The objective of this study was to present a comparative analysis of the antimicrobial activity of methanolic leaf extracts from seven Juniperus L. species, together with a tentative analysis of their total flavonoid and o-dihydroxyphenolic acids content. The chemical analyses were performed by colorimetric methods and the antimicrobial activity was assessed via broth microdilution. The studied extracts showed total content of o-dihydroxyphenols in the range of 26 to 34 µg of caffeic acid equivalent/mg DE and total flavonoid content of 13 to 24 µg of quercetin equivalent/mg DE. The sensitivity of Gram-positive bacteria to the studied extracts differed significantly with the following order of activity: J. sabina var. balkanensis > J. communis ‘Laxa’ > J. formosana > J. pinchotii > J. ashei > J. excelsa ≈ J. sibirica. Weak activity was observed for all extracts against Gram-negative bacteria and Candida strains. The analysis of the MBC/MIC ratio showed that the extracts exhibited bactericidal effect against Gram-negative bacteria (MBC/MIC≤4), while bactericidal or bacteriostatic action (MBC/MIC>4) was determined towards Gram-positive bacteria. Moreover, these extracts showed fungicidal (MFC/MIC≤4) or fungistatic effect (MFC/MIC>4). Best antibacterial activity was registered for the J. sabina var. balkanensis leaf extract. The multivariate data analyses were carried out by SIMCA 16 (v16.0.2) software. The hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis, based on phytochemical and antimicrobial data, classified the studied juniper species into four groups: 1. J. ashei; 2. J. excelsa, J. sibirica; 3. J. sabina var. balkanensis, J. communis Laxa, J. formosana; 4. J. pinchotii.

Plaque-induced gingivitis is one of the most widely distributed periodontal disorder during childhood. The control of the pathogenic potential of the plaque is associated with oral hygiene status at individual, group, and population levels. We hypothesize that regular application of complex oral hygiene-prophylaxis could beneficially modulate salivary amino acids profile in children with different stage of plaque-induced gingivitis. Therefore, we aimed to study the salivary amino acids’ profile in relation to certain clinical indicators and environmental variables for plaque-induced gingivitis in children.

Background: The rate of male infertility has increased in the last decades. One factor that may improve sperm quality and testosterone is fish consumption, which supplies the organism with essential nutrients. Aim: To determine evidence of a relationship between the frequency of fish consumption and sperm quality. Methods: Seventy‐four healthy men, aged 25–45 years, were involved in this observational study. Semen quality was evaluated by spermogram analyses and testosterone was measured in blood. Volunteers were classified as low, moderate, and high fish consumption groups according to the replies indicated in a questionnaire they had to fill out. Results: The moderate fish consumption group showed better semen quality with all spermogram parameters in the reference range and the low fish consumption group manifested the worst semen quality with sperm morphology below the reference range. The low fish consumption group had lower testosterone levels (3.6 ± 0.9 vs. 4.3 ± 1.5; p = 0.04), decreased nonprogressive spermatozoa (11.9 ± 6.2 vs. 15.8 ± 8.2; p = 0.04), and lower semen volume (3.1 ± 2.0 vs. 3.6 ± 1.3; p = 0.06) compared to the moderate fish consumption group. Positive associations were detected between the frequency of fish consumption, the semen volume, and nonprogressive spermatozoa, respectively. Conclusions: Fish consumption at moderate level such as once a week leads to improvement in sperm quality and testosterone levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new private initiative in Bulgaria has recently succeeded in collecting previously unknown photographs on the assimilation of the Turkish and Pomak ethnic groups during Bulgarian socialism (1945–1989). This closes a historical gap. Until now, these photos documenting the long years of renaming, expulsion, and resettlement have been stored in private or public archives in either Bulgaria or Turkey, while others are scattered all over the world. This posed a serious problem to the research, understanding, and the transfer of the memory of what happened. The first open digital archive of its kind is supposed to change this. Featured Application: In this study, we evaluated the relationship among the carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT), the redox balance parameters of plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), malondialdehyde (MDA), and HO-1, and the expression of oxidative stress-related NF-kB, Nrf2, and HO-1 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells as biomarkers in metabolic syndrome (MetS). Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a pathologic condition characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and hyperlipidaemia. The components of MetS and the associated cardiovascular risks may disrupt the vascular endothelial function and the structure of the vascular wall, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis and vascular diseases. In this study we evaluated the relationship between the carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT), the redox balance parameters of plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), malondialdehyde (MDA), and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), and the expression of oxidative stress-related nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and HO-1 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in MetS. Significantly higher CIMT was established in MetS patients aged ≥ 55 years as compared with the control group (0.96 ± 0.29 vs. 0.74 ± 0.21, p < 0.05). Expression was higher in MetS patients aged < 55 years (83% for NF-kB, p < 0.05; 251% for Nrf2, p < 0.05, and 337% for HO-1, p < 0.05) in comparison to the control group. Similarly, expression was higher in CIMT < 0.90 mm than the control group by 80% for NF-kB, p < 0.01; 260% for Nrf2, p < 0.05, and 303% for HO-1, p < 0.05. In contrast, gene expression was under-regulated in the subgroups of MetS patients aged ≥ 55 years and MetS patients with CIMT ≥ 0.90 mm. Significantly higher plasma levels for MDA, ADMA, and HO-1 were established in the age < 55 and age ≥ 55 MetS subgroups and the CIMT < 0.90 mm and CIMT ≥ 0.90 mm subgroups. In forests, a significant proportion of the carbon fixed by trees during photosynthesis is transported belowground along the conducting phloem, so variations in phloem anatomy can lead to variations in transport capacity. Phloem conductance at tree level (Ktree) is also affected by tree height. Both the phloem anatomy and the tree size change during ontogeny, and also differ under different environmental conditions. The goal of our work was to identify the main drivers of variation in Ktree in Scots pine trees growing in natural boreal forests. We conducted a phloem anatomical study and calculated Ktree in trees of three age groups growing in different climatic conditions along a latitudinal gradient from south to north. We found that Ktree was maintained at the same level in actively growing pine trees (25–80-years-old) but increased in old-aged trees (180–190-years-old), possibly reflecting the shift in source-sink relationships of aboveground and belowground parts of trees. Trees of the same age group growing in different climatic conditions demonstrated similar values of Ktree due to coordinated changes in the phloem anatomy and the tree height. In general, the negative influence of tree height on Ktree is offset by the positive influence of phloem width (or trunk diameter) and sieve cell diameter. The exception was young trees growing in the transition zone of the northern taiga subzone to the tundra, where Ktree was the highest in its age group and even exceeded Ktree of middle-aged trees. Innovative types of dressings should manifest biodegradability and non-immunogenicity and prevent dehydration. The mentioned technological features are demonstrated by polymeric, nonwoven propolis dressings, which exhibit regenerative properties, produced with the implementation of the electrospinning method. These features are highly needed in the course of burn wound healing. To analyze the dynamics of the changes in content of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), such as heparan sulfates and hyaluronan, a well-known protocol of burn wound healing (the Hoekstra model) was used. Burn wounds were subsequently treated with nonwoven dressings containing either 5% wt or 10% wt propolis. Control groups were treated with either a saline salt solution or nonwoven dressings without propolis. Statistical differences between groups were determined by a multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc tests. Evaluation of the effectiveness of nonwoven dressings containing 5% wt and 10% wt propolis in healing burn wounds, based on the dynamics and concentration of GAGs, revealed apitherapeutic positive effects on injured tissue healing. Featured Application: Plasma uric acid, lactate, and osmolality parameters can be used for screening and monitoring of colorectal cancer. Data about uric acid and lactate raise questions about the molecular mechanisms of their action in cancer development and the need for revisiting their importance, not only as metabolites but also as signaling molecules. The action of circulating plasma lactate may be different from those locally produced in tumor microenvironments. A complex evaluation of colorectal cancer (CRC) in relation to screening, diagnosis, stage determination, prognosis, and treatment requires valuable biomarkers. The aim of this study was to measure selected biomarkers—uric acid (UA), lactate, Na+, Cl−, and osmolality—in CRC patients and to assess their diagnostic value to distinguish between CRC and healthy controls. Plasma lactate (2.21 ± 0.11 vs. 2.88 ± 0.19, p < 0.01), Na+ (130.79 ± 0.42 vs. 133.23 ± 0.25, p < 0.001), Cl− (102.59 ± 0.45 vs. 103.94 ± 0.23, p < 0.01), and osmolality (266.44 ± 0.86 vs. 271.72 ± 0.62, p < 0.001) were found to be significantly lower in CRC patients as compared to the healthy controls group. Among them, with satisfactory diagnostic potential, were plasma Na+ concentrations and osmolality (AUCNa+ = 0.752, p < 0.0001; AUCosmolality = 0.757, p < 0.05), respectively. UA concentrations were detected at higher concentrations in CRC patients (333.67 ± 13.05 vs. 295.88 ± 13.78, p < 0.05). The results of this study contribute to the elucidation of molecular mechanisms of CRC pathogenesis and the role of studied metabolic parameters in this process. The wound-healing effect of St. John's Wort (SJW) is mainly attributed to hyperforin (HP), but its low stability restricts its topical administration. This study investigates how "free" HP-rich SJW extract (incorporated into a bigel; B/SJW) and extract "protected" by nanostructured lipid carriers (also included in a biphasic semisolid; B/NLC-SJW) affect tissue regeneration in a rat skin excision wound model. Wound diameter, histological changes, and tissue gene expression levels of fibronectin (Fn), matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP8), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were employed to quantify the healing progress. A significant wound size reduction was achieved after applying both extract-containing semisolids, but after a 21-day application period, the smallest wound size was observed in the B/NLC-SJW-treated animals. However, the inflammatory response was affected more favorably by the bigel containing the "free" SJW extract, as evidenced by histological studies. Moreover, after the application of B/SJW, the expression of Fn, MMP8, and TNF-α was significantly higher than in the positive control. In conclusion, both bigel formulations exhibited beneficial effects on wound healing in rat skin, but B/SJW affected skin restoration processes in a comprehensive and more efficient way. Endothelial dysfunction is one of the major factors in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and its molecular mechanisms are not completely understood. The present study aimed to examine the connection between nuclear factor2-related factor2 (Nrf2), nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), and plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in people with MetS. Participants in the study were as follows: with MetS (n = 30) and without MetS (Control) (n = 14). Expression of Nrf2, NF-kB, and HO-1 was measured in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Plasma ADMA was determined using the ELISA technique and MDA via the thiobarbituric acid method. Our study showed that mRNA of NF-kB, Nrf2, and HO-1 levels in PBMCs in the MetS group were significantly higher than in the controls by 53%, 130%, and 185% (p < 0.05), respectively. Similarly, elevated levels of MDA (by 78%, p < 0.001) and ADMA (by 18.7%, p < 0.001) were established in the MetS group. Our findings show the importance of transcription factor Nrf2, playing an integral role in the protection of the endothelium, and of NF-κB, a transcription factor mediating the inflammatory response in MetS. Knowledge of complex cellular–molecular mechanisms would allow the use of biomarkers such as Nrf2, NF-kB, HO-1, and ADMA for the assessment of endothelial dysfunction in clinical practice.
