Examined the influence of family structure on substance abuse among 2,057 Ontario adolescent students. Focused on influence of various family structures on five substance use and delinquency outcomes. Close-ended questions may encourage more accurate reporting of heavy alcohol use than open-ended questions. A telephone survey identified 649 participants who reported drinking five or more drinks on at least one occasion during the past year. Both types of questions were asked, specific to the frequency of heavy drinking episodes in the past year. Close-ended responses reported higher frequencies 31.9% of the time. Of 44 individuals not answering both questions, most did not answer the open ended question, and 75.7% of them reported drinking heavily at least 12 times in the past year., ABSTRACT.
