Abstract: Background: Combination vaccines reduce the number of pediatric injections but must be as safe, immunogenic, and effective as each of the individual vaccines given separately. Additionally, consistency in manufacturing lots is essential for WHO prequalification. This study aimed to establish the lot-to-lot consistency of a fully liquid, hexavalent diphtheria (D)-tetanus (T)-whole-cell pertussis (wP)-inactivated poliovirus (IPV)-hepatitis B (HB)-Haemophilus influenzae b (PRP-T) (DTwP-IPV-HB-PRP∼T) vaccine and to demonstrate non-inferiority to licensed DTwP-HB-PRP∼T and IPV vaccines. Methods: A Phase III, randomized, active-controlled, and open-label study was conducted at multiple centers across India. Healthy infants who had received a birth dose of oral poliovirus vaccine and hepatitis B vaccine received one of three lots of DTwP-IPV-HB-PRP∼T or separate DTwP-HB-PRP∼T and IPV vaccines at 6–8, 10–12, and 14–16 weeks of age. Oral rotavirus vaccine was co-administered at 6–8 weeks of age and 10–12/14–16 weeks of age. DTwP-IPV-HB-PRP∼T lot-to-lot consistency and non-inferiority (pooled DTwP-IPV-HB-PRP∼T) versus DTwP-HB-PRP∼T and IPV post-third dose were assessed using seroprotection rates (anti-D, anti-T, anti-HBs, anti-PRP, anti-polio 1, 2, 3) and adjusted geometric mean concentrations (anti-PT, anti-FIM). Safety was assessed by parental reports. Results: Lot-to-lot consistency was demonstrated for DTwP-IPV-HB-PRP∼T and non-inferiority versus DTwP-HB-PRP∼T and IPV was confirmed with 95% CIs for seroprotection rate differences and adjusted geometric mean concentration ratios within pre-defined clinical margins. Pooled seroprotection rate was ≥ 99.7% for anti-D ≥ 0.01 IU/mL, anti-T ≥ 0.01 IU/mL, anti-HBs ≥ 10 mIU/mL, anti-PRP ≥ 0.15 µg/mL, and anti-polio 1, 2, and 3 ≥ 8 (1/dil) and vaccine response rate was 83.9% for anti-PT and 97.7% for anti-FIM. There were no safety concerns. Conclusions: Immunogenicity of three lots of the fully liquid DTwP-IPV-HB-PRP∼T vaccine was consistent and non-inferior to licensed comparators following vaccination at 6–8, 10–12, and 14–16 weeks of age. There were no safety concerns and no evidence of any effect of co-administration with rotavirus vaccine.

2. Mining Hierarchies with Conviction: Constructing the CS1 Skill Hierarchy with Pairwise Comparisons over Skill Distributions

Abstract: The skills taught in introductory programming courses are categorized into 1) \textit{explaining} the purpose of code, 2) the ability to arrange lines of code in correct \textit{sequence }, and 3) the ability to \textit{trace} through the execution of a program, and 4) the ability to \textit{write} code from scratch. Knowing if a programming skill is a prerequisite to another would benefit students, particularly those new to programming, by allowing them to encounter new topics in the optimal skill sequence. In this study, we used the conviction measure from association rule mining to perform pair-wise comparisons of five skills: Write, Trace, Reverse trace, Sequence, and Explain code. We used the data from four exams with more than 600 participants in each exam from a public university in the United States, where students solved programming assignments of different skills for several programming topics. Our findings matched the previous finding that tracing is a prerequisite for students to learn to write code. But, contradicting the previous claims, our analysis showed that writing code is a prerequisite skill to explaining code and that sequencing code is not a prerequisite to writing code. Our research can help instructors by systematically arranging the skills students exercise when encountering a new topic. The goal is to reduce the difficulties students experience when learning that topic.

Abstract: We use a custom-made calibrator to measure individual detectors' polarization angles of BICEP3, a small aperture telescope observing the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at 95GHz from the South Pole. We describe our calibration strategy and the statistical and systematic uncertainties associated with the measurement. We reach an unprecedented precision for such measurement on a CMB experiment, with a repeatability for each detector pair of $0.02\deg$. We show that the relative angles measured using this method are in excellent agreement with those extracted from CMB data. Because the absolute measurement is currently limited by a systematic uncertainty, we do not derive cosmic birefringence constraints from BICEP3 data in this work. Rather, we forecast the sensitivity of BICEP3 sky maps for such analysis. We investigate the relative contributions of instrument noise, lensing, and dust, as well as astrophysical and instrumental systematics. We also explore the constraining power of different angle estimators, depending on analysis choices. We establish that the BICEP3 2-year dataset (2017--2018) has an on-sky sensitivity to the cosmic birefringence angle of $\sigma = 0.078\deg$, which could be improved to $\sigma = 0.055\deg$ by adding all of the existing BICEP3 data (through 2023). Furthermore, we emphasize the possibility of using the BICEP3 sky patch as a polarization calibration source for CMB experiments, which with the present data could reach a precision of $0.035\deg$. Finally, in the context of inflation searches, we investigate the impact of detector-to-detector variations in polarization angles as they may bias the tensor-to-scalar ratio r. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 5. A Framework to Enable Algorithmic Design Choice Exploration in DNNs

Abstract: Deep learning technologies, particularly deep neural networks (DNNs), have demonstrated significant success across many domains. This success has been accompanied by substantial advancements and innovations in the algorithms behind the operations required by DNNs. These enhanced algorithms hold the potential to greatly increase the performance of DNNs. However, discovering the best performing algorithm for a DNN and altering the DNN to use such algorithm is a difficult and time consuming task. To address this, we introduce an open source framework which provides easy to use fine grain algorithmic control for DNNs, enabling algorithmic exploration and selection. Along with built-in high performance implementations of common deep learning operations, the framework enables users to implement and select their own algorithms to be utilized by the DNN. The framework's built-in accelerated implementations are shown to yield outputs equivalent to and exhibit similar performance as implementations in PyTorch, a popular DNN framework. 6. Integrating Natural Language Prompting Tasks in Introductory Programming Courses

Abstract: Introductory programming courses often emphasize mastering syntax and basic constructs before progressing to more complex and interesting programs. This bottom-up approach can be frustrating for novices, shifting the focus away from problem solving and potentially making computing less appealing to a broad range of students. The rise of generative AI for code production could partially address these issues by fostering new skills via interaction with AI models, including constructing high-level prompts and evaluating code that is automatically generated. In this experience report, we explore the inclusion of two prompt-focused activities in an introductory course, implemented across four labs in a six-week module. The first requires students to solve computational problems by writing natural language prompts, emphasizing problem-solving over syntax. The second involves students crafting prompts to generate code equivalent to provided fragments, to foster an understanding of the relationship between prompts and code. Most of the students in the course had reported finding programming difficult to learn, often citing frustrations with syntax and debugging. We found that self-reported difficulty with learning programming had a strong inverse relationship with performance on traditional programming assessments such as tests and projects, as expected. However, performance on the natural language tasks was less strongly related to self-reported difficulty, suggesting they may target different skills. Learning how to communicate with AI coding models is becoming an important skill, and natural language prompting tasks may appeal to a broad range of students., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: We study the Poincar\'e gauge theory of gravity with the most general Lagrangian quadratic in curvature and torsion, focusing on the possible interaction of the axial torsion with the electromagnetic field. From the analysis of the closed system of field equations, we identify the magnetic helicity density and the spin density of the electromagnetic field as the components of the source for the torsion field. 8. Explain in Plain Language Questions with Indic Languages: Drawbacks, Affordances, and Opportunities

Abstract: Background: Introductory computer science courses use ``Explain in Plain English'' (EiPE) activities to develop and assess students' code comprehension skills, but creating effective autograders for these questions is challenging and limited to English. This is a particular challenge in linguistically diverse countries like India where students may have limited proficiency in English. Methods: We evaluate the efficacy of a recently introduced approach called Code Generation Based Grading (CGBG) in enabling language agnostic ``Explain in Plain Language'' (EiPL) activities. Here students' EiPL responses generate code that is tested for functional equivalence to the original which was being described. Objectives: We initially evaluate the correctness of code generated from correct EiPL responses provided in 10 of India's most commonly spoken languages. To evaluate the effectiveness of the approach in practice, we assess student success and perceptions of EiPL questions in a NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) course. Results: We find promising results for the correctness of code generated from translations of correct EiPL responses, with most languages achieving a correctness rate of 75% or higher. 9. Spatially Resolved Plasma Composition Evolution in a Solar Flare -- The Effect of Reconnection Outflow

Abstract: Solar flares exhibit complex variations in elemental abundances compared to photospheric values. We examine the spatial and temporal evolution of coronal abundances in the X8.2 flare on 2017 September 10, aiming to interpret the often observed high first ionization potential (FIP) bias at loop tops and provide insights into differences between spatially resolved and Sun-as-a-star flare composition measurements. We analyze 12 Hinode/EIS raster scans spanning 3.5 hours, employing Ca XIV 193.87 A/Ar XIV 194.40 A and Fe XVI 262.98 A/S XIII 256.69 A composition diagnostics to derive FIP bias values. Both diagnostics consistently show that flare loop tops maintain high FIP bias values of >2-6, with peak phase values exceeding 4, over the extended duration, while footpoints exhibit photospheric FIP bias of ~1. We propose that this variation arises from a combination of two distinct processes: high FIP bias plasma downflows from the plasma sheet confined to loop tops, and chromospheric evaporation filling the loop footpoints with low FIP bias plasma. Mixing between these two sources produces the observed gradient. Our observations show that the localized high FIP bias signature at loop tops is likely diluted by the bright footpoint emission in spatially averaged measurements. The spatially resolved spectroscopic observations enabled by EIS prove critical for revealing this complex abundance variation in loops. Furthermore, our observations show clear evidence that the origin of hot flare plasma in flaring loops consists of a combination of both directly heated plasma in the corona and from ablated chromospheric material; and our results provide valuable insights into the formation and composition of loop top brightenings, also known as EUV knots, which are a common feature at the tops of flare loops., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Abstract: The BICEP3 and BICEP Array polarimeters are small-aperture refracting telescopes located at the South Pole designed to measure primordial gravitational wave signatures in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization, predicted by inflation. Constraining the inflationary signal requires not only excellent sensitivity, but also careful control of instrumental systematics. Both instruments use antenna-coupled orthogonally polarized detector pairs, and the polarized sky signal is reconstructed by taking the difference in each detector pair. As a result, the differential response between detectors within a pair becomes an important systematic effect we must control. Additionally, mapping the intensity and polarization response in regions away from the main beam can inform how sidelobe levels affect CMB measurements. Extensive calibration measurements are taken in situ every austral summer for control of instrumental systematics and instrument characterisation. In this work, we detail the set of beam calibration measurements that we conduct on the BICEP receivers, from deep measurements of main beam response to polarized beam response and sidelobe mapping. 11. Operator-Projected Variational Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution

Abstract: Variational Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution (VQITE) is a leading technique for ground state preparation on quantum computers. A significant computational challenge of VQITE is the determination of the quantum geometric tensor. We show that requiring the imaginary-time evolution to be correct only when projected onto a chosen set of operators allows to achieve a twofold reduction in circuit depth by bypassing fidelity estimations, and reduces measurement complexity from quadratic to linear in the number of parameters. We demonstrate by a simulation of the transverse-field Ising model that our algorithm achieves a several orders of magnitude improvement in the number of measurements required for the same accuracy.

12. Magnetic phase diagram of the three-dimensional doped Hubbard model

Abstract: We establish the phase diagram of the Hubbard model on a cubic lattice for a wide range of temperatures, dopings and interaction strengths, considering both commensurate and incommensurate magnetic orders. We use the dynamical mean-field theory together with an efficient method to compute the free energy which enable the determination of the correct ordering vectors. Besides an antiferromagnetic state close to half-filling, we identify a number of different magnetic spiral phases with ordering vectors $(q,\pi,\pi)$, $(q,q,\pi)$ and $(q,q,q)$ as well as a region with close competition between them, hinting at spatial phase separation or at the onset of a stripe phase. Additionally, we extensively study several thermodynamic properties with direct relevance to cold-atom experiments: the entropy, energy and double-occupancy.

Abstract: Measurements of B-mode polarization in the CMB sourced from primordial gravitational waves would provide information on the energy scale of inflation and its potential form. To achieve these goals, one must carefully characterize the Galactic foregrounds, which can be distinguished from the CMB by conducting measurements at multiple frequencies. BICEP Array is the latest-generation multi-frequency instrument of the BICEP/Keck program, which specifically targets degree-scale primordial B-modes in the CMB. In its final configuration, this telescope will consist of four small-aperture receivers, spanning frequency bands from 30 to 270 GHz. The 220/270 GHz receiver designed to characterize Galactic dust is currently undergoing commissioning at Stanford University and is scheduled to deploy to the South Pole during the 2024--2025 austral summer. Here, we will provide an overview of this high-frequency receiver and discuss the integration status and test results as it is being commissioned.

Abstract: Deep learning based approaches are now widely used across biophysics to help automate a variety of tasks including image segmentation, feature selection, and deconvolution. However, the presence of multiple competing deep learning architectures, each with its own unique advantages and disadvantages, makes it challenging to select an architecture best suited for a specific application. As such, we present a comprehensive comparison of common models. Here, we focus on the task of segmentation assuming the typically small training dataset sizes available from biophysics experiments and compare the following four commonly used architectures: convolutional neural networks, U-Nets, vision transformers, and vision state space models. In doing so, we establish criteria for determining optimal conditions under which each model excels, thereby offering practical guidelines for researchers and practitioners in the field.

15. Contextual Subspace Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo: Improved bias with reduced quantum resources

Abstract: Using trial wavefunctions prepared on quantum devices to reduce the bias of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (QC-AFQMC) has established itself as a promising hybrid approach to the simulation of strongly correlated many body systems. Here, we further reduce the required quantum resources by decomposing the trial wavefunction into classical and quantum parts, respectively treated by classical and quantum devices, within the contextual subspace projection formalism. Importantly, we show that our algorithm is compatible with the recently developed matchgate shadow protocol for efficient overlap calculation in QC-AFQMC. Investigating the nitrogen dimer and the reductive decomposition of ethylene carbonate in lithium-based batteries, we observe that our method outperforms a number of established algorithm for ground state energy computations, while reaching chemical accuracy with less than half of the original number of qubits., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

16. Variational Bayesian Phylogenetic Inference with Semi-implicit Branch Length Distributions

Abstract: Reconstructing the evolutionary history relating a collection of molecular sequences is the main subject of modern Bayesian phylogenetic inference. However, the commonly used Markov chain Monte Carlo methods can be inefficient due to the complicated space of phylogenetic trees, especially when the number of sequences is large. An alternative approach is variational Bayesian phylogenetic inference (VBPI) which transforms the inference problem into an optimization problem. While effective, the default diagonal lognormal approximation for the branch lengths of the tree used in VBPI is often insufficient to capture the complexity of the exact posterior. In this work, we propose a more flexible family of branch length variational posteriors based on semi-implicit hierarchical distributions using graph neural networks. We show that this semi-implicit construction emits straightforward permutation equivariant distributions, and therefore can handle the non-Euclidean branch length space across different tree topologies with ease. To deal with the intractable marginal probability of semi-implicit variational distributions, we develop several alternative lower bounds for stochastic optimization. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method over baseline methods on benchmark data examples, in terms of both marginal likelihood estimation and branch length posterior approximation., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

17. Generative AI in Technical Communication: A Review of Research from 2023 to 2024

Abstract: Since its release in late 2022, ChatGPT and subsequent generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools have raised a wide variety of questions and concerns for the field of technical communication: How will these tools be incorporated into professional settings? How might we appropriately integrate these tools into our research and teaching? In this review, we examine research published in 2023-2024 addressing these questions (N = 28). Overall, we find preliminary evidence that GAI tools can positively impact student writing and assessment; they also have the potential to assist with some aspects of academic and medical research and writing. However, there are concerns about their reliability and the ethical conundrums raised when they are used inappropriately or when their outputs cannot be distinguished from humans. More research is needed for evidence-based teaching and research strategies as well as policies guiding ethical use. We offer suggestions for new research avenues and methods.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Exposure to antiretrovirals at or early after HIV acquisition can suppress viral replication and blunt antibody (Ab) responses; a reduced HIV detectability could impact diagnosis and blood donation screening. METHODS: We used three antigen (Ag)/Ab assays and one nucleic acid test (NAT) to analyze samples collected in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) trials (iPrEx; Partners PrEP) before infection detection by Ab-only rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), and in early antiretroviral treatment (ART) initiation studies (RV254; SIPP). 19. Enabling Uniform Computer Interaction Experience for Blind Users through Large Language Models

Abstract: Blind individuals, who by necessity depend on screen readers to interact with computers, face considerable challenges in navigating the diverse and complex graphical user interfaces of different computer applications. The heterogeneity of various application interfaces often requires blind users to remember different keyboard combinations and navigation methods to use each application effectively. To alleviate this significant interaction burden imposed by heterogeneous application interfaces, we present Savant, a novel assistive technology powered by large language models (LLMs) that allows blind screen reader users to interact uniformly with any application interface through natural language. Novelly, Savant can automate a series of tedious screen reader actions on the control elements of the application when prompted by a natural language command from the user. These commands can be flexible in the sense that the user is not strictly required to specify the exact names of the control elements in the command. A user study evaluation of Savant with 11 blind participants demonstrated significant improvements in interaction efficiency and usability compared to current practices.

20. Non-thermal Observations of a Flare Loop-top using IRIS Fe XXI: Implications for Turbulence and Electron Acceleration

Abstract: The excess broadening of high-temperature spectral lines, long observed near the tops of flare arcades, is widely considered to result from magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. According to different theories, plasma turbulence is also believed to be a candidate mechanism for particle acceleration during solar flares. However, the degree to which this broadening is connected to the acceleration of non-thermal electrons remains largely unexplored outside of recent work, and many observations have been limited by limited spatial resolution and cadence. Using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS), we present spatially resolved observations of loop-top broadenings using hot (11MK) Fe XXI 1354.1 \r{A} line emission at ~9s cadence during the 2022 March 30 X1.3 flare. We find non-thermal velocities upwards of 65km/s that decay linearly with time, indicating the presence and subsequent dissipation of plasma turbulence. Moreover, the initial Fe XXI signal was found to be co-spatial and co-temporal with microwave emission measured by the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA), placing a population of non-thermal electrons in the same region as the loop-top turbulence. Evidence of electron acceleration at this time is further supported by hard X-ray measurements from the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) aboard Solar Orbiter. Using the decay of non-thermal broadenings as a proxy for turbulent dissipation, we found the rate of energy dissipation to be consistent with the power of non-thermal electrons deposited into the chromosphere, suggesting a possible connection between turbulence and electron acceleration.

Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. 22. Polaritonic Chemistry using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method

Abstract: The emerging field of polaritonic chemistry explores the behavior of molecules under strong coupling with cavity modes. Despite recent developments in ab initio polaritonic methods for simulating polaritonic chemistry under electronic strong coupling, their capabilities are limited, especially in cases where the molecule also features strong electronic correlation. To bridge this gap, we have developed a novel method for cavity QED calculations utilizing the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm in conjunction with the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian. Our approach is applied to investigate the effect of the cavity on the S0 -S1 transition of n-oligoacenes, with n ranging from 2 to 5, encompassing 22 fully correlated {\pi} orbitals in the largest pentacene molecule. Our findings indicate that the influence of the cavity intensifies with larger acenes. Additionally, we demonstrate that, unlike the full determinantal representation, DMRG efficiently optimizes and eliminates excess photonic degrees of freedom, resulting in an asymptotically constant computational cost as the photonic basis increases.

23. Torchtree: flexible phylogenetic model development and inference using PyTorch

Abstract: Bayesian inference has predominantly relied on the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm for many years. However, MCMC is computationally laborious, especially for complex phylogenetic models of time trees. This bottleneck has led to the search for alternatives, such as variational Bayes, which can scale better to large datasets. In this paper, we introduce torchtree, a framework written in Python that allows developers to easily implement rich phylogenetic models and algorithms using a fixed tree topology. One can either use automatic differentiation, or leverage torchtree's plug-in system to compute gradients analytically for model components for which automatic differentiation is slow. We demonstrate that the torchtree variational inference framework performs similarly to BEAST in terms of speed and approximation accuracy. Furthermore, we explore the use of the forward KL divergence as an optimizing criterion for variational inference, which can handle discontinuous and non-differentiable models. Our experiments show that inference using the forward KL divergence tends to be faster per iteration compared to the evidence lower bound (ELBO) criterion, although the ELBO-based inference may converge faster in some cases. Abstract: The BICEP/$\textit{Keck}$ (BK) series of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments has, over the past decade and a half, produced a series of field-leading constraints on cosmic inflation via measurements of the "B-mode" polarization of the CMB. Primordial B modes are directly tied to the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves (PGW), their strength parameterized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, and thus the energy scale of inflation. Having set the most sensitive constraints to-date on $r$, $\sigma(r)=0.009$ ($r_{0.05}<0.036, 95\%$ C.L.) using data through the 2018 observing season ("BK18"), the BICEP/$\textit{Keck}$ program has continued to improve its dataset in the years since. We give a brief overview of the BK program and the "BK18" result before discussing the program's ongoing efforts, including the deployment and performance of the $\textit{Keck Array}$'s successor instrument, BICEP Array, improvements to data processing and internal consistency testing, new techniques such as delensing, and how those will ultimately serve to allow BK reach $\sigma(r) \lesssim 0.003$ using data through the 2027 observing season., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. 25. Evaluating Micro Parsons Problems as Exam Questions

Abstract: Parsons problems are a type of programming activity that present learners with blocks of existing code and requiring them to arrange those blocks to form a program rather than write the code from scratch. Micro Parsons problems extend this concept by having students assemble segments of code to form a single line of code rather than an entire program. Recent investigations into micro Parsons problems have primarily focused on supporting learners leaving open the question of micro Parsons efficacy as an exam item and how students perceive it when preparing for exams. To fill this gap, we included a variety of micro Parsons problems on four exams in an introductory programming course taught in Python. We use Item Response Theory to investigate the difficulty of the micro Parsons problems as well as the ability of the questions to differentiate between high and low ability students. We then compare these results to results for related questions where students are asked to write a single line of code from scratch. Abstract: Gliomas are the most common malignant primary brain tumors in adults and one of the deadliest types of cancer. There are many challenges in treatment and monitoring due to the genetic diversity and high intrinsic heterogeneity in appearance, shape, histology, and treatment response. Treatments include surgery, radiation, and systemic therapies, with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) playing a key role in treatment planning and post-treatment longitudinal assessment. The 2024 Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge on post-treatment glioma MRI will provide a community standard and benchmark for state-of-the-art automated segmentation models based on the largest expert-annotated post-treatment glioma MRI dataset. Challenge competitors will develop automated segmentation models to predict four distinct tumor sub-regions consisting of enhancing tissue (ET), surrounding non-enhancing T2/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) hyperintensity (SNFH), non-enhancing tumor core (NETC), and resection cavity (RC). Models will be evaluated on separate validation and test datasets using standardized performance metrics utilized across the BraTS 2024 cluster of challenges, including lesion-wise Dice Similarity Coefficient and Hausdorff Distance. Abstract: Identifying terrain within satellite image data is a key issue in geographical information sciences, with numerous environmental and safety implications. Many techniques exist to derive classifications from spectral data captured by satellites. However, the ability to reliably classify vegetation remains a challenge. In particular, no precise methods exist for classifying forest vs. non-forest vegetation in high-level satellite images. This paper provides an initial proposal for a static, algorithmic process to identify forest regions in satellite image data through texture features created from detected edges and the NDVI ratio captured by Sentinel-2 satellite images. With strong initial results, this paper also identifies the next steps to improve the accuracy of the classification and verification processes.

Abstract: The recent, widespread availability of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot may impact introductory programming courses (CS1) both in terms of what should be taught and how to teach it. Indeed, recent research has shown that LLMs are capable of solving the majority of the assignments and exams we previously used in CS1. In addition, professional software engineers are often using these tools, raising the question of whether we should be training our students in their use as well. This experience report describes a CS1 course at a large research-intensive university that fully embraces the use of LLMs from the beginning of the course. To incorporate the LLMs, the course was intentionally altered to reduce emphasis on syntax and writing code from scratch. Instead, the course now emphasizes skills needed to successfully produce software with an LLM. This includes explaining code, testing code, and decomposing large problems into small functions that are solvable by an LLM. In addition to frequent, formative assessments of these skills, students were given three large, open-ended projects in three separate domains (data science, image processing, and game design) that allowed them to showcase their creativity in topics of their choosing. In an end-of-term survey, students reported that they appreciated learning with the assistance of the LLM and that they interacted with the LLM in a variety of ways when writing code. Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. 32. Automatic Modulation Classification using a Waveform Signature

Abstract: Cognitive Radios (CRs) build upon Software Defined Radios (SDRs) to allow for autonomous reconfiguration of communication architectures. In recent years, CRs have been identified as an enabler for Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) applications in which secondary users opportunistically share licensed spectrum. A major challenge for DSA is accurately characterizing the spectral environment, which requires blind signal classification. Existing work in this area has focused on simplistic channel models; however, more challenging fading channels (e.g., frequency selective fading channels) cause existing methods to be computationally complex or insufficient. This paper develops a novel blind modulation classification algorithm, which uses a set of higher order statistics to overcome these challenges. The set of statistics forms a signature, which can either be used directly for classification or can be processed using big data analytical techniques, such as principle component analysis (PCA), to learn the environment. The algorithm is tested in simulation on both flat fading and selective fading channel models. 33. Explaining Code with a Purpose: An Integrated Approach for Developing Code Comprehension and Prompting Skills

Abstract: Reading, understanding and explaining code have traditionally been important skills for novices learning programming. As large language models (LLMs) become prevalent, these foundational skills are more important than ever given the increasing need to understand and evaluate model-generated code. Brand new skills are also needed, such as the ability to formulate clear prompts that can elicit intended code from an LLM. Thus, there is great interest in integrating pedagogical approaches for the development of both traditional coding competencies and the novel skills required to interact with LLMs. One effective way to develop and assess code comprehension ability is with ``Explain in plain English'' (EiPE) questions, where students succinctly explain the purpose of a fragment of code. However, grading EiPE questions has always been difficult given the subjective nature of evaluating written explanations and this has stifled their uptake. In this paper, we explore a natural synergy between EiPE questions and code-generating LLMs to overcome this limitation. We propose using an LLM to generate code based on students' responses to EiPE questions -- not only enabling EiPE responses to be assessed automatically, but helping students develop essential code comprehension and prompt crafting skills in parallel. We investigate this idea in an introductory programming course and report student success in creating effective prompts for solving EiPE questions. Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The spin current model of electric polarization of multiferroics is justified via the quantum hydrodynamic method and the mean-field part of the spin-orbit interaction. The spin current model is applied to derive the electric polarization proportional to the scalar product of the spins of the near by ions, which appears to be caused by the Dzylaoshinskii-Moriya interaction. Symmetric tensor spin structure of the polarization is discussed as well. We start our derivations for the ferromagnetic multiferroic materials and present the further generalization for the antiferromagnetic multiferroic materials. We rederive the operator of the electric dipole moment, which provides the macroscopic polarization obtained via the spin current model. Finally, we use the quantum average of the found electric dipole moment operator in order to derive the polarization evolution equation for the antiferromagnetic multiferroic materials. 36. On the Optimality of CVOD-based Column Selection

Abstract: While there exists a rich array of matrix column subset selection problem (CSSP) algorithms for use with interpolative and CUR-type decompositions, their use can often become prohibitive as the size of the input matrix increases. In an effort to address these issues, the authors in \cite{emelianenko2024adaptive} developed a general framework that pairs a column-partitioning routine with a column-selection algorithm. Two of the four algorithms presented in that work paired the Centroidal Voronoi Orthogonal Decomposition (\textsf{CVOD}) and an adaptive variant (\textsf{adaptCVOD}) with the Discrete Empirical Interpolation Method (\textsf{DEIM}) \cite{sorensen2016deim}. In this work, we extend this framework and pair the \textsf{CVOD}-type algorithms with any CSSP algorithm that returns linearly independent columns. Our results include detailed error bounds for the solutions provided by these paired algorithms, as well as expressions that explicitly characterize how the quality of the selected column partition affects the resulting CSSP solution., Comment: 15 pages. 37. Low-Weight High-Distance Error Correcting Fermionic Encodings

Abstract: We perform an extended numerical search for practical fermion-to-qubit encodings with error correcting properties. Ideally, encodings should strike a balance between a number of the seemingly incompatible attributes, such as having a high minimum distance, low-weight fermionic logical operators, a small qubit to fermionic mode ratio and a simple qubit connectivity graph including ancilla qubits for the measurement of stabilizers. Our strategy consists of a three-step procedure in which we: first generate encodings with code distances up to $d\leq4$ by a brute-force enumeration technique; subsequently, we use these encodings as starting points and apply Clifford deformations to them which allows us to identify higher-distance codes with $d\leq7$; finally, we optimize the hardware connectivity graphs of resulting encodings in terms of the graph thickness and the number of connections per qubit. We report multiple promising high-distance encodings which significantly improve the weights of stabilizers and logical operators compared to previously reported alternatives.

38. Interaction-enhanced nesting in Spin-Fermion and Fermi-Hubbard models

Abstract: The spin-fermion (SF) model postulates that the dominant coupling between low-energy fermions in near critical metals is mediated by collective spin fluctuations (paramagnons) peaked at the N\'{e}el wave vector, ${\bf Q}_N$, connecting hot spots on opposite sides of the Fermi surface. It has been argued that strong correlations at hot spots lead to a Fermi surface deformation (FSD) featuring flat regions and increased nesting. This conjecture was confirmed in the perturbative self-consistent calculations when the paramagnon propagator dependence on momentum deviation from ${\bf Q}_N$ is given by $\chi^{-1} \propto |\Delta q|$. Using diagrammatic Monte Carlo (diagMC) technique we show that such a dependence holds only at temperatures orders of magnitude smaller than any other energy scale in the problem, indicating that a different mechanism may be at play. Instead, we find that a $\chi^{-1} \propto |\Delta q|^{2}$ dependence yields a robust finite-$T$ scenario for achieving FSD. To link phenomenological and microscopic descriptions, we applied the connected determinant diagMC method to the $(t-t')$ Hubbard model and found that in this case: (i) the FSD is not very pronounced, and, instead, it is the lines of zeros of the renormalized dispersion relation that deform towards nesting; (ii) this phenomenon appears at large $U/t>5.5$ before the formation of electron and hole pockets; (iii) the static spin susceptibility is well described by $\chi^{-1} \propto |\Delta q|^{2}$. 39. On the importance of assessing topological convergence in Bayesian phylogenetic inference

Abstract: Modern phylogenetics research is often performed within a Bayesian framework, using sampling algorithms such as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to approximate the posterior distribution. These algorithms require careful evaluation of the quality of the generated samples. Within the field of phylogenetics, one frequently adopted diagnostic approach is to evaluate the effective sample size (ESS) and to investigate trace graphs of the sampled parameters. A major limitation of these approaches is that they are developed for continuous parameters and therefore incompatible with a crucial parameter in these inferences: the tree topology. Several recent advancements have aimed at extending these diagnostics to topological space. In this reflection paper, we present two case studies - one on Ebola virus and one on HIV - illustrating how these topological diagnostics can contain information not found in standard diagnostics, and how decisions regarding which of these diagnostics to compute can impact inferences regarding MCMC convergence and mixing. Our results show the importance of running multiple replicate analyses and of carefully assessing topological convergence using the output of these replicate analyses. To this end, we illustrate different ways of assessing and visualizing the topological convergence of these replicates. Given the major importance of detecting convergence and mixing issues in Bayesian phylogenetic analyses, the lack of a unified approach to this problem warrants further action, especially now that additional tools are becoming available to researchers.

Abstract: In this paper, we define canonical lifts of vector fields to the multisymplectic multimomentum bundles of De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian first-order field theories and to the appropriate premultisymplectic embedded constraint submanifolds on which singular field theories are studied. These new canonical lifts are used to study the so-called natural Noether symmetries present in both regular and singular Hamiltonian field theories along with their associated conserved quantities obtained from Noether's theorem. The Klein-Gordon field, the Polyakov bosonic string, and Einstein-Cartan gravity in 3 + 1 dimensions are analyzed in depth as applications of these concepts; as a peripheral result obtained in the analysis of the bosonic string, we provide a new geometrical interpretation of the well-known Virasoro constraint., Comment: 36 pages. 41. Adaptive Voronoi-based Column Selection Methods for Interpretable Dimensionality Reduction

Abstract: In data analysis, there continues to be a need for interpretable dimensionality reduction methods whereby instrinic meaning associated with the data is retained in the reduced space. Standard approaches such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) fail at this task. A popular alternative is the CUR decomposition. In an SVD-like manner, the CUR decomposition approximates a matrix $A \in \mathbb{R}^{m \times n}$ as $A \approx CUR$, where $C$ and $R$ are matrices whose columns and rows are selected from the original matrix \cite{goreinov1997theory}, \cite{mahoney2009cur}. The difficulty in constructing a CUR decomposition is in determining which columns and rows to select when forming $C$ and $R$. Current column/row selection algorithms, particularly those that rely on an SVD, become infeasible as the size of the data becomes large \cite{dong2021simpler}. We address this problem by reducing the column/row selection problem to a collection of smaller sub-problems. The basic idea is to first partition the rows/columns of a matrix, and then apply an existing selection algorithm on each piece; for illustration purposes we use the Discrete Empirical Interpolation Method (\textsf{DEIM}) \cite{sorensen2016deim}. For the first task, we consider two existing algorithms that construct a Voronoi Tessellation (VT) of the rows and columns of a given matrix. We then extend these methods to automatically adapt to the data. The result is four data-driven row/column selection methods that are well-suited for parallelization, and compatible with nearly any existing column/row selection strategy.
