Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. We consider the statistical properties of primary sequences of two-letter HP copolymers (H for hydrophobic and P for polar) designed to have water soluble globular conformations with H monomers shielded from water inside the shell of P monomers. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Although high doses of ionizing radiation have long been linked to circulatory disease, evidence for an association at lower exposures remains controversial. However, recent analyses suggest excess relative risks at occupational exposure levels. OBJECTIVES: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize information on circulatory disease risks associated with moderate- and low-level whole-body ionizing radiation exposures. METHODS: We conducted PubMed/ISI Thomson searches of peer-reviewed papers published since 1990 using the terms radiation AND heart AND disease, OR radiation AND stroke, OR radiation AND circulatory AND disease. Radiation exposures had to be whole-body, with a cumulative mean dose of < 0.5 Sv, or at a low dose rate (< 10 mSv/day). We estimated population risks of circulatory disease from low-level radiation exposure using excess relative risk estimates from this meta-analysis and current mortality rates for nine major developed countries. RESULTS: Estimated excess population risks for all circulatory diseases combined ranged from 2.5%/Sv [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8, 4.2] for France to 8.5%/Sv (95% CI: 4.0, 13.0) for Russia. CONCLUSIONS: Our review supports an association between circulatory disease mortality and low and moderate doses of ionizing radiation. Our analysis was limited by heterogeneity among studies (particularly for noncardiac end points), the possibility of uncontrolled confounding in some occupational groups by lifestyle factors, and higher dose groups (> 0.5 Sv) generally driving the observed trends. If confirmed, our findings suggest that overall radiation-related mortality is about twice that currently estimated based on estimates for cancer end points alone (which range from 4.2% to 5.6%/Sv for these populations).

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and perform a meta-analysis of radiation associated risks of cardiovascular disease in all groups exposed to radiation with individual radiation dose estimates. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Excess relative risk per unit dose (Gy), estimated by restricted maximum likelihood methods. DATA SOURCES: PubMed and Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science Core collection databases. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES: Databases were searched on 6 October 2022, with no limits on date of publication or language. Animal studies and studies without an abstract were excluded. RESULTS: The meta-analysis yielded 93 relevant studies. Relative risk per Gy increased for all cardiovascular disease (excess relative risk per Gy of 0.11 (95% confidence interval 0.08 to 0.14)) and for the four major subtypes of cardiovascular disease (ischaemic heart disease, other heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, all other cardiovascular disease). However, interstudy heterogeneity was noted (P<0.05 for all endpoints except for other heart disease), possibly resulting from interstudy variation in unmeasured confounders or effect modifiers, which is markedly reduced if attention is restricted to higher quality studies or those at moderate doses (<0.5 Gy) or low dose rates (<5 mGy/h). For ischaemic heart disease and all cardiovascular disease, risks were larger per unit dose for lower dose (inverse dose effect) and for fractionated exposures (inverse dose fractionation effect). Population based excess absolute risks are estimated for a number of national populations (Canada, England and Wales, France, Germany, Japan, USA) and range from 2.33% per Gy (95% confidence interval 1.69% to 2.98%) for England and Wales to 3.66% per Gy (2.65% to 4.68%) for Germany, largely reflecting the underlying rates of cardiovascular disease mortality in these populations. Abstract

Experimental data on the passing of signals from navigation satellites of the L1 range through forest plantations with an anisotropic horizontal tree arrangement structure are presented. A feature of the studied environment is an irregular distance between trees in rows and a constant distance between rows. Signals were recorded by an antenna located inside the forest at heights of 0.5 and 10 meters. Based on the results of processing the amplitude-time dependences of the recorded signal by means of fast Fourier transform, qualitative differences were revealed depending on the orientation of the probe signal path in the forest stand.

The search for short-lived particles is usually the final stage in the chain of event reconstruction and precedes event selection when operating in online mode or physics analysis when operating in offline mode. Most often such short-lived particles are neutral and their search and reconstruction is carried out using their daughter charged particles resulting from their decay. The use of the missing mass method makes it possible to find and analyze also decays of charged short-lived particles, when one of the daughter particles is neutral and is not registered in the detector system. One of the most known examples of such decays is the decay Σ− → nπ−. In this paper, we discuss in detail the missing mass method, which was implemented as part of the KF Particle Finder package for the search and analysis of short-lived particles, and describe the use of the method in the STAR experiment (BNL, USA). The method was used to search for pion (π± → μ±ν) and kaon (K± → μ±ν and K± → π±π0) decays online on the HLT farm in the express production chain. An important feature of the express production chain in the STAR experiment is that it allows one to start calibration, production, and analysis of the data immediately after receiving them. Here, the particular features and results of the real-time application of the method within the express processing of data obtained in the BES-II program at a beam energy of 3.85 GeV/n when working with a fixed target are presented and discussed.

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the current state of the Geometry Database for the BM@N experiment of the NICA project. The main goal of the database is to provide a central storage of the BM@N geometries, convenient tools for managing its geometry modules, various software assembling versions of the BM@N setup as a combination of modules and additional files providing support for a set of versions. Both the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the Application Programming Interface (API) have been developed.

Abstract

The results of a study of some ways to improve spectroscopy characteristics of the CdZnTe quasi-hemispherical detectors when working in high gamma radiation fluxes are presented. It was shown that the use of IR illumination with a wavelength of 1050 nm or 1200 nm or at slight warm-up of the detector to +30°C … +40°C can significantly improve spectroscopy performance of the CdZnTe detectors of size 3.5 mm × 3.5 mm × 1.75 mm when operating in a tested gamma-radiation field with a dose rate up to 590 mGy/h.
