Na przestrzeni lat zmianom ulegają warunki, w których wykonywana jest praca i wy-korzystywane w niej narzędzia. Jednocześnie przeobrażeniom ulega motywowanie pracowników. Celem badania zaprezentowanego w artykule stało się poznanie metod, jakie są stosowane do motywowania pracowników w przedsiębiorstwie, w którym stosuje się pracę zdalną. Cel ten został osiągnięty na podstawie studium przypadku średniej polskiej firmy, która umożliwiała swoim pracownikom pracę zdalną jeszcze przed pandemią. Wyniki badania wskazują, że znamienitą rolę w motywowaniu pracowników pracujących zdalnie, jak i tych, którzy pracują w siedzibie firmy, odgrywa kultura organizacyjna i środowisko pracy oparte na bezpieczeństwie psychologicznym oraz tworzeniu i utrzymywaniu długoterminowych relacji pomiędzy przedsiębiorstwem i jego pracownikami

Considering the impacts of the most recent global economic crisis in 2008/2009, this paper explores how firm size, type of business activity and approach to internationalisation influence SMEs’ survival. Based on the literature in the field, we developed three hypotheses regarding determinants of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) survival. We tested these hypotheses in a 7-year quantitative study and a survey of 344 SMEs in Poland – the seventh largest market in the European Union. Our findings reveal that, in the context of crisis, internationalisation acts as a stimulus for SMEs and influences their long-term sustainability, with businesses operating in foreign markets being more likely to survive after a global crisis. However, neither business size nor the type of business activity appears to have an impact on SMEs’ survival in a post-global economic crisis environment. Our paper extends knowledge about factors influencing a firm’s post-crisis survival and proposes a new framework for understanding characteristics of SMEs and their propensity to survive in a post-crisis context. In our conclusions, we discuss implications for SME entrepreneurs showing that, in order to enhance chances of survival, even small and medium enterprises should consider expanding business activities beyond their national markets.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badania, którego celem było poznanie orientacji przedsiębiorczej (OP) przedsiębiorstw działających na polskim rynku oraz jej ocena. Ponadto celem badania była rozpoznanie związku pomiędzy OP i wynikami przedsiębiorstw (mierzonymi z zastosowaniem wybranej miary), a także ustalenie czy na ten związek mają wpływ wybrane zmienne moderujące (wielkość, zasięg rynkowy, rodzaj działalności firmy). Realizacja wyznaczonych celów została osiągnięta w oparciu o badanie pierwotne. Rezultaty z badania wskazują, że przedsiębiorstwa funkcjonujące w Polsce charakteryzują się obecnie umiarkowaną OP. Wyniki dowodzą również, że OP polskich organizacji ma wpływ na ich zyski. Moderatorami tej zależności nie są ani wielkość przedsiębiorstwa, ani rodzaj prowadzonej przez nie działalności, ani jego zasięg rynkowy.

Purpose: The study explores how the disruption caused by Covid-19 has influenced the innovativeness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Poland. It aims to show the examples of innovative ideas introduced by SMEs in times of pandemic to overcome the obstacles that appeared due to fluctuations in the demand and supply because of Covid-19. Design/methodology/approach: The study draws on a qualitative research design and uses case studies. We chose three small and two medium-sized Polish firms specializing in different business areas for analysis. Findings: The analysed organizations due to Covid-19 introduced innovations mainly focused on IT solutions. All of the firms have begun to offer remote work. Moreover, they implemented a new work organization system and a new customer service system. In all cases, the new solutions will be maintained and developed after the end of the pandemic. Research limitations/implications: The study uses five case studies. Practical implications: The outcomes of the study can motivate entrepreneurs to implement innovations as the case studies may inspire them. Moreover, the successes of presented SMEs may convince entrepreneurs that introducing innovations is not difficult and that the effects of innovative changes are measurable and visible in a short time. Thus, they may be encouraged to take action to overcome obstacles in their surroundings. Originality/value: The study develops the knowledge concerning the innovation process in companies in an uncertain, unstable and unpredictable environment.

The paper investigates the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and sustainable firm performance with the mediating role of innovation output in family and non-family businesses in the post-transition economy. In order to analyze these relationships, quantitative research on a sample of 322 Polish organizations was conducted. The research results show a few differences between family and non-family businesses concerning the influence of entrepreneurial orientation on innovativeness and sustainable organizational performance. Moreover, the study reveals the critical role of the proactiveness dimension in shaping long-term firm performance.

Using Giddens’s structuration theory and empirical data from a study with social enterprise stakeholders, the article explores how social entrepreneurs and the structure co-create one another. We show that the development of the contemporary significance of social entrepreneurialism lies in a combination of complex context-specific structural forces and the activities of agents who initiate, demand, and impose change. Social entrepreneurs intentionally tackle social challenges, but their actions bring unintentional results, such as the transfer of state responsibilities onto communities. Direct outputs of their activities introduce indirect outcomes, bringing wider changes in culture and policy. The evolving nature of entrepreneurship and a number of factors that interplay in time and space, and enable and constrain social entrepreneurs, confirm the applicability of Giddens’s theory in the field of social entrepreneurship. The originality of this article derives from revealing mechanisms that enable social entrepreneurs to emerge and reasons for structural change. We also build a “co-creation model of structure and agency” that can be used to “engineer” the process of social entrepreneurship.

Bezpieczeństwo psychologiczne pracowników postrzega się jako jeden z kluczowych czynników prowadzących do poprawy efektywności współczesnych organizacji, a także ich rozwoju. Dlatego też koncepcję bezpieczeństwa psychologicznego implementuje obecnie wiele organizacji traktujących swoich pracowników jako kapitał, który może stanowić o ich konkurencyjności i innowacyjności. Niemniej jednak w Polsce bezpieczeństwo psychologiczne jest zagadnieniem słabo rozpoznawalnym i rzadko badanym. Mając na względzie taki stan rzeczy, w niniejszym artykule podjęto się przedstawienia kierunków badań nad bezpieczeństwem psychologicznym w organizacji z perspektywy dyscypliny nauk o zarządzaniu i jakości oraz zaprezentowania obecnego stanu wiedzy na tej płaszczyźnie. Realizacja tych celów została osiągnięta w oparciu o studia literaturowe obejmujące lata 1994-2020. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy zidentyfikowano cztery główne obszary badań nad bezpieczeństwem psychologicznym w organizacji na płaszczyźnie nauk o zarządzaniu i jakości: (1) istotę bezpieczeństwa psychologicznego; (2) obszary występowania bezpieczeństwa psychologicznego w organizacjach; (3) wpływ bezpieczeństwa psychologicznego na organizację; (4) mechanizmy stojące u podstaw bezpieczeństwa psychologicznego w organizacjach. Prowadzone badania głównie dotyczyły poziomu grupy/zespołu, przy czym problematyka badań na tej płaszczyźnie koncentrowała się przede wszystkim na wydajności w organizacji lub czynnikach wpływających na bezpieczeństwo psychologiczne. W badaniach dotyczących wpływu bezpieczeństwa psychologicznego na organizacje oprócz wydajności najczęściej zajmowano się dzieleniem się informacjami i kreatywnością.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the relationship between family firms’ innovation output and the continuous knowledge development of owner-managers. Moreover, the study aims to investigate the effect of the level of owner-managers’ educational background on family firms’ innovation.Design/methodology/approachThe data originate from a primary research conducted in Poland. A log-linear analysis was used to verify the hypotheses.FindingsThe findings demonstrate that the positive relationship between the higher levels of education of owner-managers and the innovation output of family firms does not exist. However, the innovativeness of family firms is determined by the continuous development of owner-managers’ knowledge. Family firms whose owner-managers continuously expand their knowledge introduce significantly more product and marketing innovations. This relationship appears independent of firm’s size, type of business activity and owner-managers’ educational level.Practical implicationsUnderstanding how the continuous development of owner-managers’ knowledge influence the firm’s innovation output is potentially valuable for managers of family firms. The findings offer also practical suggestions for policymakers on how to support structures that aim to enhance innovation in family enterprises.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the family business literature by presenting quantitative findings describing links between family firms’ innovation outputs and continuous knowledge development of owner-managers. Thus, the study broadens knowledge on factors determining innovation of family firms and influencing family business heterogeneity.

This article explores an understanding of the entrepreneurial behavior of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Poland, one of the emerging markets of the European Union, during the recent period of economic slowdown. It considers the role of accessibility to external financial resources in shaping decisions undertaken by such enterprises. The hypothesis is that, in a period of economic slowdown, SMEs that have difficulty in accessing external sources of financing adopt different strategies than those that have free access to those resources. The findings indicate that access to the external sources of financing is a statistically significant factor determining decisions of SMEs in relation to employment reduction, price reductions on goods/services, suspension of previously planned investments, and an increase in the level of salaries. Consequently, the study is important as it considers factors that impact the success and survival of SMEs in the emerging market; it is also unique, as it investigates these aspects in the recent period of the global economic downturn. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Recent public policies increasingly emphasize the role of communities in service co-production. Collaboration between the state and the public is frequently associated with social enterprise activities. However, the assumption that social enterprises can be successfully built and developed in remote and rural areas might be faulty. Current policy does not recognize contextual factors relating to rural social enterprise development. Drawing on a qualitative study in the Highlands of Scotland the article questions the role of social enterprise in creating sustainable rural communities; it presents promoters and barriers to rural social enterprise development. Findings suggest that although rural communities do not control all the conditions that affect them, they have the ability to adapt to some structural features. This means that in spite of social and economic challenges, rural communities might benefit from rural social enterprise through practising ‘adaptive capacity’.

Instytucje zasileń rzeczowych i informacyjnych przedsiębiorstw na polskim rynku

Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie problematyki e-franchisingu, w szczególności franchisingu internetowego, jak również określenie możliwości rozwoju tej formy prowadzenia działalności w warunkach polskiej gospodarki. Przedstawiono miejsce e-franchisingu w systemach franchisingowych i e-biznesie, możliwości wykorzystania sieci informatycznych w systemach e-franchisingowych, wady i zalety prowadzenia działalności w ramach przedsiębiorstwa indywidualnego, tradycyjnego systemu franchisingowego oraz franchisingu internetowego.

Specyfika sieci franchisingowych na rynku polskim

W artykule przedstawiono główne koszty ponoszone przez uczestników systemów franchisingowych (jest to m.in. opłata wstępna oraz opłaty od uzyskanych profitów) jak i ryzyko uczestnictwa. Na kształtowanie się kosztów wpływ mają różnorakie czynniki, które autorka klasyfikuje jako endogenne (np. alokacja ryzyka między stronami, kondycję systemu franchisingowego czy branżę reprezentowaną przez łańcuch) czy też egzogenne (jak oferowana lokalizacja, potrzeba adaptacji do lokalnych uwarunkowań kulturowych).
