5. Israel Kirzner's Use of Narratives to Illuminate the Limitations of Neoclassical Economics and the Austrian Alternative.

NEOCLASSICAL school of economics ,NARRATIVE therapy ,THEORY of the firm ,NARRATIVES ,WAKEFULNESS - Abstract
This article investigates how Israel Kirzner approached mainstream economists with his view of the Austrian theory. It discusses the role of narrative elements in Kirzner's theory in his use of stories to illuminate ideas in entrepreneurship, the theory of the firm, and the knowledge problem. This article argues that the use of narrative made Kirzner's theory more open to dialogue without tying him to the scientific demarcation criteria used in mainstream economics. The scientific narratives in Kirzner's work allow him to (i) emphasize the logical order of economic phenomena, (ii) highlight causal mechanisms in economic theory, (iii) make some generalizations but without perfect predictions with economics, (iv) explore different scenarios from contingent events in the economy, and (v) illustrate economic ideas with fictional but plausible cases. The article concludes that these narrative aspects help Kirzner illuminate the limitations of neoclassical economics and offer an alternative perspective based on the entrepreneurial state of "alertness" from an Austrian point of view. Carl Menger established in his pathbreaking 1871 work Grundsätze der Volkswirtschaftslehre (Principles of Economics) the theoretical foundations from which all future developments in the tradition of the Austrian School of economics can arguably be traced. However, some followers working in that same intellectual tradition have found Menger's treatment of entrepreneurship lacking with respect to its systematic integration with Menger's overriding aim to connect the subjective valuations of market participants with the prices that emerge in markets. Furthermore, an apparent dichotomy has been identified in past entrepreneurship literature between the theoretical work of Joseph Schumpeter and Israel Kirzner concerning the role of the entrepreneur in driving the market from or towards equilibrium, respectively. In this paper, we demonstrate how the entrepreneurial role as identified by Menger in his Principles is in fact systematically integrated with his conception of the market process as a whole. Furthermore, the more systematic understanding of the Mengerian entrepreneur also serves to clarify and overcome at least part of the apparent dichotomy between Schumpeterian and Kirznerian entrepreneurship. In doing so, we position the Mengerian entrepreneur as a potentially unifying conception from which those working within the two divergent strands may find common roots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the presence of Israel Kirzner in the History of Economic Thought and focusing on his professional engagement with other economists. His academic trajectory is contextualized on three milestones of the recent history of the Austrian School. The first one is the ending of the socialist economic calculation debate, when the Austrian was considered unconvincing due to the economics' shift to a general equilibrium model of the economy; in the aftermath of the debate, Kirzner entered at the New York University's PhD program and was mentored by Ludwig von Mises. At this point, Kirzner started to develop his ideas on entrepreneurship and to aim an audience wider than his Austrian peers. The second is the Austrian Revival in the 1970s, in which the prestigious recovery stage of the Austrian School, thanks to Kirzner assuming a leadership role in the process. The third is in the 1980s, when a more consolidated Austrian School attempts to define itself, as Kirzner retains an Austrian vision founded on the synthesis between Mises and Hayek. It is concluded that Kirzner's professional engagement was fundamental in the recovery of Austrian theory. He communicated Austrian ideas to a wider audience and synthetized Misesian and Hayekian proposals on the market process. These efforts allow us to recognize a Kirznerian view of the Austrian School, established with the traditional microeconomic theory, but including greater subjectivity on the interpretation of economic phenomena, becoming a more general, more realistic theory.

The chapter aims to enhance the understanding of the development of Kirzner’s theory of entrepreneurship. To do so, elements in Kirzner’s works published up until 1973 that enclose the central points of this theory are studied. The chapter has four sections, in addition to the introduction and conclusion, that highlight the arguments that relate to Kirzner’s theory of entrepreneurship: (i) before the publication of his 1967 paper that presents the entrepreneurial function in the market process (1960–1967); between the 1967 paper and the publication of his most important book, Competition and Entrepreneurship, in 1973 (1967–1973); (iii) in Kirzner’s latest version of entrepreneurship theory as presented in his 1973 book; and (iv) the evolution of Kirzner’s thinking. The evolution of the author’s thinking regarding equilibrium and the entrepreneur is highlighted by presenting the different stages of his theory of entrepreneurship between 1960 and 1973. MARKET equilibrium ,WAKEFULNESS ,ENTREPRENEURSHIP ,FREE enterprise ,MARKET entry - Abstract
Israel Kirzner has made profound contributions to the theory of entrepreneurship. His considerable insights address the entrepreneurial function in the market process. Kirzner belongs to the Austrian school and hence assumes subjective decision-making, incomplete sets of knowledge for all subjects, and market disequilibria. He ascribes to entrepreneurs the ability to detect through alertness market disequilibria in dynamic competitive markets. Entrepreneurs as arbitrageurs bring markets closer to equilibria even if in a dynamic competitive market an equilibrium remains a theoretical utopia. In this short paper, we outline the most important aspects of Kirzner’s entrepreneurial approach and the function entrepreneurship has in marketdriven processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENTREPRENEURSHIP ,ECONOMIC history ,ECONOMICS ,LABOR market ,SELF-employment - Abstract
Not only in the history of economic theory are changing conceptions and definitions of entrepreneurship on the agenda but also current entrepreneurship research shows oscillating contours in the semantic use of the word. The paper takes this notion as a backdrop, endeavouring to differentiate and spell out different relationships between entrepreneurship and selfemployment. In some cases, entrepreneurship and self-employment have a one-to-one fit and can be used interchangeably while in other cases, entrepreneurship does not correspond to the labour market category of self-employment or, vice versa, self-employment as practised in reality does not match entrepreneurship empirically. Freelancers working part-time or full-time, farmers, micro-entrepreneurs without employees, and "big" entrepreneurs employing a larger number of wage- or salary-dependent employees are difficult to summarize in one single box. The intention of this paper is to provide an introduction to the different semantics and to highlight and explain difficulties that arise when talking about entrepreneurship in order to systematize competing and hazy interpretations. The general discussion attempts to combine an explanation in economics, which is rather economically-functionally oriented, with an explanation with a sociologicalinstitutional focus, which is oriented more in terms of social rationalities, biographies and various other dimensions. This essay praises Gerald Gaus's The Order of Public Reason as a building block for all normative explorations into the institutional foundations of human sociability. It evaluates the normative implications put forth by Gaus in terms of the Kirzner's 'finder's keeper's ethic.' This raises a question about the relationship between the moral order and the political order that underlies market processes. Examining the role of entrepreneurship in the market process in relation to Kirzner's 'finder's keeper's principle' suggests a deeper ethical foundation that underpins the institutional conditions of 'social morality.'

This thesis has as its central purpose to contribute to the debate on the interface between marketing and entrepreneurship. They are two independent and well-established disciplines in the Administration area, but they present spaces for dialogue that provide many possibilities for reflection. In our construction, we followed a path to support the following thesis: the marketing activity has an entrepreneurial dimension that, when recognized together with its more conventional dimensions, allows to analyze the marketing process more broadly and completely. This proposition was instigated by the question of how the marketing activity can be analyzed, considering its interdisciplinarity with the entrepreneurship debate, since the marketing area represents our locus of research. To consolidate our vision, we are anchored in the entrepreneurial perspective of Israel Kirzner, a theorist of Austrian economics, whose discussion enables a different approach to this interdisciplinarity, based mainly on the consideration of the element of entrepreneurial alertness in the context of marketing. As well, we are based on the theoretical development established in the entrepreneurial marketing approach to demarcate its understanding and reaffirm the focus of convergence and emphasis on the discussion of entrepreneurial elements inherent to the marketing activity. Based on these central foundations, we offer a procedural view of the marketing activity in the configuration of a conceptual framework and contemplate an initial effort of empirical investigation in a market context (in the pet market segment). We conclude that this lens has theoretical, academic, analytical and empirical support, although new empirical efforts are one of the main guidelines for future research agendas.

Joseph Schumpeter's and Israel Kirzner's 'classical' theories of entrepreneurship have contributed much to the field of entrepreneurship but have been underutilized in the emerging field of social entrepreneurship. The argument of this paper is that the utilization of Schumpeterian and Kirznerian theories of entrepreneurship can advance the field of social entrepreneurship in two ways. The first potential contribution from utilizing their classical theories is to guide theory-building for social entrepreneurship. In this paper, a close reading and interpretation of Schumpeter's and Kirzner's work is undertaken alongside a critique of current theories of social entrepreneurship. Five essential theoretical components of Schumpeterian and Kirznerian classical entrepreneurship theories are distilled with respect to social entrepreneurship theory-building: (1) the distinction between entrepreneurial thinking and rational models of decision making; (2) the distinction between entrepreneurship and leadership, capitalism, and management; (3) the ubiquity of entrepreneurship in all human endeavors; (4) the causal functionality of entrepreneurship; and (5) the priority of the process of entrepreneurship over the instrumentality of the entrepreneur. A research proposition is then constructed on each essential theoretical component. The research propositions point to possible research directions for the field of social entrepreneurship, thus representing the second potential contribution of the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We respond to points made by Klein and Briggeman (2010), who criticize the use of definitive statements within the body of research by Israel Kirzner. We contend that Klein and Briggeman's critique fails to recognize the context of Kirzner's arguments within the broader tradition of neoclassical economics. We describe this context and explain its relevance to Kirzner's conclusions. In contrast to Klein and Briggeman, we see Kirzner as an embodiment of the tradition of political economy begun by Adam Smith. Properly understood, this tradition remains a positive social science. Klein and Briggeman's concerns regarding definitive statements are well intentioned but misplaced. Political economists should be wary of prediction with precision, but there are scientific truths of economic law - general tendencies and pattern prediction. Kirzner successfully threads these lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pautada no individualismo metodológico, analisa as condições subjetivas no processo decisório.

Daniel Klein (Klein 1997, Klein and Orsborn 2009 and Klein and Briggeman forthcoming) and Israel Kirzner (forthcoming) have been engaged in a debate concerning how economists should understand and use the terms “coordination” and “economic goodness”. Klein and Briggeman (forthcoming) contend that Kirzner suffers from excessive ambition scientifically. The authors claim Kirzner’s reliance and identification with “the Misesian image of science” threatens to discredit his more sensible contributions (e.g., market processes are driven towards progress by competitive entrepreneurial discovery). We offer a response to Klein and Briggeman’s claim that loose, vague and indeterminate forms of economic reasoning make for a more robust political economy. In doing so, we also explain the theoretical context surrounding Kirzner’s theory of the entrepreneurial market process. While we agree with Klein and Briggeman’s critique of scientism and formalism, we emphasize the nature of the debates over market theory and the price system that Kirzner was engaging in order to understand the reasons behind his methods and the theoretical insights they provide. Rather than the source of his failure, we view Kirzner’s “excessive ambitions” to provide a scientific foundation of the market process as the source of his great success as an economic theorist.

It is uncontroversial that poor public policy undermines entrepreneurial behavior and reduces public welfare. However, the exact mechanisms by which policy interventions affect entrepreneurial behavior are often unclear. This paper contrasts two competing theories of the relation between public policy and entrepreneurship: the theory of entrepreneurial incentives suggested by Israel Kirzner, and the theory of economic calculation and judgment proposed by Ludwig von Mises and Joseph T. Salerno. I argue that the alertness theory provides inadequate grounding for policy analysis because it rests on a paradoxical approach to opportunity discovery. The calculation view, on the other hand, is well-suited for application to policy problems, as it rests on a realistic view of entrepreneurial decision-making.

The paper aims to analyze the role that history of economic thought and methodological pluralism can play in Economics. In order to achieve such a goal, it presents two arguments related to the Austrian School of Economics: the role played by the entrepreneur in Kirzner's approach to the market process as an analogy to what is seen in the history of economic thought, and Hayek's arguments for liberty as a defense of freedom of research and the existence of methodological pluralism. It is argued that, under the Austrian point of view, history of economic thought and methodological pluralism might be more appreciated by economists.

This paper analyzes the theory of "entrepreneurial incentives" in the work of Israel Kirzner. It argues that there is a logical problem with the notion of profit opportunities as exogenous causal agents: Without additional assumptions, the existence of opportunities alone does not sufficiently explain the alertness of entrepreneurs. The paper considers both stronger and weaker versions of this problem. It also questions the relation between entrepreneurial incentives and the tendency toward entrepreneurial success. Finally, it provides some commentary on the relevance of entrepreneurial incentives for an overall theory of the entrepreneur, and identifies several potential solutions to the problems discussed. © 2013 Baylor University.

Israel Kirzner has been one of the leaders in fashioning an Austrian school of economics. In his rendering of the Austrian school, one finds a marriage between Friedrich Hayek’s discourse with Ludwig von Mises’s deductive, praxeological image of science of Ludwig von Mises - a marriage that seems to us somewhat forced. The Misesian image of science stakes its claims to scientific status on purported axioms and categorical, 100-percent deductive truths, as well as the supposed avoidance of any looseness in evaluative judgments. In keeping with the praxeological style of discourse, Kirzner claims that his notion of coordination can be used as a clear-cut criterion of economic goodness. Kirzner wishes to claim that gainful entrepreneurial action in the market is always coordinative. We contend that Kirzner’s efforts to be categorical and to avoid looseness are unsuccessful. We argue that looseness inheres in the economic discussion of the most important things, and associate that viewpoint with Adam Smith. We suggest that Hayek is much closer to Smith than to Mises, and that Kirzner’s invocations of Hayek’s discussions of coordination are spurious. In denying looseness and trying to cope with the brittleness of categorical claims, Kirzner becomes abstruse. His discourse erupts with problems. Kirzner has erred in rejecting the understanding of coordination held by Hayek, Ronald Coase, and their contemporaries in the field at large. Kirzner’s refraining from the looser Smithian perspective stems from his devotion to Misesianism. Beyond all the criticism, however, we affirm the basic thrust of what Kirzner says about economic processes. Once we give up the claim that voluntary profitable activity is always or necessarily coordinative, and once we make peace with the aesthetic aspect of the idea of concatenate coordination, the basic claims of Kirzner can be salvaged: Voluntary profitable activity is usually coordinative, and government intervention is usually discoordinative. But the Misesian image of science must be dropped.

Ludwig von Mises and Israel Kirzner are two of the most prominent scholars who have attempted to gain a richer understanding of how the invisible hand operates in coordinating the vast array of economic exchanges that occur on a daily basis in the actual imperfect world. These economists, among others, have sought to demonstrate how human behavior guided by prices, as well as monetary profits and losses, and under a system of private property would adjust and cope with the world's imperfections.
