Abstract

So far, the nature of three-nucleon forces (3NFs) derived by the chiral effective field theory has been intensively investigated by various theoretical approaches. In this work, to address the chiral 3NF within the shell-model framework, three-body matrix elements are formulated in terms of the harmonic oscillator basis functions, by adopting the nonlocal regulator. We perform a benchmark test for p-shell nuclei inorder to confirm our framework. Then we show that the contribution of the 3NF to the monopole component of the effective shell model Hamiltonian plays an essential role to account for the shell evolution of f p-shell nuclei.

5. Realistic shell model description of beta decay

Abstract

In this paper, we extend our previous realistic shell-model study of Gamow-Teller strengths and double-β decay properties for nuclei around 132Sn to lighter mass nuclei. The effective shell-model Hamiltonian and transition operators are microscopically derived by way of many-body perturbation theory, without resorting to empirical parameters. Our main aim is to further check the reliability of our approach and verify its stability in other mass regions. Calculated energy spectra as well as electric-quadrupole and β-decay properties are presented for 76Ge and 82Se and compared with the experimental data, together with some results for 130Te and 136Xe already reported in our previous paper. Finally, some preliminary results of nuclear matrix elements responsible for the neutrinoless double beta decay, calculated by using the bare operator, are shown.

Abstract

Excited states in Xe-137 have been studied by using the near-barrier single-neutron transfer reactions C-13(Xe-136, C-12 gamma) Xe-137 and Be-9(Xe-136, Be-8 gamma) Xe-137 in inverse kinematics. Particle-gamma and particle-gamma gamma coincidence measurements have been performed with the Phoswich Wall and Digital Gammasphere detector arrays. Evidence is found for a 13/2(2)(+) level (E = 3137 keV) and for additional high-lying 3/2(-) and 5/2(-) states. The results are discussed in the framework of realistic shell-model calculations. These calculations are also extended to the 13/2(1)(+) and 13/2(2)(+) levels in the N = 83 isotonic chain. They indicate that there is a need for a value of the neutron 0i(13/2) single-particle energy (E-SPE = 2366 keV) lower than the one proposed in the literature. It is also demonstrated that the population patterns of the j = l +/- 1/2 single-particle states in Xe-137 are different for the two targets used in these measurements and the implications of this effect are addressed.

Abstract

For the first time, the γ decay of excited states has been observed in a nucleus situated in the quadrant south-east of doubly magic 132Sn, a region in which experimental information so far is limited to ground-state properties. Six γ rays with energies of 50, 86, 103, 227, 357, and 602 keV were observed following the β-delayed neutron emission from 133Cd85, populated in the projectile fission of a 238U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN within the EURICA project. The new experimental information is compared to the results of a modern realistic shell-model calculation, the first one in this region very far from stability, focusing in particular on the π0g−19/2⊗ ν1f7/2 particle-hole multiplet in 132In83. Abstract

The beta decay of the semi-magic nucleus Cd-130 has been studied at the RIBF facility at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The high statistics of the present experiment allowed for a revision of the established level scheme of In-130 and the observation of additional beta feeding to high- lying core-excited states in In-130. The experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations employing a model space consisting of the full major N = 50-82 neutron and Z = 28-50 proton shells and the NA-14 interaction, and good agreement is found.

Abstract

The beta decays Mn-68 -> Fe-68 -> Mn-69 -> Fe-69 and Mn-70 -> Fe-70 have been measured at the RIBF facility at RIKEN using the EURICA gamma spectrometer combined with an active stopper consisting of a stack of Si detectors. The nuclei were produced as fission fragments from a beam of U-238 at a bombarding energy of (345) MeV/nucleon impinging on a Be target and selected using the BigRIPS separator. Half-lives and beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities have been extracted for these decays, together with first experimental information on excited states populated in Fe-69,Fe-70. The data indicate a continuously increasing deformation for Fe isotopes up to A = 70. This is interpreted, as for Cr isotopes, in terms of the interplay between the quadrupole correlations of the nu 1d(5/2) and nu 0g(9/2) orbitals and the monopole component of the pi 0f(7/2)-nu 0f(5/2) interaction. Abstract

The reduced transition probability B(E2;0(+) -> 2(+)) has been measured for the neutron-rich nucleus Ni-74 in an intermediate energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The obtained B(E2;0(+) -> 2(+)) = 642(-226)(+216) e(2) fm(4) value defines a trend which is unexpectedly small if referred to Ni-70 and to a previous indirect determination of the transition strength in Ni-74. This indicates a reduced polarization of the Z = 28 core by the valence neutrons. Calculations in the pfgd model space reproduce well the experimental result indicating that the B(E2) strength predominantly corresponds to neutron excitations. The ratio of the neutron and proton multipole matrix elements supports such an interpretation.

Abstract

The study of the collective properties of nuclear excitations far from stability provides information about the shell structure at extreme conditions. Spectroscopic ob- servables such as the energy or the transition probabilities of the lowest states, in nuclei with large neutron excess, allow to probe the density and isospin dependence of the ef- fective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Emblematic is the case of the evolution of the Ni isotopic chain where several features showed up moving from the most neutron rich stable isotope ( 64 Ni) towards the 78 Ni nucleus where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure. In this framework, we have recently per- formed an experiment with the goal to extract the B(E2; 0 + ! 2 + ) value for the 74 Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment: preliminary results are discussed.

Abstract

In this paper, we extend our previous realistic shell-model study of Gamow-Teller strengths and double-β decay properties for nuclei around 132Sn to lighter mass nuclei. The effective shell-model Hamiltonian and transition operators are microscopically derived by way of many-body perturbation theory, without resorting to empirical parameters. Our main aim is to further check the reliability of our approach and verify its stability in other mass regions. Calculated energy spectra as well as electric-quadrupole and β-decay properties are presented for 76Ge and 82Se and compared with the experimental data, together with some results for 130Te and 136Xe already reported in our previous paper. Finally, some preliminary results of nuclear matrix elements responsible for the neutrinoless double beta decay, calculated by using the bare operator, are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

New experimental information has been recently obtained on the odd-odd nucleus 134-I. We interpret the five observed excited states up to the energy of ~3 MeV on the basis of a realistic shell-model calculation, and make spin-parity assignments accordingly. Abstract

The study of the evolution of nuclear shells far from stability provides fundamental information about the shape and symmetry of the nuclear mean field. Nuclei with large neutron/proton ratio allow to probe the density dependence of the effective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Of particular interest is the region of 78 Ni where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure.We have recently measured the B(E 2; 0+ → 2+ ) of the 74 Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory of the Michigan State University. The 74 Ni secondary beam has been produced by fragmentation of 86 Kr at 140 AMeV on a thick Be target. Selected radioactive fragments impinged on a secondary 197 Au target where the measurement of the emitted γ -rays allows to extract the Coulomb excitation cross section and related structure information. Preliminary B(E2) values do not point towards an enhancement of the transition matrix element and the comparison to what was already measured by Aoi and co-workers in [1] opens new scenarios in the interpretation of the shell evolution of the Z=28 isotopes.
