Search

Magnetic Johnson noise is an important consideration for many applications involving precision magnetometry, and its significance will only increase in the future with improvements in measurement sensitivity. The fluctuation-dissipation theorem can be utilized to derive analytic expressions for magnetic Johnson noise in certain situations. But when used in conjunction with commercially available finite element analysis tools, the combined approach is particularly powerful as it provides a practical means to calculate the magnetic Johnson noise arising from conductors of arbitrary geometry and permeability. In this paper, we demonstrate this method to be one of the most comprehensive approaches presently available to calculate thermal magnetic noise. In particular, its applicability is shown to not be limited to cases where the noise is evaluated at a point in space but also can be expanded to include cases where the magnetic field detector has a more general shape, such as a finite size loop, a gradiometer, or a detector that consists of a polarized atomic species trapped in a volume. Furthermore, some physics insights gained through studies made using this method are discussed.

The past two decades have yielded several new measurements and reanalysis of older measurements of the neutron lifetime. These have led to a 4.4 standard deviation discrepancy between the most precise measurements of the neutron decay rate producing protons in cold neutron beams and the most precise lifetime measured in neutron storage experiments. Here we publish an analysis of the recently published UCN aimed a searching for an explanation of this difference using the model proposed by Koch and Hummel.

We have developed a two-dimensional neutron imager based on a semiconductor pixelated sensor, especially designed for experiments measuring of a spatial and a temporal behavior of quantum bound states of ultra-cold neutrons. Through these measurements, we expect to measure the ratio between the inertial and gravitational masses of neutrons and to test the equivalence principle in the quantum regime. As one of the principal neutron imagers, we fabricated a sensor with a sandwich configuration, named 10B-INTPIX4-sw, and tested its response to ultra-cold neutrons at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). We observed simultaneous events on both sandwiching sensors without significant loss of detection efficiency. The efficiency was evaluated to be about 16%, relative to the 10B/ZnS reference detector. The coincidence condition reduces its efficiency by a factor of about 3.

The upcoming UCNProBe experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory will measure the $\beta$-decay rate of free neutrons with different systematic uncertainties than previous beam-based neutron lifetime experiments. We have developed a new $^{10}$B-coated YAP:Ce scintillator whose properties are presented. The advantage of the YAP:Ce scintillator is its high Fermi potential, which reduces the probability for upscattering of ultracold neutrons, and its short decay time, which is important at high counting rates. Birks' coefficient of YAP:Ce was measured to be ($5.56^{+0.05}_{-0.30})\times 10^{-4}$ cm/MeV and light losses due to 120 nm of $^{10}$B-coating to be about 60%. The loss of light from YAP:Ce due to transmission through deuterated polystyrene scintillator was about 50%. The efficiency for counting neutrons that are captured on the $^{10}$B coating is (86.82 $\pm$ 2.61)%. Measurement with ultracold neutrons showed that YAP:Ce crystal counted 8% to 28% more UCNs compared to ZnS screen. This may be due to an uneven coating of $^{10}$B on the rough surface.

Although BiFeO$_3$ is one of the most studied multiferroic materials, recent magnetization and neutron scattering studies have revealed a new magnetic phase in this compound - the transverse conical phase. To study the collective spin excitations of this phase, we performed THz spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 17 T at and above room temperature. We observed five spin-wave branches in the magnetic phase with long wavelength conical modulation. Using a numerical spin dynamics model we found two kinds of excitations with magnetic moments oscillating either along or perpendicular to the static fields. Remarkably, we detected strong directional dichroism, an optical manifestation of the magnetoelectric effect, for two spin-wave modes of the conical phase. According to our experiments, the stability of the conical state is sensitive to the magnetic field history and it can become (meta)stable at or close to zero magnetic field, which may allow exploiting its magnetoelectric properties at room temperature.

In positive muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu^+$SR) spectroscopy, positive muons ($\mu^+$) implanted into solid oxides are conventionally treated as immobile spin-probes at interstitial sites below room temperature. This is because each $\mu^+$ is thought to be tightly bound to an oxygen atom in the host lattice to form a muonic analogue of the hydroxy group. On the basis of this concept, anomalies in $\mu^+$SR spectra observed in oxides have been attributed in most cases to the intrinsic properties of host materials. On the other hand, global $\mu^+$ diffusion with an activation energy of $\sim$0.1~eV has been reported in some chemically-substituted perovskite oxides at cryogenic temperatures, although the reason for the small activation energy despite the formation of the strong O$\mu$ bond has not yet been quantitatively understood. In this study, we investigated interstitial $\mu^+$ diffusion in the perovskite oxide lattice using KTaO$_3$ cubic perovskite as a model system. We used the $\mu^+$SR method and density functional theory calculations along with the harmonic transition state theory to study this phenomenon both experimentally and theoretically. Experimental activation energies for global $\mu^+$ diffusion obtained below room temperature were less than a quarter of the calculated classical potential barrier height for a bottleneck $\mu^+$ transfer path. The reduction in the effective barrier height could be explained by the harmonic transition state theory with a zero-point energy correction; a significant difference in zero-point energies for $\mu^+$ at the positions in the O$\mu$ bonding equilibrium state and a bond-breaking transition state was the primary cause of the reduction. This suggests that the assumption of immobile $\mu^+$ in solid oxides is not always satisfied since such a significant decrease in diffusion barrier height can also occur in other oxides., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

A study of the dead layer thickness and quenching factor of a plastic scintillator for use in ultracold neutron (UCN) experiments is described. Alpha spectroscopy was used to determine the thickness of a thin surface dead layer, and the relative light outputs from the decay of $^{241}$Am and Compton scattering of electrons were used to extract the quenching parameter. With these characteristics of the material known, the light yield of the scintillator can be calculated. The ability to make these scintillators deuterated, accompanied by its relatively thin dead layer, make it ideal for use in UCN experiment, where the light yield of decay electrons and alphas from neutron capture are critical for counting events.

Fundamental neutron physics, combining precision measurements and theory, probes particle physics at short range with reach well beyond the highest energies probed by the LHC. Significant US efforts are underway that will probe BSM CP violation with orders of magnitude more sensitivity, provide new data on the Cabibbo anomaly, more precisely measure the neutron lifetime and decay, and explore hadronic parity violation. World-leading results from the US Fundamental Neutron Physics community since the last Long Range Plan, include the world's most precise measurement of the neutron lifetime from UCN$\tau$, the final results on the beta-asymmetry from UCNA and new results on hadronic parity violation from the NPDGamma and n-${^3}$He runs at the FNPB (Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline), precision measurement of the radiative neutron decay mode and n-${}^4$He at NIST. US leadership and discovery potential are ensured by the development of new high-impact experiments including BL3, Nab, LANL nEDM and nEDM@SNS. On the theory side, the last few years have seen results for the neutron EDM from the QCD $\theta$ term, a factor of two reduction in the uncertainty for inner radiative corrections in beta-decay which impacts CKM unitarity, and progress on {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure for medium-mass and heavy nuclei which can eventually improve the connection between nuclear and nucleon EDMs. In order to maintain this exciting program and capitalize on past investments while also pursuing new ideas and building US leadership in new areas, the Fundamental Neutron Physics community has identified a number of priorities and opportunities for our sub-field covering the time-frame of the last Long Range Plan (LRP) under development. This whitepaper presents the research priorities decided on by attendees of the 2022 Town Meeting for Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons and Neutrinos, which took place December 13-15, 2022 in Chapel Hill, NC, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 275 scientists registered for the meeting. The whitepaper makes a number of explicit recommendations and justifies them in detail.

Magnesium hydride has great potential as a solid hydrogen (H) storage material because of its high H storage capacity of 7.6 wt%. However, its slow hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics and the high temperature of 300 $^\circ$C required for decomposition are major obstacles to small-scale applications such as automobiles. The local electronic structure of interstitial H in MgH$_2$ is an important fundamental knowledge in solving this problem, which has been studied mainly based on density functional theory (DFT). However, few experimental studies have been performed to assess the results of DFT calculations. We have therefore introduced muon (Mu) as pseudo-H into MgH$_2$ and investigated the corresponding interstitial H states by analyzing their electronic and dynamical properties in detail. As a result, we observed multiple Mu states similar to those observed in wide-gap oxides, and found that their electronic states can be attributed to relaxed-excited states associated with donor/acceptor levels predicted by the recently proposed "ambipolarity model". This provides an indirect support for the DFT calculations on which the model is based via the donor/acceptor levels. An important implication of the muon results for improved hydrogen kinetics is that dehydrogenation, serving as a $reduction$ for hydrides, stabilizes the interstitial H$^-$ state., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

High energy physics aims to understand the fundamental laws of particles and their interactions at both the largest and smallest scales of the universe. This typically means probing very high energies or large distances or using high-intensity beams, which often requires large-scale experiments. A complementary approach is offered through high-precision measurements in small- and mid-scale size experiments, often at lower energies. The field of such high-precision experiments has seen tremendous progress and importance for particle physics for at least two reasons. First, they exploit synergies to adjacent areas of particle physics and benefit by many recent advances in experimental techniques. Together with intensified phenomenological explorations, these advances led to the realization that challenges associated with weak couplings or the expected suppression factors from the mass scale of new physics can be overcome with such methods. Second, many of these measurements add a new set of particle physics phenomena and observables that can be reached compared to the more conventional methodologies using high energies. Combining high-precision, smaller-scale measurements with the large-scale efforts therefore casts a wider and tighter net for possible effects originating from physics beyond the Standard Model. This report presents a broad set of small-scale research projects that could provide key new precision measurements in the areas of electric dipole moments, magnetic dipole moments, fermion flavor violation, tests of spacetime symmetries, and tests with gravity. The growing impact of these high-precision studies in high energy physics and the complementary input they provide compared to large-scale efforts warrants strong support over the next decades. The neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment that is currently being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) will use ultracold neutrons (UCN) and Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields to search for a nEDM. In this paper, we present measurements of UCN storage and UCN transport performed during the commissioning of a new beamline at the LANL UCN source and demonstrate a sufficient number of stored polarized UCN to achieve a statistical uncertainty of $\delta d_n = 2\times 10^{-27}$~$e\cdot\text{cm}$ in 5 calendar years of running. We also present an analytical model describing data that provides a simple parameterization of the input UCN energy spectrum on the new beamline., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Electroless nickel plating is an established industrial process that provides a robust and relatively low-cost coating suitable for transporting and storing ultracold neutrons (UCN). Using roughness measurements and UCN-storage experiments we characterized UCN guides made from polished aluminum or stainless-steel tubes plated by several vendors. All electroless nickel platings were similarly suited for UCN storage with an average loss probability per wall bounce of $2.8\cdot10^{-4}$ to $4.1\cdot10^{-4}$ for energies between 90 neV and 190 neV, or a ratio of imaginary to real Fermi potential $\eta$ of $1.7\cdot10^{-4}$ to $3.3\cdot10^{-4}$. Measurements at different elevations indicate that the energy dependence of UCN losses is well described by the imaginary Fermi potential. Some special considerations are required to avoid an increase in surface roughness during the plating process and hence a reduction in UCN transmission. Increased roughness had only a minor impact on storage properties. Based on these findings we chose a vendor to plate the UCN-production vessel that will contain the superfluid-helium converter for the new TRIUMF UltraCold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) source, achieving acceptable UCN-storage properties with ${\eta=3.5(5)\cdot10^{-4}}$., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The past two decades have yielded several new measurements and reanalyses of older measurements of the neutron lifetime. These have led to a 4.4 standard deviation discrepancy between the most precise measurements of the neutron decay rate producing protons in cold neutron beams and the lifetime measured in neutron storage experiments. Measurements using different techniques are important for investigating whether there are unidentified systematic effects in any of the measurements. In this paper we report a new measurement using the Los Alamos asymmetric magneto-gravitational trap where the surviving neutrons are counted external to the trap using the fill and dump method. The new measurement gives a free neutron lifetime of . Although this measurement is not as precise, it is in statistical agreement with previous results using in situ counting in the same apparatus.

We report the magnetic field dependence of the THz absorption and non-reciprocal directional dichroism spectra of BiFeO$_3$ measured on the three principal crystal cuts for fields applied along the three principal directions of each cut. From the systematic study of the light polarization dependence we deduced the optical selection rules of the spin-wave excitations. Our THz data, combined with small-angle neutron scattering results showed that i) an in-plane magnetic field rotates the $\mathbf{q}$ vectors of the cycloids perpendicular to the magnetic field, and ii) the selection rules are mostly determined by the orientation of the $\mathbf{q}$ vector with respect to the electromagnetic fields. We observed a magnetic field history dependent change in the strength and the frequency of the spin-wave modes, which we attributed to the change of the orientation and the length of the cycloidal $\mathbf{q}$ vector, respectively. Finally, we compared our experimental data with the results of linear spin-wave theory that reproduces the magnetic field dependence of the spin-wave frequencies and most of the selection rules, from which we identified the spin-polarization coupling terms relevant for the optical magnetoelectric effect.

We report an improved measurement of the free neutron lifetime $\tau_{n}$ using the UCN$\tau$ apparatus at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. We counted a total of approximately $38\times10^{6}$ surviving ultracold neutrons (UCN) after storing in UCN$\tau$'s magneto-gravitational trap over two data acquisition campaigns in 2017 and 2018. We extract $\tau_{n}$ from three blinded, independent analyses by both pairing long and short storage-time runs to find a set of replicate $\tau_{n}$ measurements and by performing a global likelihood fit to all data while self-consistently incorporating the $\beta$-decay lifetime. Both techniques achieve consistent results and find a value $\tau_{n}=877.75\pm0.28_{\text{ stat}}+0.22/-0.16_{\text{ syst}}$~s. With this sensitivity, neutron lifetime experiments now directly address the impact of recent refinements in our understanding of the standard model for neutron decay., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

We report results from a study on electrical breakdown in liquid helium using near-uniform-field stainless steel electrodes with a stressed area of $\sim$0.725 cm$^2$. The distribution of the breakdown field is obtained for temperatures between 1.7 K and 4.0 K, pressures between the saturated vapor pressure and 626 Torr, and with electrodes of different surface polishes. A data-based approach for determining the electrode-surface-area scaling of the breakdown field is presented. The dependence of the breakdown probability on the field strength as extracted from the breakdown field distribution data is used to show that breakdown is a surface phenomenon closely correlated with Fowler-Nordheim field emission from asperities on the cathode. We show that the results from this analysis provides an explanation for the supposed electrode gap-size effect and also allows for a determination of the breakdown-field distribution for arbitrary shaped electrodes. Most importantly, the analysis method presented in this work can be extended to other noble liquids to explore the dependencies for electrical breakdown in those media.

In this paper we report studies of the Fermi potential and loss per bounce of ultracold neutron (UCN) on a deuterated scintillator (Eljen-299-02D). These UCN properties of the scintillator enables a wide variety of applications in fundamental neutron research., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

As a new method to determine the resonance frequency, Rabi-oscillation spectroscopy has been developed. In contrast to the conventional spectroscopy which draws the resonance curve, Rabi-oscillation spectroscopy fits the time evolution of the Rabi oscillation. By selecting the optimized frequency, it is shown that the precision is twice as good as the conventional spectroscopy with a frequency sweep. Furthermore, the data under different conditions can be treated in a unified manner, allowing more efficient measurements for systems consisting of a limited number of short-lived particles produced by accelerators such as muons. We have developed a fitting function that takes into account the spatial distribution of muonium and the spatial distribution of the microwave intensity to apply the new method to ground-state muonium hyperfine structure measurements at zero field. This was applied to the actual measurement data and the resonance frequencies were determined under various conditions. The result of our analysis gives $\nu_{\rm HFS}=4\ 463\ 301.61 \pm 0.71\ {\rm kHz}$, which is the world's highest precision under zero field conditions., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The dependence on applied electric field ($0 - 40$ kV/cm) of the scintillation light produced by fast electrons and $\alpha$ particles stopped in liquid helium in the temperature range of 0.44 K to 3.12 K is reported. For both types of particles, the reduction in the intensity of the scintillation signal due to the applied field exhibits an apparent temperature dependence. Using an approximate solution of the Debye-Smoluchowski equation, we show that the apparent temperature dependence for electrons can be explained by the time required for geminate pairs to recombine relative to the detector signal integration time. This finding indicates that the spatial distribution of secondary electrons with respect to their geminate partners possesses a heavy, non-Gaussian tail at larger separations, and has a dependence on the energy of the primary ionization electron. We discuss the potential application of this result to pulse shape analysis for particle detection and discrimination.

The Ultracold Neutron Asymmetry (UCNA) experiment was designed to measure the $\beta$-decay asymmetry parameter, $A_0$, for free neutron decay. In the experiment, polarized ultracold neutrons are transported into a decay trap, and their $\beta$-decay electrons are detected with $\approx 4\pi$ acceptance into two detector packages which provide position and energy reconstruction. The experiment also has sensitivity to $b_{n}$, the Fierz interference term in the neutron $\beta$-decay rate. In this work, we determine $b_{n}$ from the energy dependence of $A_0$ using the data taken during the UCNA 2011-2013 run. In addition, we present the same type of analysis using the earlier 2010 $A$ dataset. Motivated by improved statistics and comparable systematic errors compared to the 2010 data-taking run, we present a new $b_{n}$ measurement using the weighted average of our asymmetry dataset fits, to obtain $b_{n} = 0.066 \pm 0.041_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.024_{\text{syst}}$ which corresponds to a limit of $-0.012 < b_{n} < 0.144$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. The hyperfine features and thermal stability of a muonium (Mu)-related paramagnetic center were investigated in the SrTiO$_3$ perovskite titanate via muon spin rotation spectroscopy. The hyperfine coupling tensor of the paramagnetic center was found to have prominent dipolar characteristics, indicating that the electron spin density is dominantly distributed on a Ti site to form a small polaron near an ionized Mu$^+$ donor. Based on a hydrogen-Mu analogy, interstitial hydrogen is also expected to form such a polaronic center in the dilute doping limit. The small activation energy of 30(3) meV found for the thermal dissociation of the Mu$^+$-polaron complex suggests that the strain energy required to distort the lattice is comparable to the electronic energy gained by localizing the electron., Comment: The following article has been accepted by Applied Physics Letters. We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments in Ca2Y2Cu5O10 and map out the full one magnon dispersion which extends up to a record value of 53 meV for frustrated ferromagnetic (FM) edge-sharing CuO2 chain (FFESC) cuprates. A homogeneous spin-1/2 chain model with a FM nearest-neighbor (NN), an antiferromagnetic (AFM) next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) inchain, and two diagonal AFM interchain couplings (ICs) analyzed within linear spin-wave theory (LSWT) reproduces well the observed strong dispersion along the chains and a weak one perpendicularly. The ratio R=|J_{a2}/J_{a1}| of the FM NN and the AFM NNN couplings is found as ~0.23, close to the critical point Rc=1/4 which separates ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically correlated spiral magnetic ground states in single chains, whereas Rc>0.25 for coupled chains is considerably upshifted even for relatively weak IC. Although the measured dispersion can be described by homogeneous LSWT, the scattering intensity appears to be considerably reduced at ~11.5 and ~28 meV. The gap-like feature at 11.5 meV is attributed to magnon-phonon coupling whereas based on DMRG simulations of the dynamical structure factor the gap at 28 meV is considered to stem partly from quantum effects due to the AFM IC. Another contribution is ascribed to the intrinsic superstructure from the distorting incommensurate pattern of CaY cationic chains adjacent to the CuO2 ones. It gives rise to non-equivalent CuO4 units and Cu-O-Cu bond angles Phi and a resulting distribution of all exchange integrals. The J's fitted by homogeneous LSWT are regarded as average values. The record value of the FM NN integral J1=24 meV among FFESC cuprates can be explained by a non-universal Phi (not 90 deg.) and Cu-O bond length dependent anisotropic mean direct FM Cu-O exchange K_{pd}~120 meV. Enhanced K_{pd} values are also needed to compensate a significant AFM J_{dd} > ~6 meV., Comment: 36 pages

A cryogenic apparatus is described that enables a new experiment, nEDM@SNS, with a major improvement in sensitivity compared to the existing limit in the search for a neutron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM). It uses superfluid $^4$He to produce a high density of Ultra-Cold Neutrons (UCN) which are contained in a suitably coated pair of measurement cells. The experiment, to be operated at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, uses polarized $^3$He from an Atomic Beam Source injected into the superfluid $^4$He and transported to the measurement cells as a co-magnetometer. The superfluid $^4$He is also used as an insulating medium allowing significantly higher electric fields, compared to previous experiments, to be maintained across the measurement cells. These features provide an ultimate statistical uncertainty for the EDM of $2-3\times 10^{-28}$ e-cm, with anticipated systematic uncertainties below this level.

The physics model of a next-generation spallation-driven high-current ultracold neutron (UCN) source capable of delivering an extracted UCN rate of around an-order-of-magnitude higher than the strongest proposed sources, and around three-orders-of-magnitude higher than existing sources, is presented. This UCN-current-optimized source would dramatically improve cutting-edge UCN measurements that are currently statistically limited. A novel "Inverse Geometry" design is used with 40 L of superfluid $^4$He (He-II), which acts as a converter of cold neutrons (CNs) to UCNs, cooled with state-of-the-art sub-cooled cryogenic technology to $\sim$1.6 K. Our design is optimized for a 100 W maximum heat load constraint on the He-II and its vessel. In our geometry, the spallation target is wrapped symmetrically around the UCN converter to permit raster scanning the proton beam over a relatively large volume of tungsten spallation target to reduce the demand on the cooling requirements, which makes it reasonable to assume that water edge-cooling only is sufficient. Our design is refined in several steps to reach $P_{UCN}=2.1\times10^9\,/$s under our other restriction of 1 MW maximum available proton beam power. We then study effects of the He-II scattering kernel as well as reductions in $P_{UCN}$ due to pressurization to reach $P_{UCN}=1.8\times10^9\,/$s. Finally, we provide a design for the UCN extraction system that takes into account the required He-II heat transport properties and implementation of a He-II containment foil that allows UCN transmission. We estimate a total useful UCN current from our source of $R_{use}=5\times10^8\,/$s from a 18 cm diameter guide 5 m from the source. Under a conservative "no return" approximation, this rate can produce an extracted density of $>1\times10^4\,/$cm$^3$ in $<$1000~L external experimental volumes with a $^{58}$Ni (335 neV) cut-off potential., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physics

The UCNA experiment was designed to measure the neutron $\beta$-asymmetry parameter $A_0$ using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). UCN produced via downscattering in solid deuterium were polarized via transport through a 7 T magnetic field, and then directed to a 1 T solenoidal electron spectrometer, where the decay electrons were detected in electron detector packages located on the two ends of the spectrometer. A value for $A_0$ was then extracted from the asymmetry in the numbers of counts in the two detector packages. We summarize all of the results from the UCNA experiment, obtained during run periods in 2007, 2008--2009, 2010, and 2011--2013, which ultimately culminated in a 0.67\% precision result for $A_0$., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, to appear in proceedings of the International Workshop on Particle Physics at Neutron Sources 2018

Novel experimental techniques are required to make the next big leap in neutron electric dipole moment experimental sensitivity, both in terms of statistics and systematic error control. The nEDM experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source (nEDM@SNS) will implement the scheme of Golub & Lamoreaux [Phys. Rep., 237, 1 (1994)]. The unique properties of combining polarized ultracold neutrons, polarized $^3$He, and superfluid $^4$He will be exploited to provide a sensitivity to $\sim 10^{-28}\,e{\rm \,\cdot\, cm}$. Our cryogenic apparatus will deploy two small ($3\,{\rm L}$) measurement cells with a high density of ultracold neutrons produced and spin analyzed in situ. The electric field strength, precession time, magnetic shielding, and detected UCN number will all be enhanced compared to previous room temperature Ramsey measurements. Our $^3$He co-magnetometer offers unique control of systematic effects, in particular the Bloch-Siegert induced false EDM. Furthermore, there will be two distinct measurement modes: free precession and dressed spin. This will provide an important self-check of our results. Following five years of "critical component demonstration," our collaboration transitioned to a "large scale integration" phase in 2018. A new boron-coated CCD camera is described for direct detection of ultracold neutrons (UCN) through the capture reactions $^{10}$B (n,$\alpha$0$\gamma$)$^7$Li (6%) and $^{10}$B(n,$\alpha$1$\gamma$)$^7$Li (94%). The experiments, which extend earlier works using a boron-coated ZnS:Ag scintillator, are based on direct detections of the neutron-capture byproducts in silicon. The high position resolution, energy resolution and particle ID performance of a scientific CCD allows for observation and identification of all the byproducts $\alpha$, $^7$Li and $\gamma$ (electron recoils). A signal-to-noise improvement on the order of 10$^4$ over the indirect method has been achieved. Sub-pixel position resolution of a few microns is demonstrated. The technology can also be used to build UCN detectors with an area on the order of 1 m$^2$. The combination of micrometer scale spatial resolution, few electrons ionization thresholds and large area paves the way to new research avenues including quantum physics of UCN and high-resolution neutron imaging and spectroscopy., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Neutron beta decay is one of the most fundamental processes in nuclear physics and provides sensitive means to uncover the details of the weak interaction. Neutron beta decay can evaluate the ratio of axial-vector to vector coupling constants in the standard model, $\lambda = g_A / g_V$, through multiple decay correlations. The Nab experiment will carry out measurements of the electron-neutrino correlation parameter $a$ with a precision of $\delta a / a = 10^{-3}$ and the Fierz interference term $b$ to $\delta b = 3\times10^{-3}$ in unpolarized free neutron beta decay. These results, along with a more precise measurement of the neutron lifetime, aim to deliver an independent determination of the ratio $\lambda$ with a precision of $\delta \lambda / \lambda = 0.03\%$ that will allow an evaluation of $V_{ud}$ and sensitively test CKM unitarity, independent of nuclear models. Nab utilizes a novel, long asymmetric spectrometer that guides the decay electron and proton to two large area silicon detectors in order to precisely determine the electron energy and an estimation of the proton momentum from the proton time of flight. The Nab spectrometer is being commissioned at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Lab.
