1. Towards robust detection of entangled two-photon absorption

Abstract

Over the last 50 years entangled photon pairs have received attention for use in lowering the flux in two-photon absorption imaging and spectroscopy. Despite this, evidence for entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) effects remain highly debated, especially at low-fluxes. Here, we structure the transverse spatial correlations of entangled photon pairs to evidence signs of ETPA at room-temperature in organic and inorganic chromophores, in the low-flux regime. We demonstrate our scheme to be robust to common artifacts that have previously hampered detection of ETPA such as linear absorption and background fluorescence, and show that ETPA scales with transverse correlation area and chromophore two-photon cross-sections. 2. Room-temperature efficient single-photon generation from CdSe/ZnS nanoplateletes

Abstract

In the search for materials for quantum information science applications, colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) have emerged as a highly promising new class of materials due to their interesting optical properties, such as narrow emission linewidth and fast photoluminescence (PL) lifetimes at room temperature. So far only few works focused on the quantum properties of their emission, however, NPLs, with their atomic-scale thickness and one-dimensional quantum confinement, are promising candidates for single-photon sources. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature single-photon emission from core/shell CdSe/ZnS NPLs, which feature 8$x$20 nm$^2$ surface area and 1 nm shell. The limited surface area ensures effective Auger non-radiative recombination, resulting in highly efficient single-photon generation with values of photon purity as low as $g^{(2)}(\tau)=0.04$. The observed long-period blinking and bleaching, typical of such thin shells, can be easily reduced by increasing the shell thickness. This work establishes NPLs as new single-photon sources very well suited for integration into quantum photonic systems.

Abstract

Transferring the nanocrystals (NCs) from the laboratory environment toward practical applications has raised new challenges. In the case of NCs for display and lightning, the focus was on reduced Auger recombination and maintaining luminescence at high temperatures. When it comes to infrared sensing, narrow band gap materials are required and HgTe appears as the most spectrally tunable platform. Its low-temperature synthesis reduces the growth energy cost yet also favors sintering. As a result, once coupled to a read-out circuit, the Joule effect aggregates the particles leading to a poorly defined optical edge and dramatically large dark current. Here, we demonstrate that CdS shells bring the expected thermal stability (no redshift upon annealing, reduced tendency to form amalgams and preservation of photoconduction after an atomic layer deposition process). The peculiar electronic structure of these confined particles is unveiled using k.p self-consistent simulations showing a significant exciton biding energy at around 200 meV. Abstract

Semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals are excellent light emitters in terms of efficiency and spectral control. Integrating them with a metasurface would pave the way to ultrathin photoluminescent devices with reduced amount of active material and performing complex functionalities such as beam shaping or polarization control. To design such a metasurface, a quantitative model of the emitted power is needed. Here, we report the design, fabrication and characterization of a $\approx$ 300 nm thick light-emitting device combining a plasmonic metasurface with an ensemble of nanoplatelets. Abstract

Among materials produced as colloidal quantum dots (CQDs), HgTe has a special status being the only material covering the whole infrared range from the visible to the THz (0.7–100 µm). This unique property resulting from its electronic structure, combined with an air stability and a capacity for charge conduction has generated consistent and massive efforts to produce and improve HgTe CQDs over the past two decades. Meanwhile, HgTe CQDs offer an infrared platform more advanced than any other colloidal alternatives in the mid‐wave infrared regarding their integration into advanced photonic and optoelectronic applications. Here, the latest developments of HgTe CQDs relative to the material's growth, electron structure modelling, its integration into photonic structures and its transfer as the active material from single element devices toward complex sensors and infrared imagers are reviewed. Finally, a discussion about the potential of this material for industry, rising new challenges beyond economical and production considerations at low technological readiness level, relative to the material and device design, is also included. Abstract

As they have gained maturity, colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) have also expand the spectral range over of which they could be used for photonic and optoelectronic applications. In particular, the infrared use of NCs has become of utmost interest to develop cost‐effective alternatives to current technologies. It is then critical not to let the material dictate the light–matter interaction, which is why the coupling of NCs to photonic cavities has been proposed. For infrared NCs, this approach has first been devoted to the control of absorption with in mind the increase of the signal magnitude for detectors. A Lot of efforts have been focused on the use of metallic metasurfaces. However, these generate significant optical losses and yield low quality factor. Here, this study rather focus on the coupling of infrared NCs to a dielectric mirror cavity. HgTe/CdS core‐shell NCs are used and integrated into a cavity made of aperiodic dielectric mirrors. The effect of the substrate is systematically study on spectral linewidth, carrier dynamic, and emission directivity. The cavity is shown to narrow the PL by a factor 10, while focusing the emission over a 12° angle. Monitoring the power dependence of the emission, this study shows that the cavity leads to 250 K increase in the effective electronic temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Manipulating the spontaneous emission of a fluorescent emitter can be achieved by placing the emitter in a nanostructured environment. A privileged spot is occupied by plasmonic structures that provide a strong confinement of the electromagnetic field, which results in an enhancement of the emitter-environment interaction. While plasmonic nanostructures have been widely exploited to control the emission properties of single photon emitters, performing the coupling between quantum emitters with plasmons poses a huge challenge. In this Letter we report on a first crucial step towards this goal by the observation of correlated emission between a single CdSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dot exhibiting single photon statistics and a fluorescent nanobead located micrometers apart. This is accomplished by coupling both emitters to a silver nanowire. Single-plasmons are created on the latter from the quantum dot, and transfer energy to excite in turn the fluorescent nanobead., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Narrow bandgap nanocrystals (NCs) are now used as infrared light absorbers, making them competitors to epitaxially grown semiconductors. However, these two types of materials could benefit from one another. While bulk materials are more effective in transporting carriers and give a high degree of doping tunability, NCs offer a larger spectral tunability without lattice-matching constraints. Here, we investigate the potential of sensitizing InGaAs in the mid-wave infrared throughout the intraband transition of self-doped HgSe NCs. Our device geometry enables the design of a photodiode remaining mostly unreported for intraband-absorbing NCs. Finally, this strategy allows for more effective cooling and preserves the detectivity above 108 Jones up to 200 K, making it closer to cryo-free operation for mid-infrared NC-based sensors. Abstract

Among colloidal nanocrystals, 2D nanoplatelets offer a unique set of properties with exceptionally narrow luminescence and low lasing thresholds. Furthermore, their anisotropic shape expands the playground for the complex design of heterostructures where spectra but also scattering rates can be engineered. A challenge that still remains is to combine shell growth which makes NPLs stable, with spectral tunability. Indeed, most reported shelled nanoplatelets end up being red emitters due to a loss of quantum confinement. Here, the combination of both lateral and in‐plane confinements within a single heterostructure is explored. A CdS/CdSe/CdS/CdZnS core–crown–crown shell structure that enables yellow emission is grown and that is responsive to a large range of excitation including visible photons, X‐ray photons, electron beams, and electrical excitations. k.p simulations predict that emission tunability of up to several 100 s of meV can be obtained in ideal structures. This material also displays stimulated emission resulting from bi‐exciton emission with a low threshold. Once integrated into an LED stack, this material is compatible with sub‐bandgap excitation and exhibits high luminance. 20. Hole Relaxation Bottlenecks in CdSe/CdTe/CdSe Lateral Heterostructures Lead to Bicolor Emission

Abstract

Concentric lateral CdSe/CdTe/CdSe heterostructures show bicolor photoluminescence from both a red charge transfer band of the CdSe/CdTe interface and a green fluorescence from CdSe. This work uses visible and near-infrared transient spectroscopy measurements to demonstrate that the deviation from Kasha’s rule arises from a hole relaxation bottleneck from CdSe to CdTe. Hole transfer can take up to 1 ns, which permits radiative relaxation of excitons remaining in CdSe. Simulations indicate that the hole relaxation bottleneck arises due to the sparse density of states and poor spatial overlap of hole states at energies near the CdSe band edge. The divergent kinetics of transfer for band edge and hot holes is exploited to vary the ratio of green and red photoluminescence with excitation wavelength, providing another knob to control emission color. These findings support the use of lateralheterojunctions as a method for slowing carrier relaxation in two-dimensional materials.

Abstract

Colloidal nanoplatelets of HgSe and HgTe prepared indirectly through cation exchange reactions can transfer many of the advantageous properties of atomically precise, 2D cadmium chalcogenides to the near‐infrared (NIR) spectral window. In this work, HgSe and HgTe nanoplatelets are studied to understand their fundamental photophysical properties, particularly those areas of similarity and difference from cadmium‐based NPLs, and to examine their potential as optical gain media. Similar to cadmium chalcogenide NPLs, low‐temperature photoluminescence of HgTe NPLs displays two‐color emission that depends on temperature, sample, fluence, excitation frequency, and irradiation time. Both HgTe and HgSe show nanosecond emission dynamics at temperatures as low as 2.5 K, with no indication that bright‐dark excitonic splitting governs the low‐temperature photoluminescence. Collectively, experimental data is most consistent with emission from a negative trion state at low temperature. Although the mercury chalcogenide nanoplatelets are shown to have broadened optical resonances compared to the cadmium chalcogenides from which they are derived, they retain slow Auger recombination and can display low‐threshold amplified spontaneous emission in the NIR spectral window. Optical pumping thresholds for HgTe NPLs are observed as low as 4.4 µJ cm−2 and highlight the potential 2D nanoplatelets as gain medium in the near‐infrared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Intraband absorption in doped nanocrystals offers an interesting alternative to narrow band gap materials to explore mid infrared optoelectronic device designs. However, the performance of such device clearly lags behind the ones relying on intrinsic materials. Livache et al. have proposed a dye sensitized approach to overcome the limitations observed from intraband materials (high dark current, slow response, low activation energy), where the intraband absorber is coupled to an undoped material which takes care of the charge conduction. Here, we unveil the coupling between both materials using mid-infrared transient reflectivity (TR) measurement. We show that hybrid material displays a unique feature in the TR signal that we attribute to a charge transfer and for which the dynamic matches the hopping time. We then developed a strategy to enhance the photodetection performances of the hybrid material by coupling for the first time intraband absorption to a light resonator. The latter is used to enhance the absorption by a factor 4 and enables an increase of the operating temperature by 80 K compared to the reference device. The obtained device matches the performance of best devices relying on intraband absorption.

Abstract

International audience; Heterostructured two-dimensional (2D) colloidal nanoplatelets are a class of material that have attracted great interest for optoelectronic applications due to their high photoluminescence yield, atomically tunable thickness and ultralow lasing thresholds. Of particular interest are laterally heterostructured core-crown nanoplatelets with a type-II band alignment, where the in-plane spatial separation of carriers leads to indirect (or charge transfer) excitons with long lifetimes and bright, highly Stokes shifted emission. Despite this, little is known about the nature of the lowest energy exciton states responsible for emission in these materials. Here using polarization-controlled, steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, at temperatures down to 1.6 K and magnetic fields up to 30 T, we study the exciton fine structure and spin dynamics of archetypal type-II CdSe/CdTe core-crown nanoplatelets. Complemented by theoretical modelling and zero-field quantum beat measurements we find the bright-exciton fine structure consists of two linearly polarized states with a fine structure splitting  50 μeV and an indirect exciton Landé g-factor of 0.7. In addition, we show the exciton spin lifetime to be in the microsecond range with an unusual B-3 magnetic field dependence. The discovery of linearly polarized exciton states and emission highlights the potential for use of such materials in display and imaging applications without polarization filters. Furthermore, the small exciton fine structure splitting and a long spin lifetime are fundamental advantages when envisaging CdSe/CdTe nanoplatelets as elementary bricks for the next generation of quantum devices, particularly given their ease of fabrication.

Abstract

Among the colloidal quantum dots, 2D nanoplatelets present exceptionally narrow optical features. Rationalizing the design of heterostructures of these objects is of utmost interest; however, very little work has been focused on the investigation of their electronic properties. This work is organized into two main parts. In the first part, we use 1D solving of the Schrödinger equation to extract the effective masses for nanoplatelets (NPLs) of CdSe, CdS, and CdTe and the valence band offset for NPL core/shell of CdSe/CdS. In the second part, using the determined parameters, we quantize how the spectra of the CdSe/CdS heterostructure get affected by (i) the application of an electric field and (ii) by the presence of a dull interface.
