Muscle synergy analysis via surface electromyography (EMG) is useful to study muscle coordination in motor learning, clinical diagnosis, and neurorehabilitation. However, current methods to extract muscle synergies in the upper limb suffer from two major issues. First, the necessary normalization of EMG signals is performed via maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), which requires maximal isometric force production in each muscle. However, some individuals with motor impairments have difficulties producing maximal effort in the MVC task. In addition, the MVC is known to be highly unreliable, with widely different forces produced in repeated measures. Second, synergy extraction in the upper limb is typically performed with a multidirection reaching task. However, some participants with motor impairments cannot perform this task because it requires precise motor control. In this study, we proposed a new isometric rotating task that does not require precise motor control or large forces. In this task, participants maintain a cursor controlled by the arm end-point force on a target that rotates at a constant angular velocity at a designated force level. To relax constraints on motor control precision, the target is widened and blurred. To obtain a reference EMG value for normalization without requiring maximal effort, we estimated a linear relationship between joint torques and muscle activations. We assessed the reliability of joint torque normalization and synergy extraction in the rotating task in young neurotypical individuals. Compared with normalization with MVC, joint torque normalization allowed reliable EMG normalization at low force levels. In addition, the extraction of synergies was as reliable and more stable than with the multidirection reaching task. Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate transient bimanual effects on the force control capabilities of the paretic and non-paretic arms in individuals post stroke across submaximal and maximal force control tasks. Methods Fourteen chronic stroke patients (mean age = 63.8 ± 15.9; stroke duration = 38.7 ± 45.2 months) completed two isometric force control tasks: (a) submaximal control and (b) maximal sustained force production. Participants executed both tasks with their wrist and fingers extending across unimanual (paretic and non-paretic arms) and bimanual conditions. Mean force, force variability using coefficient of variation, force regularity using sample entropy were calculated for each condition. Results During the submaximal force control tasks (i.e., 5, 25, and 50% of maximum voluntary contraction), the asymmetrical mean force between the paretic and non-paretic arms decreased from unimanual to bimanual conditions. The asymmetry of force variability and regularity between the two arms while executing unimanual force control tended to decrease in the bimanual condition because of greater increases in the force variability and regularity for the non-paretic arm than those for the paretic arm. During the maximal sustained force production tasks (i.e., 100% of maximum voluntary contraction), the paretic arm increased maximal forces and decreased force variability in the bimanual condition, whereas the non-paretic arm reduced maximal forces and elevated force variability from unimanual to bimanual conditions. Conclusions The current findings support a proposition that repetitive bimanual isometric training with higher execution intensity may facilitate progress toward stroke motor recovery.

• Visual feedback improved bilateral ankle-dorsiflexion force control performances. • Interlimb force coordination was enhanced when visual feedback was available. • Stabilizing synergy correlated with improved bilateral force control performances. • Visuomotor processing may be important for fine motor control between both feet. This study investigated the potential effects of visual feedback and force level on bilateral force control capabilities in the lower limbs. Thirty-nine healthy young adults performed bilateral ankle-dorsiflexion isometric force control tasks for different visual feedback conditions, including continuous visual feedback (CVF) and withdrawal of visual feedback (WVF), indicating the removal of visual feedback on force outputs during the task and force level conditions (i.e., 10 % and 40 % of the maximum voluntary contraction). Bilateral force control capabilities were estimated using force accuracy, variability, regularity, and absolute power in 0–4 Hz and interlimb coordination by cross-correlation with time lag and uncontrolled manifold (UCM) variables. Correlation analyses determined the relationship between changes in bilateral force control capabilities and interlimb coordination from the CVF to WVF conditions. The findings revealed better bilateral force control capabilities in the CVF condition as indicated by less force error, variability, regularity, absolute power in 0–4 Hz, and advanced interlimb force coordination. From CVF to WVF conditions, increased bad variability correlated with greater force control deficits. While asymmetries have been observed between the dominant and non-dominant legs, it is unclear whether they have different abilities in isometric force control (IFC). The purpose of this study was to compare ankle IFC between the legs. IFC is important for stabilization rather than object manipulation, and people typically use their non-dominant leg for stabilization tasks. Additionally, studies suggested that a limb can better acquire a motor task when the control mechanism of the task is related to what the limb is specialized for. We hypothesized that the non-dominant leg would better (1) control ankle IFC with speed and accuracy, and (2) acquire an ankle IFC skill through direct learning and transfer of learning. Two participant groups practiced an IFC task using either their dominant or non-dominant ankle. In a virtual environment, subjects moved a cursor to hit 24 targets in a maze by adjusting the direction and magnitude of ankle isometric force with speed (measured by the time required to hit all targets or movement time) and accuracy (number of collisions to a maze wall). Both groups demonstrated similar movement time and accuracy between the dominant and non-dominant limbs before practicing the task. After practice, both groups showed improvement in both variables on both the practiced and non-practiced sides (p < .01), but no between-group difference was detected in the degree of improvement on each side. From the conceptual and methodological framework of the dynamical systems approach, force control results from complex interactions of various subsystems yielding observable behavioral fluctuations, which comprise both deterministic (predictable) and stochastic (noise-like) dynamical components. Here, we investigated these components contributing to the observed variability in force control in groups of participants differing in age and expertise level. To this aim, young (18 –25 yr) as well as late middle-aged (55-65 yr) novices and experts (precision mechanics) performed a force maintenance and a force modulation task. Results showed that whereas the amplitude of force variability did not differ across groups in the maintenance tasks, in the modulation task it was higher for late middle-aged novices than for experts and higher for both these groups than for young participants. Within both tasks and for all groups, stochastic fluctuations were lowest where the deterministic influence was smallest. However, although all groups showed similar dynamics underlying force control in the maintenance task, a group effect was found for deterministic and stochastic fluctuations in the modulation task. The latter findings imply that both components were involved in the observed group differences in the variability of force fluctuations in the modulation task. These findings suggest that between groups the general characteristics of the dynamics do not differ in either task and that force control is more affected by age than by expertise. However, expertise seems to counteract some of the age effects. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Stochastic and deterministic dynamical components contribute to force production. Dynamical signatures differ between force maintenance and cyclic force modulation tasks but hardly between age and expertise groups. Differences in both stochastic and deterministic components are associated with group differences in behavioral variability, and observed behavioral variability is more strongly task dependent than person dependent. This study investigated continuous visuomotor tracking capabilities between athletes and non-athlete controls using isometric force control paradigm. Nine female athletes and nine female age-matched controls performed unilateral hand-grip force control tasks with their dominant and non-dominant hands at 10% and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), respectively. Three conventional outcome measures on force control capabilities included mean force, force accuracy, and force variability, and we additionally calculated two nonlinear dynamics variables including force regularity using sample entropy and force stability using maximal Lyapunov exponent. Finally, we performed correlation analyses to determine the relationship between nonlinear dynamics variables and conventional measures for each group. The findings indicated that force control capabilities as indicated by three conventional measures were not significantly different between athlete and non-athlete control groups. However, the athletes revealed less force regularity and greater force stability across hand conditions and targeted force levels than those in non-athlete controls. The correlation analyses found that increased force regularity (i.e., less sample entropy values) at 10% of MVC and decreased force regularity (i.e., greater sample entropy values) at 40% of MVC were significantly related to improved force accuracy and variability for the athlete group, and these patterns were not observed in the non-athlete control group. These findings suggested that the athletes may use different adaptive force control strategies as indicated by nonlinear dynamics tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
