Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) is an indicator of phytoplankton biomass, which can be used to predict the presence of fish in the ocean. By predicting the Chl-a with sufficient time, this data can be used to better plan naval operations that combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing by increasing surveillance of the identified areas where the greatest fishing activity would take place. In this work, a new technique is proposed, based on the application of the discrete Fourier transform theory to develop multivariate spatial-temporal regression model, which considers physical and biogeochemical ocean variables to predict the presence of Chlorophyll-a around Galápagos Islands. This work considers open access data taken from the Copernicus space program, used in the European Union. La Clorofila-a es un indicador de la biomasa del fitoplancton, que puede ser utilizado para predecir la presencia de peces en el océano. Al predecir la Chl-a con suficiente tiempo, se puede utilizar en la planificación de las operaciones navales que combaten la pesca ilegal, no regulada y no reglamentada, por cuanto se identifica el lugar donde existirá mayor actividad pesquera, para incrementar su vigilancia. En este trabajo, proponemos una novel técnica basada en la aplicación de la teoría de la transformada discreta de Fourier, al modelo de regresión multivariable espacio-temporal desarrollado, que considera las variables físicas y biogeoquímicas del océano para la predicción de la clorofila-a, alrededor de las Islas Galápagos. Este trabajo considera datos de acceso libre del programa espacial Copérnico de la Unión Europea.

This is chapter 11 of the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard (SESS) report 2019 (https://sios-svalbard.org/SESS_Issue2). Off the Svalbard archipelago, in the eastern Fram Strait, at 1000 m depth along the continental slope, we observed temperature and salinity fluctuations that were more prominent between October and April. Data were acquired employing an oceanographic mooring deployed at 76°N 013°E from June 2014. Since then, the most noteworthy episode lasted more than 15 days in December 2016/January 2017 when the temperature rose from the typical value of -0.9°C to over 2°C. At the same time, bottom currents increased significantly, to 85 cm/s. Normally, these bottom currents flow around 10-15 cm/s. This region is characterized by the passage of Atlantic Water flowing northward in the upper layer, bringing relatively warm water to the Arctic Ocean. Below 800 m depth, the Norwegian Deep Sea Water, colder and less salty, also flows northward. Thanks to the scientific community that carries out measurements both in the ocean and in the atmosphere, we know that the Arctic is progressively warming up; we see this in the gradual melting of sea ice and ice on land. However, it is not clear how much of this warming is caused by human activities and what consequence it will have. In order to record and to study environmental changes and anomalies, we need time series. To provide robust climate data, such series must span decades. Achieving this goal requires great effort in terms of international collaborations, both economic and scientific.

European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2018, 8-13 April 2018, Vienna, Austria.-- 1 page, The INBIS (Interfan Bear Island and Storfjorden) Channel System is a rare example of deep-sea channel on andbeyond a glaciated continental margin. This channel system is located between the Bear Island and Kveithola-Storfjorden Trough Mouth Fans on the SW Barents Sea continental margin. A new compilation of bathymetry datashows that a series of 40 gullies, about 150-600 m wide and with incision depth of 10-60 m, incises the upperpart of the continental slope. These merge and increase in size downslope, transit into larger tributary channels andconverge into the INBIS Channel. The fringes of the INBIS tributary channels are buried below glacigenic debrisflows originating from the upper slope and shelf of the adjacent Trough-Mouth Fans during glacial maxima. Thissuggests that the INBIS Channel was not generated primarily by mass flows released at the mouth of the troughs.We infer that this gully-dominated part of the INBIS Channel System developed mainly in interglacial periodsfrom dense water cascading from the continental shelf and meltwaters. This gully-dominated part was relativelyprotected, by its location to the west of Bear Island, from recurrent glacigenic debris flows allowing meltwaters tocontinuously increase gullies (and channels) dimensions during interglacial periods

This paper aims to present a project convened by the University of Genoa and Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), in collaboration with Local Authorities, concerning the development of tools for beach management in the Riviera del Beigua (Liguria Region, Italy). The aim of the first step of the project is to assess the environmental state of resort beaches examining them interdisciplinary, through a data analysis based on a sound understanding of the components of the physical and the human system. The following step will be the treatment of the data, through the use of various instruments, which use a synthesis analysis, such as the traditional SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis, and the use of a set of environmental and socio-economic indicators. Finally, our ultimate target is to propose guidelines, which will supply an instrument to back up policies concerning beach planning and management.
