- Abstract
In many countries, English as a foreign/second language (L2) teaching has become compulsory in urban and rural public schools. In rural areas, the challenges for the implementation of this state-sanctioned policy have been explored among L2 teaching specialists. However, this mixed-methods study considered a different teacher group and examined the struggles and initiatives of generalist teachers who are obligated to teach English in rural schools. To this end, data were collected from 115 teachers in 17 rural secondary schools in the Southeast of Mexico. First, the participants completed a survey with closed-ended questions that elicited information about teacher education, teaching experience and knowledge of the rural school system. Then, a subsample of participants completed an individual thematized semi-structured interview. They were selected on the basis of L2 teacher education involvement. In the survey data, response patterns were identified using frequency analyses. The interview data were analyzed using categorical aggregation. The data revealed that the generalist teachers struggle with L2 professionalization, sociocultural and instructional challenges. Nonetheless, only few participants have been engaged in L2 teacher education which could help them overcome these challenges. Instead, they rely upon limited strategies to counteract the day-today challenges at the expense of effective L2 teaching practices.

- Abstract
Worldwide, curricular changes and financial investments are currently underway to promote the integration of technology in public education and English language learning at a young age. This study examines the ICTs that have become part of the daily instructional practices and educational settings of teachers of English who work with young learners in public schools. To this end, this mixed-methods study draws on a quantitative descriptive-exploratory design and a qualitative multiple-case study. The quantitative data were collected through a Likert questionnaire administered to 28 secondary school teachers of English across 17 municipalities in five regions of Southeast Mexico and 2,944 learners. The qualitative data were gathered from a subsample of six teachers through longitudinal classroom observations, teacher and administrator interviews, and school visits. The non-parametric analyses of the quantitative data and the categorical aggregation analyses of the qualitative data reveal that the use of some multimedia and mobile-assisted communication resources is emerging in the L2 public classrooms. In line with findings from other international contexts, variables that seem particular to public education for young learners and their school setting, however, led teachers to prefer using their own technological devices that included laptops, multimedia material, and cellphones, rather than those in the schools.

- Abstract

J., Chapman, J. P., The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the inability to feel pleasure towards music — or musical anhedonia — is part of the psychological construct of anhedonia (DSM-5) or whether they are both independent constructs, as suggested by the field of cognitive neuroscience. To assess this objective, six unpublished musical compositions were created to evoke basic emotions. We analysed the level of arousal and valence in a sample of 153 music professionals and 303 students (M = 17.58 years, SD = 4.16) and were able to verify a high consistency between the results of both groups. By using a structural equation model, we subsequently observed a statistically significant high correlation (r = .63, p < .001) between the latent means of valence (pleasure evoked by musical fragments) and levels of social anhedonia, measured by the Anticipatory and Consummatory Interpersonal Pleasure Scale (ACIPS).

- Abstract
Neurofeedback is a neuronal self-regulation technique that teaches people to modulate their brain frequencies using visual and auditory reinforcements presented on a computer screen. To assess the effect of neurofeedback training in children with ADHD as far as improved attention and impulse control, and analyze whether or not there are differences between the inattentive and hyperactive subtypes. Fifty children diagnosed with ADHD participated in the study: 14 comprised the control group, and 36 the experimental group (16 with the inattentive ADHD subtype, 20 with the hyperactive ADHD subtype). Attention and impulse control were assessed using the Integrated Visual Auditory CPT (IVA/CPT). Results indicated that the predominantly inattentive group showed significant differences on the Control Scale (p = .023, d = 1.31) and the Attention Scale (p < .01, d = 1.89) of the IVA/CPT; meanwhile the predominantly hyperactive group showed significant improvement on the Control Scale ( p = .016, d = 1.21). The control group exhibited no significant differences on either of the two scales ( p > .5). In terms of theta/beta ratio, no significant differences were detected ( p = .10) between ADHD subtypes. The findings suggest that neurofeedback training using the theta/beta protocol was more effective in the predominantly inattentive subset of individuals with ADHD., Depto. de Psicología Experimental, Procesos Cognitivos y Logopedia, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
The application of metacognitive strategies is considered a basic skill of the student at any educational level. In the present study, we evaluate the reduced version of the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI-R) in Spanish, a selfreport instrument designed to measure the metacognitive awareness of students and their perception of the strategies that they use while they are reading school materials. MARSI-R is formed by three subscales: (a) global reading strategies (GRS), (b) problemsolving strategies, and (c) strategies to support reading. We conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in a Spanish student sample (N = 570) and the results shown relative inadequate fit for the proposed theoretical three-factor model. More important, the three subscales presented a high level of inter-correlation, which raises the need to assess to what extent the construct should be considered as unidimensional. We conducted two additional CFA models: a unidimensional model and a bifactor S-1 model, and the results indicated the presence of a strong general factor related to the GRS subscale. These results have important implications, since they imply that it is more appropriate to use the total score of the instrument derived of the S-1 model instead of the scores derived from each subscale. The bifactor S-1 model has allowed us to develop a closer approximation between the psychometric model and the theoretical model., Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (Spain), Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
The incorporation in the teaching of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) that are evolving towards proposals that incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents a great opportunity for more meaningful learning. There are few AI initiatives aimed at teachers. This research uses an Intelligent Pedagogical Assistance System (SIAP) designed to help the teacher to design their classes, self-evaluating progress in different items to achieve more participatory classes that promote oral competence. The SIAP was used for ten weeks in an experimental design with a control group: 188 Secondary Education students: 84 intervention group and 104 comparison group. The indicators included showed how, as the teaching items were achieved, oral competence improved. In addition, in an independent questionnaire a positive change in self-concept about different communication skills was observed in the intervention group., Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Depto. de Psicología Experimental, Procesos Cognitivos y Logopedia, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
There is a series of conventions governing how Confirmatory Factor Analysis gets applied, from minimum sample size to the number of items representing each factor, to estimation of factor loadings so they may be interpreted. In their implementation, these rules sometimes lead to unjustified decisions, because they sideline important questions about a model’s practical significance and validity. Conducting a Monte Carlo simulation study, the present research shows the compensatory effects of sample size, number of items, and strength of factor loadings on the stability of parameter estimation when Confirmatory Factor Analysis is conducted. The results point to various scenarios in which bad decisions are easy to make and not detectable through goodness of fit evaluation. In light of the findings, these authors alert researchers to the possible consequences of arbitrary rule following while validating factor models. Before applying the rules, we recommend that the applied researcher conduct their own simulation studies, to determine what conditions would guarantee a stable solution for the particular factor model in question., Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

A total of 303 students participated, 139 in secondary education and 164 in the first year of university (M = 17.58 years; SD = 4.16). The results show higher alexithymia levels in the female participants than in the male participants, mainly in the difficulty identifying feelings (DIF) and difficulty describing feelings (DDF) factors, and higher in the secondary students than in the university students, especially in externally oriented thinking (EOT). In terms of the identification of emotions through auditory stimuli, the EOT factor showed a strong predictive effect for the emotions of surprise and anger. For the visual stimuli, the EOT factor showed predictive validity for identifying happiness, while the DDF factor showed predictive validity for identifying sadness. We conclude that there is a relationship between alexithymia levels and emotion recognition, which varies depending on the nature of the stimulus., Depto. de Didáctica de las Lenguas, Artes y Educación Física, Fac. de Educación, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
There is broad consensus on the need to foster oral skills in middle school due to their inherent importance and because they serve as a tool for learning and acquiring other competences. In order to facilitate the assessment of communicative competence, we hereby propose a model which establishes five key dimensions for effective oral communication: interaction management; multimodality and prosody; textual coherence and cohesion; argumentative strategies; and lexicon and terminology. Based on this model, we developed indicators to measure the proposed dimensions, thus generating a self-report tool to assess oral communication in middle school. Following an initial study conducted with 168 students (mean age = 12.47 years, SD = 0.41), we selected 22 items with the highest discriminant power, while in a second study carried out with a sample of 960 students (mean age 14.11 years, SD = 0.97), we obtained evidence concerning factorial validity and the relationships between oral skills, emotional intelligence and metacognitive strategies related to metacomprehension. We concluded that the proposed model and its derived measure constitute an instrument with good psychometric properties for a reliable and valid assessment of students’ oral competence in middle school., Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Depto. de Psicología Experimental, Procesos Cognitivos y Logopedia, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is considered a fundamental variable for a person’s adequate psychosocial adjustment. In education, its importance transcends the level of interpersonal relationships, and has been proposed as a variable that somehow influences academic performance, although there is controversy about whether its effect is direct or, rather, an intermediate variable. The present research analyses, from a sample of 327 students (52.6% female and mean age = 14.5), the relationship of EI with respect to the knowledge and management of oral communication and reading meta-comprehension strategies, which should directly affect different educational outcomes. In order to assess both the direct and indirect effects of these variables, a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach has been proposed, due to its versatility and the possibility of jointly analysing reflective and formative measures. The results show that EI indirectly affects reading self-concept and reading comprehension, as it is involved in the management and handling of both effective oral communication and reading meta-comprehension strategies., Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (Spain), Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
The Madrid Regional Government, through the Madri+d Knowledge Foundation, promotes each year a Science Week. In November of 2015, under the slogan "Knows, Experience, See'', the regional government opened its fifteenth edition. On that occasion the initiative was also included in the activities of International Year of Light and Light‐Related Technologies proclaimed by the United Nations. The proposal we are making here was part of the activities undertaken by the Complutense University in the 15th Science Week of the Community of Madrid. The course / workshop, entitled “Light-Art. Creation of glass lighting devices blown and shaped with torch” was an initiative of the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Glass Center and the Ultrafast Lasers Center. The Art-Based Research action was focused on the theoretical conceptualization, the empirical practices and the academic methods of a set of self-chosen artistic problem formulations. The aim of the present work is to provide information relating to the dynamics generated in the configuration and development of a type of artistic projects related to forms of artistic thought, communication and procedure, linking science and art. The activity seeks to bring together a series of elements of theoretical knowledge –light, colour, form and glass- which allow us to get inside the complex world of artistic endeavour considered as the product of a systemic and creative processual way of thinking. The teaching methodology followed in the subject acknowledges the convergence of five methodologies simultaneously: Skills-Based Learning (design of activities which allow students to acquire generic skills, related to the profession, and specific skills, related to the subject); Problem-Based Learning (learning through carefully constructed projects which pose specific challenges for the students to solve); the Case Method (analysis and study of works carried out by qualified professionals); Learning by Symbolic Description (course lectures or t, Depto. de Dibujo y Grabado, Fac. de Bellas Artes, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Introduction: Writing is a tool for constructing and modifying knowledge. However, it is not easy to evaluate spontaneous writing tasks. In the present study, we selected and analysed a series of quality indicators to assess spontaneous or productive writing, examining the level of difficulty of the indicators and the relationship between the application of metacognitive strategies when writing and the quality of spontaneous writing products. Method: Participants consisted of 480 Spanish students in their 5th and 6th years of primary education and 1st and 2nd years compulsory secondary education (40% females and 60% males). Several tests were administered: a PROESC subtest, EVAPROMES and story writing. In addition, we collected the marks obtained in the previous year for the subject of Spanish language. Results: Spontaneous writing product quality was related to academic achievement in Spanish language, and metacognition, as measured by EVAPROMES, was the underlying variable that explained differences in the difficulty of the quality indicators. Discussion and conclusions: The differences observed in an analysis of indicators by educational level (primary vs compulsory secondary education) appeared to be due to the methodology employed by teachers in class and the standards required. Implementing spontaneous writing tasks that involve the application of metacognitive strategies (meta-writing) would exert a positive impact on students' academic performance.

This study extends the previous research on the structure of the Conformity to Feminine Norms Inventory (CFNI-84) by applying the bifactor model. The CFNI was administered to a large sample of Spanish women. The Confirmatory Factorial Analysis (CFA) study in Spain supported the results obtained in the USA. A brief measure of the instrument (the CFNI-45r) is developed by eliminating the items which have a content overlap or non-salient factorial loading. With this brief version a competition took place among theoretically plausible models (the one-dimensional model, the one for independent factors, the one for correlated factors, the second-order one and the bifactor), and it was seen that the best fit was obtained from the bifactor model, that is, the existence of a general factor where the construct measured is developed. There is a discussion on the theoretical implications of this bifactor model which would support the original structure of the instrument with facets of the conformity to feminine norms which contribute to a general factor., Author(s): Marta Evelia Aparicio-García [sup.1] , Jesús María Alvarado-Izquierdo [sup.2] Author Affiliations: (Aff1) 0000 0001 2157 7667, grid.4795.f, Department of Personality, Evaluation and Psychological Treatment II (Individual Differences and Work [...]

Finally, the authors gratefully the reviewers’s suggestions., The majority of the applications of ultrashort laser pulses require a control of its spectral bandwidth. In this paper we show the capability of volume phase holographic gratings recorded in photopolymerizable glasses for spectral pulse reshaping of ultrashort laser pulses originated in an Amplified Ti: Sapphire laser system and its second harmonic. Gratings with high laser induce damage threshold (LIDT) allowing wide spectral bandwidth operability satisfy these demands. We have performed LIDT testing in the photopolymerizable glass showing that the sample remains unaltered after more than 10 million pulses with 0,75 TW/cm^2 at 1 KHz repetition rate. Furthermore, it has been developed a theoretical model, as an extension of the Kogelnik's theory, providing key gratings design for bandwidth operability. The main features of the diffracted beams are in agreement with the model, showing that non-linear effects are negligible in this material up to the fluence threshold for laser induced damage. The high versatility of the grating design along with the excellent LIDT indicates that this material is a promising candidate for ultrashort laser pulses manipulations., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación-MICINN, España, Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación, España, Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología CONACyT, México, CNPq (Brazilian federal grant agency), Depto. de Óptica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

© 2015 IEEE. This work was supported in part by the MCINN projects AYA2009-13300-C03-03 and Consolider SAUUL CSD2007-00013, by MCINN Grant CTQ2008-02578/BQU, and by UCM-BSCH, This paper proposes a technique to build SPICE micromodels of integrated circuits in bipolar technology appropriate to simulate single event transients. First of all, we will show how to obtain SPICE models of the internal transistors from texts in the scientific and academic literature. Next, several strategies to figure out the internal structure of the integrated circuits and bias point will be shown. Finally, simulation results will be compared to data issue from experiments, either performed by the authors or by other researchers. As the simulations do not require expensive software or hardware, this paper can be a start point for research groups with small budget or for academic purposes at universities., MICINN (Spain), Universidad Complutense de Madrid-BSCH, Depto. de Estructura de la Materia, Física Térmica y Electrónica, Depto. de Química Física, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, Fac. de Ciencias Químicas, TRUE, pub

These experiments indicated that, as a general rule, load resistors modify the size of the transients. SPICE simulations helped to understand the reasons of this behavior and showed that the distortion is related to the necessity of providing or absorbing current from the load resistor, which forces the amplifier to modify its operation point. Finally, load effects were successfully used to explain the distortion of single event transients in typical feed-back networks and the results were used to explain experimental data reported elsewhere., Depto. de Estructura de la Materia, Física Térmica y Electrónica, Depto. de Química Física, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, Fac. de Ciencias Químicas, TRUE, pub

The publication of this work was supported by Servicio Nacional de Aprendizagem Industrial (SENAI) - DR/Bahia, Brazil., Spatial shaping of ultrashort laser beams at the focal plane is theoretically analyzed. The description of the pulse is performed by its expansion in terms of Laguerre-Gaussian orthonormal modes. This procedure gives both a comprehensive interpretation of the propagation dynamics and the required signal to encode onto a spatial light modulator for spatial shaping, without using iterative algorithms. As an example, pulses with top-hat and annular spatial profiles are designed and their dynamics analyzed. The interference of top-hat pulses is also investigated finding potential applications in high precision pump-probe experiments (without using delay lines) and for the creation of subwavelength ablation patterns. In addition, a novel class of ultrashort pulses possessing non-stationary orbital angular momentum is also proposed. These exotic pulses provide additional degrees of freedom that open up new perspectives in fields such as laser-matter interaction and micro-machining., Ministerio de Economía y Competividad (España), Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), Brazil, PQ fellowship of CNPq, Servicio Nacional de Aprendizagem Industrial (SENAI) - DR/Bahia, Brazil, Depto. de Óptica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

Permission from IEEE must be obtained for all other users, including reprinting/ republishing this material for advertising or promotional purposes, creating new collective works for resale or redistribution to servers or lists, or reuse of any copyrighted components of this work in other works, The peak detector effect is a phenomenon that makes single event transients much longer once an error amplifier switches from linear to saturation zone due to the presence of external capacitors. This is so-called since it was discovered in a simple voltage reference in which a parasitic lossy peak detector was unwillingly built in the output stage. In this paper, peak detector effect is generalized to explain the appearance of long duration pulses in typical low dropout voltage regulator built with discrete devices. This effect has been related to the way in which the negative feedback loop is closed and to the kind of pass device in the output stage. Thus, if the linear voltage regulator consists in an error amplifier the output of which controls a current source, the peak detector effect will occur if the current source is unidirectional, the output load does not drain enough current and is in parallel with an external capacitor., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Banco Santander - Central Hispano, Depto. de Estructura de la Materia, Física Térmica y Electrónica, Depto. de Química Física, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, Fac. de Ciencias Químicas, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
This study compares the performance of two approaches in analysing fourpoint Likert rating scales with a factorial model: the classical factor analysis (FA) and the item factor analysis (IFA). For FA, maximum likelihood and weighted least squares estimations using Pearson correlation matrices among items are compared. For IFA, diagonally weighted least squares and unweighted least squares estimations using items polychoric correlation matrices are compared. Two hundred and ten conditions were simulated in a Monte Carlo study considering: one to three factor structures (either, independent and correlated in two levels), medium or low quality of items, three different levels of item asymmetry and five sample sizes. Results showed that IFA procedures achieve equivalent and accurate parameter estimates; in contrast, FA procedures yielded biased parameter estimates. Therefore, we do not recommend classical FA under the conditions considered. Minimum requirements for achieving accurate results using IFA procedures are discussed., Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

The relationship between aggression, pleasure and decision-making is analyzed applying a mediation model of structural equation modeling (SEM). The study explored it in two samples of similar age: young offenders and university students. A close relationship between aggression and pleasure was found in both populations. But, whereas in the case of university students, this congruence leads to a normal or adjusted behavior, in the case of young offenders, however, a mismatched evaluation of conflict and provocation leads them to make unacceptable violence decisions., Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
In the context of Positive Psychology VIA-Is test was applied to 186 first grade of Social Work students at the University Complutense of Madrid during 2011-2012. The aim of this investigation was to establish the profile of virtues and strengths which the student considers the key for the future performance as a social worker. The virtues of Humanity and Fairness were considered the most relevant by the students, as expected, because of these virtues are essential when they come to influence the will of others, respecting the individuality of user to a state of wellbeing (Peterson &Seligman, 2004)., Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
The Cronbach's alpha is the most widely used method for estimating internal consistency reliability. This procedure has proved very resistant to the passage of time, even if its limitations are well documented and although there are better options as omega coefficient or the different versions of glb, with obvious advantages especially for applied research in which the ítems differ in quality or have skewed distributions. In this paper, using Monte Carlo simulation, the performance of these reliability coefficients under a one-dimensional model is evaluated in terms of skewness and no tau-equivalence. The results show that omega coefficient is always better choice than alpha and in the presence of skew items is preferable to use omega and glb coefficients even in small samples., Depto. de Psicobiología y Metodología en Ciencias del Comportamiento, Fac. de Psicología, TRUE, pub
