Studies of Jewish "Americanization" have largely focused on earlier periods of immigration and emphasized the democratic nature of dress in the United States. In contrast, this study analyzes the decades at mid-century when Jews began visibly to enter the American mainstream and argues for an increased appreciation of male sartorial distinction as cultural capital in Jewish social mobility and self-assertion within a stratified American social system. In the decades after the Second World War, a commercialized form of Ivy League style became one of the leading modes of middle class American masculine self-fashioning. Many Jewish students, professors, and young professionals found in Ivy style a statement suited to their aspirations of educational, social, and economic advancement in the face of traditional antisemitic discrimination. The Jewish history of Ivy style reveals the ambiguities and ironies of this process of class-specific Americanization, given the disproportionate role of Jewish tailors and businessmen in the creation and curation of an American style so closely linked to power. Drawing on memoirs, contemporary images, and vintage clothing, this article examines the connection between Ivy style as sartorial habitus and Jewish social and cultural integration in and through higher education. This qualitative study examined how race and class shaped the college choice process and collegiate experiences of Black undergraduates attending Ivy League Institutions. Findings revealed that although social class did not play a significant role in participants’ college choice process, robust financial aid packaging significantly impacted their decision to attend a highly selective university. Racial identity was largely viewed by participants as a vehicle to admit more Black Immigrant students than Black Native students in order to achieve institutional diversity/affirmative action goals. Prevalent racialized incidents and institutional racism shaped participants’ collegiate experiences. The findings of this study are expected to have implications for minority recruitment, college choice, access and equity, as well as higher education diversity initiatives.

With the college admissions process under the microscope after allegations of bribery, fraud, and other malfeasance, it is even more imperative for public libraries to play a role in helping students reach their fullest potential. From collection development to programming to community partnerships, the public library has a critical role to play in the college admissions process, especially in low-income communities. In a society where many people feel that they are at a disadvantage applying to elite schools already, the public library can offer a path forward and a path of hope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research examines public dialogue about the decision of the Ivy League schools to restrict full-contact tackling during football practice. Data from Twitter and online news comments were subjected to interpretive analysis, which revealed that participants framed the policy as evidence of social progress while others critiqued its effectiveness and positioned it as evidence of the decline of masculinity and American identity. The results indicate that public discourse around health and safety issues within sport are more complex and varied than those in the media. Additionally, sport organizations should anticipate resistance to policies and strategically craft communication to address these barriers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a member of the Ivy League and as one of the nine Colonial Colleges, Dartmouth College maintains a strong local, regional, and national presence. This is evident is in Dartmouth's cultural landscape, particularly the College's most important and enduring icon, the historically and architecturally significant Dartmouth Hall. "Old Dartmouth," as it is also known, is the site of much of the College's social and cultural history, and it remains a domineering force in Dartmouth's landscape and institutional memory. The strong emotional response to rebuild Dartmouth Hall, following fires in 1904 and 1935, prompted an intense sequence in the College's history to "preserve" an important landmark that continues to influence its contemporary landscape and place identity. This paper examines the significance of Old Dartmouth to the College. Through a landscape history and analysis, I submit that Dartmouth Hall signifies much more than being an old, Colonial-style academic building; rather, it is an artifact symbolizing class, power, and exclusivity. I argue that, against the backdrop of a tumultuous period in New England's social history affecting the region's socioeconomic dynamics, the reconstruction of Dartmouth Hall was the catalyst to the construction of a new identity for Dartmouth College as an elite institution as it transitioned from a remote, liberal arts college to a member of the powerful Ivy League. In the 1999-2000 women's collegiate golf season the proportion of women golfers competing for Ivy League schools that were of Asian descent and played in at least six tournaments was .22. Over the next eight collegiate golf seasons this proportion fell as low as .08 and was .14 for the 2007-2008 season. Then, over the next five collegiate seasons, through 2012-2013, the proportion of players Asian in Ivy League women's golf who competed in at least six tournaments per season increased to .18, .23, .44, .68, and .56. The marked increase in Asian representation in women's Ivy League golf was much greater than the increase in Asians in women's college golf in general and in men's Ivy League golf. We suggest Asian parents with academically and athletically gifted daughters have turned with their daughters to golf over the past decade or longer to increase the daughter's chances of admission to selective universities in the US. This emphasis on golf may result from: 1. recognition that Asian women can compete successfully against generally taller Caucasian women given the success of Asian golfers on the LPGA tour since the late 1990's; 2. recognition that the close parental supervision of children in the Asian family, particularly the girls, and the emphasis on discipline and practice can help build a strong golf game. Short game practice in particular may have a potentially large payoff and does not lead to physical breakdown. Variable effects regression models show that the skill (rankings) advantage of Asians over non-Asians has actually increased in women's golf in the Ivy League in recent years; thus, Asian representation in women's Ivy golf should continue to increase.
