The article investigates the vegetation of solution cups in the limestone of the Burren region of Co. Clare. Solution cups are hollows in limestone which have been produced by corrosive weathering. They vary in size, and can be distinguished as lapiés, and pot holes. Solution cups are locally distributed in the British Isles. In England, solution cups can be found in the Yorkshire limestones, especially on Hutton Roof and Ingleborough, through they are relatively poorly developed further to the south-east, above Malham. The general vegetation of solution cups is a limestone grassland community with abundant Dryas octopetala, though along the west coast a community of Carex distans is very prominent than Dryas.

The article reports on Agrostis setacea, a hemicryptophyte and commonly found in the British Isles. The plant's root system is fibrous and developed in the upper 10 centimeters of the soil. The leaf is xeromorphic, with a narrow, V-shaped lamina. The flowers are hermaphrodite and wind pollinated. Flowering is unaffected by the conditions in the different heaths wherein the species is found. There was no record on physiological data. Agrostis setacea's geographical and altitudinal distribution, habitat and phenology are also discussed.

The article examines the problem of extending the R/Q terminology to other techniques of multivariate analyses of biological data. The R/Q terminology originated in psychological factor analysis until it found its way into biological work. The problems associated with R/Q terminology is it is being applied to factor analysis, and to no other technique, and there is no confusion between the terms "person" or "individual" and "variable" or "attribute." When the terminology is extended into biological work, difficulties may arise if it is to be extended to techniques other than factor analysis, appropriate conventions must be agreed upon for doing this, and in some data matrices there is no a priori reason for regarding one dimension as representing "individuals" and the other "attributes."
