Crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) are wild canids found in practically all Brazilian states. They usually live and hunt in pairs, but can be found in small groups, which favors the transmission of diseases such as sarcoptic mange. This study aims to describe the epidemiological, parasitological and pathological findings of two fatal cases of sarcoptic mange in C. thous. Two wild canids were necropsied and cytological examination of skin and crust samples and histologic evaluation of various tissue samples were performed. Gross findings included poor body condition and extensive alopecia with thick skin crusts interspersed by intensely reddened alopecic areas. The cytological examination revealed numerous mites with short gnathosoma and rounded idiosoma that were transversally striated and presented triangular spines on the dorsal surface, terminal anus, and short and thick legs, characteristic of Sarcoptes scabiei. Histologic examination of the skin revealed numerous tunnels into and under the stratum corneum of the epidermis containing high amounts of S. scabiei. The mites were associated with marked acanthosis and hyperkeratosis, and mild superficial dermatitis. The findings reveal that sarcoptic mange is an important disease in wild canids. RESUMO: Cachorros-do-mato (Cerdocyon thous) são canídeos selvagens encontrados em praticamente todos os estados brasileiros. Geralmente vivem e caçam em pares, mas podem ser encontrados em pequenos grupos, o que favorece a transmissão de doenças, como a sarna sarcóptica. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever os achados epidemiológicos, parasitológicos e patológicos de dois casos fatais de sarna sarcóptica em cachorros-do-mato. Foram realizados necropsia de dois cachorros do mato, exame citológico de amostras de pele e crostas e exame histológico de amostras dos órgãos e tecidos. Na necropsia foram observados mau estado corporal, extensas áreas de alopecia, crostas cutâneas espessas que se desprendiam e eram intercaladas por áreas alopécicas intensamente eritematosas. No exame citológico foi observada grande quantidade de ácaros com gnatossoma curto e largo, idiossoma globoso, transversalmente estriado e com espinhos triangulares na superfície dorsal, ânus terminal e pernas curtas e grossas, característicos de Sarcoptes scabiei. Ao exame histológico da pele havia muitos túneis no estrato córneo da epiderme e abaixo dele, contendo grande quantidade de S. scabiei. Essas estruturas parasitárias estavam associadas a acantose e hiperqueratose acentuadas e dermatite superficial discreta. Os achados revelam a sarna sarcóptica como uma doença importante em cachorros do mato.

We assessed the effect of maternal feed restriction at different stages of gestation on growth and development of organs and small intestine of newborn goats. A total of 14 pregnant dams were randomly divided into one of the follow dietary treatments: Animals fed at 50% of maintenance requirement from 8-84 d of gestation and then fed at 100% maintenance requirement from day 85 of gestation to parturition (R-M, n = 6), and animals fed at 100% of maintenance requirement from 8-84 d of gestation and then fed at 50% maintenance requirement from day 85 of gestation to parturition (M-R, n = 8). At birth, newborns were slaughtered for collection of corporal components. No differences were observed among treatments for birth weight (P = 0.46). The weight of the complex reticulum-rumen-omasum tended to be heavier (P = 0.057) in the M-R group, when expressed per kg of body weight. The small intestine (P = 0.038) and total intestine (P = 0.038) were heavier in the offspring of the M-R group when expressed in kg of body weight. The M-R newborns had greater length of the small intestine (P = 0.043) and total intestine (P = 0.026). Maternal feed restriction did not influence the intestinal villi height (P = 0.406). However, newborn from R-M group had lower villus height:crypt depth ratio (P = 0.016), due to the tendency of the greater of crypt depth in these animals (P = 0.081). No differences among treatments were observed in mRNA expression of the MGAM and GLP-2R in the jejunum of the offspring (P > 0.12). Newborns of the M-R group tended to present greater mRNA abundance of the SLC5A1 (P = 0.091), SLC2A2 (P = 0.091), and OCLN (P = 0.061). In summary, restriction in the first half of gestation may be more detrimental to the performance and health of offspring throughout life due to increased impairment of intestinal development.

Neospora caninum is a protozoan that is considered an important agent of reproductive disorders in ruminants worldwide, and vertical transmission is the main form of infection and maintenance of neosporosis in herds. In goats, there have been no studies that have evaluated the transmission of N. caninum between successive generations. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate, through IFAT and PCR, the endogenous transplacental transmission of N. caninum in up to five generations of six families of dairy goats naturally infected by the parasite and whether it was possible for dairy goats to become free of infection over successive generations. Ninety-five serum samples from positive animals and 75 samples from negative animals were analyzed for N. caninum. Of the 95 samples analyzed, 93 contained anti-N. caninum antibodies (97.8 %). Titers of anti-N. caninum antibodies varied (increasing or decreasing) in the offspring; however, with an increase in the number of the goat generations, the offspring tended to have lower titers (p = 0.021) at the day of birth. Reproductive disorders such as abortions, stillbirth or fetal retention occurred at a rate of 10.4 % and were not influenced by the mother's titer of anti-N. caninum antibodies at the day of parturition or abortion. The results showed that infection by N. caninum persists throughout generations in congenitally infected goats.
