Abstract

A twenty-year-old male Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) presented at the Rakuno Gakuen University Animal Medical Center with a 10-year history of bilateral blindness and cataracts. Surgical treatment of bilateral cataracts by extracapsular lensextraction using phacoemulsification and aspiration (PEA) was performed under general anesthesia. An anterior capsulectomy was performed using micro iris scissors and micro anterior lens capsule forceps. The cataract was removed with PEA using the two-handed technique. After surgery, systemic corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics were administered. After cataract removal, the bear had recovered vision, and good quality vision has been maintained to date (15 months). PEA can be a safe and effective treatment for cataracts that impair vision in bears.

Abstract

The loss of skeletal muscle mass is a major cause of falls and fractures in the elderly, leading to compromised independence and a decrease in the quality of life. However, only a few therapeutic interventions leading to marginal clinical benefits in patients with this condition are currently available. Therefore, the demand to further understand the pathology of muscle atrophy and establish a treatment modality for patients with muscle atrophy is significant. p38α mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38α MAPK) is a ubiquitous signaling molecule that is implicated in various cellular functions, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and senescence. In the present study, we generated a mutant line in which p38α MAPK is specifically abrogated in muscle tissues. Compared with the control mice, these mutant mice are significantly resistant to denervation-induced muscle atrophy, suggesting that p38α MAPK positively regulates muscle atrophy. We also identified CAMK2B as a potential downstream target of p38α MAPK and found that the pharmacological inhibition of CAMK2B activity suppresses denervation-induced muscle atrophy. Altogether, our findings identify p38α MAPK as a novel regulator of muscle atrophy and suggest that the suppression of intracellular signaling mediated by p38α MAPK serves as a potential target for the treatment of muscle atrophy.

Several modular studies are conducted to study the properties of the supramolecular receptor of diatomic molecules ([O.sub.2], CO, NO) in aqueous solution. The analysis proves that the orientation of the proximal base plays an extremely significant role in improving the affinities of ferrous porphyrin to the diatomic molecules.

28. Effect of intramuscular administration of medetomidine and xylazine on tear flow measured by the Schirmer tear test I in healthy cats.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of intramuscular medetomidine and xylazine on tear flow in healthy cats. Methods: Five cats each received medetomidine 10, 20, 40 and 80 µg/kg IM; xylazine 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mg/kg IM; and physiological saline (2.0 ml IM) in a randomised order separated by intervals of at least 1 week. The Schirmer tear test (STT) I was performed in both eyes before and 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 24 h after each dose. Results: The STT I value decreased significantly at 0.5 and 1.0 h and at 0.75 and 1.0 h in both eyes after administration of medetomidine at 10 or 40 µg/kg. After administration of medetomidine 80 µg/kg, there was a significant decrease in the STT I reading at 0.75, 2 and 3 h in the left eye and 0.75, 1, 2 and 3 h in the right eye. The STT I value decreased significantly at: 0.5, 0.75, 1 and 2 h in the left eye and 0.75 h in the right eye after administration of xylazine 1.0 mg/kg; 0.5, 0.75, 1 and 2 h in the left eye and 0.5, 0.75, 1 and 3 h in the right eye after administration of xylazine 2.0 mg/kg; 0.5, 0.75, 1 and 2 h in both eyes after administration of xylazine 4.0 mg/kg; and 0.5, 0.75, 1, 2 and 3 h in the left eye and 0.75, 1, 2, 3 and 4 h in the right eye after administration of xylazine 8.0 mg/kg. Conclusions and relevance: Both medetomidine and xylazine significantly decreased feline tear flow measured by STT I. 29. Differentiating polarization curve technique for determining the exchange current density of hydrogen electrode reaction

Abstract

The authors propose a new method to easily and reliably determine the exchange current density (i0) of hydrogen evolution reaction (her). The validity of a novel method named the differential polarization method (DPM) was ascertained by the estimation of i0 on platinum electrode in acid solutions. The hers in 0.005, 0.05 and 0.5 mol dm−3 H2SO4 solutions were visually categorized as reversible reactions. The obtained i0 had constant values of about 0.5 mA cm−2, corresponding to the appearance of a vertical line on the anodic polarization resistance curve. This DPM shows the i0 is corresponds to the limiting diffusion current density of the hydrogen oxidation reaction. We believe that the DPM has the potential to be a beneficial and reliable method for estimating electrochemical parameters.

Abstract

前回(田中ら, 2000a)にひき続き, 広島県三次盆地で, 2000年11月, 盆地霧の総合的な観測を行った。期間中気象条件が様々に変化し, 多様な霧の動態と構造を観測できた。霧は, 盆地底で発生するものと周辺から流入するものとから成る。霧の動態と山の斜面や霧の表面温度, 気温や水蒸気分布とが対応していることが再確認された。霧発生前の14-16時頃から18-21時頃にかけて, 盆地内における水蒸気量の増大がみられた。これらは前回示した数値実験結果と符号する。, In November 2000, we conducted the second year intensive observation of the fog over the Miyoshibasin of Hiroshima Prefecture with a lot of classes of observational instruments. Under the changeable synoptic meteorological conditions, various types of fog formations could be observed. While fogs were formed partly in the basin, some fogs developed in the surrounding hill foot, flowed down, and merged into the fogs in the basin. It was confirmed that the fog appearances well agreed with the observations of the winds, temperatures, and humidities in the fog layer, on the fog surface, and on the grounds. The water vapor increased from several hours before the fog formation (14-16.1ST to 18-21JST). This fact supports the result of the numerical model shown in our previous work (Tanaka et al., 2000a).

A study of novel chiral ruthenium bis(oxazolinyl)pyridine catalyst facilitates facile asymmetric cyclopropanation of olefins and diazoacetates. (RuIICl2(p-cymene))2 (1) was used as a stable precursor. 2-phenylcyclopropanecarboxylates, cis-isomer and the trans-isomer result from catalysis facilitated by the dark red solution from 1 and 2.
