3. Surface modified composite nanofibers for the removal of indigo carmine dye from polluted water

Abstract

Surface coated magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) with 3-mercaptopropionic acid were immobilized on amidoximated polyacrilonitrile (APAN) nanofibers using electrospinning followed by crosslinking. The prepared composite nanofibers were characterized with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Fourier Transform Infrared analysis (FTIR). The composite nanofiber was evaluated for the removal of indigo carmine dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of contact time, initial dye concentration, solution pH and adsorption equilibrium isotherms were studied. The adsorption of indigo carmine was found to be greatly affected by solution pH. The maximum loading capacity was determined to be 154.5 mg g(-1) at pH = 5. The experimental kinetic data were fitted well using a pseudo-first order model. The adsorption isotherm studies showed that the adsorption of indigo carmine fits well with the Langmuir model. The reuse of the composite nanofiber was also investigated in which more than 90% of indigo carmine was recovered in 5 min. 4. Heat–induced changes in soil properties: fires as cause for remobilization of chemical elements

Abstract

Exposure of soil constituents to elevated temperatures during wildfire can significantly affect their properties and consequently, increase the mobility of the bound contaminants. To estimate the potential of wildfires to influence metal remobilization from the burned soil due to the changes in cation exchange capacity (CEC) after organic matter combustion and mineral alteration and degradation, changes in soil properties after exposure to different temperatures was investigated. This was accomplished through analysis of geochemical, mineralogical and surface physicochemical properties of a soil sample exposed to different temperatures in a laboratory. Heating the soil sample at 200 °C, 500 °C and 850 °C resulted in an increase in pH (from 5.9 to 12.3), decrease in cation exchange capacity (from 47.2 to 7.3 cmol+kg−1) and changes in the specific surface area (observed only at 500 °C), that are associated with structural modifications of clay minerals and ferromagnetic minerals. Extraction analysis showed the increase in the concentration of almost all analysed elements (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn and Zn) in soil eluates. The observed increase, following high– temperature heating (500 °C and 850 °C), was as much as 15 times higher (e.g., Al), compared to the native soil sample (25 °C). This strongly indicates that wildfire can act as a trigger for remobilization of heavy metals.

Abstract

Introduction: Psoriatic arthritis is estimated to develop in 2% of patients with psoriasis per year and can result in significant morbidity. Early diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are imperative to prevent irreversible arthritic joint damage. Dermatologists play a key role in identifying patients who are at risk for or with early signs of psoriatic arthritis. Subclinical enthesopathy may be a risk factor for psoriatic arthritis or an early sign of the disease and can be detected using ultrasound., Methods: In this systematic review, we determined the prevalence of ultrasound-diagnosed enthesitis in psoriasis patients, as well as their risk of subsequent progression to psoriatic arthritis., Results: We determined that the detection of enthesitis on ultrasound was associated with higher risk of future psoriatic arthritis. Systemic therapy was associated with improvement in enthesitis findings in patients with psoriasis but not in those with chronic structural damage or established psoriatic arthritis. Additionally, one study showed that ustekinumab treatment resulted in a significantly lower rate of psoriatic arthritis development., Conclusions: These studies support the value of early detection and treatment in the prevention of progression to psoriatic arthritis, as well as the use of ultrasound for screening for risk factors in psoriasis patients. Future studies are needed to further evaluate when preventative therapy can be useful among patients with psoriasis with risk factors for psoriatic arthritis., (© 2023 the International Society of Dermatology.)
