The structural and microstructural responses of a model metal–organic framework material, Ni(3-methyl-4,4′-bipyridine)[Ni(CN)4] (Ni-BpyMe or PICNIC-21), to CO2 adsorption and desorption are reported for in situ small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements under different gas pressure conditions for two technologically important cases. These conditions are single or dual gas flow (CO2 with N2, CH4 or H2 at sub-critical CO2 partial pressures and ambient temperatures) and supercritical CO2 (with static pressures and temperatures adjusted to explore the gas, liquid and supercritical fluid regimes on the CO2 phase diagram). The experimental results are compared with density functional theory calculations that seek to predict where CO2 and other gas molecules are accommodated within the sorbent structure as a function of gas pressure conditions, and hence the degree of swelling and contraction in the associated structure spacings and void spaces. These predictions illustrate the insights that can be gained concerning how such sorbents can be designed or modified to optimize the desired gas sorption properties relevant to enhanced gas recovery or to addressing carbon dioxide reduction through carbon mitigation, or even direct air capture of CO2.

Flower-like polyacrylonitrile (PAN) particles have shown promising performance for numerous applications, including sensors, catalysis, and energy storage. However, the detailed formation process of these unique structures during polymerization has not been investigated. Here, we elucidate the formation process of flower-like PAN particles through a series of in situ and ex situ experiments. We have the following key findings. First, lamellar petals within the flower-like particles were predominantly orthorhombic PAN crystals. Second, branching of the lamellae during the particle formation arose from PAN's fast nucleation and growth on pre-existing PAN crystals, which was driven by the poor solubility of PAN in the reaction solvent. Third, the particles were formed to maintain a constant center-to-center distance during the reaction. The separation distance was attributed to strong electrostatic repulsion, which resulted in the final particles' spherical shape and uniform size. Lastly, we employed the understanding of the formation mechanism to tune the PAN particles' morphology using several experimental parameters including incorporating comonomers, changing temperature, adding nucleation seeds, and adjusting the monomer concentration. These findings provide important insights into the bottom-up design of advanced nanostructured PAN-based materials and controlled polymer nanostructure self-assemblies.

Although significant progress has been made in the self-assembly of nanostructures, present successes heavily rely on precision in building block design, composition, and pair interactions. These requirements fundamentally limit our ability to synthesize macroscopic materials where the likelihood of impurity inclusion escalates and, more importantly, to access molecular-to-nanoscopic-to-microscopic-to-macroscopic hierarchies, since the types and compositions of building blocks vary at each stage. Inspired by biological blends and high-entropy alloys, we hypothesize that diversifying the blend's composition can overcome these limitations. Increasing the number of components increases mixing entropy, leading to the dispersion of different components and, as a result, enhances interphase miscibility, weakens the dependence on specific pair interactions, and enables long-range cooperativity. This hypothesis is validated in complex blends containing small molecules, block copolymer-based supramolecules, and nanoparticles/colloidal particles. Hierarchically structured composites can be obtained with formulation flexibility in the filler selection and blend composition. It is worth noting that, by adding small molecules, we can solve the size constraint that plagues traditional block copolymer/nanoparticle blends. Detailed characterization and simulation further confirm that each component is distributed to locally mediate unfavorable interactions, cooperatively mitigate composition fluctuations, and retain structural fidelity. Furthermore, the blends have sufficient mobility to access tunable microstructures without compromising the order of the nanostructure. Besides establishing a kinetically viable pathway to release current constraints in the composite design and to navigate uncertainties during structure formation over multiple length scales, the present study demonstrates that entropy-driven behaviors can be realized in systems beyond high-entropy alloys despite inherent differences between metal alloys and organic/inorganic hybrids.

When compressed by the shrinking alveolar surface area during exhalation, films of pulmonary surfactant in situ reduce surface tension to levels at which surfactant monolayers collapse from the surface in vitro. Vesicles of pulmonary surfactant added below these monolayers slow collapse. X-ray scattering here determined the structural changes induced by the added vesicles. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction on monolayers of extracted calf surfactant detected an ordered phase. Mixtures of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol, but not the phospholipid alone, mimic that structure. At concentrations that stabilize the monolayers, vesicles in the subphase had no effect on the unit cell, and X-ray reflection showed that the film remained monomolecular. The added vesicles, however, produced a concentration-dependent increase in the diffracted intensity. These results suggest that the enhanced resistance to collapse results from enlargement by the additional material of the ordered phase.

Aerogels are of interest for their ability to uniformly incorporate nanoscale features into macroscopic assemblies, which enabled applications that require low density, high surface area, and/or bicontinuous networks. The structure of the nanoporous network is intrinsically linked to the macroscopic properties of aerogels. Hence, control of this structure is of paramount importance. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is used here to monitor nanoparticle aggregation in situ in Cu2(OH)3Br aerogels formed via epoxide-assisted gelation. Anomalous anisotropic aggregation is observed in the absence of templating agents and is attributed to the molecular structure of the inorganic nanoparticles themselves. This is a fundamental departure from the models currently used to describe traditional inorganic sol-gel chemistry where nanoparticles are believed to undergo isotropic diffusion- and/or kinetically limited aggregation. Time-resolved SAXS indicates that Cu2(OH)3Br nanoparticles nucleate rapidly from solution to form unbranched chain-like aggregates rather than branched mass-fractal aggregates. Sizes of primary particles (∼1.5 nm) and the chain-like structure of their aggregates are independent of particle concentration (gel density), while rates of particle aggregation, gelation time, and aggregate size are strongly dependent upon particle concentration, which implies that the chemistry of particle formation and the physics of particle aggregation are independent processes. Because the conditions necessary for creating anisotropic structures are not unique to Cu2(OH)3Br, these results could provide insight into the structure and gelation mechanisms of other inorganic aerogels.

Achieving reversible and tunable assembly of silica nanoparticles at liquid-liquid interfaces is vital for a wide range of scientific and technological applications including sustainable subsurface energy applications, catalysis, drug delivery and material synthesis. In this study, we report the mechanisms controlling the assembly of silica nanoparticles (dia. 50 nm and 100 nm) at water-hydrocarbons interfaces using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant with concentrations ranging from 0.001 – 0.1 wt % using operando ultrasmall/small-angle X-ray scattering, cryogenic scanning electron microscopy imaging and classical molecular dynamic simulations. The results show that the adsorption and assembly of silica nanoparticles at water-heptane and water-toluene interfaces can be tuned by controlling the concentrations of SDS. Silica nanoparticles are found to: (a) dominate the interfaces in the absence of interfacial SDS molecules, (b) coexist with SDS at the interface at low surfactant concentration of 0.001 wt% and (c) migrate toward the aqueous phase at a high SDS concentration of 0.1 wt%. Energetic analyses suggest that the van der Waals and electrostatic interactions between silica nanoparticles and SDS surfactants increase with SDS concentration. However, the favorable van der waals and electrostatic interactions between the silica nanoparticles and toluene or heptane decrease with increasing SDS concentration. As a result, the silica nanoparticles migrate away from the water-hydrocarbon interface and towards bulk water at higher SDS concentrations. These calibrated investigations reveal the mechanistic basis for tuning silica nanoparticle assembly at complex interfaces.

Gram-negative bacteria are protected from their environment by an outer membrane that is primarily composed of lipopolysaccharides (LPSs). Under stress, pathogenic serotypes of Salmonella enterica remodel their LPSs through the PhoPQ two-component regulatory system that increases resistance to both conventional antibiotics and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Acquired resistance to AMPs is contrary to the established narrative that AMPs circumvent bacterial resistance by targeting the general chemical properties of membrane lipids. However, the specific mechanisms underlying AMP resistance remain elusive. Here we report a 2-fold increase in bacteriostatic concentrations of human AMP LL-37 for S. enterica with modified LPSs. LPSs with and without chemical modifications were isolated and investigated by Langmuir films coupled with grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) and specular X-ray reflectivity (XR). The initial interactions between LL-37 and LPS bilayers were probed using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. These simulations suggest that initial association is nonspecific to the type of LPS and governed by hydrogen bonding to the LPS outer carbohydrates. GIXD experiments indicate that the interactions of the peptide with monolayers reduce the number of crystalline domains but greatly increase the typical domain size in both LPS isoforms. Electron densities derived from XR experiments corroborate the bacteriostatic values found in vitro and indicate that peptide intercalation is reduced by LPS modification. We hypothesize that defects at the liquid-ordered boundary facilitate LL-37 intercalation into the outer membrane, whereas PhoPQ-mediated LPS modification protects against this process by having innately increased crystallinity. Since induced ordering has been observed with other AMPs and drugs, LPS modification may represent a general mechanism by which Gram-negative bacteria protect against host innate immunity.

Fibrous aggregates of β-lactoglobulin display superior mechanical and interfacial properties compared to the native protein. These properties directly link to the protein morphology and structure. When incorporated into food matrices, during processing protein fibrils are exposed to pH shifts and high temperature conditions, which accelerate their degradation. In the present study, neutralized β-lactoglobulin fibrils were heated at 100 °C and 121 °C for various times to assess their degradation. Fibril morphology, structure, and viscosity in solution were examined by microscopy, scattering, spectroscopy, and rheology. Atomic force microscopy showed the contour length of the protein fibrils decreased gradually with heating at 100 oC and 121 °C, with greater decreases at 121 °C. Increased fibril diameters (∼15–25 nm) were observed at 121 °C for 5–15 min heating and were disrupted upon further heating. Small-angle x-ray scattering indicated an increase in fibril radius with heating at pH 7 followed by a decrease at prolonged heating, whereas fibril length decreased continuously with heating. Thioflavin T fluorescence, circular dichroism and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the conversion of β-sheet to random coils as fibrils were degraded during thermal treatment at pH 7. Surface hydrophobicity of fibrils decreased with increase in heating temperature and time, coinciding with an increase in the content of non-aggregated proteins. Viscosity of fibril solutions increased when fibrils were heated at 100 °C, whereas at 121 °C their viscosity first increased and then decreased. These findings imply heating at 100 °C and 121 °C facilitates degradation and depolymerisation of β-lactoglobulin fibrils with aggregation as an intermediate step.

Hypothesis Understanding the stability and rheological behavior of suspensions composed of anisotropic particles is challenging due to the complex interplay of hydrodynamic and colloidal forces. We propose that orientationally-dependent interactions resulting from the anisotropic nature of non-spherical sub-units strongly influences shear-induced particle aggregation/fragmentation and suspension rheological behavior. Experiments Wide-, small-, and ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering experiments were used to simultaneously monitor changes in size and fractal dimensions of boehmite aggregates from 6 to 10,000 A as the sample was recirculated through an in-situ capillary rheometer. The latter also provided simultaneous suspension viscosity data. Computational fluid dynamics modeling of the apparatus provided a more rigorous analysis of the fluid flow. Findings Shear-induced aggregation/fragmentation was correlated with a complicated balance between hydrodynamic and colloidal forces. Multi-scale fractal aggregates formed in solution but the largest could be fragmented by shear. Orientationally-dependent interactions lead to a relatively large experimental suspension viscosity when the hydrodynamic force was small compared to colloidal forces. This manifests even at low boehmite mass fractions.

Films of pulmonary surfactant cause the low tensions. The interfacial structures required for the low surface tensions remain uncertain. These studies used X-ray scattering to determine the initial structure of pulmonary surfactant monolayers, and to establish how vesicles of pulmonary surfactant enhance the ability of those initial monolayers to sustain low tensions. The initial monolayers contained ordered structures that differ from the crystalline forms widely speculated to occur in alveolar films. The added vesicles had no effect on the local structure of the initial monolayer, but substantially increased the area of the ordered regions. This structural change reasonably explains the functional improvement.

This work reports a harmonic-rejection scheme based on the combination of Si(111) monochromator and Si(220) harmonic-rejection crystal optics. This approach is of importance to a wide range of X-ray applications in all three major branches of modern X-ray science (scattering, spectroscopy, imaging) based at major facilities, and especially relevant to the capabilities offered by the new diffraction-limited storage rings. It was demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that, when used with a synchrotron undulator source over a broad range of X-ray energies of interest, the harmonic-rejection crystals transmit the incident harmonic X-rays on the order of 10−6. Considering the flux ratio of fundamental and harmonic X-rays in the incident beam, this scheme achieves a total flux ratio of harmonic radiation to fundamental radiation on the order of 10−10. The spatial coherence of the undulator beam is preserved in the transmitted fundamental radiation while the harmonic radiation is suppressed, making this scheme suitable not only for current third-generation synchrotron sources but also for the new diffraction-limited storage rings where coherence preservation is an even higher priority. Compared with conventional harmonic-rejection mirrors, where coherence is poorly preserved and harmonic rejection is less effective, this scheme has the added advantage of lower cost and footprint. This approach has been successfully utilized at the ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering instrument at the Advanced Photon Source for scattering, imaging and coherent X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy experiments. With minor modification, the harmonic rejection can be improved by a further five orders of magnitude, enabling even more performance capabilities.

Synchrotron-based X-ray scattering measurements of phase-separated surfactant monolayers at the air-water interface provide molecular-level structural information about the packing and ordering of film components. In this work, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) and X-ray reflectivity (XR) measurements were used to collect crystallographic structural information for binary mixed monolayers of arachidic acid (AA, C19H39COOH) with perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PA, C13F27COOH), a system that has previously been investigated using a variety of thermodynamic and micron-scale structural characterization methods. GIXD measurements at surface pressures of π = 5, 15, and 30 mN/m indicated that AA in pure and mixed films forms a rectangular lattice at π = 5 and 15 mN/m but a hexagonal lattice at π = 30 mN/m. PA formed hexagonal lattices under all conditions, with films being highly ordered and crystalline (as determined by Bragg peak width) at even the lowest surface pressures investigated. Phase separation occurred for all mixed monolayer film compositions and surface pressures, manifesting as diffraction peaks characteristic of the individual components appearing at different in-plane scattering vector qxy. For both pure and mixed films, the molecular tilt angle of the AA hydrocarbon chain toward the nearest-neighbor was substantial at low pressures but decreased with increasing pressure. The PA fluorocarbon chain showed negligible molecular tilt under all conditions, and was oriented normal to the subphase surface regardless of surface pressure or the presence of AA in the films. In all cases, the two components in the mixed film behaved entirely independently of film composition, which is exactly the expected result for a fully phase-separated, immiscible system. XR measurements of film thickness at the air-water interface supported these results; overall film thickness approached the calculated ideal surfactant tail lengths with increasing surface pressure, indicating nearly normal oriented surfactants. The overall surfactant packing and crystallographic features of the mixed monolayers are discussed in terms of the lipophobic nature of the perfluorinated surfactant as well as in context of thermodynamic miscibility and domain structure formation reported elsewhere in the literature for these mixed monolayer systems.

Following many years of evolutionary development, first at the National Synchrotron Light Source, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and then at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory, the APS ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) facility has been transformed by several new developments. These comprise a conversion to higher-order crystal optics and higher X-ray energies as the standard operating mode, rapid fly scan measurements also as a standard operational mode, automated contiguous pinhole small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements at intermediate scattering vectors, and associated rapid wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements for X-ray diffraction without disturbing the sample geometry. With each mode using the USAXS incident beam optics upstream of the sample, USAXS/SAXS/WAXS measurements can now be made within 5 min, allowing in situ and operando measurement capabilities with great flexibility under a wide range of sample conditions. These developments are described, together with examples of their application to investigate materials phenomena of technological importance. Developments of two novel USAXS applications, USAXS-based X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and USAXS imaging, are also briefly reviewed.

Hydrophobic interactions govern specificity for natural antimicrobial peptides. No such relationship has been established for synthetic peptoids that mimic antimicrobial peptides. Peptoid macrocycles synthesized with five different aromatic groups are investigated by minimum inhibitory and hemolytic concentration assays, epifluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray reflectivity. Peptoid hydrophobicity is determined using high performance liquid chromatography. Disruption of bacterial but not eukaryotic lipid membranes is demonstrated on the solid supported lipid bilayers and Langmuir monolayers. X-ray reflectivity studies demonstrate that intercalation of peptoids with zwitterionic or negatively charged lipid membranes is found to be regulated by hydrophobicity. Critical levels of peptoid selectivity are demonstrated and found to be modulated by their hydrophobic groups. It is suggested that peptoids may follow different optimization schemes as compared to their natural analogues.

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) reveal materials dynamics using coherent scattering, with XPCS permitting the investigation of dynamics in a more diverse array of materials than DLS. Heterogeneous dynamics occur in many material systems. The authors' recent work has shown how classic tools employed in the DLS analysis of heterogeneous dynamics can be extended to XPCS, revealing additional information that conventional Kohlrausch exponential fitting obscures. The present work describes the software implementation of inverse transform analysis of XPCS data. This software, called CONTIN XPCS, is an extension of traditional CONTIN analysis and accommodates the various dynamics encountered in equilibrium XPCS measurements.

The spatial heterogeneity of pore structure and mineral composition at μm to mm scales in mm to cm-sized shale samples complicates the laboratory measurements of porosity & pore size distribution and consequently reservoir quality evaluation. Traditional fluid invasion characterization methods typically take hours to days to get data and can only test relatively small samples (usually 2.54 cm diameter core plugs and mm-sized rock chips). The X-ray scattering techniques at the Advanced Photon Source of the Argonne National Laboratory have the capability to non-destructively determine the pore structure and mineral composition of mm × mm area in a short time of seconds and to hold several to hundreds of mm2 sized sample to conduct large area heterogeneity analysis in the short duration of hours. With the use of ultra-small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), the porosity, surface area and pore size distribution of two Barnett Shale samples have been mapped out and the mineral compositions are determined qualitatively. Overall, the porosity and pore surface area of the Barnett Shale Sample A over a 36 cm2 area ranges from 1.70 % to 8.13 % and 8.87 m2/g to 40.2 m2/g respectively. The porosity and surface area of Sample B over a 24 cm2 area varies from 3.15 % to 11.7 % and 18.3 m2/g to 60.2 m2/g. In Sample A, the mineral composition shows a shift from carbonate-rich to siliciclastic-rich over a distance of several millimeters. For Sample B, the mineral compositions are mainly siliciclastic and do not show an obvious lithological change. The direct observations of high spatial heterogeneity of pore structure and mineral composition in shale illustrate the utility of integrated X-ray scattering techniques to provide valuable insights into shale studies and reservoir evaluation.

Novel approaches to harness earth abundant silicates as building blocks for carbon dioxide removal, capture, utilization, and storage are gaining increasing attention in the context of sustainable and low carbon energy and resource recovery. Advancing a calibrated understanding of these fluid-silicate interactions is essential for developing scalable processes. One of the challenges in developing predictive controls over these interactions is the compositional and morphological heterogeneity of naturally occurring, heterogeneous magnesium silicate minerals. To address this challenge, the synthesis of architected mesoporous crystalline magnesium silicate (Mg2SiO4) is proposed. While synthesis routes for producing amorphous mesoporous magnesium silicates have been developed via sol-gel methods, approaches to synthesize crystalline magnesium silicates with well-controlled pore size distributions have not been explored. The conventional approaches of converting matter that is amorphous to crystalline states at elevated temperatures results in a heterogeneous pore size distribution. To develop controls on pore size distribution, amorphous mesoporous magnesium silicates are coated with carbon. This approach retains the pore structure during the amorphous to crystalline transformations of Mg-silicates at elevated temperatures. The carbon coating is removed on heating. Magnesium silicate particles produced using this approach have highly ordered pores around 2.58 nm and a specific surface area of 124.25 m2/g. In this study, we report the chemical compositions, morphologies, phase transitions, and pore structures of the intermediate materials produced during the synthesis of crystalline mesoporous magnesium silicates. The synthesis routes discussed in this study can be applied translationally to produce metal silicates with ordered mesoporous structures.

The peptidomimetic approach has emerged as a powerful tool for overcoming the inherent limitations of natural antimicrobial peptides, where the therapeutic potential can be improved by increasing the selectivity and bioavailability. Restraining the conformational flexibility of a molecule may reduce the entropy loss upon its binding to the membrane. Experimental findings demonstrate that the cyclization of linear antimicrobial peptoids increases their bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus while maintaining high hemolytic concentrations. Surface X-ray scattering shows that macrocyclic peptoids intercalate into Langmuir monolayers of anionic lipids with greater efficacy than for their linear analogues. It is suggested that cyclization may increase peptoid activity by allowing the macrocycle to better penetrate the bacterial cell membrane.

In this paper, the composition, structure, morphology and kinetics of evolution during isothermal oxidation of Fe48Cr15Mo14Y2C15B6 metallic glass powder in the supercooled region are investigated by an integrated ex-situ and in-situ characterization and modelling approach. Raman and X-ray diffraction spectra established that oxidation yielded a hierarchical structure across decreasing length scales. At larger scale, Fe2O3 grows as a uniform shell over the powder core. This shell, at smaller scale, consists of multiple grains. Ultra-small angle X-ray scattering intensity acquired during isothermal oxidation of the powder over a wide Q-range delineated direct quantification of oxidation behavior. The hierarchical structure was employed to construct a scattering model that was fitted to the measured intensity distributions to estimate the thickness of the oxide shell. The relative gain in mass during oxidation, computed theoretically from this model, relatively underestimated that measured in practice by a thermogravimetric analyzer due to the distribution in sizes of the particles. Overall, this paper presents the first direct quantification of oxidation in metallic glass powder by ultra-small angle X-ray scattering. It establishes novel experimental environments that can potentially unfold new paradigms of research into a wide spectrum of interfacial reactions in powder materials at elevated temperatures.

Materials with the similar chemical structures but different morphological organization exhibit considerable differences in thermally induced chemo-morphological evolution. With recent advancements in multi-scale X-ray scattering measurements, it is now possible to non-invasively probe the structural and microstructural evolution of such materials. In this study, we investigate the chemo-morphological evolution of halloysite and contrast the results with those for kaolinite. Halloysite and kaolinite have tubular and planar morphologies, respectively. Both materials are alumino-silicates comprised of silica tetrahedral (T) and alumina octahedral (O) sheets organized in a TO structure. Four distinct stages in the structural evolution were identified. Stages I, II, III, and IV correspond to temperature ranges of 25–125 °C, 125–400 °C, 400–625 °C, and 625–875 °C. Major structural changes correspond to the removal of interlayer/adsorbed water in stage I, the existence of the halloysite structure without interlayer water in stage II, dehydroxylation of halloysite in stage III, and the conversion of ordered halloysite to amorphous meta-halloysite in stage IV. Additionally, heating halloysite up to 875 °C resulted in slight widening of the nanotubes, as the average pore radius increased from 6.4 nm to 6.6 nm. Heating also resulted in an increase of wall thickness of the nanotubes from ∼120 nm (25 °C) to 161 nm (875 °C). The increase in the halloysite nanotube diameter was attributed to the expansion of the structure and an increase in the surface roughness. The pore sizes in halloysite nanotubes were also confirmed using N2 adsorption-desorption and nano-X-ray computed tomography (nano-XCT) measurements. The interlayer basal spacing in halloysite changed from 9.8 A to 7.2 A after the removal of interlayer water. At temperatures in the range of 625–875 °C, heating halloysite causes a small widening of nanotube pores and a minor increase in the surface area. In contrast, the interlayer spacing in kaolinite collapses on heating which reduces the nanoscale porosity. These studies demonstrate the differences in the chemo-morphological evolution of alumino-silicates with tubular and planar morphologies.

Superwarfarins were developed following the emergence of warfarin resistance in rodents. Compared to warfarin, superwarfarins have much longer half-lives and stronger affinity to vitamin K epoxide reductase and therefore can cause death in warfarin-resistant rodents. By the mid-1970s, the superwarfarins brodifacoum and difenacoum were the most widely used rodenticides throughout the world. Unfortunately, increased use was accompanied by a rise in accidental poisonings, reaching >16,000 per year in the United States. Risk of exposure has become a concern since large quantities, up to hundreds of kilograms of rodent bait, are applied by aerial dispersion over regions with rodent infestations. Reports of intentional use of superwarfarins in civilian and military scenarios raise the specter of larger incidents or mass casualties. Unlike warfarin overdose, for which 1-2 days of treatment with vitamin K is effective, treatment of superwarfarin poisoning with vitamin K is limited by extremely high cost and can require daily treatment for a year or longer. Furthermore, superwarfarins have actions that are independent of their anticoagulant effects, including both vitamin K-dependent and -independent effects, which are not mitigated by vitamin K therapy. In this review, we summarize superwarfarin development, biology and pathophysiology, their threat as weapons, and possible therapeutic approaches.

The need for functional materials calls for increasing complexity in self-assembly systems. As a result, the ability to probe both local structure and heterogeneities, such as phase-coexistence and domain morphologies, has become increasingly important to controlling self-assembly processes, including those at liquid surfaces. The traditional X-ray scattering methods for liquid surfaces, such as specular reflectivity and grazing-incidence diffraction, are not well suited to spatially resolving lateral heterogeneities due to large illuminated footprint. A possible alternative approach is to use scanning transmission X-ray scattering to simultaneously probe local intermolecular structures and heterogeneous domain morphologies on liquid surfaces. To test the feasibility of this approach, transmission small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (TSAXS/TWAXS) studies of Langmuir films formed on water meniscus against a vertically immersed hydrophilic Si substrate were recently carried out. First-order diffraction rings were observed in TSAXS patterns from a monolayer of hexagonally packed gold nanoparticles and in TWAXS patterns from a monolayer of fluorinated fatty acids, both as a Langmuir monolayer on water meniscus and as a Langmuir–Blodgett monolayer on the substrate. The patterns taken at multiple spots have been analyzed to extract the shape of the meniscus surface and the ordered-monolayer coverage as a function of spot position. These results, together with continual improvement in the brightness and spot size of X-ray beams available at synchrotron facilities, support the possibility of using scanning-probe TSAXS/TWAXS to characterize heterogeneous structures at liquid surfaces.

Two amphiphilic calix[4]arenes bearing four dodecyl chains at the lower rim and two amino functions (vicinal and distal) at the para-phenolic positions have been synthesized. Surface-pressure versus molecular-area isotherms reveal that Langmuir monolayers of the two regioisomers show considerably distinct self-assembly behaviors at the air–water interface. Compression isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray near-total-reflection fluorescence, X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction reveal that the monolayers of the two diamino calix[4]arene derivatives and those of their structural analogues bearing four amino moieties in para positions exhibit significant differences in their binding properties towards HgCl2 despite the structural and functional similarity among the macrocycles.

Advancing a mechanistic understanding of the colloidal to solid-phase transformations of silica allows us to tune these meso-scale structures. In this study, we probe the structural transformations associated with the formation of mesoporous silica particles, SBA-15 using in-operando Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Grazing Incidence – Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (GI-SAXS). The chemical transformations associated with the hydrolysis and condensation of silica particles is investigated using Attenuated Total Reflection - Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) measurements. Fast polymerization of Si-O-Si species to form mesoporous silica is noted when SBA-15 is synthesized in the presence of nitrate salts, due to the “salting-in” effect or enhanced solubility of polymers. However, aging the silica particles resulted in plate-like morphologies in the absence of the nitrate salt and spherical morphologies in the presence of nitrate salt. Early onset of nucleation of silica particles in the presence of nitrate salts was captured using GI-SAXS measurements. These studies show that the rational basis for developing new synthesis routes for accelerated kinetics or specific meso-scale structures can be informed by detailed characterization of the evolution in chemistry and meso-scale structure of these materials.

The assembly and morphology of pores determine thermodynamic, flow and reactive properties of confined fluids. However, there is a limited understanding of how pore architectures dynamically develop in engineered and natural materials. To develop a calibrated understanding of fluid properties in confinement, the synthesis of architected materials has been proposed. The design of geo-architected materials has to be informed by the dynamic evolution of the morphology in response to thermal or chemical events. In this study, we probe thermally induced morphological evolution of spherical silica nanoparticles 220 ± 30 nm in diameter using in-operando Ultra-Small and Small Angle X-Ray Scattering measurements. The calcination experiments demonstrated that at temperatures up to 600 °C the pore radii remained in the range of 2.15 nm–2.35 nm and the particle diameters in the range of 220 ± 30 nm. Sintering these calcined silica nanoparticles to temperatures up to 1050 °C reduced the pore size from 2.2 ± 0.1 nm to ∼1.8–0.2 nm. These changes corresponded to the formation of siloxane (Si-O-Si) bridges resulting from dehydroxylation. The characteristic pore radius of sintered particles was also confirmed by N2 adsorption measurements. These studies represent the use of non-invasive dynamic characterization methods such as X-ray scattering to elucidate thermally induced morphological evolution in architected siliceous materials.

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), an extension of dynamic light scattering (DLS) in the X-ray regime, detects temporal intensity fluctuations of coherent speckles and provides scattering-vector-dependent sample dynamics at length scales smaller than DLS. The penetrating power of X-rays enables XPCS to probe the dynamics in a broad array of materials, including polymers, glasses and metal alloys, where attempts to describe the dynamics with a simple exponential fit usually fail. In these cases, the prevailing XPCS data analysis approach employs stretched or compressed exponential decay functions (Kohlrausch functions), which implicitly assume homogeneous dynamics. This paper proposes an alternative analysis scheme based upon inverse Laplace or Gaussian transformation for elucidating heterogeneous distributions of dynamic time scales in XPCS, an approach analogous to the CONTIN algorithm widely accepted in the analysis of DLS from polydisperse and multimodal systems. Using XPCS data measured from colloidal gels, it is demonstrated that the inverse transform approach reveals hidden multimodal dynamics in materials, unleashing the full potential of XPCS.

A method is proposed for imaging of scattering heterogeneities in continuous media on the basis of numerical modeling of forward and backward wave propagation. It is shown that the combination of a solution for backward propagation of waves and direct wave propagation allows us to visualize scattering heterogeneities. The results of numerical simulation are presented.

The experimental setup for ultrasonic controlled levitation in the air has been developed. Two phased arrays made of 91 ultrasonic radiators placed in front of each other are used. Arrays are focused in the region of particle levitation. The length of the focus area allows us to move the particles along it, controlling the standing waves through the phase difference of the two arrays.
