10. Stability of pargasite during ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism: a consequence of titanium and REE partitioning?

Abstract

Orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene-plagioclase needles and symplectite along the cleavage planes and grain boundaries of fluorine-bearing titanian-ferroan pargasite from the Highland Complex, Sri Lanka, are interpreted as evidence for dehydration melting at ultrahigh-temperature conditions. High Ti (up to 0.4 pfu) and F ([X.sub.F] up to 0.56) content in pargasite extends its stability to higher temperatures, and the composition indicates the dehydration melting reaction may take place at ultrahigh-temperatures (~950 [degrees]C) at a pressure around 10 kbar, close to peak metamorphic conditions. The increase of Ti content close to the grain boundaries and cleavage planes in pargasite indicates titanium partitioning from the melt during dehydration melting enhanced the stability of the mineral toward ultrahigh-temperature conditions. The REE content in the pargasite shows a similar behavior to that of titanium. The cores with no breakdown assemblage consist of low and flat REE concentrations with respect to the high and Eu-depleted rim. Clinopyroxene in symplectite and needle-shaped lamellae within the pargasite porphyroblasts have similar REE patterns with slightly low-concentrations relative to that of pargasite. In the breakdown assemblage, LREEs are partitioned mainly into plagioclase while the HREEs are partitioned into orthopyroxene. The REE enrichment in the pargasite rims signals their relative partitioning between pargasite rims and melt. Modeling of the partitioning of Ti and REEs associated with pargasite breakdown demonstrates that its stability is greatly enhanced at UHT conditions. This investigation implies that the stability of hydrous minerals such as amphibole can be extended to UHT conditions, and expands our knowledge of metamorphism in the lower crust. 11. Age (K-Ar phengite)--temperature--structure relations: a case study from the Ishigaki high-pressure schist belt, southern Ryukyu Arc, Japan

Abstract

The Ishigaki high-pressure schist belt in the southern Ryukyu Arc is correlated with the Suo high-pressure schist belt in southwest Japan. The former metamorphic sequence is composed mainly of basic and pelitic schists and is subdivided into three zones, the lower-grade zone A, the medium-grade zone B and the high-grade zone C, based on the mineral assemblages of the basic schists. The K-Ar phengite age gives 188-205 Ma for zone A, 196-206 Ma for zone B and 208-220 Ma for zone C, while the apparent [d.sub.002] spacing of carbonaceous materials is 3.590-3.437 [Angstrom], 3.415-3.390 [Angstrom] and 3.387-3.364 [Angstrom], respectively. The age-[d.sub.002] relationships suggest that the ages become older with increasing metamorphic temperature. This positive age-temperature relationship in the Ishigaki area contrasts with a negative relationship in the Nishiki area in the Suo belt. The two areas also display a contrasting thermal structure with the former area having an inverted metamorphic gradient and the latter displaying a normal thermal structure. These contrasting age-temperature--structure relationships in the metamorphic belt could be due to different tectonic styles relating to the exhumation of the metamorphic sequences. We suggest that the ages obtained are related directly to the ductile deformation history of the matrix phengite below the closure temperature (500 [degrees]C) during exhumation of the host rocks. The duration from the beginning of exhumation to the apparent resetting of the phengite K-Ar system was different between the two metamorphic sequences, and significantly longer in the Ishigaki than the Nishiki. Abstract

Dyke swarms traverse Neoproterozoic rocks in the Hawashiya region in the extreme northern part of the Eastern Desert of Egypt. They are a suite of basaltic andesite and andesite mafic dykes, and dacitic and rhyolitic felsic dykes. The mafic dyke suite is more abundant in the younger granites (577 [+ or -] 6 Ma) than in the older granitoids (614 Ma), in which the felsic dykes are the most common. The dyke swarms trend predominantly NE-SW, and the felsic dyke suite is older than the mafic dyke suite. Both dyke suites are calc-alkaline (alkaline dykes are rare) and are relatively poor in Ti[O.sub.2] and Nb but enriched in the incompatible elements and HFSE. The felsic dyke suite is enriched in REE and is strongly LREE fractionated relative to the mafic dyke suite. Although the Hawashiya dykes were emplaced at the end of the Neoproterozoic era in an extensional tectonic setting, they have geochemical characteristics that are consistent with a subduction-related regime. These chemical signatures were inherited from the lithospheric rocks that produced their host Hawashiya granitoids. The felsic dyke suite magma may be derived from crustal rocks (essential source component) by partial melting. The mafic dyke suite magma was generated from a lithospheric mantle and has undergone fractional crystallization of plagioclase, amphibole, clinopyroxene and magnetite, as documented by major and trace elements fractionation modelling. 14. K-Ar geochronology of a middle Miocene submarine volcano-plutonic complex in southwest Japan

Abstract

A volcano-plutonic complex in the Susa area, southwest Japan, consists of the Yamashima andesites, the Koyama gabbros and syn-plutonic porphyrite dykes derived from a common basaltic andesite magma. The complex is closely associated with middle Miocene turbidite deposits. The Yamashima andesites are composed mainly of basaltic andesite feeder dykes, massive submarine lavas with hyaloclastites, and their reworked deposits. The lavas and deposits immediately overlie turbidite deposits, indicating submarine volcanic activity. The Koyama gabbros formed hornfels by contact metamorphism of the surrounding turbidites and andesites. Highly purified clinopyroxene and plagioclase mineral separates from the Yamashima andesites were dated by a K-Ar method using an ultra-low blank K analysis procedure. Ages obtained from duplicate analyses are 16.5 [+ or -] 1.5, 15.2 [+ or -] 1.4, 15.8 [+ or -] 1.7, and 16.5 [+ or -] 2.0 Ma for clinopyroxene, and 14.2 [+ or -] 0.8, 15.2 [+ or -] 0.9, and 15.6 [+ or -] 0.9 Ma for plagioclase. The clinopyroxene and plagioclase data define a mineral isochron age of 14.7 [+ or -] 0.9 (1[sigma]) Ma with an initial [sup.40]Ar/[sup.36]Ar ratio of 297.3 [+ or -] 2.4 (1[sigma]), suggesting that clinopyroxene has no excess argon and can be reliably dated by K-Ar. Most of the groundmass ages are considerably younger (12.1 - 14.6) than the isochron age, perhaps due to argon loss during alteration. The gabbros give ages of 14.2 [+ or -] 0.3 and 14. [+ or -] 0.3 Ma for biotite, and 13.7 [+ or -] 0.3 and 13.7 [+ or -] 0.7 Ma for green hornblende. The porphyrite dyke yields an age of 12.5 [+ or -] 0.3 Ma for the groundmass, and the pelitic hornfels gives a biotite age of 14.8 [+ or -] 0.3 Ma. Our new K-Ar ages, together with previous studies, show that a series of geological events took place in the Susa area between 16 and 13 Ma. Conglomerates and sandstones were deposited in the beginning of marine transgression. Subsequent abrupt deepening led to deposition of a thick black shale unit, turbidite deposits and large-scale submarine channel-fill deposits. Coeval igneous activity formed the volcano-plutonic complex. The magmato-tectonic event was synchronous with the opening of the Japan Sea and the associated clockwise rotation of the southwest Japan arc sliver, recording a unique tectonic setting. 23. Thermal Regime of a Temperate Deep Lake and Its Response to Climate Change: Lake Kuttara, Japan

Abstract

A temperate deep lake, Lake Kuttara, Hokkaido, Japan (148 m deep at maximum) was completely frozen every winter in the 20th century. However, unfrozen conditions of the lake over winter occurred four times in the 21st century, which is probably due to global warming. In order to understand how thermal regime of the lake responds to climate change, its heat storage change was calculated by estimating heat budget of the lake and monitoring water temperature at the deepest point for September 2012–June 2016. As a result, temporal change of the heat storage from the heat budget was very consistent with that from the direct temperature measurement (determination coefficient R2 = 0.827). The 1978–2017 data at a meteorological station near Kuttara indicated that there are significant (less than 5% level) long-term trends for air temperature (0.024 °C/yr) and wind speed (−0.010 m/s/yr). A sensitivity analysis for the heat storage from the heat budget estimate and an estimate of return periods for mean air temperature in mid-winter allow us to conclude that the lake could be unfrozen once per about two year in a decade.

Abstract

The Ranomena ultramafic complex in NE Madagascar consists of layered gabbro, harzburgite, orthopyroxenite, clinopyroxenite, garnet websterite and chromitite-layered peridotite. This study of the Ranomena chromite chemistry aims to better understand the petrogenesis and palaeotectonic environment of the complex. The chromite from the Ranomena chromitite is unzoned/weakly zoned and has a Cr# (Cr/(Cr + Al)) of 0.59–0.69, a Mg# (Mg/(Fe + Mg)) of 0.37–0.44, and low Al2O3 (15–23 wt %) suggesting derivation from a supra-subduction zone arc setting. Calculation of parental melt composition suggests that the parental magma composition of the Ranomena chromitite was similar to that of a primitive tholeiitic basalt formed at a high degree of mantle melting, suggesting the parental melt composition was equivalent to that of an island-arc tholeiite (IAT). The parental magma of the Ranomena chromite had a FeO/MgO ratio of 0.9 to 1.8, suggesting arc derivation. The parental magma was Al- and Fe-rich, similar to a tholeiitic basaltic magma. The composition of orthopyroxene from the chromitite indicates a crystallization temperature range of 1250–1300°C at 1.0 GPa. The chemistry of the chromite in the Ranomena chromitite further suggests that the complex formed in a supra-subduction zone arc tectonic setting. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
