1. Similarity and symmetry measures based on fuzzy descriptors of image objects` composition

Abstract

The paper describes a method for measuring the similarity and symmetry of an image annotated with bounding boxes indicating image objects. The latter representation became popular recently due to the rapid development of fast and efficient deep-learning-based object-detection methods. The proposed approach allows for comparing sets of bounding boxes to estimate the degree of similarity of their underlying images. It is based on the fuzzy approach that uses the fuzzy mutual position (FMP) matrix to describe spatial composition and relations between bounding boxes within an image. A method of computing the similarity of two images described by their FMP matrices is proposed and the algorithm of its computation. It outputs the single scalar value describing the degree of content-based image similarity. By modifying the method`s parameters, instead of similarity, the reflectional symmetry of object composition may also be measured. The proposed approach allows for measuring differences in objects` composition of various intensities. It is also invariant to translation and scaling and - in case of symmetry detection - position and orientation of the symmetry axis. A couple of examples illustrate the method., Comment: 10 pages

Abstract

Network traffic classification models, an essential part of intrusion detection systems, need to be as simple as possible due to the high speed of network transmission. One of the fastest approaches is based on decision trees, where the classification process requires a series of tests, resulting in a class assignment. In the network traffic classification process, these tests are performed on extracted traffic features. The classification computational efficiency grows when the number of features and their tests in the decision tree decreases. This paper investigates the relationship between the number of features used to construct the decision-tree-based intrusion detection model and the classification quality. This work deals with a reference dataset that includes IoT/IIoT network traffic. A feature selection process based on the aggregated rank of features computed as the weighted average of rankings obtained using multiple (in this case, six) classifier-based feature selectors is proposed. It results in a ranking of 32 features sorted by importance and usefulness in the classification process. In the outcome of this part of the study, it turns out that acceptable classification results for the smallest number of best features are achieved for the eight most important features at −95.3% accuracy. In the second part of these experiments, the dependence of the classification speed and accuracy on the number of most important features taken from this ranking is analyzed. In this investigation, optimal times are also obtained for eight or fewer number of the most important features, e.g., the trained decision tree needs 0.95 s to classify nearly 7.6 million samples containing eight network traffic features. The conducted experiments prove that a subset of just a few carefully selected features is sufficient to obtain reasonably high classification accuracy and computational efficiency. Abstract

Image captioning aims at generating meaningful verbal descriptions of a digital image. This domain is rapidly growing due to the enormous increase in available computational resources. The most advanced methods are, however, resource-demanding. In our paper, we return to the encoder–decoder deep-learning model and investigate how replacing its components with newer equivalents improves overall effectiveness. The primary motivation of our study is to obtain the highest possible level of improvement of classic methods, which are applicable in less computational environments where most advanced models are too heavy to be efficiently applied. We investigate image feature extractors, recurrent neural networks, word embedding models, and word generation layers and discuss how each component influences the captioning model's overall performance. Our experiments are performed on the MS COCO 2014 dataset. As a result of our research, replacing components improves the quality of generating image captions.
