1. Consistent Strong Triadic Closure in Multilayer Networks

Abstract

Social network users are commonly connected to hundreds or even thousands of other users. However, these ties are not all of equal strength; for example, we often are connected to good friends or family members as well as acquaintances. Inferring the tie strengths is an essential task in social network analysis. Common approaches classify the ties into strong and weak edges based on the network topology using the strong triadic closure (STC). The STC states that if for three nodes, $\textit{A}$, $\textit{B}$, and $\textit{C}$, there are strong ties between $\textit{A}$ and $\textit{B}$, as well as $\textit{A}$ and $\textit{C}$, there has to be a (weak or strong) tie between $\textit{B}$ and $\textit{C}$. Moreover, a variant of the STC called STC+ allows adding new weak edges to obtain improved solutions. Recently, the focus of social network analysis has been shifting from single-layer to multilayer networks due to their ability to represent complex systems with multiple types of interactions or relationships in multiple social network platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, or X (formerly Twitter). However, straightforwardly applying the STC separately to each layer of multilayer networks usually leads to inconsistent labelings between layers. Avoiding such inconsistencies is essential as they contradict the idea that tie strengths represent underlying, consistent truths about the relationships between users. Therefore, we adapt the definitions of the STC and STC+ for multilayer networks and provide ILP formulations to solve the problems exactly. Solving the ILPs is computationally costly; hence, we additionally provide an efficient 2-approximation for the STC and a 6-approximation for the STC+ minimization variants. The experiments show that, unlike standard approaches, our new highly efficient algorithms lead to consistent strong/weak labelings of the multilayer network edges.

Abstract

Subgroups of direct products of finitely many finitely generated free groups form a natural class that plays an important role in geometric group theory. Its members include fundamental examples, such as the Stallings-Bieri groups. This raises the problem of understanding their geometric invariants. We prove that finitely presented subgroups of direct products of three free groups, as well as subgroups of finiteness type $\mathcal{F}_{n-1}$ in a direct product of $n$ free groups, have Dehn function bounded above by $N^9$. This gives a positive answer to a question of Dison within these important subclasses and provides new insights in the context of Bridson's conjecture that finitely presented subgroups of direct products of free groups have polynomially bounded Dehn function. We also give the first precise computation of a superquadratic Dehn function of a finitely presented subgroup of a direct product of finitely many free groups: we show that the Bridson-Dison group is a subgroup of a direct product of three free groups with Dehn function $N^4$. To prove our results we generalise techniques for "pushing fillings" into normal subgroups and define a new invariant for obtaining optimal lower bounds on Dehn functions., Comment: 77 pages, 4 figures

9. Online Drone Scheduling for Last-mile Delivery

Abstract

Delivering a parcel from the distribution hub to the customer's doorstep is called the \textit{last-mile delivery} step in delivery logistics. In this paper, we study a hybrid {\it truck-drones} model for the last-mile delivery step, in which a truck moves on a predefined path carrying parcels and drones deliver the parcels. We define the \textsc{online drone scheduling} problem, where the truck moves in a predefined path, and the customer's requests appear online during the truck's movement. The objective is to schedule a drone associated with every request to minimize the number of drones used subject to the battery budget of the drones and compatibility of the schedules. We propose a 3-competitive deterministic algorithm using the next-fit strategy and 2.7-competitive algorithms using the first-fit strategy for the problem with $O(\log n)$ worst-case time complexity per request, where $n$ is the maximum number of active requests at any time. We also introduce \textsc{online variable-size drone scheduling} problem (OVDS). Here, we know all the customer's requests in advance; however, the drones with different battery capacities appear online. The objective is to schedule customers' requests for drones to minimize the number of drones used. We propose a $(2\alpha + 1)$-competitive algorithm for the OVDS problem with total running time $O(n \log n)$ for $n$ customer requests, where $\alpha$ is the ratio of the maximum battery capacity to the minimum battery capacity of the drones. Finally, we address how to generate intervals corresponding to each customer request when there are discrete stopping points on the truck's route, from where the drone can fly and meet with the truck.

12. Black Hole Search in Dynamic Tori

Abstract

We investigate the black hole search problem by a set of mobile agents in a dynamic torus. Black hole is defined to be a dangerous stationary node which has the capability to destroy any number of incoming agents without leaving any trace of its existence. A torus of size $n\times m$ ($3\leq n \leq m$) is a collection of $n$ row rings and $m$ column rings, and the dynamicity is such that each ring is considered to be 1-interval connected, i.e., in other words at most one edge can be missing from each ring at any round. The parameters which define the efficiency of any black hole search algorithm are: the number of agents and the number of rounds (or \textit{time}) for termination. We consider two initial configurations of mobile agents: first, the agents are co-located and second, the agents are scattered. In each case, we establish lower and upper bounds on the number of agents and on the amount of time required to solve the black hole search problem.

16. Time-Constrained Continuous Subgraph Matching Using Temporal Information for Filtering and Backtracking

Abstract

Real-time analysis of graphs containing temporal information, such as social media streams, Q&A networks, and cyber data sources, plays an important role in various applications. Among them, detecting patterns is one of the fundamental graph analysis problems. In this paper, we study time-constrained continuous subgraph matching, which detects a pattern with a strict partial order on the edge set in real-time whenever a temporal data graph changes over time. We propose a new algorithm based on two novel techniques. First, we introduce a filtering technique called time-constrained matchable edge that uses temporal information for filtering with polynomial space. Second, we develop time-constrained pruning techniques that reduce the search space by pruning some of the parallel edges in backtracking, utilizing temporal information. Extensive experiments on real and synthetic datasets show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithm by up to two orders of magnitude in terms of query processing time.

20. Black Hole Search in Dynamic Cactus Graph

Abstract

We study the problem of black hole search by a set of mobile agents, where the underlying graph is a dynamic cactus. A black hole is a dangerous vertex in the graph that eliminates any visiting agent without leaving any trace behind. Key parameters that dictate the complexity of finding the black hole include: the number of agents required (termed as \textit{size}), the number of moves performed by the agents in order to determine the black hole location (termed as \textit{move}) and the \textit{time} (or round) taken to terminate. This problem has already been studied where the underlying graph is a dynamic ring \cite{di2021black}. In this paper, we extend the same problem to a dynamic cactus. We introduce two categories of dynamicity, but still the underlying graph needs to be connected: first, we examine the scenario where, at most, one dynamic edge can disappear or reappear at any round. Secondly, we consider the problem for at most $k$ dynamic edges. Abstract

The widespread adoption of the fifth generation (5G) of cellular networks has brought new opportunities for the development of localization-based services. High-accuracy positioning use cases and functionalities defined by the standards are drawing the interest of vertical industries. In the transition towards the deployment, this paper aims to provide an in-depth tutorial on 5G positioning, summarizing the evolutionary path that led to the standardization of cellular-based positioning, describing the localization elements in current and forthcoming releases of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard, and the major research trends. By providing fundamental notions on wireless localization, comprehensive definitions of measurements and architectures, examples of algorithms, and details on simulation approaches, this paper is intended to represent an exhaustive guide for researchers and practitioners. Our approach aims to merge practical aspects of enabled use cases and related requirements with theoretical methodologies and fundamental bounds, allowing to understand the trade-off between system complexity and achievable, i.e., tangible, benefits of 5G positioning services. 22. An Edge-Based Decomposition Framework for Temporal Networks

Abstract

A temporal network is a dynamic graph where every edge is assigned an integer time label that indicates at which discrete time step the edge is available. We consider the problem of hierarchically decomposing the network and introduce an edge-based decomposition framework that unifies the core and truss decompositions for temporal networks while allowing us to consider the network's temporal dimension. Based on our new framework, we introduce the $(k,\Delta)$-core and $(k,\Delta)$-truss decompositions, which are generalizations of the classic $k$-core and $k$-truss decompositions for multigraphs. Moreover, we show how $(k,\Delta)$-cores and $(k,\Delta)$-trusses can be efficiently further decomposed to obtain spatially and temporally connected components. We evaluate the characteristics of our new decompositions and the efficiency of our algorithms. Moreover, we demonstrate how our $(k,\Delta)$-decompositions can be applied to analyze malicious content in a Twitter network to obtain insights that state-of-the-art baselines cannot obtain., Comment: Accepted at WSDM'25

Abstract

INTRODUÇÃO: Indivíduos com síndrome coronariana aguda e menores taxas de filtração glomerular são associados a piores desfechos. Apesar de diversas fórmulas terem sido propostas para estimar a taxa de filtração glomerular, ainda não está definido qual delas teria o melhor poder de predição dos desfechos em pacientes idosos com síndrome coronariana aguda. OBJETIVO: Comparar três fórmulas para a taxa de filtração glomerular a fim de predizer a mortalidade intra-hospitalar e outros desfechos. MÉTODOS: Coorte retrospectiva intra-hospitalar com idosos acometidos com síndrome coronariana aguda, admitidos em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Cardiológica, no período de 1 de janeiro a 31 de dezembro de 2013. Foram utilizadas as fórmulas Cockcroft-Gault, MDRD e CKD-EPI para o cálculo da taxa de filtração glomerular. RESULTADOS: Foram analisados 122 indivíduos, 51,6% do gênero masculino, com média de 73,5 anos. A mortalidade foi de 19,6%. As médias da taxa de filtração glomerular para Cockcroft-Gault, MDRD e CKD-EPI foram, respectivamente, de 70,24 mL/min. (± 33,35), 74,70 mL/min./1,73 m2 (± 30,91) e 69,79 mL/min./1,73 m2 (± 23,82). Verificou-se a relação de todas as fórmulas com óbito (p = 0,001 versus 0,028 versus 0,028), uso de antibióticos (p = 0,002 versus < 0,001 versus 0,001) e hemodiálise (p ≤ 0,001 versus 0,003 versus 0,003). A fórmula Cockcroft-Gault teve maior área sob a curva pelo método ROC (0,701 versus 0,634 versus 0,639) e foi a única com significância estatística (IC95% 0,579 - 0,822, p = 0,006) para mortalidade intra-hospitalar. CONCLUSÃO: A Cockcroft-Gault foi a fórmula com melhor acurácia para predizer mortalidade.

Abstract

Abstract Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas (UPS) represent a prevalent and aggressive subtype of soft tissue sarcomas (STS) in adults. Despite advancements in loco regional treatments, many patients with high grade STS, including UPS, develop metastatic disease. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is a standard approach to mitigate this risk, but response variability necessitates refined patient selection strategies. This study investigated the correlation between UPS microenvironment and neoadjuvant chemotherapy response in resectable UPS. The NEOSARCOMICS study (NCT02789384) enrolled patients with resectable STS from six sarcoma centers in France. Patients received anthracycline based chemotherapy, followed by surgery. Histological response, gene expression profiling, and multiplex immunohistofluorescence were performed on baseline and post treatment tumor samples. Plasma proteomics was analyzed to identify biomarkers. Good responders to neoadjuvant chemotherapy showed enrichment in genes related to stemness and cell cycle regulation, while poor responders exhibited immune related gene enrichment. Proteomic profiling revealed immune pathway activation and downregulation of cell cycle pathways in non responders. Despite being associated with a good prognosis, high immune infiltration, particularly of CD8 + T cells and CD20 + B cells, predicts a poor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in UPS, suggesting the need for alternative therapeutic strategies for patients with inflamed UPS.Ongoing clinical trials are exploring the efficacy of combining chemotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors to improve outcomes.

Abstract

Pancreatic cancer is a complex malignancy associated with poor prognosis and high symptom burden. Optimal patient care relies on the integration of various sectors in the healthcare field as well as innovation through research. The Canadian National Pancreas Conference (NPC) was co-organized and hosted by Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in November 2023 in Montreal, Canada. The conference sought to bridge the gap between Canadian healthcare providers and researchers who share the common goal of improving the prognosis, quality of life, and survival for patients with pancreatic cancer. The accredited event featured discussion topics including diagnosis and screening, value-based and palliative care, pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, cancer-reducing treatment, and an overview of the current management landscape. The present article reviews the NPC sessions and discusses the presented content with respect to the current literature.

Abstract

Abstract Anti-angiogenic agents elicit considerable immune modulatory effects within the tumor microenvironment, underscoring the rationale for synergistic clinical development of VEGF and immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced gastric cancer (AGC). Early phase studies involving Asian patients demonstrated encouraging anti-tumor efficacies. We report the results of the REGOMUNE phase II study, in which Caucasian patients were administered regorafenib, a multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in combination with avelumab, a PD-L1-targeting monoclonal antibody. This therapeutic regimen resulted in deep and durable responses in 19% of patients, with the median duration of response not yet reached. Notwithstanding, a significant proportion of AGC patients exhibited no therapeutic advantage, prompting investigations into mechanisms of inherent resistance. Comprehensive biomarker profiling elucidated that non-responders predominantly exhibited an augmented presence of M2 macrophages within the tumor microenvironment and a marked overexpression of S100A10 by neoplastic cells, a protein previously implicated in macrophage chemotaxis. Additionally, peripheral biomarker assessments identified elevated levels of cytokines, including CSF-1, IL-4, IL-8, and TWEAK, correlating with adverse clinical outcomes, thereby accentuating the role of macrophage infiltration in mediating resistance. These insights furnish an invaluable foundation for elucidating, and potentially circumventing, resistance mechanisms in current AGC therapeutic paradigms, emphasizing the integral role of tumor microenvironmental dynamics and immune modulation.

Abstract Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) have long been a formidable challenge in oncology, partly because of their rarity and diversity, which complicates large-scale studies and slows the advent of new treatments. Traditionally anchored by anthracycline-based chemotherapy, the landscape of STS treatment hasn’t shifted dramatically in the past twenty years. However, recent strides in research are starting to paint a more hopeful picture. Leveraging advanced molecular profiling, researchers are now tailoring treatments to the unique genetic makeup of tumors, with targeted therapies showing promise. Innovations such as NTRK inhibitors for NTRK-rearranged sarcomas and gamma-secretase inhibitors for desmoid tumors are changing clinical practices. The rise of immunotherapy, including novel agents like LAG-3 inhibitors and bifunctional proteins that target both TGF-β and PD-L1, offers new avenues for treatment, particularly when combined with traditional therapies like chemotherapy. Meanwhile, the approval of epigenetic treatments for specific sarcoma subtypes heralds a new wave of strategy based on histological specificity, which could lead to more personalized and effective care. While challenges remain, the field of STS treatment is evolving, driven by a deeper understanding of the disease’s biological underpinnings and a commitment to innovative research approaches.

37. Insights on Expectations and Characteristics of Teacher-Student Relationships; a Phenomenological Study Exploring the Lived Experiences of Urban Elementary Parents

Abstract

Teacher-student relationships have long been identified as an important factor in the success of a student, and in the investment of the teacher. Extensive research has been conducted on the perception and outcomes of teacher student relationships from the perspective of the teacher and that of the students. However, research on the outcomes, insights, and expectation of teacher-student relationships from the perspective of parents, specifically parents of urban elementary students, is scarce. This study aimed to address the research gap by exploring the lived experiences of urban elementary parents through a phenomenological, qualitative study. Three semi-structured focus groups were held in which the researcher interviewed and facilitated discussions with parents of a child currently in kindergarten-second-grade in an urban school district in Northeastern Ohio. The 16 parent participants were asked to describe characteristics and expectations of high-quality teacher-student relationships, reflecting on their lived experiences and current state as a parent of an elementary student. Participants shared personal anecdotes, reflected on the impact of teachers in their own life, and emphasized the formative role teachers play in all aspects of a child's life. Responses indicated five primary themes when determining expectation and characteristics of teacher-student relationships from the perspective of parents: 1. Strong and consistent communication, 2. Teacher care and connection, 3. Teacher awareness and understanding to individual situations, 4. Holding students and families to high-expectations, and 5. Student engagement and recognition of individualized learning. The results of the study suggest that the teacher-student relationship is pivotal in making meaningful connections and creating a sense of belongingness and interconnectivity for students. Implications of the study indicate the importance of viewing the teacher-student relationship from a comprehensive lens, including the insights of parents, teachers, and students. The advocacy for resources and opportunities for teachers to foster relationships is vital in creating student success in the academic setting and beyond. Additional findings include the cruciality of the teacher beyond school in making connections, and the significance of the teacher in the success of the students, especially in an urban setting. The teacher matters in all components of a student's life. Furthermore, the results indicate that high-quality teacher student relationships include interpersonal and authentic relational attributes of care, investment, respect, cultural attunement, and a connection beyond academics. Abstract

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities.
