Abstract

A large-volume Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is the main tracking and particle identification (PID) detector of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. PID in the TPC is performed via specific energy-loss measurements (dE/dx), which are derived from the average pulse-height distribution of ionization generated by charged-particle tracks traversing the TPC volume. During Runs 1 and 2, until 2018, the gas amplification stage was based on multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC). Signals from the MWPC show characteristic long negative tails after an initial positive peak due to the long ion drift times in the MWPC amplification region. This so-called ion tail can lead to a significant amplitude loss in subsequently measured signals, especially in the high-multiplicity environment of high-energy Pb-Pb collisions, which results in a degradation of the dE/dx resolution. A detailed study of the signal shapes measured with the ALICE TPC with the Ne-CO2 (90-10) and Ar-CO2 (90-10) gas mixtures is presented, and the results are compared with three-dimensional Garfield simulations. The impact of the ion tail on the PID performance is studied employing the ALICE simulation framework and the feasibility of an offline correction procedure to account for the ion tail is demonstrated., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), requires high precision displacement measurement between widely spaced pairs of freely floating test masses. We describe a proposed design for the optical telescopes that form an essential part of the laser heterodyne interferometry measurement system and discuss how the design and implementation will address the unique challenges of this specialized application.

Abstract

We conducted an international study of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) diagnosis among a large group of physicians and compared their diagnostic performance to a panel of IPF experts. A total of 1141 respiratory physicians and 34 IPF experts participated. Participants evaluated 60 cases of interstitial lung disease (ILD) without interdisciplinary consultation. Diagnostic agreement was measured using the weighted kappa coefficient (κw). Prognostic discrimination between IPF and other ILDs was used to validate diagnostic accuracy for first-choice diagnoses of IPF and were compared using the C-index. A total of 404 physicians completed the study. Agreement for IPF diagnosis was higher among expert physicians (κw=0.65, IQR 0.53–0.72, p20 years of experience (C-index=0.72, IQR 0.0–0.73, p=0.229) and non-university hospital physicians with more than 20 years of experience, attending weekly MDT meetings (C-index=0.72, IQR 0.70–0.72, p=0.052), did not differ significantly (p=0.229 and p=0.052 respectively) from the expert panel (C-index=0.74 IQR 0.72–0.75). Experienced respiratory physicians at university-based institutions diagnose IPF with similar prognostic accuracy to IPF experts. Abstract

Background: Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease with pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations. In such pathologic conditions, increased oxidative stress and rearrangement of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) may occur. Objective: This study evaluated association of oxidative stress and lipoprotein subclasses in severe forms of pulmonary and pulmonary plus extrapulmonary sarcoidosis. Abstract

It is shown that the magnetoresistive properties of n–Si/SiO2/Ni, nanostructures containing nanogranular nickel rods in a SiO2 layer’s vertical pores substantially differ from the similar properties in the earlier studied nanogranular Ni films electrodeposited onto the n–Si plates. From the point of view of the electrophysical properties, the nanostructures studied are analogous to a system of two Schottky Si/Ni diodes, which are connected to each other. The magnetoresistance of such structures has been studied in the temperature range from 2 to 300 K and the magnetic field range of up to 8 Tl. It is established that at temperatures of 17–27 K the structures possess a positive magnetoresistive effect, whose value depends on the transverse voltage applied to the structure and increases with a decrease in the longitudinal (along the rods) current intensity. At a current of 100 nA, the relative magnetoresistance in the field of 8 Tl increases from 500 to 35000% by an increase in the transverse voltage from 0 to –2 V. The observed magnetoresistive effect is associated with the influence of the magnetic field on the processes of impact ionization of impurities resulting in an avalanche breakdown of the Ni/Si Schottky barrier. Thus, the possibility of controlling the magnetoresistive effect in n–Si/SiO2/Ni template structures by applying an additional (transverse) electric field to the nanostructure between the silicon substrate (as the third electrode) and nickel rods is proven.

Abstract

Sarcoidosis is a complex systemic inflammatory disease of unknown aetiology that is influenced by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. To identify further susceptibility loci for sarcoidosis, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted in 381 patients and 392 control individuals based on Affymetrix 100k GeneChip data. The top 25 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected for validation in an independent study panel (1,582 patients versus 1,783 controls). Variant rs10484410 on chromosome 6p12.1 was significantly associated, with a Bonferroni-corrected p-value of 2.90 × 10⁻² in the validation sample and a nominal p-value of 2.64 × 10⁻⁴ in the GWAS. Extensive fine mapping of the novel locus narrowed down the signal to a region comprising the genes BAG2, C6orf65, KIAA1586, ZNF451 and RAB23. Verification of the sarcoidosis-associated nonsynonymous SNP rs1040461 in a further independent case-control sample and quantitative mRNA expression studies point to the RAB23 gene as the most likely risk factor. RAB23 is proposed to be involved in antibacterial defence processes and regulation of the sonic hedgehog signalling pathway. The identified association of the 6p12.1 locus with sarcoidosis implicates this locus as a further susceptibility factor and RAB23 as a potential signalling component that may open up new perspectives in the pathophysiology of sarcoidosis.

Abstract

For a set of 10 androgen steroids and estradiol (E2), the kinetic feasibility of conformation flexibility of the cyclic moieties was studied under the constraint of maintaining the B/C trans and C/D trans ring fusion of the natural and biologically active enantiomer. To this end, the conformational energy surface was quantified using the semiempirical quantum chemical AM1 model. The computational analysis included the location of Conformational transition states with associated barriers, and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations to characterize the trajectories of the rotations and the relationships of the transition states to neighbouring chair and twist conformations. Conformational transformations were observed only for the A and B rings except for E2, which yielded corresponding transformations for the B and C ring, respectively. Interestingly, the rotation barriers starting from the lowest-energy conformations differed substantially, ranging from below 10 kJ/mol for four compounds to 18–20 kJ/mol for another five compounds. Moreover, chair and twist conformations were found only for steroids with higher saturated rings, while semichairs and semitwists occurred for steroids with aromatic or partly unsaturated rings, and B-ring transformations lead to kinetically unstable conformations with very flat energy minima. Although the rotation barriers for most of the transitions are clearly above the thermal energy (kT) at room temperature when evaluated relative to the lowest-energy conformations, the associated energy demands are well below the gain in energy from ligand-receptor binding. The results suggest that conformer interconversion are feasible from both a thermodynamic and kinetic perspective, and support previous investigations in which conformer distributions rather than lowest energy confor-mations were considered when assessing hormone receptor topography and the biological activity of ligands.
