1. Guaranteed Global Minimum of Electronic Hamiltonian 1-Norm via Linear Programming in the Block Invariant Symmetry Shift (BLISS) Method

Abstract

The cost of encoding a system Hamiltonian in a digital quantum computer as a linear combination of unitaries (LCU) grows with the 1-norm of the LCU expansion. The Block Invariant Symmetry Shift (BLISS) technique reduces this 1-norm by modifying the Hamiltonian action on only the undesired electron-number subspaces. Previously, BLISS required a computationally expensive nonlinear optimization that was not guaranteed to find the global minimum. Here, we introduce various reformulations of this optimization as a linear programming problem, which guarantees optimality and significantly reduces the computational cost. We apply BLISS to industrially-relevant homogeneous catalysts in active spaces of up to 76 orbitals, finding substantial reductions in both the spectral range of the modified Hamiltonian and the 1-norms of Pauli and fermionic LCUs. Our linear programming techniques for obtaining the BLISS operator enable more efficient Hamiltonian simulation and, by reducing the Hamiltonian's spectral range, offer opportunities for improved LCU groupings to further reduce the 1-norm.

2. Efficient Strategies for Reducing Sampling Error in Quantum Krylov Subspace Diagonalization

Abstract

Within the realm of early fault-tolerant quantum computing (EFTQC), quantum Krylov subspace diagonalization (QKSD) has emerged as a promising quantum algorithm for the approximate Hamiltonian diagonalization via projection onto the quantum Krylov subspace. However, the algorithm often requires solving an ill-conditioned generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) involving erroneous matrix pairs, which can significantly distort the solution. Since EFTQC assumes limited-scale error correction, finite sampling error becomes a dominant source of error in these matrices. This work focuses on quantifying sampling errors during the measurement of matrix element in the projected Hamiltonian examining two measurement approaches based on the Hamiltonian decompositions: the linear combination of unitaries and diagonalizable fragments. To reduce sampling error within a fixed budget of quantum circuit repetitions, we propose two measurement strategies: the shifting technique and coefficient splitting. The shifting technique eliminates redundant Hamiltonian components that annihilate either the bra or ket states, while coefficient splitting optimizes the measurement of common terms across different circuits. Numerical experiments with electronic structures of small molecules demonstrate the effectiveness of these strategies, reducing sampling costs by a factor of 20-500., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Computationally hard tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their resources for simulation, analysis, and data processing. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. In this paper, we provide a perspective on how quantum-centric supercomputing can help address critical computational problems in materials science, the challenges to face in order to solve representative use cases, and new suggested directions.

Abstract

Linear combination of unitaries (LCU) decompositions have appeared as one of the main tools for encoding operators on quantum computers, allowing efficient implementations of arbitrary operators. In particular, LCU approaches present a way of encoding information from the electronic structure Hamiltonian into a quantum circuit. Over the past years, many different decomposition techniques have appeared for the electronic structure Hamiltonian. Here we present the Majorana Tensor Decomposition (MTD), a framework that unifies existing LCUs and offers novel decomposition methods by using popular low-rank tensor factorizations.

Abstract

The industrial manufacturing of chemicals consumes a significant amount of energy and raw materials. In principle, the development of new catalysts could greatly improve the efficiency of chemical production. However, the discovery of viable catalysts can be exceedingly challenging because it is difficult to know the efficacy of a candidate without experimentally synthesizing and characterizing it. This study explores the feasibility of using fault-tolerant quantum computers to accelerate the discovery of homogeneous catalysts for nitrogen fixation, an industrially important chemical process. It introduces a set of ground-state energy estimation problems representative of calculations needed for the discovery of homogeneous catalysts and analyzes them on three dimensions: economic utility, classical hardness, and quantum resource requirements. For the highest utility problem considered, two steps of a catalytic cycle for the generation of cyanate anion from dinitrogen, the economic utility of running these computations is estimated to be $200,000, and the required runtime for double-factorized phase estimation on a fault-tolerant superconducting device is estimated under conservative assumptions to be 139,000 QPU-hours. The computational cost of an equivalent DMRG calculation is estimated to be about 400,000 CPU-hours. Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

7. Exactly solvable Hamiltonian fragments obtained from a direct sum of Lie algebras

Abstract

Exactly solvable Hamiltonians are useful in the study of quantum many-body systems using quantum computers. In the variational quantum eigensolver, a decomposition of the target Hamiltonian into exactly solvable fragments can be used for evaluation of the energies via repeated quantum measurements. In this work, we apply more general classes of exactly solvable qubit Hamiltonians than previously considered to address the Hamiltonian measurement problem. The most general exactly solvable Hamiltonians are defined by the condition that, within each simultaneous eigenspace of a set of Pauli symmetries, the Hamiltonian acts effectively as an element of a direct sum of so(N) Lie algebras, and can therefore be measured using a combination of unitaries in the associated Lie group, Clifford unitaries, and mid-circuit measurements. Application of such Hamiltonians to decomposing molecular electronic Hamiltonians via graph partitioning techniques shows a reduction in the total number of measurements required to estimate the expectation value compared with previously used exactly solvable qubit Hamiltonians.

8. Estimating Trotter Approximation Errors to Optimize Hamiltonian Partitioning for Lower Eigenvalue Errors

Abstract

One of the ways to encode many-body Hamiltonians on a quantum computer to obtain their eigen-energies through Quantum Phase Estimation is by means of the Trotter approximation. There were several ways proposed to assess the quality of this approximation based on estimating the norm of the difference between the exact and approximate evolution operators. Here, we would like to explore how these different error estimates are correlated with each other and whether they can be good predictors for the true Trotter approximation error in finding eigenvalues. For a set of small molecular systems we calculated the exact Trotter approximation errors of the first order Trotter formulas for the ground state electronic energies. Comparison of these errors with previously used upper bounds show almost no correlation over the systems and various Hamiltonian partitionings. On the other hand, building the Trotter approximation error estimation based on perturbation theory up to a second order in the time-step for eigenvalues provides estimates with very good correlations with the Trotter approximation errors. The developed perturbative estimates can be used for practical time-step and Hamiltonian partitioning selection protocols, which are paramount for an accurate assessment of resources needed for the estimation of energy eigenvalues under a target accuracy., Comment: 3 figures

Abstract

Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Hard computational tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their simulation, analysis, and data resources. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. In this paper, we provide a perspective on how quantum-centric supercomputing can help address critical computational problems in materials science, the challenges to face in order to solve representative use cases, and new suggested directions., Comment: 65 pages, 15 figures; comments welcome

Abstract

We consider the question of how correlated the system hardness is between classical algorithms of electronic structure theory in ground state estimation and quantum algorithms. To define the system hardness for classical algorithms we employ empirical criterion based on the deviation of electronic energies produced by coupled cluster and configuration interaction methods from the exact ones along multiple bonds dissociation in a set of molecular systems. For quantum algorithms, we have selected the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) and Quantum Phase Estimation (QPE) methods. As characteristics of the system hardness for quantum methods, we analyzed circuit depths for the state preparation, the number of quantum measurements needed for the energy expectation value, and various cost characteristics for the Hamiltonian encodings via Trotter approximation and linear combination of unitaries (LCU). Our results show that the quantum resource requirements are mostly unaffected by classical hardness, with the only exception being the state preparation part, which contributes to both VQE and QPE algorithm costs. However, there are clear indications that constructing the initial state with a significant overlap with the true ground state (>10%) is easier than obtaining the state with an energy expectation value within chemical precision. These results support optimism regarding the identification of a molecular system where a quantum algorithm excels over its classical counterpart, as quantum methods can maintain efficiency in classically challenging systems., Comment: 11 pages

11. Experience in Using Low-Dose Computed Tomography in Children and Adolescents with Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract

Objective: to assess the possibilities of using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in children and adolescents with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).Material and methods. The design of the study, which included patients aged 2–17 years with active pulmonary TB and post-TB changes treated in Central Tuberculosis Research Institute in 2021–2023, consisted of two parts as follows: part 1 (a prospective selective study) – independent assessment of LDCT vs standard-dose CT (SDCT) diagnostic accuracy by two radiologists in 44 patients with TB process stabilization; part 2 – cohort one-time assessment of LDCT image quality in 144 patients at different phases of TB treatment. LDCT was performed on the Somatom Emotion 16 CT scanner (Siemens, Germany) by filtered backprojection algorithm; SDCT was conducted on the Somatom go.Up CT scanner by iterative reconstruction algorithm. In patients aged 2–12 years, pediatric protocols, and in patients aged 13–17, standard protocols were used. Radiation exposure was evaluated considering the effective dose (ED).Results. In patients aged 13–17 years, the noise level was lower and the signal-to-noise ratio was higher with LDCT for all anatomical structures, with the exception of pulmonary parenchyma. In patients aged 2–12 years, the signal-to-noise ratio was the same or slightly higher in SDCT. In the subjective assessment, good image quality was noted with a high correlation between the assessments of radiologists. ED was 2.17 times lower for LDCT than for SDCT in adolescents and 1.91 times lower in children. In patients aged 2–3 years, the quality essentially depended on their immobility during the procedure, though under sedation it was good in 92% of cases.Conclusion. In conditions of sufficient immobility of the patient, LDCT provided good image quality of tuberculous changes with a decrease in ED compared to SDCT by 2.17 times in adolescents and by 1.91 times in children.

Abstract

We report an updated measurement of the $\nu_{\mu}$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{\mu,\pi} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(\theta_{\mu}) > 0.8$ and $\cos(\theta_{\pi}) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured $\nu_{\mu}$ CC coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on $^{12}C$ is $(2.98 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.) \substack{ +0.49 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{ (Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The new measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced cross section on $^{12}{C}$ is $(3.05 \pm 0.71 (stat.) \pm 0.39 (syst.) \substack{ +0.74 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{(Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The results are compatible with both the NEUT 5.4.0 Berger-Sehgal (2009) and GENIE 2.8.0 Rein-Sehgal (2007) model predictions.

13. Coherent control based on quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects: Role of coherences and timing

Abstract

The quantum-Zeno and anti-Zeno effects (QZE/AZE) are known for a long time, in a quantum system with coupled levels, the measurement of a particular level population can lead to either acceleration (i.e. AZE) or retardation (i.e. QZE) of its population transfer to other levels. Here we consider how one can control the population flow from a coupled quantum state by measurement at a particular time, and what system parameters are responsible for that. We propose a framework for analysis of quantum Zeno dynamics based on time-dependent density matrix perturbation theory. This framework allows us to clearly separate state populations from their coherences and to predict appearance of either QZE or AZE. We illustrate our analysis on two model systems: 1) two coupled levels and 2) a level coupled to a continuum. In both cases dynamics of quantum coherences play a crucial role, and perturbative considerations allow us to predict the effect of projective measurements. In addition, we have extended our consideration to a closely related coherent control scenario, a unitary transformation flipping a sign of a state in a coherent superposition describing the system wavefunction.

16. Extension of exactly-solvable Hamiltonians using symmetries of Lie algebras

Abstract

Exactly-solvable Hamiltonians that can be diagonalized using relatively simple unitary transformations are of great use in quantum computing. They can be employed for decomposition of interacting Hamiltonians either in Trotter-Suzuki approximations of the evolution operator for the quantum phase estimation algorithm, or in the quantum measurement problem for the variational quantum eigensolver. One of the typical forms of exactly solvable Hamiltonians is a linear combination of operators forming a modest size Lie algebra. Very frequently such linear combinations represent non-interacting Hamiltonians and thus are of limited interest for describing interacting cases. Here we propose the extension where coefficients in these combinations are substituted by polynomials of the Lie algebra symmetries. This substitution results in a more general class of solvable Hamiltonians and for qubit algebras is related to the recently proposed non-contextual Pauli Hamiltonians. In fermionic problems, this substitution leads to Hamiltonians with eigenstates that are single Slater determinants but with different sets of single-particle states for different eigenstates. The new class of solvable Hamiltonians can be measured efficiently using quantum circuits with gates that depend on the result of a mid-circuit measurement of the symmetries.

Abstract

Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

18. Block-Invariant Symmetry Shift: Preprocessing technique for second-quantized Hamiltonians to improve their decompositions to Linear Combination of Unitaries

Abstract

Computational cost of energy estimation for molecular electronic Hamiltonians via Quantum Phase Estimation (QPE) grows with the difference between the largest and smallest eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian. In this work we propose a preprocessing procedure that reduces the norm of the Hamiltonian without changing its eigenspectrum for the target states of a particular symmetry. The new procedure, Block-Invariant Symmetry Shift (BLISS), builds an operator T such that the cost of implementing H-T is reduced compared to that of H, yet H-T acts on the subspaces of interest the same way as H does. BLISS performance is demonstrated for Linear Combination of Unitaries (LCU)-based QPE approaches on a set of small molecules. Using the number of electrons as the symmetry specifying the target set of states, BLISS provided a factor of 2 reduction of 1-norm for several LCU decompositions compared to their unshifted versions., Comment: 10 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure

Abstract

We propose a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for solving the time-independent Schr\"odinger equation for atomic and molecular collisions. The algorithm is based on the $S$-matrix version of the Kohn variational principle, which computes the fundamental scattering $S$-matrix by inverting the Hamiltonian matrix expressed in the basis of square-integrable functions. The computational bottleneck of the classical algorithm -- symmetric matrix inversion -- is addressed here using the variational quantum linear solver (VQLS), a recently developed noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) algorithm for solving systems of linear equations. We apply our algorithm to single and multichannel quantum scattering problems, obtaining accurate vibrational relaxation probabilities in collinear atom-molecule collisions. We also show how the algorithm could be scaled up to simulate collisions of large polyatomic molecules. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to calculate scattering cross sections and rates for complex molecular collisions on NISQ quantum processors, opening up the possibility of scalable digital quantum computation of gas-phase bimolecular collisions and reactions of relevance to astrochemistry and ultracold chemistry., Comment: 8 pages,6 figures

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result., Comment: Updated discussion in Sec. Abstract

The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\Delta{}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $\Delta\chi^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=0,\pi$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2\sigma$ credible level using a flat prior in $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2\sigma$ using a flat prior in $\sin\delta_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2\theta_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract

The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) remains one of the most popular near-term quantum algorithms for solving the electronic structure problem. Yet, for its practicality, the main challenge to overcome is improving the quantum measurement efficiency. Numerous quantum measurement techniques have been developed recently, but it is unclear how these state-of-the-art measurement techniques will perform in extensions of VQE for obtaining excited electronic states. Assessing the measurement techniques' performance in the excited state VQE is crucial because the measurement requirements in these extensions are typically much greater than in conventional VQE, as one must measure the expectation value of multiple observables in addition to that of the electronic Hamiltonian. Here, we adapt various measurement techniques to two widely used excited state VQE algorithms: multi-state contraction and quantum subspace expansion. Then, the measurement requirements of each measurement technique are numerically compared. We find that the best methods for multi-state contraction are ones utilizing Hamiltonian data and wavefunction information to minimize the number of measurements. In contrast, randomized measurement techniques are more appropriate for quantum subspace expansion, with many more observables of vastly different energy scales to measure. Nevertheless, when the best possible measurement technique for each excited state VQE algorithm is considered, significantly fewer measurements are required in multi-state contraction than in quantum subspace expansion.

24. Assessment of various Hamiltonian partitionings for the electronic structure problem on a quantum computer using the Trotter approximation

Abstract

Solving the electronic structure problem via unitary evolution of the electronic Hamiltonian is one of the promising applications of digital quantum computers. One of the practical strategies to implement the unitary evolution is via Trotterization, where a sequence of short-time evolutions of fast-forwardable (i.e. efficiently diagonalizable) Hamiltonian fragments is used. Given multiple choices of possible Hamiltonian decompositions to fast-forwardable fragments, the accuracy of the Hamiltonian evolution depends on the choice of the fragments. We assess efficiency of multiple Hamiltonian partitioning techniques using fermionic and qubit algebras for the Trotterization. Use of symmetries of the electronic Hamiltonian and its fragments significantly reduces the Trotter error. This reduction makes fermionic-based partitioning Trotter errors lower compared to those in qubit-based techniques. However, from the simulation-cost standpoint, fermionic methods tend to introduce quantum circuits with a greater number of T-gates at each Trotter step and thus are more computationally expensive compared to their qubit counterparts., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

25. Growth reduction of similarity transformed electronic Hamiltonians in qubit space

Abstract

Accurately solving the electronic structure problem through the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is hindered by the available quantum resources of current and near-term devices. One approach to relieving the circuit depth requirements for VQE is to "pre-process" the electronic Hamiltonian by a similarity transformation incorporating some degree of electronic correlation, with the remaining correlation left to be addressed by the circuit ansatz. This often comes at the price of a substantial increase in the number of terms to measure in the similarity transformed Hamiltonian. In this work, we propose an efficient approach to sampling elements from the complete Pauli group for $N$ qubits which minimize the onset of new terms in the transformed Hamiltonian, while facilitating substantial energy lowering. We benchmark the growth-mitigating generator selection technique for ground state energy estimations applied to models of the H$_4$, N$_2$ and H$_2$O molecular systems. It is found that utilizing a selection procedure which obtains the growth-minimizing generator from the set of operators with maximal energy gradient is the most competitive approach to reducing the onset of Hamiltonian terms while achieving systematic energy lowering of the reference state., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

26. Detecting Suicide Risk in Online Counseling Services: A Study in a Low-Resource Language

Abstract

With the increased awareness of situations of mental crisis and their societal impact, online services providing emergency support are becoming commonplace in many countries. Computational models, trained on discussions between help-seekers and providers, can support suicide prevention by identifying at-risk individuals. However, the lack of domain-specific models, especially in low-resource languages, poses a significant challenge for the automatic detection of suicide risk. We propose a model that combines pre-trained language models (PLM) with a fixed set of manually crafted (and clinically approved) set of suicidal cues, followed by a two-stage fine-tuning process. Our model achieves 0.91 ROC-AUC and an F2-score of 0.55, significantly outperforming an array of strong baselines even early on in the conversation, which is critical for real-time detection in the field. Moreover, the model performs well across genders and age groups.

27. Quantum Kinetic Rates within the Nonequilibrium Steady State

Abstract

The nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of a quantum network is central to a host of physical and biological scenarios. Examples include natural processes such as vision and photosynthesis, as well as technical devices such as photocells, both activated by incoherent light (e.g. sunlight) and leading to quantum transport. Here, a completely general approach to defining components of a quantum network in the NESS, and obtaining rates of processes between these components is provided. Quantum effects are explicitly included throughout, both in (a) defining network components via projection operators, and (b) in determining the role of coherences in rate processes. As examples, the methodology is applied to model cases, two versions of the V-level system, and to the spin-boson model, wherein the role of the environment and of internal system properties in determining the rates is examined. In addition, the role of Markovian vs. non-Markovian contributions is quantified, exposing conditions under which NESS rates can be obtained by perturbing the nonequilibrium steady state.

28. Fluid fermionic fragments for optimizing quantum measurements of electronic Hamiltonians in the variational quantum eigensolver

Abstract

Measuring the expectation value of the molecular electronic Hamiltonian is one of the challenging parts of the variational quantum eigensolver. A widely used strategy is to express the Hamiltonian as a sum of measurable fragments using fermionic operator algebra. Such fragments have an advantage of conserving molecular symmetries that can be used for error mitigation. The number of measurements required to obtain the Hamiltonian expectation value is proportional to a sum of fragment variances. Here, we introduce a new method for lowering the fragments' variances by exploiting flexibility in the fragments' form. Due to idempotency of the occupation number operators, some parts of two-electron fragments can be turned into one-electron fragments, which then can be partially collected in a purely one-electron fragment. This repartitioning does not affect the expectation value of the Hamiltonian but has non-vanishing contributions to the variance of each fragment. The proposed method finds the optimal repartitioning by employing variances estimated using a classically efficient proxy for the quantum wavefunction. Numerical tests on several molecules show that repartitioning of one-electron terms lowers the number of measurements by more than an order of magnitude.

Abstract

We consider different Linear Combination of Unitaries (LCU) decompositions for molecular electronic structure Hamiltonians. Using these LCU decompositions for Hamiltonian simulation on a quantum computer, the main figure of merit is the 1-norm of their coefficients, which is associated with the quantum circuit complexity. It is derived that the lowest possible LCU 1-norm for a given Hamiltonian is half of its spectral range. This lowest norm decomposition is practically unattainable for general Hamiltonians; therefore, multiple practical techniques to generate LCU decompositions are proposed and assessed. A technique using symmetries to reduce the 1-norm further is also introduced. In addition to considering LCU in the Schr\"odinger picture, we extend it to the interaction picture, which substantially further reduces the 1-norm.

30. Improving quantum measurements by introducing 'ghost' Pauli products

Abstract

Reducing the number of measurements required to estimate the expectation value of an observable is crucial for the variational quantum eigensolver to become competitive with state-of-the-art classical algorithms. To measure complicated observables such as a molecular electronic Hamiltonian, one of the common strategies is to partition the observable into linear combinations (fragments) of mutually commutative Pauli products. The total number of measurements for obtaining the expectation value is then proportional to the sum of variances of individual fragments. We propose a method that lowers individual fragment variances by modifying the fragments without changing the total observable expectation value. Our approach is based on adding Pauli products ("ghosts") that are compatible with members of multiple fragments. The total expectation value does not change because a sum of coefficients for each "ghost" Pauli product introduced to several fragments is zero. Yet, these additions change individual fragment variances because of the non-vanishing contributions of "ghost" Pauli products within each fragment. The proposed algorithm minimizes individual fragment variances using a classically efficient approximation of the quantum wavefunction for variance estimations. Numerical tests on a few molecular electronic Hamiltonian expectation values show several-fold reductions in the number of measurements in the "ghost" Pauli algorithm compared to those in the other recently developed techniques.

Abstract

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures. 32. Fidelity overhead for non-local measurements in variational quantum algorithms

Abstract

Measuring quantum observables by grouping terms that can be rotated to sums of only products of Pauli $\hat z$ operators (Ising form) is proven to be efficient in near term quantum computing algorithms. This approach requires extra unitary transformations to rotate the state of interest so that the measurement of a fragment's Ising form would be equivalent to measurement of the fragment for the unrotated state. These extra rotations allow one to perform a fewer number of measurements by grouping more terms into the measurable fragments with a lower overall estimator variance. However, previous estimations of the number of measurements did not take into account non-unit fidelity of quantum gates implementing the additional transformations. Through a circuit fidelity reduction, additional transformations introduce extra uncertainty and increase the needed number of measurements. Here we consider a simple model for errors introduced by additional gates needed in schemes involving grouping of commuting Pauli products. For a set of molecular electronic Hamiltonians, we confirm that the numbers of measurements in schemes using non-local qubit rotations are still lower than those in their local qubit rotation counterparts, even after accounting for uncertainties introduced by additional gates.

Abstract

The existence of non-zero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple SM neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs). In this white paper we discuss the present experimental status of HNLs including colliders, beta decay, accelerators, as well as astrophysical and cosmological impacts. We discuss the importance of continuing to search for HNLs, and its potential impact on our understanding on key fundamental questions, and additionally we outline the future prospects for next-generation future experiments or upcoming accelerator run scenarios., Comment: 82 pages, 34 figures. Abstract

This white paper provides a comprehensive review of our present understanding of experimental neutrino anomalies that remain unresolved, charting the progress achieved over the last decade at the experimental and phenomenological level, and sets the stage for future programmatic prospects in addressing those anomalies. It is purposed to serve as a guiding and motivational "encyclopedic" reference, with emphasis on needs and options for future exploration that may lead to the ultimate resolution of the anomalies. We see the main experimental, analysis, and theory-driven thrusts that will be essential to achieving this goal being: 1) Cover all anomaly sectors -- given the unresolved nature of all four canonical anomalies, it is imperative to support all pillars of a diverse experimental portfolio, source, reactor, decay-at-rest, decay-in-flight, and other methods/sources, to provide complementary probes of and increased precision for new physics explanations; 2) Pursue diverse signatures -- it is imperative that experiments make design and analysis choices that maximize sensitivity to as broad an array of these potential new physics signatures as possible; 3) Deepen theoretical engagement -- priority in the theory community should be placed on development of standard and beyond standard models relevant to all four short-baseline anomalies and the development of tools for efficient tests of these models with existing and future experimental datasets; 4) Openly share data -- Fluid communication between the experimental and theory communities will be required, which implies that both experimental data releases and theoretical calculations should be publicly available; and 5) Apply robust analysis techniques -- Appropriate statistical treatment is crucial to assess the compatibility of data sets within the context of any given model., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021 by the NF02 Topical Group (Understanding Experimental Neutrino Anomalies). 35. Controlling energy conservation in quantum dynamics with independently moving basis functions: Application to Multi-Configuration Ehrenfest

Abstract

Application of the time-dependent variational principle to a linear combination of frozen-width Gaussians describing the nuclear wavefunction provides a formalism where the total energy is conserved. The computational downside of this formalism is that trajectories of individual Gaussians are solutions of a coupled system of differential equations, limiting implementation to serial propagation algorithms. To allow for parallelization and acceleration of the computation, independent trajectories based on simplified equations of motion were suggested. Unfortunately, within practical realizations involving finite Gaussian bases, this simplification leads to breaking the energy conservation. We offer a solution for this problem by using Lagrange multipliers to ensure the energy and norm conservation regardless of basis function trajectories or basis completeness. We illustrate our approach within the Multi-Configuration Ehrenfest method considering a linear vibronic coupling model.

36. Deterministic improvements of quantum measurements with grouping of compatible operators, non-local transformations, and covariance estimates

Abstract

Obtaining the expectation value of an observable on a quantum computer is a crucial step in the variational quantum algorithms. For complicated observables such as molecular electronic Hamiltonians, a common strategy is to present the observable as a linear combination of measurable fragments. The main problem of this approach is a large number of measurements required for accurate sampling of the observable's expectation value. We consider several partitioning schemes based on grouping of commuting multi-qubit Pauli products with the goal of minimizing the number of measurements. Three main directions are explored: 1) grouping commuting operators using the greedy approach, 2) involving non-local unitary transformations for measuring, and 3) taking advantage of compatibility of some Pauli products with several measurable groups. The last direction gives rise to a general framework that not only provides improvements over previous methods but also connects measurement grouping approaches with recent advances in techniques of shadow tomography. Following this direction, we develop two new measurement schemes that achieve a severalfold reduction in the number of measurements for a set of model molecules compared to previous state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract

We present a review of the Unitary Coupled Cluster (UCC) ansatz and related ans\"atze which are used to variationally solve the electronic structure problem on quantum computers. A brief history of coupled cluster (CC) methods is provided, followed by a broad discussion of the formulation of CC theory. This includes touching on the merits and difficulties of the method and several variants, UCC among them, in the classical context, to motivate their applications on quantum computers. In the core of the text, the UCC ansatz and its implementation on a quantum computer are discussed at length, in addition to a discussion on several derived and related ans\"atze specific to quantum computing. The review concludes with a unified perspective on the discussed ans\"atze, attempting to bring them under a common framework, as well as with a reflection upon open problems within the field.

Abstract

The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) that was constructed and operated in the CERN North Area at the end of the H4 beamline. This detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), which will be constructed at the Sandford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector incorporates full-size components as designed for DUNE and has an active volume of $7\times 6\times 7.2$~m$^3$. The H4 beam delivers incident particles with well-measured momenta and high-purity particle identification. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation between 2018 and 2020 demonstrates the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design. This paper describes the design, construction, assembly and operation of the detector components.

Abstract

The observation of 236 MeV muon neutrinos from kaon-decay-at-rest (KDAR) originating in the core of the Sun would provide a unique signature of dark matter annihilation. Since excellent angle and energy reconstruction are necessary to detect this monoenergetic, directional neutrino flux, DUNE with its vast volume and reconstruction capabilities, is a promising candidate for a KDAR neutrino search. In this work, we evaluate the proposed KDAR neutrino search strategies by realistically modeling both neutrino-nucleus interactions and the response of DUNE. We find that, although reconstruction of the neutrino energy and direction is difficult with current techniques in the relevant energy range, the superb energy resolution, angular resolution, and particle identification offered by DUNE can still permit great signal/background discrimination. 41. Analytic gradients in variational quantum algorithms: Algebraic extensions of the parameter-shift rule to general unitary transformations

Abstract

Optimization of unitary transformations in Variational Quantum Algorithms benefits highly from efficient evaluation of cost function gradients with respect to amplitudes of unitary generators. We propose several extensions of the parametric-shift-rule to formulating these gradients as linear combinations of expectation values for generators with general eigen-spectrum (i.e. with more than two eigenvalues). Our approaches are exact and do not use any auxiliary qubits, instead they rely on a generator eigen-spectrum analysis. Two main directions in the parametric-shift-rule extensions are 1) polynomial expansion of the exponential unitary operator based on a limited number of different eigenvalues in the generator and 2) decomposition of the generator as a linear combination of low-eigenvalue operators (e.g. operators with only 2 or 3 eigenvalues). These techniques have a range of scalings for the number of needed expectation values with the number of generator eigenvalues from quadratic (for polynomial expansion) to linear and even $\log_2$ (for generator decompositions). This allowed us to propose efficient differentiation schemes superior to previous approaches for commonly used 2-qubit transformations (e.g. match-gates, transmon and fSim gates) and $\hat S^2$-conserving fermionic operators for the variational quantum eigensolver.

Abstract

Abstract The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $$19.7(16.3)\times 10^{20}$$ 19.7 ( 16.3 ) × 10 20 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $$4.7\times 10^{20}$$ 4.7 × 10 20 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 and the impact of priors on the $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}$$ δ CP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}$$ sin 2 θ 23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 from reactors, $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$$ sin 2 θ 23 = 0 . 561 - 0.032 + 0.021 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\varDelta {}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times 10^{-3}~\text {eV}^2$$ Δ m 32 2 = 2 . 494 - 0.058 + 0.041 × 10 - 3 eV 2 using constant $$\varDelta \chi ^{2}$$ Δ χ 2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$$ δ CP = - 1 . 97 - 0.70 + 0.97 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=0,\pi $$ δ CP = 0 , π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ credible level using a flat prior in $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}},$$ δ CP , and just below $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ using a flat prior in $$\sin \delta _{\textrm{CP}}.$$ sin δ CP . When the external constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 is removed, $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times 10^{-3},$$ sin 2 θ 13 = 28 . 0 - 6.5 + 2.8 × 10 - 3 , in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment consisting of a high-power, broadband neutrino beam, a highly capable near detector located on site at Fermilab, in Batavia, Illinois, and a massive liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) far detector located at the 4850L of Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The long-baseline physics sensitivity calculations presented in the DUNE Physics TDR, and in a related physics paper, rely upon simulation of the neutrino beam line, simulation of neutrino interactions in the near and far detectors, fully automated event reconstruction and neutrino classification, and detailed implementation of systematic uncertainties. The purpose of this posting is to provide a simplified summary of the simulations that went into this analysis to the community, in order to facilitate phenomenological studies of long-baseline oscillation at DUNE. Simulated neutrino flux files and a GLoBES configuration describing the far detector reconstruction and selection performance are included as ancillary files to this posting. A simple analysis using these configurations in GLoBES produces sensitivity that is similar, but not identical, to the official DUNE sensitivity. Abstract

With the establishment and maturation of the experimental programs searching for new physics with sizeable couplings at the LHC, there is an increasing interest in the broader particle and astrophysics community for exploring the physics of light and feebly-interacting particles as a paradigm complementary to a New Physics sector at the TeV scale and beyond. FIPs 2020 has been the first workshop fully dedicated to the physics of feebly-interacting particles and was held virtually from 31 August to 4 September 2020. The workshop has gathered together experts from collider, beam dump, fixed target experiments, as well as from astrophysics, axions/ALPs searches, current/future neutrino experiments, and dark matter direct detection communities to discuss progress in experimental searches and underlying theory models for FIPs physics, and to enhance the cross-fertilisation across different fields. FIPs 2020 has been complemented by the topical workshop "Physics Beyond Colliders meets theory", held at CERN from 7 June to 9 June 2020. This document presents the summary of the talks presented at the workshops and the outcome of the subsequent discussions held immediately after. Abstract

This paper reports the first T2K measurement of the transverse kinematic imbalance in the single-$\pi^+$ production channel of neutrino interactions. We measure the differential cross sections in the muon-neutrino charged-current interaction on hydrocarbon with a single $\pi^+$ and at least one proton in the final state, at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The extracted cross sections are compared to the predictions from different neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators. Overall, the results show a preference for models which have a more realistic treatment of nuclear medium effects including the initial nuclear state and final-state interactions.

Abstract

Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants -- neutron stars and black holes -- are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations towards a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

The T2K experiment reports updated measurements of neutrino and antineutrino oscillations using both appearance and disappearance channels. This result comes from an exposure of $14.9~(16.4) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. Significant improvements have been made to the neutrino interaction model and far detector reconstruction. An extensive set of simulated data studies have also been performed to quantify the effect interaction model uncertainties have on the T2K oscillation parameter sensitivity. T2K performs multiple oscillation analyses that present both frequentist and Bayesian intervals for the PMNS parameters. For fits including a constraint on \ssqthonethree from reactor data and assuming normal mass ordering T2K measures $\sin^2\theta_{23} = 0.53^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ and $\Delta{}m^2_{32} = (2.45 \pm 0.07) \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$c$^{-4}$. The Bayesian analyses show a weak preference for normal mass ordering (89% posterior probability) and the upper $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ octant (80% posterior probability), with a uniform prior probability assumed in both cases.
