イスラーム世界の各地には、神から授けられた特別な力をもつと考えられている人々が存在する。地域によって呼称の異なるこうした人々は、これまでのイスラーム研究で「聖者(saint)」と呼ばれてきた。「聖者」はその敬虔さゆえに神から恩寵を授けられていると考えられ、人々は彼らを信仰したりその墓を参詣したりする。「聖者」という語はもともと、キリスト教において、中央の権威から「列聖」によって公式に承認された人々を指す語である。この語を、イスラームの諸社会に差異を無視して用いることの妥当性が、イスラーム研究において議論されてきた。本論では、これまでのイスラーム研究における「聖者」概念の妥当性を、西アフリカのイスラーム学術都市ジェンネのローカルな文脈に即して検討する。ジェンネにはalfa と呼ばれる特別な力をもつと考えられている人々がいる。alfa の活動はコーラン学校の教師、薬やお守りづくり、卜占、人生儀礼の祈祷など多岐にわたり、住民の日常生活に欠かせない役割を担う。こうしたalfaの役割は、従来の研究から導き出される「聖者」のそれと一致する部分をもちながらも、より日常的で「現世的」である。alfa とそうでない者を分けるのは、聖俗の区分ではなく、「よきムスリムである」ことの相対的な程度の差である。ジェンネのalfa の位置づけは、これまでの研究で「聖者」と呼ばれてきた人々をそうたらしめるローカルな文脈を、より詳細に検討していくことの重要性を示唆している。, In the many parts of Islamic world there are people who are considered to have special power given by Allah. Muslims respect and call them in their local appellations. Studies of Islamic “Saints” have enclosed such people as “Saints” irrespective of their local variation. As the term of “Saints” has its origin in the Christianity, validity of its appropriation to Islamic practices has been discussed. This paper presents a reconsideration of the term and concept of Islamic Saints with a case of alfa in Djenné, West Africa. Djenné is one of islamic study centers in Sub-Saharan Africa and there are many people who are called alfa. Alfas being considered to have special power given by Allah, they play important role in people’s every-day life and life cycle as teacher of Koranic school, local Islamic leader, maker of talisman, predictor, traditional medical doctor and so on. We can find some common aspects to other Islamic “saints” in their roles in the society of Djenné. But their relation with people seems more “secular.” Such roles and activities of alfa in Djnné rouse the importance of focusing on the local context in the studies and discussion on “Islamic Saints.”
