Diversos estudos buscaram soluções para diminuir a ocorrência de interrupções no ambiente hospitalar, contudo, ainda pouco se sabe sobre o fenômeno e suas causas, uma vez que, pesquisas científicas tratam as consequências de interrupções com maior ênfase. Interrupções no trabalho são classificadas como causa de estresse grave entre profissionais de enfermagem, aumenta a probabilidade de esquecimento de intenções iniciais, intensifica a irritabilidade e diminui a satisfação no trabalho. Este estudo tem como proposta compreender as interrupções por meio das características da Cultura Organizacional de hospitais. Utilizou-se a Revisão Sistemática da Literatura como procedimento metodológico. As bases utilizadas foram a Web of Science e o Pubmed. A amostra final compreendeu 32 artigos. Os resultados mostram que é possível gerenciar as interrupções por meio da gestão do perfil cultural da organização hospitalar, tendo em vista que as interrupções podem impactar de forma positiva ou negativa no trabalho de profissionais de enfermagem.

Small-medium enterprises (SMEs) represent 90% of business globally. Digital Transformation (DT) affects SMEs differently from larger companies because although SMEs have more flexibility and agility for adapting to new circumstances, they also have more limited resources and specialization capabilities. Thus, it is fundamental to measure SMEs’ performance considering different perspectives. Here, we describe and analyze the state-of-the-art of DT in SMEs, focusing on performance measurement. We center on whether the tools used by SMEs encompass the triple bottom line of sustainability (i.e., environmental, social, and economic aspects). To do so, in December 2021, we performed a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) on the Web of Science and Scopus. In addition, we also explored a novel approach for SLR: topic modeling with a machine learning technique (Latent Dirichlet Allocation). The differences and interchangeability of both methods are discussed. The findings show that sustainability is treated as a separate topic in the literature. The social and environmental aspects are the most neglected. This paper contributes to sustainable development goals (SDGs) 1, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 12. A conceptual framework and future research directions are proposed. Thus, this paper is also valuable for policymakers and SMEs switching their production paradigm toward sustainability and DT.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play an essential economic role through income and employment generation as well as reducing inequalities. In this regard, continuous innovation is a pillar for guaranteeing SMEs’ survival worldwide. In Brazil, the ALI Program (Portuguese acronym for Local Innovation Agent) trains groups of SMEs to implement a continuous innovation process based on agile methodologies. This paper applied focus group methodology to investigate whether, after participating in the program, SMEs practice some innovation processes in their business and the difficulties perceived by entrepreneurs in incorporating innovation processes into their ventures. Based on the extant literature and on the focus group, it was observed that SMEs see innovation as a risk, fear innovating because of tradition, family, and/or generational context, and do not see innovation as a process suitable to be systematized with agile tools. In addition, factors such as the age of the SMEs’ leaders, the age of the SMEs, the gender of the SMEs’ leaders, and the nature of the SMEs (family business or not) may affect their openness to innovation. Recommendations are stated for practitioners (such as ALIs) to improve their training quality, policymakers to improve and create similar programs, and researchers interested in future research directions.

Freight transportation is vital to a nation’s long-term development and its performance needs to be carefully evaluated to ensure the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity of haulage infrastructure decisions. The previous attempts at benchmarking the transportation corridors and route efficiency through Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models violated homogeneity assumptions or did not provide an appropriate robustness analysis. The present paper integrates index creation and general DEA guidelines, and proposes a framework for the creation of a long-distance cargo haulage performance index, advancing towards the limitations of the previous efforts. The methodology is applied to the context of soybean transportation, one of the relevant Brazilian exporting products, during the harvest of 2015/2016, from the main mid-sized producing regions to the key exporting ports, by land transportation. The proposed approach and findings can provide insights into public and private long-term investment strategies and infrastructure policies in Brazil and other developing countries in a similar context.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to characterize real estate lease management of the São Paulo City Municipality (PMSP), the largest metropolitan region in Latin America, for the provision of public education, health and social assistance services.Design/methodology/approachIn addition, the management was also evaluated by a direct analysis of the obtained data (lease paid, area of the property, agency, zone, region, neighborhood, contract date, etc.) and by statistical regressions.FindingsThe results showed that the following: real estate properties with the greatest discrepancy of amounts paid (when compared to other amounts paid by the city and the market) are in a pulverized category, called “Others”; PMSP faces difficulties tracking expiration dates, 18.9% of the assets are still in use, though present expired contracts; the category “Education” is the most expressive in expenses; there is a limit to the correlation between the size of the real estate and the lease price paid, and very large real estate do not have proportionally higher leases; the location only directly affects the lease value if it is in the central region of the Metropolis. There is no explicit relationship for leases in other regions.Originality/valueThis work is groundbreaking for helping to consolidate the literature on real estate management in developing countries. Factors that integrate and influence the management of real estate leases for government agencies in a Latin American metropolitan area have never before been reported in the literature.

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a fundamental role in the global economy. However, SMEs usually have different characteristics from larger enterprises, e.g., essential resource restrictions, lower performance, and higher environmental impacts. This requires them to search for strategies to be more competitive and sustainable. A possible solution relies on introducing Lean-Green practices. Previous research indicated that digitalization could be an enabler of Lean. Lean can also help to achieve increased environmental performance using the Lean-Green approach. In this study, this important yet under-studied area is investigated as we consider digitalization as an enabler for implementing lean in SMEs, with a focus on Lean-Green practices. A systematic literature review is executed, following a new framework based on topic modelling for extracting the papers. The topic modelling is executed through latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) which is a machine learning technique. In methodological means, this paper represents an example of the frontier of digitalization for research activities. Regarding the investigated focus, the main findings revealed that digitalization is an enabler to Lean and to Lean-Green. As digitalization supports information sharing, it consequently fosters performance measurement systems, improvements, and value chain integration.

O e-commerce varejista (B2C – business-to-customer) cresce mais em mercados em desenvolvimento do que em desenvolvidos, porém, a maioria dos estudos na área foram destinados aos mercados desenvolvidos. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo comparar a eficiência relativa de empresas de capital aberto que atuam no varejo de produtos físicos online em um mercado desenvolvido (Canadá) e um em desenvolvimento (Brasil), separadamente, e discutir as práticas de cada mercado. Para isso, foi proposta uma abordagem instrumental nova, a partir de um modelo integrado de Análise Envoltória de Dados (DEA) e Teoria do Controle Ótimo (OCT) para medir a eficiência de custos totais de estoque, que foi, a partir da teoria de gestão lean, integrado o conceito de eficiência de capacidade (i.e, gestão dos ativos físicos). Além disso, o modelo também incorporou diretamente a inflação e, indiretamente, a margem bruta. O modelo foi aplicado a dados públicos de dois conjuntos de empresas classificadas como Varejo (Var) ou Vestuário e Bens de Consumo não Duráveis (VBCnD) – um composto por 12 empresas canadenses (CA) e outro por 17 brasileiras (BR) –, durante o período de 2016 a 2019. Depois, foi feita uma análise qualitativa do B2C das empresas. Os resultados mostraram que, em ambos os países, as empresas Var foram mais eficientes do que as VBCnD. Há indícios de que as empresas BR estavam em uma fase mais avançada da transição digital. No Brasil, as empresas Var priorizaram vendas por app (aplicativo) e marketplace (próprio ou de terceiros) e as empresas VBCnD, por app e loja virtuais. Já no Canadá, as empresas Var priorizaram lojas virtuais e app, enquanto as VBCnD, marketplace (de terceiros) e app. Não foi observada nenhuma empresa CA que controlasse um marketplace, prática comum no Var BR. No Brasil, houve a estratégia em que duas empresas atuavam em paralelo, uma especializada em B2C e outra em varejo físico, mas elas não se mostraram mais eficientes. Os resultados apontaram as empresas BR Magazine Luiza, Arezzo, Estrela e Via Varejo como benchmarks do mercado, portanto, suas melhores práticas devem ser estudadas. Retail e-commerce (B2C - business-to-customer) grows more in developing markets than in developed ones, however, most studies in the area were aimed at developed markets. This thesis aimed to compare the relative efficiency of publicly traded companies that operate in the retail of physical products online in a developed market (Canada) and another in development (Brazil), separately, and to discuss the practices of each market. To this end, a new instrumental approach was proposed, based on an integrated model of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Optimal Control Theory (OCT) to measure the efficiency of total inventory costs, based on the theory of lean management, integrating the concept of capacity efficiency (i.e., management of physical assets). Also, the model directly incorporated inflation and, indirectly, the gross margin. The model was applied to public data from two sets of companies classified as Retail (Var) or Non-Durable Clothing and Consumer Goods (VBCnD) - one composed of 12 Canadian companies (CA) and another by 17 Brazilian companies (BR) -, during the period from 2016 to 2019. Then, a qualitative analysis of the B2C of the companies was made. The results showed that, in both countries, Var companies were more efficient than VBCnD. There are indications that BR companies were at a more advanced stage of the digital transition. In Brazil, Var companies prioritized sales by app and marketplace (own or third parties) and VBCnD companies, by app and virtual store. In Canada, Var companies have prioritized virtual stores and apps, while VBCnD, marketplaces (third parties), and apps. Although it is a common practice for BR Var companies, no observed CA company controls a marketplace. In Brazil, there was a strategy in which two companies operated in parallel, one specialized in B2C and the other in physical retail, though they were not more efficient than the market. The results pointed to BR companies Magazine Luiza, Arezzo, Estrela, and Via Varejo as market benchmarks, so their best practices should be studied.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected many supply chains worldwide, including the Brazilian green-fuel ethanol supply chain. Our analysis considered sustainability variables (social, environmental, and economic) to investigate the pandemic's effects on the ethanol industries of 15 ethanol producing Brazilian states, comparing data from 2020 to 2019 and applying a novel Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA): the Double Frontier Slack-Based Measure Malmquist Productivity Index (DF-SBM MPI). The findings show that all states suffered negative impacts from the pandemic and some incurred a risk of collapsing it. The least negatively impacted states were Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso. Sao Paulo's ethanol sector is a benchmark for income derived from trade in carbon-credits by RenovaBio certified mills, while Mato Grosso's sector is able to take advantage of the largest spread between ethanol and gasoline prices, certainly a competitive advantage for ethanol producers. We recommend the implementation of public policies to support, mainly, the most affected states by assisting their mills to become environmentally certified participants to take advantage of income opportunities available in the carbon-credit trading market. We recommend, among other actions, a temporary ethanol sales tax reduction, an extension of debt repayment schedules, and stimulating an increase in the fleet of flex-fuel vehicles.

Despite the relevance of these themes for the soy production chain, No-Tillage System, Precision Agriculture, and Circular Economy (CE) are still little studied jointly in the Brazilian context. Less focus has been given to the relationship between the three concepts so far. For this reason, this paper aimed to analyze the contribution of Precision Agriculture and No-Tillage to the achievement of the CE, through the mapping of soy production. The method used was the literature review of the specialized references and the case study, to demonstrate the possibility of a more sustainable production system in a rural property in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The results showed that the application of the CE generated better use of the production residues, in addition to the reduction of agricultural inputs used in the rural property. Consequently, it was found that the application of these concepts made the business more profitable for the rural producer.

Objective: to investigate the cost efficiency of inventory management for publicly home appliance retail companies in the Brazilian market that operate, among other channels, with B2C (Business-to-Costumer) and discuss the possible impacts of e-commerce on inventory management. Method: the first step, construction of a descriptive summary of Magazine Luiza and seven other competitors; the second step, analysis of the optimal cost efficiency of companies' inventory management, through an integrated and dynamic model of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Optimal Control Theory (OCT). Amounts declared in the Quarterly Financial Statements between the fourth quarter of 2010 and the second quarter of 2018 were considered. Main Results: the discovery of best practices and the fact that, despite its extraordinary appreciation, Magazine Luiza was not a reference in inventory management and its costs during the analyzed period as a whole. Relevance/Originality: this article is an initial step to address the lack of studies on e-commerce for emerging markets and inventory management and its costs for e-commerce. Methodological Contributions: the proposition of a methodology that can be used by other researchers to assess the cost efficiency of inventory management and the impact of e-commerce, highlighting best practices.

As supply chain management involves several criteria, its performance evaluation is a challenge for industrial managers. Researchers have proposed several approaches for such evaluations, among them, Balanced Scorecard (BSC) highlights. Academic papers on BSC applications for evaluating supply chain performance has an expressively increased in recent years. Considering that examining published papers on a topic is a way of monitoring the emergence of a new field, this study aims to explore, through bibliometry, papers published in indexed journals (SCOPUS and Web of Science databases). This paper weaves an overview of academic production and study trends on BSC for performance evaluation of supply chains. Findings help researchers and managers to understand the state of the art, to identify gaps and to identify future trends. The results also showed the maturation of studies over the years. The predominance of publications in journals with impact factor (Thomson Reuters) also has been noticed. The development of the theme in emerging countries can be useful for increasing the competitiveness of their companies. In summary, this study is helpful for influencing future studies and publications of researchers interested in performance evaluation of supply chains based on BSC and may orient new researchers so that they directly know which journals to consult and which technical procedures to explore.

The purpose of this paper is to present an allocative control Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model to measure the efficiency of systems with variables that have a relationship to each other, such as inventory control systems. The static model includes intermediate variables (a common variable class in dynamics models). It is applied to 647 companies (Decision Making Units – DMU) from South and North America (mainly USA, Brazil, and Chile), considering their production inventory systems with data from accounting variables. The model minimizes the inventory and production costs to calculate allocative efficiency. The output is demand, the input is production, and the intermediate variable is inventory. Their costs are in the objective function. There is a variational constraint from Optimal Control Theory (OCT) to describe the relationship between demand, production, and inventory. In summary, the model calculates the efficiency preventing the possibility of a projection that ignores the relationship between these variables. The proposed model is relevant because this relationship always occurs in a practical sense in inventory control systems.

Most European countries have committed to ambitious emissions reduction goals. Energy generation in particular is responsible for more than 30% of global emissions, where significant focus has been placed on renewable energy generation, including biomass. On the one hand, there are countries, like the UK, where the biomass stock is insufficient to meet the demand; on the other hand, there are countries, like Brazil, where the stock significantly exceeds the demand. To promote a natural symbiosis, it is necessary to take on the challenge of transporting biomass through long distances in an environmentally and economically efficient manner. This paper aims to assess the efficiency of alternative pathways of international biomass supply-chains. The alternatives involve different biomass origin regions, transportation modes, export ports and processing technologies, including torrefaction. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been used for the first time to assess the efficiency of the alternative biomass supply chain pathways in a Latin American context, considering multiple-criteria relating to economic and environmental performance simultaneously, such as the biomass delivered cost, the environmental impact and the fossil energy consumption. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was performed to analyse the robustness of the results under uncertainty in parameter values. The DEA approach presented can assist the process of planning biomass sourcing and improve decision-making under multiple decision criteria. The results can support medium- and long-term strategic decisions for decision- and policy-makers.

Renewable energy generation reduces carbon emissions and responds to the targets for renewable energy sources of most EU countries; it also enhances infrastructure resilience and creates flexibility of the energy matrix. However, the availability of biomass may drastically differ from country to country within the EU. In most cases, the most challenged countries to achieve high targets for sustainability are not those with a sufficiently large supply of biomass. Because of this, it is necessary to design new biomass supply chain networks and improve the existing networks. This paper aims to assess the efficiency of biomass alternative pathways of the supply network from South America to Europe. In this particular work, three scenarios of biomass using two transportation systems were investigated, i.e., transportation of wood logs, pellets and torrefied biomass in the country of origin by truck and train transportation. Efficiency was measured using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model derived from CCR. The results present the most efficient supply chain alternatives and highlight the feasibility of establishing closer cooperation between Brazil and countries in Europe for green energy generation. This information can assist in the process of planning and decision-making to determine the practicability of the implementation of torrefaction facilities using the most efficient logistical pathways

Design/methodology/approach This paper aims to determine routes from main producing micro-regions to main export ports, specifically using slack-based measure and variables that represent the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental). The choice of variables was guided by literature review and analyzed through the principal component analysis. After the application of the model, the quantitative tiebreaking method of the composite index is applied. Findings The findings are coherent with a global report that compares soybean transportation in both countries (Brazil and USA). Efficient routes and corridors tend to present short distance truck trips and long distance train or barge trips. The efficiency of the inland waterway trips depends on how many barges are used in the same expedition. Routes with more than three modes tend to be inefficient which suggest that there is a limit for multimodality. Originality/value Corridor benchmarking is a rare topic in the literature and previous works normally focus on some specific and limited corridor performance characteristics, such as cost. The main contribution of this research is that it expands the discussion regarding corridor benchmarking and it focuses on efficiency as a whole. The paper also proposes a method that can be applied in different logistics contexts, like expanding the study to different countries. More specifically, this method could be used in infrastructure investments programs. A presente pesquisa está inserida na questão da infraestrutura logística para o transporte de carga a granel, especificamente a soja, a partir das principais mesorregiões produtoras dos dois maiores produtores mundiais, Brasil e Estados Unidos, até os principais portos exportadores. Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a eficiência das rotas e corredores nacionais de transporte de soja, levando em consideração os três pilares da sustentabilidade (econômico, social e ambiental). O método parte de uma revisão de literatura sobre o tema, seguido de uma explanação sobre eficiência, por meio da Análise Envoltória de Dados (DEA), e uma contextualização do cenário de escoamento em ambos os países. Foram determinadas 72 rotas brasileiras e 30 norte-americanas com diversas composições de modais. Os dados foram analisados por correlação e análise de componentes principais (PCA) e teste de Wilcoxon. Em seguida, as variáveis foram inseridas num modelo DEA de Slack-Based Measure (SBM), que minimiza os inputs (variáveis de entrada) e maximiza outputs (variáveis de saída) simultaneamente. Foi aplicado, como técnica quantitativa de desempate, o índice composto. Os resultados mostraram que as rotas norte-americanas foram as mais eficientes. Além disso, combinações de curtos trajetos de caminhão e longas rotas de modais hidroviários ou ferroviários estavam entre as eficientes. Ou seja, os resultados se mostraram coerentes com a literatura e a expectativa de especialistas. Em resumo, o uso da DEA pode notadamente fortalecer a análise de rotas e corredores domésticos nacionais usados para o escoamento produtivo da soja a granel e pode direcionar políticas de investimento públicas e privadas. This research is focused on the logistics infrastructure issue used for bulk transportation, specifically soybeans, from the main producing municipalities of the world biggest producers, Brazil and USA, to the key exporting ports. This dissertation aims to analyze the efficiency of routes and corridors, taking into account the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social and environmental). The method starts with a literature review of corridor benchmarking, efficiency measurement through data envelopment analysis and contextualization of transportation scenarios in both countries. It was identified 72 routes in Brazil and 30 in the US, considering several combinations of transportation mode (road, inland waterway and rail). Data were analyzed through correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), and Wilcoxon Test. Subsequently, variables were inserted in Slack-Based Measure (SBM) DEA model. This model simultaneously minimizes inputs and maximizes outputs. It was applied the quantitative tiebreaking method of the compound index. The results showed that the American routes among the most efficient ones. In addition, the combinations of short trips of trucks and long trips of barges or trains were also among the most efficient. In other words, the results were coherent with literature and expectation of specialists. In summary, it is clear that the use of DEA can noticeably improve the strength of the analysis of national domestic routes and corridors used in the productive chain of bulk soybeans.

A alimentação adequada é direito fundamental do ser humano, inerente à dignidade da pessoa humana e indispensável à realização dos direitos consagrados na constituição federal, devendo o poder público adotar as políticas e ações que se façam necessárias para promover e garantir a segurança alimentar e nutricional da população. Dentre as muitas políticas brasileiras elaboradas para combater a fome desataca-se o Bolsa Família, implantado em 2003. Na literatura há indícios de que uma das causas da queda da insegurança alimentar foi o aumento da renda, onde os programas de transferência de renda como o Bolsa Família foram muito importantes. O objetivo desse artigo é determinar a eficiência relativa do Bolsa Família nas unidades federativas para a segurança alimentar. O método aplicado foi a Análise Envoltória de Dados (DEA) – Modelo Slack-Based Measure (SBM) assumindo Retornos Variáveis de Escala (VRS) para os anos de 2004, 2009 e 2013, em conjunto com análise de janela, e o método de desempate Índice Composto de Leta et al. (2005). Assim, os resultados após desempate mostraram que o estado onde o Bolsa Família foi considerado eficiente no período foi Santa Catarina.

Aim: If companies manage their inventory inefficiently, inventory costs can increase significantly due to shortages, overstocking, and risks. Inventory management is critical for company’s success which, in turn, impacts on countries’ development. This paper aims to investigate the efficiency of inventory control systems of companies from Brazil and Chile through Optimal Control Theory and Data Envelopment Analysis.Design/Research methods: Data was collected from Chilean and Brazilian companies covering different industries in which both countries are mostly dependent A new approach using OCT and DEA is applied for dealing with inventory, production, and demand in Dynamic DEA model to benchmark companies’ production-inventory systems.Conclusions/findings: The results show efficient companies among evaluated industries. Such companies are related mainly to Brazilian commerce and Chilean exports. Based on findings, it was possible to identify patterns and relationship among companies and its inventory management.Originality/value of the article: This paper fills a gap in studies including demand, production, and inventory in Dynamic DEA by using OCT to forewarn unrealistic results and observing companies’ behavior. Besides that, this approach is particularly useful for developing countries in this context, determining benchmarks for the most inefficient firms in each sector.Implications of the research: The results show (1) which companies should focus more on improving inventory management, (2) which companies should be used as benchmarks, and (3) it highlights the reasons of different performance of companies in each country.Limitations of the research: For future research, it is suggested including variables and analysis of social and environmental impacts.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar a análise envoltória de dados (DEA) como uma possível ferramenta para comparar a eficiência de rotas de transporte de carga. Os Estados Unidos e o Brasil produzem mais de 80% dos grãos de soja do mundo. Isso representa 1,7% das exportações americanas, e 10% das exportações brasileiras, que é uma economia menor. Transportar a soja, entre outros produtos de exportação, das fazendas até os principais portos, de forma mais eficiente, é o foco dos programas de investimento brasileiros. Uma ferramenta consolidada para a comparação de eficiência entre rotas irá ajudar os tomadores de decisão a direcionar investimentos. Este artigo determina as rotas das principais microrregiões produtoras até os principais portos de ambos os países, considerando a colheita de 2014. O uso de DEA SBM (Slack Baseado Measure) e as variáveis iniciais são propostos. As variáveis são validadas por meio de correlação, regressão linear e análise de componentes principais (PCA). Após a aplicação do modelo, foi usado o método de desempate quantitativo do índice composto (LETA et al, 2005). Os resultados são coerentes com a literatura (SALIN, 2015) (OLIVEIRA e CICOLIN, 2016).

Institutional markets have evolved as one alternative way for smallholder farmers to access the market and supply their produce at a known in advance price and quantity. This helps planning agricultural operations and provides security of income, which is critical for the farmer livelihoods. One such example is the PNAE government feeding program in Brazil, where schools source raw materials and ingredients from local smallholder farmers for school meals. This work presents a Decision Support System (DSS) supporting farmers decisions on which schools to supply, with which products and how to organise the logistical activities, to maximise the net income from participation in these markets. The DSS is applied after the farmers have knowledge which bids they have been successful in, and therefore they have clarity on the potential supply areas. The decisions at this stage can be quite complex, with several factors to be considered simultaneously, such as product range, quantities and price for each school that a bid was won, distance and logistical costs, and logistical synergies when delivered quantities in the same area are larger. At the same time there are constraints such as the land, transportation and resource availability. The proposed DSS is novel in supporting smallholder farmer decisions on supplying institutional markets. The results of the DSS application for a specific smallholder farmer settlement in Brazil are presented and discussed, to assess its applicability.
