To review the longitudinal trajectories – and the factors influencing their development – of mental health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Systematic review methods were employed. Searches of six databases used keywords and MeSH terms related to children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, mental health problems, and longitudinal research. After the removal of duplicates, reviewers independently screened records for inclusion, extracted data (outcomes and influencing factors), and evaluated the risk of bias. Findings were tabulated and synthesized using graphs and a narrative. Searches identified 94,662 unique records, from which 49 publications were included. The median publication year was 2015. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were the most commonly included population in retrieved studies. In almost 50% of studies, trajectories of mental health problems changed by < 10% between the first and last time point. Despite multiple studies reporting longitudinal trajectories of mental health problems, greater conceptual clarity and consideration of the measures included in research is needed, along with the inclusion of a more diverse range of populations of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Purpose: Autologous full-thickness skin grafting (FTSG) has the potential to become an option in abdominal wall repair. An understanding of tissue remodelling in the extracellular matrix (ECM) is crucial as this interplay determines such parameters as tissue strength and flexibility. This cross-sectional preclinical laboratory study in mice provides information on the distribution of collagen types and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the ECM of FTSGs in the intraperitoneal and onlay positions compared with internal controls. The aim was to evaluate morphologic changes after tissue remodelling and repair in FTSGs applied in the two positions and to detect any adverse host response. Methods: ECM components were evaluated as follows: qualitative examination of collagen bundle thickness using Picrosirius Red staining (collagen types I, III and IV); and evaluation of collagen types IV and V, as well as MMPs 1, 8 and 9 using immunohistochemical staining. Full-thickness grafts transplanted between female twin mice were examined as this best mimics autologous transplantation. Results: At 8 weeks, FTSGs in the intraperitoneal position did not show any noticeable differences in morphologic appearance to those in the onlay position. Both intraperitoneal and onlay FTSGs showed increases in the amount of thick collagen bundles compared to internal controls. No correlation was seen between distribution of MMPs 1, 8 or 9 and distribution of collagen types I, III, IV or V. Conclusion: This preclinical study shows that FTSGs in both intraperitoneal and onlay positions are possible application site options and, by extension, promising application site options for abdominal wall reinforcement in hernia surgery. Samples of active chimneys, chimney flanges and massive sulfides from the Daiyon-Yonaguni Knoll hydrothermal field are composed of major barite and minor stibnite and orpiment. Barite is inferred to precipitate from focused-discharge fluids composed of >40% hydrothermal end-member fluid at T = 100-240 degrees C, whereas the stibnite and orpiment are later and lower temperature precipitates. The hydrothermal fluids from this field were subject of sub-seafloor boiling and phase separation and, consequently, are brine-rich depleted in volatile and enriched in non-volatile elements. Boiling and phase separation exerted major control on the rare earth elements (REE) partitioning in the vent fluids: high-chlorinity high-temperature fluids were enriched in light REE and low -chlorinity low-temperature fluids were enriched in heavy REE. Y/Ho molar ratio and Ce anomaly of the vent fluids suggest that the seawater has not completely reacted with the basement rocks and has not equilibrated with them. The trace element concentrations in the hydrothermal deposits suggest a complex interplay among hydrothermal, hydrogenetic and microbial processes. Sulfur isotope composition of the sulfides suggests that the sulfide S is a mixture of both basement rock and seawater S with a higher proportion of the basement rock S. The sulfate dissolved in the fluids was subjected to reduction during a slow mixing of hydrothermal fluid and seawater within the chimney walls of the Tiger and Abyss vents and this resulted in a heavy S-isotope compo-sition of the vent fluid sulfate. Lead isotope composition of the hydrothermal deposits indicates mixing re-lationships suggesting that Pb and potentially other metals with similar geochemical behavior were derived from two or three sources. The Pb isotopes in the hydrothermal deposits imply that an enriched source, either sedi-ments or extended continental lithosphere, and a depleted source, potentially back-arc mafic volcanics, are present in the area o

Purpose:Even though various types of scaffolds have been used lately as a complement to microfracture, the exact mechanism of reported cartilage repair improvement when using scaffolds is still unclear. In this study, an effort has been made to identify the specific effects that scaffolds may have on the cells of reparation when using this technique.Methods:A 3‑D model in vitro, representing microfracture and containing both chondrocytes and bone marrow‑derived cells in different experimental conditions was made, and the cells were cultured for eight weeks. Subse‑quently, the constructs containing our 3‑D model were removed from the cell culture medium, fixed in paraffin and analyzed with immunohistochemistry.Results:Bone marrow – derived cells migrated to the upper compartment of the construct through a perforated nylon membrane containing both enzymatically digested‑ and non‑digested particulated cartilage. The histological sections were stained with hematoxylin, eosin, S‑100, SOX‑9, Gomori, and procollagen type I and II. When minced cartilage wasn’t pretreated with collagenase, exclusively bone‑derived cells have created new extracellular matrix as showed by the histological analysis.Conclusions:In this model of microfracture, bone‑derived cells but not chondrocytes have shown to have an active role in new cartilage formation without predigestion with collagenase. Moreover, it seems that the addition of a chitosan‑based scaffold may lead to the improvement of a new cartilage matrix synthesis and integration. This effect hasn’t been seen without the use of scaffold or when a fibrin‑ or a collagen‑based scaffold have been used.

Children with impairments are known to experience more restricted participation than other children. It also appears that low levels of participation are related to a higher prevalence of mental health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). The purpose of this conceptual paper is to describe and define the constructs mental health problems, mental health, and participation to ensure that future research investigating participation as a means to mental health in children and adolescents with NDD is founded on conceptual clarity. We first discuss the difference between two aspects of mental health problems, namely mental disorder and mental illness. This discussion serves to highlight three areas of conceptual difficulty and their consequences for understanding the mental health of children with NDD that we then consider in the article: (1) how to define mental health problems, (2) how to define and assess mental health problems and mental health, i.e., wellbeing as separate constructs, and (3) how to describe the relationship between participation and wellbeing. We then discuss the implications of our propositions for measurement and the use of participation interventions as a means to enhance mental health (defined as wellbeing). Conclusions: Mental disorders include both diagnoses related to impairments in the developmental period, i.e., NDD and diagnoses related to mental illness. These two types of mental disorders must be separated. Children with NDD, just like other people, may exhibit aspects of both mental health problems and wellbeing simultaneously. Measures of wellbeing defined as a continuum from flourishing to languishing for children with NDD need to be designed and evaluated. Wellbeing can lead to further participation and act to protect from mental health problems.

Here we review published studies on the abundance and diversity of terrestrial rock-hosted life, the environments it inhabits, the evolution of its metabolisms, and its fossil biomarkers to provide guidance in the search for life on Mars. Key findings are (1) much terrestrial deep subsurface metabolic activity relies on abiotic energy-yielding fluxes and in situ abiotic and biotic recycling of metabolic waste products rather than on buried organic products of photosynthesis; (2) subsurface microbial cell concentrations are highest at interfaces with pronounced chemical redox gradients or permeability variations and do not correlate with bulk host rock organic carbon; (3) metabolic pathways for chemolithoautotrophic microorganisms evolved earlier in Earth's history than those of surface-dwelling phototrophic microorganisms; (4) the emergence of the former occurred at a time when Mars was habitable, whereas the emergence of the latter occurred at a time when the martian surface was not continually habitable; (5) the terrestrial rock record has biomarkers of subsurface life at least back hundreds of millions of years and likely to 3.45 Ga with several examples of excellent preservation in rock types that are quite different from those preserving the photosphere-supported biosphere. These findings suggest that rock-hosted life would have been more likely to emerge and be preserved in a martian context. Consequently, we outline a Mars exploration strategy that targets subsurface life and scales spatially, focusing initially on identifying rocks with evidence for groundwater flow and low-temperature mineralization, then identifying redox and permeability interfaces preserved within rock outcrops, and finally focusing on finding minerals associated with redox reactions and associated traces of carbon and diagnostic chemical and isotopic biosignatures. Ultramafic rocks are hypothesized to support a subseafloor hydrogen-driven biosphere because of extensive production of bioavailable energy sources like H-2 or CH4 from fluid-rock interactions. Hence, the apparent lack of microbial remains in subseafloor ultramafic rocks, in contrast to their frequent observation in subseafloor basalts, is somewhat of a paradox. Here we report fossilized microbial remains in aragonite veins in ultramafic rocks from the 15 degrees 20N Fracture Zone area on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 209. The microbial remains consist of filamentous structures associated with biofilms. The young age (<1 Myr) and absence of diagenesis result in fossilized microbial communities with a pristine composition characterized by carbonaceous matter (CM) and the enrichment in trace elements such as Ni, Co, Mo and Mn. Our study confirms the presence of the hypothesized deep subseafloor biosphere hosted in ultramafic rocks. We further show that host rock composition may influence the microbial elemental composition, which is recorded during the fossilization.
