Exploration of efficient water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) is the primary challenge in conversion of renewable energy into fuels. Here we report a molecularly well-defined heterogeneous WOC with Aza-fused, π-conjugated, microporous polymer (Aza-CMP) coordinated single cobalt sites (Aza-CMP-Co). The single cobalt sites in Aza-CMP-Co exhibited superior activity under alkaline and near-neutral conditions. Moreover, the molecular nature of the isolated catalytic sites makes Aza-CMP-Co a reliable model for studying the heterogeneous water oxidation mechanism. By a combination of experimental and theoretical results, a pH-dependent nucleophilic attack pathway for O-O bond formation was proposed. Under alkaline conditions, the intramolecular hydroxyl nucleophilic attack (IHNA) process with which the adjacent -OH group nucleophilically attacks Co4+=O was identified as the rate-determining step. This process leads to lower activation energy and accelerated kinetics than those of the intermolecular water nucleophilic attack (WNA) pathway. This study provides significant insights into the crucial function of electrolyte pH in water oxidation catalysis and enhancement of water oxidation activity by regulation of the IHNA pathway.

Conditions such as the temperature and pressure experienced by lithium-ion battery components are dependent oncell geometry and can vary widely within a large cell. The resulting uneven degradation is challenging to study at thefull cell level but can be revealed upon disassembly and post mortem analysis. In this work, we report localizedlithium plating in automotive-grade, prismatic lithium-ion cells, also under cycling conditions generally consideredto be mild (e.g., 5–65 %SOC, 23 ◦C, 0.5C cycle rate). Dead lithium content is quantified using 7Li nuclear magneticresonance spectroscopy in both electrode and separator samples, corresponding to substantial capacity fade(26–46%) of the full cells. Severe lithium plating is typically initiated in regions near the positive tab, in which boththe separators and negative electrodes are ultimately deactivated. High pressure arises during cycling, and wepropose a deactivation mechanism based on high local stress due to electrode expansion and external constraint.Further, we develop a model to demonstrate that component deactivation can result in lithium plating even undermild cycling conditions. Ion specific effects are ubiquitous in solutions and govern a large number of colloidal phenomena. To date, a substantial and sustained effort has been directed at understanding the underlying molecular interactions. As a new approach, we address this issue by sensitive 1H NMR methods that measure the electrophoretic mobility and the self-diffusion coefficient of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains in bulk aqueous solution in the presence of salts with the anion component varied from kosmotropes to chaotropes along the Hofmeister series. The accuracy of the applied electrophoretic NMR experiments is exceptionally high, on the order of 10–10 m2/(V s), corresponding to roughly 10–4 elementary charges per monomer effectively associated with the neutral polymer. We find that chaotropic anions associate to PNIPAM with an apparent Langmuir-type saturation behavior. The polymer chains remain extended upon ion association, and momentum transfer from anion to polymer is only partial which indicates weak attractive short-range forces between anion and polymer and, thereby and in contrast to some other ion–polymer systems, the lack of well-defined binding sites. Dispersing graphene sheets in liquids, in particular water, could enhance the transport properties (like thermal conductivity) of the dispersion. Yet, such dispersions are difficult to achieve since graphene sheets are prone to aggregate and subsequently precipitate due to their strong van der Waals interactions. While strong water association with cellulose in plant cell walls and man-made materials is well-established, its molecular scale aspects are not fully understood. The thermodynamic consequences of having water molecules located at the microfibril-microfibril interfaces in cellulose fibril aggregates are therefore analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that a thin layer of water molecules at those interfaces can be in a state of thermal equilibrium with water surrounding the fibril aggregates because such an arrangement lowers the free energy of the total system. The main reason is enthalpic: water at the microfibril-microfibril interfaces enables the cellulose surface hydroxyls to experience a more favorable electrostatic environment. This enthalpic gain overcomes the entropic penalty from strong immobilization of water molecules. Hence, those particular water molecules stabilize the cellulose fibril aggregates, akin to the role of water in some proteins. Structural and functional hypotheses related to this finding are presented.

In the cellulose scientific community, hydrogen bonding is often used as the explanation for a large variety of phenomena and properties related to cellulose and cellulose based materials. Yet, hydrogen bonding is just one of several molecular interactions and furthermore is both relatively weak and sensitive to the environment. In this review we present a comprehensive examination of the scientific literature in the area, with focus on theory and molecular simulation, and conclude that the relative importance of hydrogen bonding has been, and still is, frequently exaggerated.

In particular, we record the quadrupole-split $^7$Li-NMR spectra and $^7$Li longitudinal relaxation over a wide temperature range, and determine lithium self-diffusion both parallel and perpendicular to the fiber axis. Recording the temperature dependence permits us to interpret the presence of motional averaging of spin couplings for mobile Li. The joint analysis shows that at low Li content, Li occupies sites that lack ordered coordination and delocalized electrons and are collected in disordered spatial domains. Upon increasing the Li content, ordered sites collected in ordered domains become populated. Both disordered and ordered domains have a high inherent heterogeneity with a typical spatial extension of a few nanometers. The disordered domains exhibit a continuous topology that permits unhindered diffusion within it. At high Li content we also observe the presence of very small (∼nm) particles of metallic lithium. The joint analysis of XRD in combination with diffusion anisotropy, and anisotropy from the $^7$Li-NMR spectrum (with samples oriented differently with regard to the applied magnetic field), shows that the mesoscopic structure is made by ordered domains arranged in a cylindrically rolled-up manner with the mesoscopic axis parallel to the fiber axis., Published by RSC, London ˜[u.a.]œ

The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has been used to study how the interfacial layer of an ionic liquid dissolved in a polar oil at low weight percentages responds to changes in applied potential. The changes in surface composition at the QCM gold surface depend on both the magnitude and sign of the applied potential. The time-resolved response indicates that the relaxation kinetics are limited by the diffusion of ions in the interfacial region and not in the bulk, since there is no concentration dependence. The measured mass changes cannot be explained only in terms of simple ion exchange; the relative molecular volumes of the ions and the density changes in response to ion exclusion must be considered. The relaxation behavior of the potential between the electrodes upon disconnecting the applied potential is more complex than that observed for pure ionic liquids, but a measure of the surface charge can be extracted from the exponential decay when the rapid initial potential drop is accounted for. The adsorbed film at the gold surface consists predominantly of ionic liquid despite the low concentration, which is unsurprising given the surtactant-like structures of (some of) the ionic liquid ions. Changes in response to potential correspond to changes in the relative numbers of cations and anions, rather than a change in the oil composition. No evidence for an electric field induced change in viscosity is observed. This work shows conclusively that electric potentials can be used to control the surface composition, even in an oil-based system, and paves the way for other ion solvent studies.

Surfactants have been widely employed to debundle, disperse and stabilize carbon nanotubes in aqueous solvents. Yet, a thorough understanding of the dispersing mechanisms at molecular level is still warranted. Herein, we investigated the influence of the molecular structure of gemini surfactants on the dispersibility of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). We used dicationic n-s-n gemini surfactants, varying n and s, the number of alkyl tail and alkyl spacer carbons, respectively; for comparisons, single-tailed surfactant homologues were also studied. Detailed curves of dispersed MWNT concentration vs. surfactant concentration were obtained through a stringently controlled experimental procedure, allowing for molecular insight. The gemini are found to be much more efficient dispersants than their single-tailed homologues, i.e. lower surfactant concentration is needed to attain the maximum dispersed MWNT concentration. In general, the spacer length has a comparatively higher influence on the dispersing efficiency than the tail length. Further, scanning electron microscopy imaging shows a sizeable degree of MWNT debundling by the gemini surfactants in the obtained dispersions. Our observations also point to an adsorption process that does not entail the formation of micelle-like aggregates on the nanotube surface, but rather coverage by individual molecules, among which the ones that seem to be able to adapt best to the nanotube surface provide the highest efficiency. These studies are relevant for the rational design and choice of optimal dispersants for carbon nanomaterials and other similarly water-insoluble materials.

Atomistic molecular dynamics simulation is an important complement to experimental techniques for investi­gating properties of hydrated carbohydrate polymers at the molecular scale. A critical problem is to determinewhether or not a simulation has converged to thermal equilibrium before data collection can begin. In this work,simulations of xylan oligomers starting from random configurations at different levels of hydration are per­formed. The simulations show clear evidence of phase separation into water-rich and polymer-rich phases athigher hydration, in spite of standard indicators of equilibrium, such as density and energy, remaining constant.Using instead a set of parameters that are coupled to the structural and dynamical heterogeneity of the system, itis shown that simulation times on the order of one microsecond are needed to reach an equilibrated state.Moreover, qualitative similarities in the temporal evolution of these parameters suggest significant interplaybetween the structure and both polymer and water dynamics. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of 13C NMR longitudinal relaxation (T1) distributions were recently established as a powerful tool for characterizing moisture adsorption in natural amorphous polymers. Here, such computational-experimental synergy is demonstrated in a system with intrinsically high structural heterogeneity, namely crystalline cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) in highly hydrated aggregated state. In such a system, structure-function properties on the nanoscale remain largely uncovered by experimental means alone. In this work, broadly polydispersed experimental 13C NMR T1 distributions could be successfully reproduced in simulations and, for the first time, were decomposed into contributions from distinct molecular sources within the aggregated CNFs, namely, (i) the core and (ii) the less-accessible and accessible surface regions of the CNFs. Furthermore, within the surface groups structurally different sites such as (iii) residues with different hydroxymethyl orientations and (iv) center and origin chains could be discerned based on their distinct molecular dynamics. The MD simulations unravel a direct correlation between dynamical and structural heterogeneity at an atomistic-level resolution that cannot be accessed by NMR experiments. The proposed approach holds the potential to enable quantitative interpretation of NMR data from a range of multicomponent high-performance nanocomposites with significantly heterogeneous macromolecular structure.

Propofol is an amphiphilic small molecule that strongly influences the function of cell membranes, yet data regarding interfacial properties of propofol remain scarce. Here we consider propofol adsorption at the air/water interface as elucidated by means of vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS), neutron reflectometry (NR), and surface tensiometry. VSFS data show that propofol adsorbed at the air/water interface interacts with water strongly in terms of hydrogen bonding and weakly in the proximity of the hydrocarbon parts of the molecule. In the concentration range studied there is almost no change in the orientation adopted at the interface. Data from NR show that propofol forms a dense monolayer with a thickness of 8.4 A and a limiting area per molecule of 40 A2, close to the value extracted from surface tensiometry. The possibility that islands or multilayers of propofol form at the air/water interface is therefore excluded as long as the solubility limit is not exceeded. Additionally, measurements of the 1H NMR chemical shifts demonstrate that propofol does not form dimers or multimers in bulk water up to the solubility limit.

Lithium-ion-free tris(2,2′-bipyridine) Co(ii/iii)-mediated electrolytes have previously been proposed for long-term stable dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Such redox systems also offer an impressive DSSC performance improvement under light soaking exposure, manifested by an increase in photocurrent and fill factor without the expense of decreasing photovoltage. Kinetic studies show that charge transfer and ion diffusion at the electrode/electrolyte interface are improved due to the light exposure. Control experiments reveal that the light effect is unambiguously associated with electrolyte components, [Co(bpy)3]3+ and the Lewis-base additive tert-butylpyridine (TBP). Electrochemical and spectroscopic investigation of the [Co(bpy)3]3+/TBP mixtures points out that the presence of TBP, which retards the electrolyte diffusion, however causes an irreversible redox reaction of [Co(bpy)3]3+ upon light exposure that improves the overall conductivity. This discovery not only provides a new strategy to mitigate the typical Jsc-Voc trade-off in Co(ii/iii)-mediated DSSCs but also highlights the importance of investigating the photochemistry of a photoelectrochemical system. Size-exclusion quantification NMR spectroscopy (SEQ-NMR) is introduced for measuring equilibrium distribution coefficients, Keq, in porous media. The porous medium is equilibrated with a polydisperse polymer solution. The original bulk polymer solution and the polymer solution after equilibration but in the absence of the porous medium are analyzed by NMR diffusion experiments. The joint evaluation of the two diffusion attenuation curves under suitable constraints provides the extent by which polymer fractions of particular size were depleted from the solution by pore access. This procedure yields Keq versus polymer probe size, the selectivity curve that in turn can provide the pore size and its distribution. Simulations probe the performance of the method that is demonstrated experimentally in chromatographic media using dextran polymers. Macromolecular dynamics in biological systems, which play a crucial role for biomolecular function and activity at ambient temperature, depend strongly on moisture content. Yet, a generally accepted quantitative model of hydration-dependent phenomena based on local relaxation and diffusive dynamics of both polymer and its adsorbed water is still missing. In this work, atomistic-scale spatial distributions of motional modes are calculated using molecular dynamics simulations of hydrated xyloglucan (XG). These are shown to reproduce experimental hydration-dependent 13 C NMR longitudinal relaxation times (T 1 ) at room temperature, and relevant features of their broad distributions, which are indicative of locally heterogeneous polymer reorientational dynamics. At low hydration, the self-diffusion behavior of water shows that water molecules are confined to particular locations in the randomly aggregated XG network while the average polymer segmental mobility remains low. Upon increasing water content, the hydration network becomes mobile and fully accessible for individual water molecules, and the motion of hydrated XG segments becomes faster. Yet, the polymer network retains a heterogeneous gel-like structure even at the highest level of hydration. We show that the observed distribution of relaxations times arises from the spatial heterogeneity of chain mobility that in turn is a result of heterogeneous distribution of water-chain and chain-chain interactions. Our findings contribute to the picture of hydration-dependent dynamics in other macromolecules such as proteins, DNA, and synthetic polymers, and hold important implications for the mechanical properties of polysaccharide matrixes in plants and plant-based materials.

Mechanical agitation is commonly used to fragment and disperse insoluble materials in liquids. However, here we show that when pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes pre-dispersed in water are subject to vortex-shaking for very short periods (typically 10–60 s, power density ∼0.002 W mL −1 ), re-aggregation counterintuitively occurs. The initial dispersions are produced using surfactants as dispersants and powerful tip sonication (∼1 W mL −1 ) followed by centrifugation. Detailed imaging by light and electron microscopies shows that the vortex-induced aggregates consist of loose networks (1–10 2 μm in size) of intertwined tubes and thin bundles. The average aggregate size increases with vortexing time in an apparently logarithmic manner and depends on the dispersant used, initial concentration of nanotubes and size distribution of bundles. The aggregation is, nonetheless, reversible: if the vortex-shaken dispersions are mildly bath-sonicated (∼0.03 W mL −1 ), the flocs break down and re-dispersal occurs. Molecular insight for the mechanism behind this surprising phenomenon is put forth.

The rich pool of protein conformations combined with the dimensions and properties of carbon nanotubes create new possibilities in functional materials and nanomedicine. Here, the intrinsically disordered protein α-synuclein is explored as a dispersant of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in water. We use a range of spectroscopic methods to quantify the amount of dispersed SWNT and to elucidate the binding mode of α-synuclein to SWNT. The dispersion ability of α-synuclein is good even with mild sonication and the obtained dispersion is very stable over time. The whole polypeptide chain is involved in the interaction accompanied by a fraction of the chain changing into a helical structure upon binding. Similar to other dispersants, we observe that only a small fraction (15-20%) of α-synuclein is adsorbed on the SWNT surface with an average residence time below 10 ms.

The changes occurring in EPDM cable transit seals during thermal ageing and the causes of these changes were investigated. Samples were aged at a temperature of 170 °C, and subsequently evaluated with respect to the distance from the surface with modulus profiling, infrared (IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, based on the extractable mass fraction profiles for initial and aged materials. The ageing resulted in an increase in the modulus and in the degree of oxidation and in a decrease in the NMR transverse relaxation time, T2. The NMR data were obtained in a non-invasive manner by ex situ experiments performed with a portable low-field spectrometer (NMR MOUSE). The results showed deterioration processes that can be attributed to different mechanisms i.e. oxidation, anaerobic crosslinking and migration of oil extender. The unique combination of parameter profiles made it possible to resolve and quantify these three contributing mechanisms. The NMR results highlight the potential of this method for on-site testing.

Electrophoretic NMR has the capacity to provide unique physico-chemical information but is limited by a variety of experimental artifacts, such as thermal convection and electrolytic products in the sample. Here we present some simple modifications to the experimental hardware and protocol that, in a significant number of cases, can much improve experimental accuracy and precision. We show that one can strongly reduce artifacts in a symmetric sample cell with an appropriate feeding of current and with a porous plug suitably inserted. This latter feature requires that the electric field pulses across the sensitive volume are implemented as current-controlled pulses applied to the sample. Measurements with current-controlled pulses have the additional advantage of not requiring calibration with samples of known electrophoretic mobility.

The binding strength of dispersants to the surface of carbon nanotubes is of crucial importance for the efficiency of the dispersion process and for potential applications, yet data are scarce on this subject. Here we present the results of diffusion NMR experiments in dispersions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) prepared by either the polymer Pluronics F127 or the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA). The experiments detect the amount of F127 molecules adsorbed onto the SWNT surface. This quantity is recorded (i) in F127-SWNT dispersions to which BSA molecules are added and (ii) in BSA-SWNT dispersions to which F127 molecules are added. The data clearly show that F127 replaces BSA adsorbed at the SWNT surface, while BSA leaves the adsorbed F127 coverage intact. Consequently, F127 binds to the nanotube surface more strongly than BSA. A method for measuring the ligand concentration in heterogeneous materials like chromatography media is described. In this method, 13C single pulse excitation magic angle spinning NMR experiment with broadband 1H decoupling is used to determine the peak integrals for a butyl ligand in the spectrum of a dried chromatography medium. Within a carefully controlled protocol, those integrals compared with that of the internal reference compound dimethyl sulfone provide the required volume concentration with an accuracy of ca 2%. The binding of K+ and Ba2+ cations to short poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains with ca. 4–25 monomeric units in methanol was studied by determining the effective charge of the polymer through a combination of electrophoretic NMR and diffusion NMR experiments. These cations were previously found to bind to long PEO chains in a similar strong manner. In addition, 1H chemical shift and longitudinal spin relaxation rate changes upon binding were quantified. For both systems, binding was stronger for the short chains than that for the longer chains, which is attributed mainly to interactions between bound ions. For K+ ions, the equilibrium binding constant of a cation to a binding site was measured. For both cations, the binding site was estimated to consist of ca. six monomeric units that coordinated with the respective ions. The performance of a new electrophoretic NMR (eNMR) method that uses a Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill echo train with repeated electric field reversal is investigated. We show that this pulse sequence, with acronym CPMGER, yields strongly reduced artifacts from convective flow effects caused by the simultaneous presence of electroosmotic and thermal driving forces. We demonstrate the achieved improvements in various aqueous solutions. Ultimately, the method can be used for obtaining electrophoretic mobilities by eNMR without relying on uncharged reference molecules, otherwise a significant limitation for electrophoretic experiments performed with nuclei other than (1)H.

The bulk self diffusion of the ethylammonium cation and the nitrate anion can both be described by respective single diffusion coefficients. Diffusion of the anion is 1.7 times higher than that of the cation. This indicates no tight association of the ions in the ionic liquid. For the ethylammonium cation confined between glass plates the effective diffusion coefficient along, as well as normal to the confining glass plates is higher by a factor of 1.86 as compared to that in the bulk. The same time, NMR T2 relaxation of protons of NH3 group of the EA cation is faster by a factor of 22 than that in bulk. 2H NMR spectra of selectively labeled CH2 and CH3 groups of EA do not demonstrate any ordering of the EA between the glass plates. We suggested that these data favor a model where a bulk isotropic sponge like structure of EAN is saved in the confinement, but sizes of connecting channels increases. Cellulose, one of the most abundant renewable resources, is insoluble in most common solvents but dissolves in aqueous alkali under a narrow range of conditions. To elucidate the solubilization mechanism, we performed electrophoretic NMR on cellobiose, a subunit of cellulose, showing that cellobiose acts as an acid with two dissociation steps at pH 12 and 13.5. Chemical shift differences between cellobiose in NaOH and NaCl were estimated using 2D NMR and compared to DFT shift differences upon deprotonation. The dissociation steps are the deprotonation of the hemiacetal OH group and the deprotonation of one of four OH groups on the nonreducing anhydroglucose unit. MD simulations reveal that aggregation is suppressed upon charging cellulose chains in solution. Our findings strongly suggest that cellulose is to a large extent charged in concentrated aqueous alkali, a seemingly crucial factor for solubilization. This insight, overlooked in the current literature, is important for understanding cellulose dissolution and for synthesis of new sustainable materials.

In order to establish the potential correlation between the macroscopic ice adhesion and the molecular properties of the premolten layer (PML), the adhesion strength between ice and hydrophilic silica has been measured as a function of temperature. In addition, temperature-dependent molecular properties have been determined using techniques that are sensitive to different aspects of the PML, specifically total internal reflection (TIR) Raman, vibrational sum frequency (VSFS) and NMR spectroscopies. The ice shear adhesion strength was observed to increase linearly with decreasing temperature until -25 °C, where a plateau marked the adhesive strength having reached the cohesive strength of ice. Complex formation in methanol between monodisperse polyethylene oxide (PEO) and a large set of cations was studied by measuring the effective charge acquired by PEO upon complexation. Quantitative data were obtained at a low ionic strength of 2 mM (for some salts, also between 0.5 and 6 mM) by a combination of diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrophoretic NMR experiments. For strongly complexing cations, the magnitude of the acquired effective charge was on the order of 1 cation per 100 monomer units. For monovalent cations, the relative strength of binding varies as Na+ < K+ ≈ Rb+ ≈ Cs+, whereas Li+ exhibited no significant binding. All polyvalent cations bind very weakly, except for Ba2+ that exhibited strong binding. Anions do not bind, as is shown by the lack of response to the chemical nature of anionic species (perchlorate, iodide, or acetate). We investigate a way one can achieve good spectral resolution in (2)H MAS NMR experiments. The goal is to be able to distinguish between and study sites in various deuterated materials with small chemical shift dispersion. We show that the (2)H MAS NMR spectra recorded during a spin-relaxation experiment are amenable to spectral decomposition because of the different evolution of spectral components during the relaxation delay. We verify that the results are robust by global least-square fitting of the spectral series both under the assumption of specific line shapes and without such assumptions (COmponent-REsolved spectroscopy, CORE). In addition, we investigate the reliability of the developed protocol by analyzing spectra simulated with different combinations of spectral parameters. The performance is demonstrated in a model material of deuterated poly(methacrylic acid) that contains two (2)H spin populations with similar chemical shifts but different quadrupole splittings. In (2)H-exchanged cellulose containing two (2)H spin populations with very similar chemical shifts and quadrupole splittings, the method provides new site-selective information about the molecular dynamics.

International audience; Despite having been used for ages to protect wood against the influence of outdoor elements, the chemistry of vegetable oils within wood is poorly known. We propose a method based on solid-state magic-angle sample spinning NMR to in situ characterize oil oxidation as well as its immobilization. To eliminate signal coming from wood molecules but to keep signal from the oil, direct 13C excitation is performed with low-power 1H decoupling during signal acquisition. To suppress the effect of anisotropic spin-interactions and magnetic field inhomogeneity, the sample is spun at the magic-angle. Mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acid derivatives show a difference in their oxidation process: the monounsaturated methyl oleate reacts with wood components and becomes immobilized while the polyunsaturated methyl linoleate becomes oxidized and form oligomers but does not seem to bind to wood. Linola® oil behaves as would be expected on the basis of its composition by monounsaturated and polyunsaturated chains. This method can be generalized to all coating treatments to characterize chemical pathways and reactions. A better understanding of coating effects on wood is a crucial step to design more efficient protective mixtures.

International audience; The binding of block copolymer Pluronic F-127 in aqueous dispersions of single- (SWCNT) and multiwalled (MWCNT) carbon nanotubes has been studied by pulsed-field-gradient (PFG) 1H NMR spectroscopy. We show that a major fraction of polymers exist as a free species while a minor fraction is bound to the carbon nanotubes (CNT). The polymers exchange between these two states with residence times on the nanotube surface of 24 ± 5 ms for SWCNT and of 54 ± 11 ms for MWCNT. The CNT concentration in the solution was determined by improved thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicating that the concentration of SWCNT dispersed by F-127 was significantly higher than that for MWCNT. For SWCNT, the area per adsorbed Pluronic F-127 molecule is estimated to be about 40 nm2.

This study evaluated the capability of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology based on small portable magnets for in situ studies of the local moisture content in wood. Low-field and low-resolution [1H]NMR with a unilateral permanent magnet was used to monitor and map the moisture content of wood cladding materials of various types in a spatially resolved manner. The results show that portable NMR equipment based on small open-access permanent magnets can be successfully used for non-invasive monitoring of the moisture content in various extended wood specimens. The moisture content was measured with a depth resolution of 0.2 mm and a maximum penetration depth of 3 mm. This makes the technique suitable for in situ local moisture content measurements beneath a coating layer in the cladding, for example, and it is also possible to relate the moisture level to specific properties of the wood material.

Despite the advantages offered by solid dispersions, the marketed products based on this technology are few. The most frequent concern is the stability of the amorphous drug. The state of the drug in solid dispersions is, in general, poorly characterized as the number of characterization techniques available to monitor nanometer-sized drug particles embedded in a matrix are limited. Here we present a combination of localized NMR spectroscopic and NMR imaging techniques which allow in situ monitoring of the state of the drug during tablet disintegration and dissolution. (19)F NMR relaxation is shown to be sensitive to both the crystalline/amorphous state and the size of the model nanoparticles made of the drug substance flutamide. The time course of drug mobilization and recrystallization is detected with spatial resolution within swelling solid dispersion tablets. Comparing results from spatially resolved (19)F, (2)H and (1)H NMR experiments, recrystallization is related to its enabling factors such as local hydration level and local mobility of the polymer matrix. The initially amorphous drug may recrystallize either by nanoparticle coalescence or by ripening of crystalline grains.

The freezing and melting temperature hysteresis of water in Vycor porous glass and controlled pore glass (CPG) with the nominal pore diameters 7.0 and 7.5 nm, respectively, has been explored by NMR cryoporometry and NMR relaxometry techniques. The freezing branch of the hysteresis in Vycor was found to be much steeper than the melting one, presumably due to the pore blocking on freezing. This is not observed in CPG, which exhibits parallel freezing and melting branches. Sub-loops recorded starting from partially frozen states are self-similar with respect to the amount of unfrozen water, in both CPG and Vycor. On the other hand, sub-loops starting from partially molten states are self-similar only in CPG, while in Vycor, their shape does depend on the amount of unfrozen water. T 2 relaxation measurements undertaken along the freezing branch reveal in both glasses a slow (on an NMR timescale) exchange of water molecules between frozen and unfrozen pore domains, indicating a good segregation of those domains on freezing. On melting, however, the regime of slow exchange persists only for CPG, while in Vycor, a quasi-exponential T 2 relaxation is observed, characteristic of fast exchange. This suggests that frozen and molten regions in Vycor are well dispersed on melting, while in CPG they present extended domains. We explain such a difference assuming a worse interconnection of a Vycor’s pore space as compared to CPG, taking into account its essentially lower porosity (0.28 versus 0.51 in CPG).

The interaction between moisture and the macromolecular wood tissue is of critical importance to wood properties. In this context, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is very promising as this method could deliver molecular information on the submillimeter scale (i.e., along concentration gradients) about both free and adsorbed water and the cell wall polymers. In the present study, it is demonstrated for the first time that wood containing adsorbed heavy water (2H2O) can be studied by MRI based on separated images due to water (2H MRI) and cell wall polymers (1H MRI). Data confirm that in specimens equilibrated at controlled humidity there is a direct correlation between bound water content and relative density of the polymers in wood tissue; there is a strong variation across annual rings.

Propeller propellant: The largest nitrogen oxide to date, trinitramide (TNA), has been prepared following extensive quantum chemical studies in which its kinetic stability and several physical properties were estimated. TNA was detected using IR and NMR spectroscopy. The compound is highly energetic and shows promise for cryogenic propulsion and as a reagent in high-energy-density material research.

Solid dispersion tablets prepared by either spray drying or rotoevaporation and exhibiting different grain and pore sizes were investigated under the process of hydration-swelling-gelation. (2)H and (1)H NMR microimaging experiments were used to selectively follow water penetration and polymer mobilization kinetics, respectively, while the drug release kinetics was followed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The obtained data, in combination with morphological information by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), reveal a complex process that ultimately leads to release of the drug into the aqueous phase. We find that the rate of water ingress has no direct influence on release kinetics, which also renders air in the tablets a secondary factor. On the other hand, drug release is directly correlated with the polymer mobilization kinetics. Water diffusion into the originally dry polymer grains determines the rate of grain swelling and the hydration within the grains varies strongly with grain size. We propose that this sets the stage for creating homogeneous gels for small grain sizes and heterogeneous gels for large grain sizes. Fast diffusion through water-rich sections of the inhomogeneous gels that exhibit a large mesh size is the factor which yields a faster drug release from tablets prepared by rotoevaporation.
