lies near the border separating opaque and transparent volumes, with the more luminous quasars located in an environment with lesser IGM HI. Hence remarkably, the overdensity region traced by the 11 quasars, albeit all in coherently active states, has no clear coincidence with peaks of galaxies or HI absorption densities. Current physical scenarios with mixtures of HI overdensities and quasar photoionization cannot fully interpret the emergence of Cosmic Himalayas, suggesting this peculiar structure is an excellent laboratory to unveil the interplay between galaxies, quasars, and the IGM., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ, comments are welcome

Recent submillimeter observations have revealed signs of pc-scale molecular inflow and atomic outflow in the nearest Seyfert 2 galaxy, the Circinus galaxy. To verify the gas kinematics suggested by these observations, we performed molecular and atomic line transfer calculations based on a physics-based 3D radiation-hydrodynamic model, which has been compared with multi-wavelength observations in this paper series. The major axis position-velocity diagram (PVD) of CO(3-2) reproduces the observed faint emission at the systemic velocity, and our calculations confirm that this component originates from failed winds falling back to the disk plane. The minor-axis PVD of [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$), when created using only the gas with positive radial velocities, presents a sign of blue- and redshifted offset peaks similar to those in the observation, suggesting that the observed peaks indeed originate from the outflow, but that the model may lack outflows as strong as those in the Circinus galaxy. Similar to the observed HCN(3-2), the similar dense gas tracer HCO$^+$(3-2) can exhibit nuclear spectra with inverse P-Cygni profiles with $\sim$0.5 pc beams, but the line shape is azimuthally dependent. The corresponding continuum absorbers are inflowing clumps at 5-10 pc from the center. To detect significant absorption with a high probability, the inclination must be fairly edge-on ($\gtrsim$85$^\circ$), and the beam size must be small ($\lesssim$1 pc). The physical quantity that directly controls the feedback of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in elliptical galaxies remains to be determined. The discovery of molecular gas around the AGNs suggests that the gas is fueling the AGNs. Therefore, we analyze Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) data for the CO line (J=1-0, 2-1, 3-2) emission and estimate the mass of molecular gas within 500 pc of the center of 12 non-central elliptical galaxies (NCEGs) and 10 of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). We find that the mass (M_mol ~ 10^5-10^9 M_sun) is correlated with the jet power of their AGNs, which is represented by P_cav ~ 4.1x10^42 (M_mol/10^7 M_sun)^{1.3} erg s^{-1}, although NCEGs alone do not show the correlation. We also find that M_mol is correlated with the AGN continuum luminosities at ~ 1.4 GHz (L_1.4) and ~ 100-300 GHz (L_con). Since P_cav reflects galactic-scale, long-term AGN activity, while the continuum luminosities reflect local (~< 500 pc), short-term AGN activity, our results suggest that AGN activity depends on the amount of gas, regardless of its time scale. On the other hand, we cannot find a clear correlation between the mass of the black holes in the AGNs (M_BH) and P_cav. This suggests that M_mol, rather than M_BH, is the main factor controlling AGN activity. We present a catalog of the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) continuum properties of 98 nearby ($z <$ 0.05) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from the 70-month Swift/BAT hard X-ray catalog that have precisely determined X-ray spectral properties and subarcsec-resolution ALMA Band-6 (211--275 GHz) observations as of 2021 April. Due to the hard-X-ray ($>$ 10 keV) selection, the sample is nearly unbiased for obscured systems at least up to Compton-thick-level obscuration, and provides the largest number of AGNs with high physical resolution mm-wave data ($\lesssim$ 100--200 pc). Our catalog reports emission peak coordinates, spectral indices, and peak fluxes and luminosities at 1.3 mm (230 GHz). Additionally, high-resolution mm-wave images are provided. Using the images and creating radial surface brightness profiles of mm-wave emission, we identify emission extending from the central source and isolated blob-like emission. Flags indicating the presence of these emission features are tabulated. Among 90 AGNs with significant detections of nuclear emission, 37 AGNs ($\approx$ 41%) appear to have both or one of extended or blob-like components. We, in particular, investigate AGNs that show well-resolved mm-wave components and find that these seem to have a variety of origins (i.e., a jet, radio lobes, a secondary AGN, stellar clusters, a narrow line region, galaxy disk, active star-formation regions, and AGN-driven outflows), and some components have currently unclear origins., Comment: 49 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

We present the results of our ALMA $\lesssim$0.5 kpc-resolution dense molecular line (HCN and HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1, J=3-2, and J=4-3) observations of 12 nearby (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs). After matching beam sizes of all molecular line data to the same values in all (U)LIRGs, we derive molecular line flux ratios, by extracting spectra in the central 0.5, 1, 2 kpc circular regions, and 0.5-1 and 1-2 kpc annular regions. Based on non-LTE model calculations, we quantitatively confirm that the innermost ($\lesssim$0.5 kpc) molecular gas is very dense ($\gtrsim$10$^{5}$ cm$^{-3}$) and warm ($\gtrsim$300 K) in ULIRGs, and that in one LIRG is also modestly dense (10$^{4-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) and warm ($\sim$100 K). We then investigate the spatial variation of the HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ flux ratios and high-J to low-J flux ratios of HCN and HCO$^{+}$. A subtle sign of decreasing trend of these ratios from the innermost ($\lesssim$0.5 kpc) to outer nuclear (0.5-2 kpc) region is discernible in a significant fraction of the observed ULIRGs. For two AGN-hosting ULIRGs which display the trend most clearly, we find based on a Bayesian approach that the HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ abundance ratio and gas kinetic temperature systematically increase from the outer nuclear to the innermost region. We suggest that this trend comes from potential AGN effects, because no such spatial variation is found in a starburst-dominated LIRG., Comment: 62 pages, 29 figures. ApJ accepted. We present an imaging molecular line survey in the 3-mm band (85-114 GHz) focused on one of the nearest galaxies with an active galactic nucleus (AGN), NGC 1068, based on observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Distributions of 23 molecular transitions are obtained in the central ~3 kpc region, including both the circumnuclear disk (CND) and starburst ring (SBR) with 60 and 350 pc resolution. The column densities and relative abundances of all the detected molecules are estimated under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium in the CND and SBR. Then, we discuss the physical and chemical effects of the AGN on molecular abundance corresponding to the observation scale. We found that H13CN, SiO, HCN, and H13CO+ are abundant in the CND relative to the SBR. In contrast, 13CO is more abundant in the SBR. Based on the calculated column density ratios of N(HCN)/N(HCO+), N(HCN)/N(CN), and other molecular distributions, we conclude that the enhancement of HCN in the CND may be due to high-temperature environments resulting from strong shocks, which are traced by the SiO emission. Moreover, the abundance of CN in the CND is significantly lower than the expected value of the model calculations in the region affected by strong radiation. The evolution of the quasar luminosity function (QLF) is fundamental to understanding the cosmic evolution of black holes (BHs) through their accretion phases. In the era of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Euclid, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, their unprecedented detection sensitivity and wide survey area can unveil the low-luminosity quasar and low-mass BH population, and provide new insights into quasar host galaxies. We present a theoretical model describing BH growth from initial seeding at $z>20$ to $z\sim 4$,incorporating the duration of accretion episodes, the distribution of Eddington ratios, and the mass dependency of BH accretion rates. By constraining the model parameters with the observed QLFs at $4\leq z\leq6$ across a wide UV luminosity range ($-2910^8~M_\odot$, leading to mass saturation at $M_\bullet\gtrsim 10^{10}~M_\odot$. We predict the BH mass function down to $M_{\bullet}\sim 10^6~M_\odot$ for both unobscured and obscured quasar populations at $4\leq z \leq 11$, offering a benchmark for future observational tests. Our model accounts for the presence of both bright and faint quasars at $z>4$, including those discovered by JWST. Furthermore, our findings suggest two distinct pathways for the early assembly of the BH-galaxy mass correlation: the population with a BH-to-stellar mass ratio near the local value of $M_\bullet/M_{\star}\simeq5\times10^{-3}$ maintains a proximity to the relation through its evolution via moderate growth, while the population that begins to grow above the local relation accretes mass rapidly and becomes as overmassive as $M_\bullet/M_\star \sim 0.01-0.1$ by $z\sim 6$., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures; Accepted by ApJ

We present the quasar luminosity function (LF) at $z = 7$, measured with 35 spectroscopically confirmed quasars at $6.55 < z < 7.15$. The sample of 22 quasars from the Subaru High-$z$ Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, combined with 13 brighter quasars in the literature, covers an unprecedentedly wide range of rest-frame ultraviolet magnitudes over $-28 < M_{1450} < -23$. We found that the binned LF flattens significantly toward the faint end populated by the SHELLQs quasars. A maximum likelihood fit to a double power-law model has a break magnitude $M^*_{1450} = -25.60^{+0.40}_{-0.30}$, a characteristic density $\Phi^* = 1.35^{+0.47}_{-0.30}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ mag$^{-1}$, and a bright-end slope $\beta = -3.34^{+0.49}_{-0.57}$, when the faint-end slope is fixed to $\alpha = -1.2$ as observed at $z \le 6$. The overall LF shape remains remarkably similar from $z = 4$ to $7$, while the amplitude decreases substantially toward higher redshifts, with a clear indication of an accelerating decline at $z \ge 6$. The estimated ionizing photon density, $10^{48.2 \pm 0.1}$ s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$, is less than 1 % of the critical rate to keep the intergalactic medium ionized at $z = 7$, and thus indicates that quasars are not a major contributor to cosmic reionization., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal Letters, in press

Active galaxies contain a supermassive black hole at their center, which grows by accreting matter from the surrounding galaxy. The accretion process in the central ~10 parsecs has not been directly resolved in previous observations, due to the small apparent angular sizes involved. We observed the active nucleus of the Circinus Galaxy using sub-millimeter interferometry. A dense inflow of molecular gas is evident on sub-parsec scales. We calculate that less than 3% of this inflow is accreted by the black hole, with the rest being ejected by multiphase outflows, providing feedback to the host galaxy. Massive molecular clouds have been discovered in massive elliptical galaxies at the center of galaxy clusters. Some of this cold gas is expected to flow in the central supermassive black holes and activate galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. In this study, we analyze archival ALMA data of 9 massive elliptical galaxies, focusing on CO line emissions, to explore the circumnuclear gas. We show that the mass of the molecular gas within a fixed radius (500 pc) from the AGNs (M_mol ~ 10^7-10^8 M_sun) is correlated with the jet power estimated from X-ray cavities (P_cav ~ 10^42-10^45 erg/s). The mass accretion rate of the circumnuclear gas \dot{M} also has a correlation with P_cav. On the other hand, the continuum luminosities at ~1.4 GHz and ~100-300 GHz have no correlation with M_mol. These results indicate that the circumnuclear gas is sustaining the long-term AGN activities (~10^7 yr) rather than the current ones. The circumnuclear gas mass is a better indicator of the jet power than the continuum luminosity, which probably changes on a shorter time scale. We also study the origin of the continuum emission from the AGNs at ~100-300 GHz and find that it is mostly synchrotron radiation. We report the results of ALMA 1-2 kpc-resolution, three rotational transition line (J=2-1, J=3-2, and J=4-3) observations of multiple dense molecular gas tracers (HCN, HCO$^{+}$, and HNC) for ten nearby (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs). Following the matching of beam sizes to 1-2 kpc for each (U)LIRG, the high-J to low-J transition-line flux ratios of each molecule and the emission line flux ratios of different molecules at each J transition are derived. We conduct RADEX non-LTE model calculations and find that, under a wide range of gas density and kinetic temperature, the observed HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ flux ratios in the overall (U)LIRGs are naturally reproduced with enhanced HCN abundance compared to HCO$^{+}$. Thereafter, molecular gas properties are constrained primarily through the use of HCN and HCO$^{+}$ data and the adoption of fiducial values for the HCO$^{+}$ column density and HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ abundance ratio. We quantitatively confirm the following: (1) Molecular gas at the (U)LIRGs' nuclei is dense ($\gtrsim$10$^{3-4}$ cm$^{-3}$) and warm ($\gtrsim$100 K). (2) Molecular gas density and temperature in nine ULIRGs' nuclei are significantly higher than that of one LIRG's nucleus. (3) Molecular gas in starburst-dominated sources tends to be less dense and cooler than ULIRGs with luminous AGN signatures. For six selected sources, we also apply a Bayesian approach by freeing all parameters and support the above main results. Our ALMA 1-2 kpc resolution, multiple transition-line data of multiple molecules are a very powerful tool for scrutinizing the properties of molecular gas concentrated around luminous energy sources in nearby (U)LIRGs' nuclei., Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures. We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) K-band (19 GHz) observations of the redshifted CO(1-0) line emission toward the radio galaxy TN J0924$-$2201 at $z=5.2$, which is one of the most distant CO-detected radio galaxies. With the angular resolution of $\sim2''$, the CO(1-0) line emission is resolved into three clumps, within $\pm500$ km\,s$^{-1}$ relative to its redshift, where is determined by Ly$\alpha$. We find that they locate off-center and 12-33 kpc away from the center of the host galaxy, which has counterparts in $HST$ $i$-band, $Spitzer$/IRAC and ALMA Band-6 (230 GHz; 1.3 mm). With the ALMA detection, we estimate $L_{\rm IR}$ and SFR of the host galaxy to be $(9.3\pm1.7)\times10^{11} L_{\odot}$ and $110\pm20$ $M_{\odot}\,\rm yr^{-1}$, respectively. We also derive the $3\sigma$ upper limit of $M_{\rm H_{2}}<1.3\times10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$ at the host galaxy. The detected CO(1-0) line luminosities of three clumps, $L'_{\rm CO(1-0)}$ = (3.2-4.7)$\times10^{10}$ $\rm\,K\,km\,s^{-1}pc^{2}$, indicate the presence of three massive molecular gas reservoirs with $M_{\rm H_{2}}$ = (2.5-3.7)$\times10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$, by assuming the CO-to-H$_{2}$ conversion factor $\alpha_{\rm CO} = 0.8$ $M_{\rm \odot}\rm\,(K\,km\,s^{-1}pc^{2})^{-1}$, although the star formation rate (SFR) is not elevated because of the non-detection of ALMA 1.3 mm continuum (SFR $<$ 40 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$). From the host galaxy, the nearest molecular gas clump labeled as clump A, is apparently aligning with the radio jet axis, showing the radio-CO alignment. The possible origin of these three clumps around TN J0924$-$2201 can be interpreted as merger, jet-induced metal enrichment and outflow., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. The detection of starlight from the host galaxies of quasars during the reionization epoch ($z>6$) has been elusive, even with deep HST observations. The current highest redshift quasar host detected, at $z=4.5$, required the magnifying effect of a foreground lensing galaxy. Low-luminosity quasars from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) mitigate the challenge of detecting their underlying, previously-undetected host galaxies. Here we report rest-frame optical images and spectroscopy of two HSC-SSP quasars at $z>6$ with JWST. Using NIRCam imaging at 3.6$\mu$m and 1.5$\mu$m and subtracting the light from the unresolved quasars, we find that the host galaxies are massive (stellar masses of $13\times$ and $3.4\times$ $10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$, respectively), compact, and disk-like. NIRSpec medium-resolution spectroscopy shows stellar absorption lines in the more massive quasar, confirming the detection of the host. Velocity-broadened gas in the vicinity of these quasars enables measurements of their black hole masses ($1.4\times 10^9$ and $2.0\times$ $10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$, respectively). H1821+643 is the most X-ray luminous non-beamed AGN of $L_\mathrm{14-150 keV}= 5.2\times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the Swift/BAT ultra-hard X-ray survey and it is also a hyper-luminous infrared (IR) galaxy $L_\mathrm{IR} = 10^{13.2} L_\odot$ residing in the center of a massive galaxy cluster, which is a unique environment achieving the rapid mass assembly of black holes (BH) and host galaxies in the local universe. We decompose the X-ray to IR spectral energy distribution (SED) into the AGN and starburst component using the SED fitting tool CIGALE-2022.0 and show that H1821+643 consumes a large amount of cold gas ($\dot{M}_\mathrm{con}$) with star-formation rate of $\log ( \mathrm{SFR}/M_{\odot}~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}) = 3.01 \pm 0.04$ and BH accretion rate of $\log (\dot{M}_\mathrm{BH}/M_{\odot}~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}) = 1.20 \pm 0.05$. This high $\dot{M}_\mathrm{con}$ is larger than the cooling rate ($\dot{M}_\mathrm{cool}$) of the intra-cluster medium (ICM), $\dot{M}_\mathrm{con}/\dot{M}_\mathrm{cool} \gtrsim 1$, which is one to two order magnitude higher than the typical value of other systems, indicating that H1821 provides the unique and extreme environment of rapid gas consumption. We also show that H1821+643 has an efficient cooling path achieving from $10^7$ K to $10^2$ K thanks to [OIII] 63 $\mu \mathrm{m}$, which is a main coolant in low temperature range ($10^4$ K to $10^2$ K) with a cooling rate of $\dot{M}_{\mathrm{cool}}=3.2\times 10^5\ M_{\odot}\mathrm{~yr^{-1}}$, and the star-forming region extends over 40 kpc scale., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

To understand the origin of nuclear ($\lesssim$ 100 pc) millimeter-wave (mm-wave) continuum emission in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we systematically analyzed sub-arcsec resolution Band-6 (211-275 GHz) ALMA data of 98 nearby AGNs ($z <$ 0.05) from the 70-month Swift/BAT catalog. The sample, almost unbiased for obscured systems, provides the largest number of AGNs to date with high mm-wave spatial resolution sampling ($\sim$ 1-200 pc), and spans broad ranges of 14-150 keV luminosity {$40 < \log[L_{\rm 14-150}/({\rm erg\,s^{-1}})] < 45$}, black hole mass [$5 < \log(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) < 10$], and Eddington ratio ($-4 < \log \lambda_{\rm Edd} < 2$). We find a significant correlation between 1.3 mm (230 GHz) and 14-150 keV luminosities. Its scatter is $\approx$ 0.36 dex, and the mm-wave emission may serve as a good proxy of the AGN luminosity, free of dust extinction up to $N_{\rm H} \sim 10^{26}$ cm$^{-2}$. While the mm-wave emission could be self-absorbed synchrotron radiation around the X-ray corona according to past works, we also discuss different possible origins of the mm-wave emission; AGN-related dust emission, outflow-driven shocks, and a small-scale ($<$ 200 pc) jet. The dust emission is unlikely to be dominant, as the mm-wave slope is generally flatter than expected. Also, due to no increase in the mm-wave luminosity with the Eddington ratio, a radiation-driven outflow model is possibly not the common mechanism. Recent developments in (sub-)millimeter facilities have drastically changed the amount of information obtained from extragalactic spectral scans. In this paper, we present a feature extraction technique using principal component analysis (PCA) applied to arcsecond-resolution (1.0-2.0 arcsec = 72-144 pc) spectral scan datasets for the nearby type-2 Seyfert galaxy, NGC 1068, using Band 3 of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We apply PCA to 16 well-detected molecular line intensity maps convolved to a common 150 pc resolution. In addition, we include the [SIII]/[SII] line ratio and [CI] $^3P_1$-$^3P_0$ maps in the literature, both of whose distributions show remarkable resemblance with that of a kpc-scale biconical outflow from the central AGN. We identify two prominent features: (1) central concentration at the circumnuclear disk (CND) and (2) two peaks across the center that coincide with the biconical outflow peaks. The concentrated molecular lines in the CND are mostly high-dipole molecules (e.g., H$^{13}$CN, HC$_3$N, and HCN). Line emissions from molecules known to be enhanced in irradiated interstellar medium, CN, C$_2$H, and HNC, show similar concentrations and extended components along the bicone, suggesting that molecule dissociation is a dominant chemical effect of the cold molecular outflow of this galaxy. Although further investigation should be made, this scenario is consistent with the faintness or absence of the emission lines from CO isotopologues, CH$_3$OH, and N$_2$H$^+$, in the outflow, which are easily destroyed by dissociating photons and electrons., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) results obtained from spatially resolved CO $J$=2-1 line ($0.4''$ resolution) and 870 $\mu$m continuum ($0.2''$ resolution) observations of cluster galaxies in XMMXCS J2215.9-1738 at $z=1.46$. Our sample comprises 17 galaxies within $\sim0.5$ Mpc ($0.6R_{200}$) of the cluster center, all of which have previously been detected in the CO $J$=2-1 line at a lower resolution. The effective radii of both the CO $J$=2-1 line and 870 $\mu$m dust continuum emissions are robustly measured for nine galaxies by modeling the visibilities. We find that the CO $J$=2-1 line emission in all of the nine galaxies is more extended than the dust continuum emission by a factor of $2.8\pm1.4$. We investigate the spatially resolved Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation in two regions within the interstellar medium of the galaxies. The relation for our sample reveals that the central region ($0

The correlation between the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs; $\mathcal{M}_{\rm BH}$) and their host galaxies ($\mathcal{M}_\star$) in the reionization epoch provides valuable constraints on their early growth. High-redshift quasars typically have a $\mathcal{M}_{\rm BH}$/$\mathcal{M}_\star$ ratio significantly elevated in comparison to the local value. However, the degree to which this apparent offset is driven by observational biases is unclear for the most distant quasars. To address this issue, we model the sample selection and measurement biases for a compilation of 20 quasars at $z\sim6$ with host properties based on ALMA observations. We find that the observed distribution of quasars in the $\mathcal{M}_{\rm BH} - \mathcal{M}_\star$ plane can be reproduced by assuming that the underlying SMBH population at $z\sim6$ follows the relationship in the local universe. However, a positive or even a negative evolution in $\mathcal{M}_{\rm BH}$/$\mathcal{M}_\star$ can also explain the data, depending on whether the intrinsic scatter evolves and the strength of various systematic uncertainties. To break these degeneracies, an improvement in the accuracy of mass measurements and an expansion of the current sample to lower $\mathcal{M}_{\rm BH}$ limits are needed. Furthermore, assuming a radiative efficiency of 0.1 and quasar duty cycles estimated from the active SMBH fraction, significant outliers in $\mathcal{M}_{\rm BH}$/$\mathcal{M}_\star$ tend to move toward the local relation given their instantaneous BH growth rate and star formation rate. This may provide evidence for a self-regulated SMBH-galaxy coevolution scenario that is in place at $z\sim6$, with AGN feedback being a possible driver., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, published in ApJL

Active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback is postulated as a key mechanism for regulating star formation within galaxies. Studying the physical properties of the outflowing gas from AGN is thus crucial for understanding the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. Here we report 55 pc resolution ALMA neutral atomic carbon [CI] $^3P_1\text{-}^3P_0$ observations toward the central 1 kpc of the nearby type-2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, supplemented by 55 pc resolution CO($J=1\text{-}0$) observations. We find that [CI] emission within the central kpc is strongly enhanced by a factor of $>$5 compared to the typical [CI]/CO intensity ratio of $\sim$0.2 for nearby starburst galaxies (in units of brightness temperature). The most [CI]-enhanced gas (ratio $>$ 1) exhibits a kpc-scale elongated structure centered at the AGN that matches the known biconical ionized gas outflow entraining molecular gas in the disk. A truncated, decelerating bicone model explains well the kinematics of the elongated structure, indicating that the [CI] enhancement is predominantly driven by the interaction between the ISM in the disk and the highly inclined ionized gas outflow (which is likely driven by the radio jet). Our results strongly favor the "CO dissociation scenario" rather than the "in-situ C formation" one which prefers a perfect bicone geometry. We suggest that the high [CI]/CO intensity ratio gas in NGC 1068 directly traces ISM in the disk that is currently dissociated and entrained by the jet and the outflow, i.e., the "negative" effect of the AGN feedback., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

The ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 17208$-$0014 is a late-stage merger that hosts a buried active galactic nucleus (AGN). To investigate its nuclear structure, we performed high spatial resolution ($\sim0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}04\sim32\,\mathrm{pc}$) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations in Band 9 ($\sim$450\,\micron\ or $\sim$660\,GHz), along with near-infrared AKARI spectroscopy in 2.5--5.0\,\micron. The Band 9 dust continuum peaks at the AGN location, and toward this position CO($J$=6--5) and CS($J$=14--13) are detected in absorption. Comparison with non-local thermal equilibrium calculations indicates that, within the central beam ($r\sim20\,\mathrm{pc}$), there exists a concentrated component that is dense ($10^7\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$) and warm ($>$200\,K) and has a large column density ($N_\mathrm{H_2}>10^{23}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$). The AKARI spectrum shows deep and broad CO ro-vibrational absorption at 4.67\,\micron. Its band profile is well reproduced with a similarly dense and large column but hotter ($\sim$1000\,K) gas. The region observed through absorption in the near-infrared is highly likely in the nuclear direction, as in the sub-millimeter, but with a narrower beam including a region closer to the nucleus. The central component is considered to possess a hot structure where vibrationally excited HCN emission originates. The most plausible heating source for the gas is X-rays from the AGN. The AKARI spectrum does not show other AGN signs in 2.5--4\,\micron, but this absence may be usual for AGNs buried in a hot mid-infrared core. We present the spectroscopic discovery of 69 quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0, drawn from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) imaging survey data. This is the 16th publication from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, and completes identification of all but the faintest candidates (i.e., i-band dropouts with zAB < 24 and y-band detections, and z-band dropouts with yAB < 24) with Bayesian quasar probability Pq > 0.1 in the HSC-SSP third public data release (PDR3). The sample reported here also includes three quasars with Pq < 0.1 at z ~ 6.6, which we selected in an effort to completely cover the reddest point sources with simple color cuts. The number of high-z quasars discovered in SHELLQs has now grown to 162, including 23 type-II quasar candidates. This paper also presents identification of seven galaxies at 5.6 < z < 6.7, an [O III] emitter at z = 0.954, and 31 Galactic cool stars and brown dwarfs. High-z quasars and galaxies comprise 75 % and 16 % respectively of all the spectroscopic SHELLQs objects that pass our latest selection algorithm with the PDR3 photometry. That is, a total of 91 % of the objects lie at z > 5.6. This demonstrates that the algorithm has very high efficiency, even though we are probing an unprecedentedly low-luminosity population down to M1450 ~ -21 mag., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We present the results of ALMA $\sim$2 mm, $\lesssim$1$''$-resolution observations of ten (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs; infrared luminosity $\gtrsim$ 10$^{11.7}$L$_{\odot}$) at $z <$ 0.15, targeting dense ($>$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$) molecular (HCN, HCO$^{+}$, and HNC J=2-1) and 183 GHz H$_{2}$O 3$_{1,3}$-2$_{2,0}$ emission lines. Higher HCN to HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1 flux ratios are observed in some, but not all, AGN-important ULIRGs than in starburst-classified sources. We detect 183 GHz H$_{2}$O emission in almost all AGN-important ULIRGs, and elevated H$_{2}$O emission is found in two sources with elevated HCN J=2-1 emission, relative to HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1. Except one ULIRG (the Superantennae), the H$_{2}$O emission largely comes from the entire nuclear regions ($\sim$1 kpc), rather than AGN-origin megamaser at the very center ($<<$1 kpc). Nuclear ($\sim$1 kpc) dense molecular gas mass derived from HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1 luminosity is $\gtrsim$a few $\times$ 10$^{8}$M$_{\odot}$, and its depletion time is estimated to be $\gtrsim$10$^{6}$ yr in all sources. Vibrationally excited J=2-1 emission lines of HCN and HNC are detected in a few (U)LIRGs, but those of HCO$^{+}$ are not. It is suggested that in mid-infrared-radiation-exposed innermost regions around energy sources, HCO$^{+}$ and HNC are substantially less abundant than HCN. In our ALMA $\sim$2 mm data of ten (U)LIRGs, two continuum sources are serendipitously detected within $\sim$10$''$, which are likely to be an infrared luminous dusty galaxy at $z >$ 1 and a blazar., Comment: 50 pages, 16 Figures. As part of the Measuring Black Holes in Below Milky Way-mass (M$^\star$) galaxies (MBHBM$^\star$) Project, we present a dynamical measurement of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass in the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3593, using cold molecular gas $^{12}$CO(2-1) emission observed at an angular resolution of $\approx0''.3$ ($\approx10$ pc) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Our ALMA observations reveal a circumnuclear molecular gas disc (CND) elongated along the galaxy major axis and rotating around the SMBH. Using dynamical modelling, the molecular gas kinematics allow us to infer a SMBH mass $M_{\rm BH}=2.40_{-1.05}^{+1.87}\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ (only statistical uncertainties at the $3\sigma$ level). We also detect a massive core of cold molecular gas (CMC) of mass $M_{\rm CMC}=(5.4\pm1.2)\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ and effective (half-mass) radius $r_{\rm CMC,e}=11.2\pm2.8$ pc, co-spatial with a nuclear star cluster (NSC) of mass $M_{\rm NSC}=(1.67\pm0.48)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$ and effective radius $r_{\rm NSC,e}=5.0\pm1.0$~pc (or $0''.15\pm0''.03$). The mass profiles of the CMC and NSC are well described by S\'{e}rsic functions with indices $1-1.4$. Our $M_{\rm BH}$ and $M_{\rm NSC}$ estimates for NGC 3593 agree well with the recently compiled $M_{\rm BH}$-$M_{\rm NSC}$ scaling relation. Although the $M_{\rm NSC}$ uncertainty is twice the inferred $M_{\rm BH}$, the rapid central rise of the rotation velocities of the CND (as the radius decreases) clearly suggests a SMBH. Indeed, our dynamical models show that even if $M_{\rm NSC}$ is at the upper end of its allowed range, the evidence for a black hole does not vanish, but remains with a lower limit of $M_{\rm BH}>3\times10^5$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 27 pages, 18 Figures, 8 Tables. To investigate the role of active galactic nucleus (AGN) X-ray irradiation on the interstellar medium (ISM), we systematically analyzed Chandra and ALMA CO($J$=2-1) data for 26 ultra-hard X-ray ($>$ 10 keV) selected AGNs at redshifts below 0.05. While Chandra unveils the distribution of X-ray-irradiated gas via Fe-K$\alpha$ emission, the CO($J$=2-1) observations reveal that of cold molecular gas. At high resolutions $\lesssim$ 1 arcsec, we derive Fe-K$\alpha$ and CO($J$=2-1) maps for the nuclear 2 arcsec region, and for the external annular region of 2 arcsec-4 arcsec, where 2 arcsec is $\sim$ 100-600 pc for most of our AGNs. First, focusing on the external regions, we find the Fe-K$\alpha$ emission for six AGNs above 2$\sigma$. Their large equivalent widths ($\gtrsim$ 1 keV) suggest a fluorescent process as their origin. Moreover, by comparing 6-7 keV/3-6 keV ratio, as a proxy of Fe-K$\alpha$, and CO($J$=2-1) images for three AGNs with the highest significant Fe-K$\alpha$ detections, we find a possible spatial separation. These suggest the presence of X-ray-irradiated ISM and the change in the ISM properties. Next, examining the nuclear regions, we find that (1) The 20-50 keV luminosity increases with the CO($J$=2-1) luminosity. (2) The ratio of CO($J$=2-1)-to-HCN($J$=1-0) luminosities increases with 20-50 keV luminosity, suggesting a decrease in the dense gas fraction with X-ray luminosity. (3) The Fe-K$\alpha$-to-X-ray continuum luminosity ratio decreases with the molecular gas mass. This may be explained by a negative AGN feedback scenario: the mass accretion rate increases with gas mass, and simultaneously, the AGN evaporates a portion of the gas, which possibly affects star formation., Comment: 50 pages (27 pages for the main body), 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

We present the results of surveying [CI] $^3P_1-^3P_0$, $^{12}$CO $J=4-3$, and 630 $\mu$m dust continuum emission for 36 nearby ultra/luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) using the Band 8 receiver mounted on the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We describe the survey, observations, data reduction, and results; the main results are as follows. (i) We confirmed that [CI] $^3P_1-^3P_0$ has a linear relationship with both the $^{12}$CO $J=4-3$and 630 $\mu$m continuum. (ii) In NGC 6052 and NGC 7679, $^{12}$CO $J=4-3$ was detected but [CI] $^3P_1-^3P_0$ was not detected with a [CI] $^3P_1-^3P_0$/ $^{12}$CO $J=4-3$ ratio of $\lesssim0.08$. Two possible scenarios of weak [CI] $^3P_1-^3P_0$ emission are C$^0$-poor/CO-rich environments or an environment with an extremely large [CI] $^3P_1-^3P_0$ missing flux. (iii) There is no clear evidence showing that galaxy mergers, AGNs, and dust temperatures control the ratios of [CI] $^3P_1-^3P_0$/ $^{12}$CO $J=4-3$ and $L'_{\rm [CI](1-0)}/L_{\rm 630\mu m}$. (iv) We compare our nearby U/LIRGs with high-z galaxies, such as galaxies on the star formation main sequence (MS) at z$\sim1$ and submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z=2-4$. We found that the mean value for the [CII] $^3P_1$--$^3P_0$/ $^{12}$CO $J=4-3$ ratio of U/LIRGs is similar to that of SMGs but smaller than that of galaxies on the MS., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, and 42 pages for the appendix, accepted for publication in ApJS

We present deep Keck/MOSFIRE near-infrared spectroscopy of a strong Lyman alpha emitting source at z=6.1292, HSC J142331.71-001809.1, which was discovered by the SHELLQS program from imaging data of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. This source is one of five objects that show unresolved (<230 km s-1) and prominent (>10^44 erg s-1) Lyman alpha emission lines at absolute 1450 angstrom continuum magnitudes of M1450~-22 mag. Its rest-frame Lyman alpha equivalent width (EW) is 370+/-30 angstrom. In the 2 hour Keck/MOSFIRE spectrum in Y band, the high-ionization CIV 1548,1550 doublet emission line was clearly detected with FWHM =120+/-20 km s-1 and a total rest-frame EW of 37-5+6 angstrom. We also report the detection of weak continuum emission, and the tentative detection of OIII] 1661,1666 in the 4 hour J band spectrum. Judging from the UV magnitude, line widths, luminosities, and EWs of Lyman alpha and CIV, we suggest that this source is a reionization-era analog of classical type-II AGNs, although there is a possibility that it represents a new population of AGN/galaxy composite objects in the early universe. We compare the properties of J1423-0018 to intermediate-redshift type-II AGNs and CIV emitters seen in z=6-7 galaxy samples. Further observations of other metal emission lines in the rest-frame UV or optical, and X-ray follow-up observations of the z=6-7 narrow-line quasars are needed for more robust diagnostics and to determine their nature., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We studied the absorption features of CO lines against the continuum originating from the heated dust in the obscuring tori around active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We investigated the formation of absorption lines corresponding to the CO rotational transitions using three-dimensional non-LTE line transfer simulations considering the dust thermal emission. As in Papers I--III of this series, we performed post-processed radiative transfer calculations using the "radiation-driven fountain model" (wada2016}, which yields a geometrically thick obscuring structure around the nucleus. This model is consistent with the spectral energy distribution of the nearest type-2 Seyfert galaxy, the Circinus galaxy. We found that the continuum-subtracted channel maps of $J = 4-3$ and higher transitions show absorption regions along the disk mid-plane for an edge-on viewing angle. The spectra consist of multiple absorption and emission features, reflecting the internal inhomogeneous and turbulent structure of the torus. The deepest absorption feature is caused by the gas on the near-side of the torus between $r =10$ and 15 pc, which is located in front of the AGN-heated dust inside $r \simeq 5$ pc. We also found that a spatial resolution of 0.5--1.0 pc is necessary to resolve the absorption features. Moreover, the inclination angle must be close to the edge-on angle (i.e., $\sim 85^\circ$) to observe the absorption features. The findings of the present study imply that combining our radiation-hydrodynamic model with high-resolution observations of CO (7-6) by ALMA can provide new information about the internal structure of the molecular tori in nearby AGNs., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Astrophysical Journal

We present ALMA [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations ($0''.70 \times 0''.56$ resolution) toward HSC J124353.93$+$010038.5 (J1243$+$0100) at $z = 7.07$, the only low-luminosity ($M_{\rm 1450} > -25$ mag) quasar currently known at $z > 7$. The FIR continuum is bright (1.52 mJy) and resolved with a total luminosity of $L_{\rm FIR} = 3.5 \times 10^{12}~L_\odot$. The spatially extended component is responsible for $\sim 40\%$ of the emission. The area-integrated [CII] spectrum shows a broad wing (${\rm FWHM} = 997$ km s$^{-1}$, $L_{\rm [CII]} = 1.2 \times 10^9~L_\odot$) as well as a bright core (${\rm FWHM} = 235$ km s$^{-1}$, $L_{\rm [CII]} = 1.9 \times 10^9~L_\odot$). This wing is the first detection of a galactic-scale quasar-driven outflow (atomic outflow rate $> 447~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) at $z > 7$. The estimated large mass loading factor of the total outflow (e.g., $\gtrsim 9$ relative to the [CII]-based SFR) suggests that this outflow will soon quench the star-formation of the host. The core gas dynamics are governed by rotation, with a rotation curve suggestive of a compact bulge ($\sim 3.3 \times 10^{10}~M_\odot$), although it is not yet spatially resolved. Finally, we found that J1243$+$0100 has a black hole mass-to-dynamical mass ratio (and -to-bulge mass ratio) of $\sim 0.4\%$ ($\sim 1\%$), consistent with the local value within uncertainties. We present a supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass measurement in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC7469 using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the atomic-${\rm [CI]}$(1-0) and molecular-$^{12}$CO(1-0) emission lines at the spatial resolution of $\approx0.3$" (or $\approx$ 100 pc). These emissions reveal that NGC7469 hosts a circumnuclear gas disc (CND) with a ring-like structure and a two-arm/bi-symmetric spiral pattern within it, surrounded by a starbursting ring. The CND has a relatively low $\sigma/V\approx0.35$ ($r\sim0.5$") and $\sim0.19$ ($r>0.5"$), suggesting that the gas is dynamically settled and suitable for dynamically deriving the mass of its central source. As is expected from X-ray dominated region (XDR) effects that dramatically increase an atomic carbon abundance by dissociating CO molecules, we suggest that the atomic [CI](1-0) emission is a better probe of SMBH masses than CO emission in AGNs. Our dynamical model using the ${\rm [CI]}$(1-0) kinematics yields a $M_{\rm BH}=1.78^{+2.69}_{-1.10}\times10^7$M$_\odot$ and $M/L_{\rm F547M}=2.25^{+0.40}_{-0.43}$ (M$_\odot$/L$_\odot$). The model using the CO(1-0) kinematics also gives a consistent $M_{\rm BH}$ with a larger uncertainty, up to an order of magnitude, i.e.\ $M_{\rm BH}=1.60^{+11.52}_{-1.45}\times10^7$M$_\odot$. This newly dynamical $M_{\rm BH}$ is $\approx$ 2 times higher than the mass determined from the reverberation mapped (RM) method using emissions arising in the unresolved broad-line region (BLR). Given this new $M_{\rm BH}$, we are able to constrain the specific RM dimensionless scaling factor of $f=7.2^{+4.2}_{-3.4}$ for the AGN BLR in NGC7469. The gas within the unresolved BLR thus has a Keplerian virial velocity component and the inclination of $i\approx11.0^\circ$$_{-2.5}^{+2.2}$, confirming its face-on orientation in a Seyfert 1 AGN by assuming a geometrically thin BLR model., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables. We present the results of ALMA band-5 (~170 GHz) observations of the merging ultraluminous infrared galaxy, the "Superantennae" (IRAS 19254-7245) at z=0.0617, which has been diagnosed as containing a luminous obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). In addition to dense molecular line emission (HCN, HCO+, and HNC J = 2-1), we detect a highly luminous (~6e4Lsun) 183 GHz H2O 3(1,3)-2(2,0) emission line. We interpret the strong H2O emission as largely originating in maser amplification in AGN-illuminated dense and warm molecular gas, based on (1) the spatially compact (<220 pc) nature of the H2O emission, unlike spatially resolved (>500 pc) dense molecular emission, and (2) a strikingly different velocity profile from, and (3) significantly elevated flux ratio relative to, dense molecular emission lines. H2O maser emission, other than the widely studied 22 GHz 6(1,6)-5(2,3) line, has been expected to provide important information on the physical properties of gas in the vicinity of a central mass-accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH), because of different excitation energy. We here demonstrate that with highly sensitive ALMA, millimetre 183 GHz H2O maser detection is feasible out to >270 Mpc, opening a new window to scrutinize molecular gas properties around a mass-accreting SMBH far beyond the immediately local universe., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. We present ALMA [C II] 158 $\mu$m line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations toward HSC J120505.09$-$000027.9 (J1205$-$0000) at $z = 6.72$ with the beam size of $\sim 0''.8 \times 0''.5$ (or 4.1 kpc $\times$ 2.6 kpc), the most distant red quasar known to date. Red quasars are modestly reddened by dust, and are thought to be in rapid transition from an obscured starburst to an unobscured normal quasar, driven by powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback which blows out a cocoon of interstellar medium (ISM). The FIR continuum of J1205$-$0000 is bright, with an estimated luminosity of $L_{\rm FIR} \sim 3 \times 10^{12}~L_\odot$. The [C II] line emission is extended on scales of $r \sim 5$ kpc, greater than the FIR continuum. The line profiles at the extended regions are complex and broad (FWHM $\sim 630-780$ km s$^{-1}$). Although it is not practical to identify the nature of this extended structure, possible explanations include (i) companion/merging galaxies and (ii) massive AGN-driven outflows. For the case of (i), the companions are modestly star-forming ($\sim 10~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$), but are not detected by our Subaru optical observations ($y_{\rm AB,5\sigma} = 24.4$ mag). For the case of (ii), our lower-limit to the cold neutral outflow rate is $\sim 100~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The outflow kinetic energy and momentum are both much smaller than what predicted in energy-conserving wind models, suggesting that the AGN feedback in this quasar is not capable of completely suppressing its star formation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present measurements of the size of the quasar proximity zone ($R_p$) for eleven low-luminosity ($-26.16\leq M_{1450}\leq-22.83$) quasars at $z\sim6$, discovered by the Subaru High-$z$ Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars project (SHELLQs). Our faint quasar sample expands the $R_p$ measurement down to $M_{1450}=-22.83$ mag, where more common quasar populations dominate at the epoch. We restrict the sample to quasars whose systemic redshifts have been precisely measured by [CII] 158 $\mu$m or MgII $\lambda$2798 emission lines. We also update the $R_p$ measurements for 26 luminous quasars presented in Eilers et al. (2017)(arXiv:1703.02539) by using the latest systemic redshift results. The luminosity dependence on $R_p$ is found to be consistent with the theoretical prediction assuming highly ionized intergalactic medium. We find a shallow redshift evolution of the luminosity-corrected $R_p$, $R_{p,{\rm corr}}^{-25}$ ($R_{p, \rm corr}^{-25}\propto(1+z)^{-3.79\pm1.72}$) over $5.8\lesssim z \lesssim6.6$. This trend is steeper than that of Eilers et al. (2017) but significantly shallower than those of the earlier studies. Our results suggest that $R_{p,\rm corr}$ is insensitive to the neutral fraction of the universe at $z\sim6$. Four quasars show exceptionally small $R_{p,\rm corr}^{-25}$ ($ \lesssim0.90$ proper Mpc), which could be the result of their young age ($<10^4$ yr) in the reionization epoch, though statistics is still small., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present ALMA ~0.02"-resolution observations of the nucleus of the nearby (~14 Mpc) type-2 AGN NGC 1068 at HCN/HCO+/HNC J=3-2 lines, as well as at their 13C isotopologue and vibrationally excited lines, to scrutinize the morphological/dynamical/chemical/physical properties of dense molecular gas in the putative dusty molecular torus around a mass-accreting supermassive black hole. We confirm almost east-west-oriented dense molecular gas emission both morphologically and dynamically, which we regard as coming from the torus. Bright emission is compact (<3 pc), and low-surface-brightness emission extends out to 5-7 pc. These dense molecular gas properties are not symmetric between the eastern and western torus. The HCN J=3-2 emission is stronger than the HCO+ J=3-2 emission within the ~7 pc torus region, with an estimated dense molecular mass of (0.4-1.0)x10^6Msun. We interpret that HCN abundance is enhanced in the torus. We detect signatures of outflowing dense molecular gas and a vibrationally excited HCN J=3-2 line. Finally, we find that in the innermost (<1 pc) part of the torus, the dense molecular line rotation velocity, relative to the systemic velocity, is the opposite of that in the outer (>2 pc) part, in both the eastern and western torus. We prefer a scenario of counter-rotating dense molecular gas with innermost almost-Keplerian-rotation and outer slowly rotating (far below Keplerian) components. Our high-spatial-resolution dense molecular line data reveal that torus properties of NGC 1068 are much more complicated than the simple axi-symmetrically rotating torus picture in the classical AGN unification paradigm., Comment: 45 pages, 20 Figures. We present the first discovery of dust-reddened quasars (red quasars) in the high-z universe (z >5.6). This is a result from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which is based on the sensitive multi-band optical imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. We identified four red quasar candidates from the spectroscopically confirmed 93 high-z quasars in the SHELLQs sample, based on detections in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data at 3.4 and 4.6 um (rest-frame ~5000-6500 A). The amount of dust reddening was estimated with spectral energy distribution (SED) fits over optical and mid-infrared wavelengths. Two of the four candidates were found to be red quasars with dust reddening of E(B-V) > 0.1. The remaining SHELLQs quasars without individual WISE detections are significantly fainter in the WISE bands and bluer than the red quasars, although we did detect them in the W1 band in a stacked image. We also conducted the same SED fits for high-z optically-luminous quasars, but no red quasar was found. This demonstrates the power of Subaru HSC to discover high-z red quasars, which are fainter than the limiting magnitudes of past surveys in the rest-frame ultraviolet, due to dust extinction., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ

We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2), $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1), and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) emission lines around the type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) of NGC 7469 ($z = 0.0164$) at $\sim 100$ pc resolutions. The CO lines are bright both in the circumnuclear disk (central $\sim 300$ pc) and the surrounding starburst (SB) ring ($\sim 1$ kpc diameter), with two bright peaks on either side of the AGN. By contrast, the [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) line is strongly peaked on the AGN. Consequently, the brightness temperature ratio of [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) to $^{13}$CO(2-1) is $\sim 20$ at the AGN, as compared to $\sim 2$ in the SB ring. Our local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE models indicate that the enhanced line ratios (or CI enhancement) are due to an elevated C$^0$/CO abundance ratio ($\sim 3-10$) and temperature ($\sim 100-500$ K) around the AGN as compared to the SB ring (abundance ratio $\sim 1$, temperature $\lesssim 100$ K), which accords with the picture of the X-ray-dominated Region (XDR). Based on dynamical modelings, we also provide CO(1-0)-to- and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$)-to-molecular mass conversion factors at the central $\sim 100$ pc of this AGN as $\alpha_{\rm CO} = 4.1$ and $\alpha_{\rm CI} = 4.4~M_\odot$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$^{-1}$, respectively. A series of gravitational instabilities in a circumnuclear gas disk (CND) are required to trigger gas transport to a central supermassive black hole (SMBH) and ignite Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). A test of this scenario is to investigate whether an enhanced molecular gas mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm mol}$) is found in the CND-scale of quasars relative to a comparison sample of inactive galaxies. Here we performed sub-kpc resolution CO(2-1) observations with ALMA of four low-redshift ($z \sim 0.06$), luminous ($\sim 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$) quasars with each matched to a different star-forming galaxy, having similar redshift, stellar mass, and star-formation rate. We detected CO(2-1) emission from all quasars, which show diverse morphologies. Contrary to expectations, $\Sigma_{\rm mol}$ of the quasar sample, computed from the CO(2-1) luminosity, tends to be smaller than the comparison sample at $r < 500$ pc; there is no systematic enhancement of $\Sigma_{\rm mol}$ in our quasars. We discuss four possible scenarios that would explain the lower molecular gas content (or CO(2-1) luminosity as an actual observable) at the CND-scale of quasars, i.e., AGN-driven outflows, gas-rich minor mergers, time-delay between the onsets of a starburst-phase and a quasar-phase, and X-ray-dominated region (XDR) effects on the gas chemical abundance and excitation. While not extensively discussed in the literature, XDR effects can have an impact on molecular mass measurements particularly in the vicinity of luminous quasar nuclei; therefore higher resolution molecular gas observations, which are now viable using ALMA, need to be considered., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables (including 1 table and 1 figure in the appendix). We report spatial distributions of the Fe-K$\alpha$ line at 6.4 keV and the CO($J$ = 2--1) line at 230.538 GHz in NGC 2110, which are respectively revealed by $Chandra$ and ALMA at $\approx$ 0.5 arcsec. A $Chandra$ 6.2--6.5 keV-to-3.0--6.0 keV image suggests that the Fe-K$\alpha$ emission extends preferentially in a northwest-to-southeast direction out to $\sim$ 3 arcsec, or 500 pc, on each side. Spatially-resolved spectral analyses support this by finding significant Fe-K$\alpha$ emission lines only in northwest and southeast regions. Moreover, their equivalent widths are found $\sim$ 1.5 keV, indicative for the fluorescence by nuclear X-ray irradiation as the physical origin. By contrast, CO($J$ = 2--1) emission is weak therein. For quantitative discussion, we derive ionization parameters by following an X-ray dominated region (XDR) model. We then find them high enough to interpret the weakness as the result of X-ray dissociation of CO and/or H$_2$. Another possibility also remains that CO molecules follow a super-thermal distribution, resulting in brighter emission in higher-$J$ lines. Further follow-up observations are encouraged to draw a conclusion on what predominantly changes the inter-stellar matter properties, and whether the X-ray irradiation eventually affects the surrounding star formation as an AGN feedback., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. We report the results of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) 15 mm observation of the Phoenix galaxy cluster possessing an extreme star-burst brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) at the cluster center. We spatially resolved radio emission around the BCG, and found diffuse bipolar and bar-shape structures extending from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) of the BCG. They are likely radio jets/lobes, whose sizes are ~10-20 kpc and locations are aligned with X-ray cavities. If we assume that the radio jets/lobes expand with the sound velocity, their ages are estimated to be ~10 Myr. We also found compact radio emissions near the center and suggest that they are another young bipolar jets with ~1 Myr of age. Moreover, we found extended radio emission surrounding the AGN and discussed the possibility that the component is a product of the cooling flow, by considering synchrotron radiation partially absorbed by molecular clumps, free-free emission from the warm ionized gas, and the spinning dust emission from dusty circum-galactic medium., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted in March 29 2019, accepted for publication in PASJ in April 12 2020
