type:Conference Paper, To protect the satellite from the accidents due to spacecraft charging, Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) is developing a device called ELFs-Charm, which stands for ELectron-emitting Film for Spacecraft CHARging Mitigation. ELFs-Charm was mounted on HORYU-II, which was launched to a Polar Earth Orbit in May 2012. From the orbital data, the emitter’s soundness and working principles were confirmed. As a next step, we are considering the practical operation for mitigation of spacecraft charging. The present emission level was not enough to increase the satellite potential. Theoretically, if the emitter can emit more electrons than the incoming electrons, it can increase the satellite potential during the sub-storm. We focus our efforts on improving two parameters. One is the potential difference of the emitter surface. Another one is the threshold voltage of electron emission. A potential difference of the emitter surface depends on the insulator charging capacity due to the secondary electron emissions with each energy gap between the satellite potential and the primary electron energy. The threshold voltage depends on the shape of emitter. We can improve the ELFs-charm emission performance by measurement of these two parameters in ONERA Space Environment vacuum chamber and Kyutech Space Environment chamber. type:Conference Paper, As the electron emission yield induced by electron and photon plays a key role in surface potential of spacecraft materials, the ground based degradations including 500 keV electron and 50 keV proton irradiation with 4 different fluences were conducted for the polyimide film separately. Based on the developed measuring systems, thecomparative measurements of total electron emission yield and photoelectron emission yield were carried out for the virgin and degraded polyimide samples respectively. The total electron emission yield and photoelectron emission yield tended to have different variation tendency after high energy electron and proton irradiation. The Monte-Carlo analysis software Casino and SRIM were used to analysis the distribution and stopping power of electron and proton respectively. Spacecraft orbiting in the Martial upper atmosphere encounters high-energy collision with these molecules. In order to evaluate a risk of material erosion possibility in Martian orbit, a method for ground-based Martian atmospheric simulation was investigated. A laser-detonation hyperthermal beam source was applied and a new pulsed supersonic valve (PSV) system was developed for the Martian atmospheric simulation experiments. Two PSVs were equipped with a nozzle in order to increase freedom of formation of hyperthermal beam with mixture of two types of gases. However, the densities of N2 in sub-LEO are higher than LEO, and the durability of FEP in sub-LEO environment is still unclear. In this study, simultaneous exposure experiment of AO and Ar, which is simulating N2 collision in sub-LEO, was performed on FEP/Ag film samples. It was confirmed that the erosion of FEP by hyperthermal Ar beam was greater than that by AO beam. In addition, the synergistic effect was not be confirmed at the simultaneous exposures of AO and Ar. Abstract

Abstract Background Various cytokines and other compounds are produced in human adipose tissue and might have functions in the adipose tissue. They might be involved in complications associated with obesity and diabetes. Recently, interleukin-8 (IL-8) has been shown to be produced and released from human adipose tissue and/or adipocytes, suggesting IL-8 involvement in some obesity-related health complications. Therefore, we found it of interest to investigate whether IL-8 is involved in the insulin action in human adipocytes. Methods The IL-8 levels in the medium were measured using ELISA. The IL-8 mRNA expression was analyzed using Northern blot analysis. The phosphorylation of Akt was analyzed using Western blot analysis. Furthermore, we examined the effect of IL-8 on the phosphorylation of Akt induced by insulin. Results The level of IL-8 in the medium and the IL-8 mRNA expression after stimulation with either TNF-α, IL-1β, or CRP was significantly enhanced in human adipocytes. It is particularly interesting that IL-8 per se also enhanced IL-8 mRNA expression. The IL-8 induced-IL-8 mRNA expression was inhibited by PD98059 (a MEK inhibitor) or SB203580 (a p38 MAPK inhibitor). The IL-8 inhibited insulin-induced Akt phosphorylation. The inhibitory effect of IL-8 was eliminated by either PD 98059 or SB203580. Conclusion These data suggest that IL-8 is a main adipocytokine producing insulin resistance via the inhibition of insulin-induced Akt phosphorylation in adipocytes. The attenuation of IL-8 action might be a target for prevention of diabetes and its complications.

Abstract

Aims/Introduction: The objective of the present study was to clarify the association of the type and number of first‐degree family history of diabetes (FHD) with the clinical characteristics, especially with residual β‐cell function, in type 2 diabetes patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 1,131 type 2 diabetes patients were recruited and divided into four groups according to FHD information as follows: (i) patients without FHD (FHD−); (ii) those with at least one sibling who had diabetes without parental diabetes (FHD+); (iii) those with one parent (FHD++); or (iv) those with both parents (FHD+++) who had diabetes with or without a sibling with diabetes. Results: The percentages of the FHD−, FHD+, FHD++ and FHD+++ groups were 49.4%, 13.4%, 34.0% and 3.2%, respectively. Patients in the FHD++ and FHD+++ groups were significantly younger at the time of diabetes diagnosis (P < 0.001) than those in the FHD− and FHD+ groups, even after adjusting for confounding factors. In addition, the levels of insulin secretion were significantly lower in the patients in the FHD+, FHD++ and FHD+++ groups than those in the FHD− group (P < 0.05) after adjusting for confounding factors, and the patients in the FHD+++ group presented with the lowest levels of insulin secretion among the four groups. Conclusions: Our results showed that in type 2 diabetes patients, the degree of the associations between FHD and clinical characteristics differs according to the number and the type of FHD. In particular, FHD in both parents is most strongly associated with impaired residual β‐cell function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
