We present the properties of a new organic $S=1$ chain system $m$-NO$_2$PhBNO (abbreviated BoNO). In this biradical system two unpaired electrons from aminoxyl groups are strongly ferromagnetically coupled ($|J_\text{FM}| \gtrsim 500$ K) which leads to the formation of an effective $S=1$ state for each molecule. The chains of BoNO diradicals propagate along the crystallographic $a$ axis. Temperature dependence of the $g$ factor and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) linewidth are consistent with a low-dimensional system with antiferromagnetic interactions. The EPR data further suggest that BoNO is the first known Haldane system with an almost isotropic $g$ factor ($2.0023 \pm 2 \unicode{x2030}$). The magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to $40$ T and low-field susceptibility, together with $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, reveal a dominant intrachain antiferromagnetic exchange coupling of $J_\text{1D} = (11.3\pm0.1)$ K, and attainable critical magnetic fields of $\mu_0 H_\text{c1} \approx 2$ T and $\mu_0 H_\text{c2} \approx 33$ T. These measurements therefore suggest that BoNO is a unique Haldane system with extremely small magnetic anisotropy. Recently, 3D LiDAR has emerged as a promising technique in the field of gait-based person identification, serving as an alternative to traditional RGB cameras, due to its robustness under varying lighting conditions and its ability to capture 3D geometric information. However, long capture distances or the use of low-cost LiDAR sensors often result in sparse human point clouds, leading to a decline in identification performance. To address these challenges, we propose a sparse-to-dense upsampling model for pedestrian point clouds in LiDAR-based gait recognition, named LidarGSU, which is designed to improve the generalization capability of existing identification models. Our method utilizes diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs), which have shown high fidelity in generative tasks such as image completion. In this work, we leverage DPMs on sparse sequential pedestrian point clouds as conditional masks in a video-to-video translation approach, applied in an inpainting manner. We conducted extensive experiments on the SUSTeck1K dataset to evaluate the generative quality and recognition performance of the proposed method. Furthermore, we demonstrate the applicability of our upsampling model using a real-world dataset, captured with a low-resolution sensor across varying measurement distances.

To analyze hydration effects on macromolecular diffusion, the friction coefficients of macromolecules were examined using molecular dynamics simulations with an all-atom model. In the present study, a method was introduced to decompose the molecular friction coefficient into the contributions for each site on the macromolecule. The method was applied to several fullerenols in ambient water. The friction coefficients for the hydrophilic part, such as the OH group, were larger than those for the hydrophobic part, such as the C. The hydration effect did not depend only on the kind of functional group but also on surface roughness. This approach would be useful in explaining the experimentally observed large changes in diffusion coefficients of proteins that were accompanied by conformation changes., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures

In this work the Coulomb effects (Coulomb correlations) in $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs produced in p + Ni collisions at 24 GeV/$c$, are studied using experimental $\pi^+\pi^-$ pair distributions in $Q$, the relative momentum in the pair center of mass system (c.m.s), and its projections $Q_L$ (longitudinal component) and $Q_t$ (transverse component) relative to the pair direction in the laboratory system (l.s.). The $Q$, $Q_L$, and $Q_t$ distributions of the {\sl Coulomb pairs} in the c.m.s. have been simulated assuming they are described by the phase space modified by the known point-like Coulomb correlation function $A_C(Q)$, corrected for small effects due to the nonpoint-like pair production and the strong two-pion interaction. The same distributions of {\sl non-Coulomb pairs} have been simulated according to the phase space, but without $A_C(Q)$. It is shown that the number of {\sl Coulomb pairs} in all $Q_t$ intervals, including the small $Q_t$ (small opening angles $\theta$ in the l.s.) is calculated with the theoretical precision better than 2\%. The comparison of the simulated and experimental numbers of {\sl Coulomb pairs} at small $Q_t$ allows us to check and correct the detection efficiency for the pairs with small $\theta$ (0.06 mrad and smaller). It is shown that {\sl Coulomb pairs} can be used as a new physical tool to check and correct the quality of the simulated events. The special property of the {\sl Coulomb pairs} is the possibility of checking and correcting the detection efficiency, especially for the pairs with small opening angles.

The intensity spectra recovered from the spectroscopic photographic plates were compared with the CCD spectra, and we found the difference between the two was 2.5%.The measurements were taken using a commercial flatbed scanner instead of a microdensitometer. The results indicate that the following two statements are inaccurate: (1) Correct measurement of spectroscopic plates requires a microdensitometer, and a commercial flatbed scanner is insufficient; (2) The spectrophotometric accuracy of spectroscopic plate is approximately 10% accurate. These results will encourage the creation and publication of a digital archive of spectroscopic plates. This paper presents the measurement of spectroscopic plates, the method of recovering intensity spectra from photographic density spectra, the results of comparison with CCD spectra, and discusses the causes of the high accuracy spectra obtained with a commercial flatbed scanner.

Ultimate is a sport in which teams of seven players compete for points by passing a disc into the end zone. A distinctive aspect of Ultimate is that the player holding the disc is unable to move, underscoring the significance of creating space to receive passes. Despite extensive research into space evaluation in sports such as football and basketball, there is a paucity of information available for Ultimate. This study focuses on the 3-on-3 format, which is widely practiced in Ultimate, and evaluates space during offensive play. The data collection process entailed the use of drones for filming and the subsequent correction of the angles for the purpose of obtaining positional data. The model is derived from the pitch control model of soccer and adapted to the rules of Ultimate, where the player holding the disc is stationary. The integration of position and distance weights with pitch control values enables the derivation of space evaluation metrics. The findings of this study indicate that movement to create space and accurate passing into that space are both significant factors in scoring. The concept of Funds of Identity (FOI) comes from a theory of learning that emphasizes the importance of recognizing and using students' cultural, linguistic, and personal backgrounds to enhance their educational experiences. FOI is like a "toolbox" of resources that people gather over time. These resources are shaped by historical, cultural, and social experiences and "are essential for a person's self-definition, self-expression, and self-understanding" (Esteban-Guitart & Moll, 2014). At its core, teaching and learning through an FOI framework means that: (1) students use their imagination, agency, and creativity to connect what they know to who they are in an ongoing way; (2) identity work itself is a subject in the curriculum; and (3) schools use a range of resources and educational practices that identify, develop, and make use of FOI (Esteban-Guitart, 2021). When teachers recognize and work with students' existing resources, students are more likely to demonstrate improved knowledge and academic outcomes.

NanoTerasu, a new 3 GeV synchrotron light source in Japan, began user operation in April 2024. It provides high-brilliance soft to tender X-rays and covers a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to tender X-rays. Its compact storage ring with a circumference of 349 m is based on a four-bend achromat lattice to provide two straight sections in each cell for insertion devices with a natural horizontal emittance of 1.14 nm rad, which is small enough for soft X-rays users. The NanoTerasu accelerator incorporates several innovative technologies, including a full-energy injector C-band linear accelerator with a length of 110 m, an in-vacuum off-axis injection system, a four-bend achromat with B-Q combined bending magnets, and a TM020 mode accelerating cavity with built-in higher-order-mode dampers in the storage ring. This paper presents the accelerator machine commissioning over a half-year period and our model-consistent ring optics correction. The first user operation with a stored beam current of 160 mA is also reported. We summarize the storage ring parameters obtained from the commissioning. Large language models (LLMs) have been extensively studied for their abilities to generate convincing natural language sequences, however their utility for quantitative information retrieval is less well understood. In this paper we explore the feasibility of LLMs as a mechanism for quantitative knowledge retrieval to aid data analysis tasks such as elicitation of prior distributions for Bayesian models and imputation of missing data. We present a prompt engineering framework, treating an LLM as an interface to a latent space of scientific literature, comparing responses in different contexts and domains against more established approaches. Finding the best solution is a common objective in combinatorial optimization (CO). In practice, directly handling constraints is often challenging, incorporating them into the objective function as the penalties. However, balancing these penalties to achieve the desired solution is time-consuming. Additionally, formulated objective functions and constraints often only approximate real-world scenarios, where the optimal solution is not necessarily the best solution for the original real-world problem. One solution is to obtain (i) penalty-diversified solutions with varying penalty strengths for the former issue and (ii) variation-diversified solutions with different characteristics for the latter issue. Users can then post-select the desired solution from these diverse solutions. However, efficiently finding these diverse solutions is more difficult than identifying one. This study introduces Continual Tensor Relaxation Annealing (CTRA) for unsupervised-learning (UL)-based CO solvers, a computationally efficient framework for finding these diverse solutions in a single training run. The key idea is to leverage representation learning capability to automatically and efficiently learn common representations and parallelization. To solve the ''neutron lifetime puzzle,'' where measured neutron lifetimes differ depending on the measurement methods, an experiment with pulsed neutron beam at J-PARC is in progress. In this experiment, neutrons are bunched into 40-cm lengths using a spin flip chopper (SFC), where the statistical sensitivity was limited by the aperture size of the SFC. The SFC comprises three sets of magnetic supermirrors and two resonant spin flippers. In this paper, we discuss an upgrade to enlarge the apertures of the SFC. With this upgrade, the statistics per unit time of the neutron lifetime experiment increased by a factor of 2.8, while maintaining a signal-to-noise ratio of 250-400 comparable to the previous one. Consequently, the time required to reach a precision of 1 s in the neutron lifetime experiment was reduced from 590 to 170 days, which is a significant reduction in time. This improvement in statistic will also contribute to the reduction of systematic uncertainties, such as background evaluation, fostering further advancements in the neutron lifetime experiments at J-PARC., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures

We have been developing a high-pressure xenon gas time projection chamber (TPC) to search for neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{136}$Xe. The unique feature of this TPC is in the detection part of ionization electrons, called ELCC. ELCC is composed of multiple units, and one unit covers 48.5 $\mathrm{cm}^2$. A 180 L size prototype detector with 12 units, 672 channels, of ELCC was constructed and operated with 7.6 bar natural xenon gas to evaluate the performance of the detector at around the Q value of $^{136}$Xe $0\nu\beta\beta$. The obtained FWHM energy resolution is (0.73 $\pm$ 0.11) % at 1836 keV. This corresponds to (0.60 $\pm$ 0.03) % to (0.70 $\pm$ 0.21) % of energy resolution at the Q value of $^{136}Xe$ $0\nu\beta\beta$. This result shows the scalability of the AXEL detector with ELCC while maintaining high energy resolution. Factors determining the energy resolution were quantitatively evaluated and the result indicates further improvement is feasible. Reconstructed track images show distinctive structures at the endpoint of electron tracks, which will be an important feature to distinguish $0\nu\beta\beta$ signals from gamma-ray backgrounds., Comment: 33 pages, 24 figures, preprint accepted by PTEP

The North Polar Spur (NPS) is a giant structure that is clearly visible in both radio and X-ray all-sky maps. We analyzed broadband radio observations covering a range between 22 MHz and 70 GHz to systematically analyze the thermal/non-thermal emissions associated with the NPS. We demonstrate that the radio emission of the NPS comprises synchrotron, free-free, and dust emission; however, synchrotron emissions dominate over other emissions, especially at high galactic-latitudes. Moreover, the synchrotron spectra exhibit a power-law behavior with $N(\gamma)\propto\gamma^{-s}$ ($s\simeq1.8-2.4$) up to a few GHz moderated by a turnover at $\nu_{\rm brk} \simeq 1$ GHz, above which the spectral index $s$ decrease by one. Assuming that the turnover is due to the electrons cooled by synchrotron radiation before escaping (or advecting) from the emission region, the magnetic field strength can be estimated to be $B\sim 8 \rm\mu G$ if the NPS is a distant structure that is near the Galactic Center (GC). However, an unreasonably strong $B\sim 114\rm\mu G$ is required if the NPS is near the local supernova remnant (SNR). The corresponding non-thermal energy stored in the NPS is $E_{\rm n/th}\simeq 4.4\times 10^{55}$ erg in the GC scenario, whereas $E_{\rm n/th}\simeq 4.1\times 10^{52}$ erg is difficult to explain with a single local SNR. We also estimated the gamma-ray emission associated with the NPS through inverse Comptonization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which peaks at 100 - 1000 keV with a flux of $\nu F_{\nu}\sim 10^{-9}$ $\rm erg\,cm^{-2}s^{-1}sr^{-1}$ in the GC model, and may be a good candidate for detection by future X-ray/gamma-ray observatories., Comment: Accepted for ApJ, 12 pages, 5 figures

Machine learning models need to be continually updated or corrected to ensure that the prediction accuracy remains consistently high. In this study, we consider scenarios where developers should be careful to change the prediction results by the model correction, such as when the model is part of a complex system or software. In such scenarios, the developers want to control the specification of the corrections. To achieve this, the developers need to understand which subpopulations of the inputs get inaccurate predictions by the model. Therefore, we propose correction rule mining to acquire a comprehensive list of rules that describe inaccurate subpopulations and how to correct them. We also develop an efficient correction rule mining algorithm that is a combination of frequent itemset mining and a unique pruning technique for correction rules. We observed that the proposed algorithm found various rules which help to collect data insufficiently learned, directly correct model outputs, and analyze concept drift.

This study numerically investigated the friction of viscoelastic objects with grooves. A 3D viscoelastic block with grooves on a rigid substrate is slowly pushed from the lateral side under uniform pressure on the top surface. The local friction force at the interface between the block and the substrate obeys Amontons' law. Numerical results obtained using the finite element method reveal that the static friction coefficient decreases with increasing groove width and depth. The propagation of the precursor slip is observed before bulk sliding. Furthermore, bulk sliding occurs when the area of slow precursor slip reaches a critical value, which decreases with increasing groove size. A theoretical analysis based on a simplified model reveals that the static friction coefficient is related to the critical area of the precursor, which is determined by the instability of the precursor. A scaling law for the critical area is theoretically predicted, and it indicates that the decrease in the effective viscosity due to the formation of the grooves leads to a decrease in the static friction coefficient. The ratio of H$\alpha$ intensity to 1.4 GHz radio continuum intensity in the North Polar Spur (NPS) is measured to be $\lesssim 50$, two orders of magnitude smaller than the values of $\sim 10^4$ observed in the typical shell-type old supernova remnants, Cygnus Loop and S147. The extremely low H$\alpha$-to-radio intensity ratio favours the Galactic-Centre explosion model for NPS, which postulates a giant shock wave at a distance of several kilo parsecs in the hot and low-density Galactic halo with low hydrogen recombination rate, over the local supernova(e) remnant model., Comment: Accepted for MNRAS, 8 pages, 8 figures

Asmussen and Lehtomaa [Distinguishing log-concavity from heavy tails. Risks 5(10), 2017] introduced an interesting function $g$ which is able to distinguish between log-convex and log-concave tail behaviour of distributions, and proposed a randomized estimator for $g$. In this paper, we show that $g$ can also be seen as a tool to detect gamma distributions or distributions with gamma tail. We construct a more efficient estimator $\hat{g}_n$ based on $U$-statistics, propose several estimators of the (asymptotic) variance of $\hat{g}_n$, and study their performance by simulations. Finally, the methods are applied to several data sets of daily precipitation.
