This work focuses on analysis of optical transmittance images, which are captured at the end of the wire section of a pilot paper machine. The first priority is to evaluate the capability to estimate formation and floc size on the basis of optical transmittance and secondly analyse how process conditions affect them. Basis weight is one of the most important quality parameters in paper manufacturing. Optical transmittance seems to provide information about basis weight. Reliable evaluation of basis weight on the basis of image data would probably mean a new level of CD and MD profile controls. Formation means small-scale basis weight variation. Good formation e.g. improves the tensile strength and printability of produced paper. Camera unit located above and light source under the paper web at the end of the wire section to capture transmittance images, which were used to calculate several image features. Process and laboratory data were combined with image features for data based analysis. An increase in the basis weight, ash content and the dryness of the paper web seem to reduce the value of optical transmittance. On-line measured image features of optical transmittance were rather congruent with off-line defined reference values, especially the illumination corrected standard deviation of optical transmittance, which is connected to paper formation. Increased flow of headbox and lower consistency of pulp seemed to cause better formation as fewer flocs are formed. However, on the basis of analysis it is difficult to determine process conditions which provide with good formation and small floc size, because of the numerous interactions of process variables, the basis weight varied during experiments and it was difficult to keep other variables except the studied one constant.

The objective of this work was to study the effect of adjustable process parameters on wood loss and bark removal in tumble drum debarking. The effect of capacity on the size distribution of the chips was studied in order to determine the optimal capacity for both the debarking and chipping sub-processes. The final aim was to propose a control strategy to optimise the processes by adapting their parameters according to the quality of the raw material. When the research started, earlier automation systems had focused on keeping the process alive, and economic values such as wood loss were not considered important. The process is usually controlled manually and shifts have different ways to manage it, which are based on trial and error. Bark removal in chemical pulp mills is usually higher than the values recommended in the literature, which in turn causes log breaking in the drum and increases wood loss. Even a small reduction in wood loss could have a substantial financial outcome. The lack of raw materials some time ago and the recession nowadays have highlighted the importance of more efficient log use. Data survey techniques were employed to reveal the interactions between drum variables from noisy measurements. Wood room data were analysed by modelling and deriving conclusions from the resulting parameters. In addition, log breaking and the size distribution of the chips were analysed under different process conditions. A pilot-scale drum was used to study residence time and the mechanical abrasion of logs. The results of this work indicated that the ratio of the volume of logs in the drum to capacity determines the residence time of the logs in the drum. Other variables influence the volume of logs in the drum, which together with capacity determine the residence time of logs in the drum, which affects wood loss and bark removal. The effect of capacity on the size distribution of the chips was not unambiguous, however, and it was therefore recommended to operate wood room at high capacity, because this reduces wood loss and increases annual production. The proposed control strategy adapts the residence time of logs in the drum to the quality of the debarked raw material by controlling the position of the closing gate. In addition, the control strategy adjusts the rotating speed of the drum using an open loop control. The results can be used to optimise the wood room process parameters. If the problem in wood room is excessive debarking, the residence time of the logs can be reduced and the rotating speed of the drum lowered. In this way the logs will be damaged less and wood loss will be reduced. Bark removal requirements in mechanical pulp mills are high, and the process parameters can be adapted to avoid problems in the subsequent processes due to excessive bark.

Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää rumpukuorinnan puuhäviöiden pienentämismahdollisuuksia mallipohjaisten menetelmien avulla. Projektin kuluessa tutkimusta laajennettiin kuorimon toiminnan ja säädön kehittämiseen ja erilaisten kustannussäästömahdollisuuksien selvittämiseen. Tutkimus tehtiin pääosin UPM-Kymmenen tehtaalla Pietarsaaressa, mutta neljän viimeisen kuukauden aikana tutkimusta tehtiin myös Rauman Metsä-Botnian kuorimolla. Teoriaosuudessa kerrotaan lyhyesti kuorinnan syistä ja puuhäviöiden syntymisestä. Raportissa esitetään puuhäviöihin vaikuttavat tekijät sekä tarkasteltujen kuorimoiden uudet ajotapasuositukset, joilla puuhäviöt saadaan minimoitua, sekä ajatus kuorinnan optimoivasta säädöstä, joka kompensoi puunlaadun vaihtelun ulkoisena häiriönä. Tutkimusten mukaan puuhäviöitä saadaan vähennettyä puiden riittävän kuoriutumisen kärsimättä, kun lasketaan rummun kierrosnopeutta ja minimoidaan puiden kuorinta-aika. Kuorinta-aika saadaan minimoitua pitämällä kapasiteetti korkeana ja sulkuportti alhaalla. Optimaalisen täyttöasteen määrittäminen riippuu hyvin pitkälti rummun rakenteesta, joten se on tehtävä tehdaskohtaisesti. Muodostut puuhäviömallit toimivat melko hyvin, mutta vielä paremmaksi niiden toiminta saataisiin, jos käytössä olisi reaaliaikaista tietoa puunlaadusta. Koska tätä ei ole saatavilla, projektissa pyrittiin määrittämään puunlaatua kuvaavia tunnuslukuja. Tutkimuksien mukaisella "hellemmällä" kuorinnalla voidaan saavuttaa satojen tuhansien eurojen säästöt vuodessa kuorimoa kohden. Lisäksi hakkeen laatu paranee, kun puita vaurioitetaan rummussa vähemmän. Hakkeen parempi laatu näkyy myös lopputuotteen laadussa. Optimaalinen kuorinta edellyttää korkeaa kapasiteettia. Tämä on hyvä uutinen tehtaille: kustannussäästöt ovat mahdollisia ja jatkossa voidaan vastata yhä korkeampiin tuotantovaatimuksiin taloudellisella kuorinnalla. Lisäksi kierrosnopeuden alentamisen myötä säästyy merkittävissä määrin sähköä. Tutkimus kuului osana TEKES:n rahoittamaan projektiin Keiton, pesun ja happidelignifioinnin älykäs ohjaus (KUHA), joka puolestaan oli Oulun yliopiston osuus Prosessi-Integraatio-teknologiaohjelmaan kuuluvassa hankkeessa Integroitu prosessilaitteiden ja prosessien hallinta. Yhteistyökumppaneina olivat UPM-Kymmene, Metso Automation Oy ja Metso Paper Pori Oy.

Tiivistelmä Kuorinnan tavoitteena on valmistaa tasalaatuista raaka-ainetta haketukseen ja edelleen keittämölle. Puuhäviöitä syntyy, kun esikäsittelylinjaston kuorimarummussa kuoren irtoamisen lisäksi myös osa puusta silppuuntuu ja poistuu kuoren mukana kuoriaukkojen kautta. Kuorinnan tavoitteena on mahdollisimman suuri kuorintapuhtaus samalla kun puuhäviöt pysyvät pienenä. Optimaaliseen kuorinta-asteeseen päästään säätämällä kuorintarummun nopeutta ja täyttöastetta puulaadun ja rummun mitoituksen mukaan. Työssä tavoitteena ollut kuorinnan optimointi perustuu Valmet Woodhandlingin VisiBark-mittariin, joka soveltuu havupuun erivärisen kuoren ja puuaineksen erottamiseen toisistaan. Klusterointimenetelmänä työssä on käytetty Matlab FuzzyEqu Toolboxin FCM-funktiota (sumeaa keskiarvoistettua klusterointia) kunkin klusterivaihtoehdon kehittämiseen. Klusteroinnilla pyritään jakamaan todellinen rummulta saatu mittausdata eri puulaatujen mukaisiin klustereihin. Puun laatu vaihtelee varsin voimakkaasti, kun rummulle tulee tuoretta puuta suoraan hakkuutyömaalta ja väliin taas puukentällä jo pitempään kuivanutta ja osin jopa lahonnutta puutavaraa. Puulaatujen vaihteluväli voi olla erittäinkin lyhyt, jos samaan aikaan linjalle ajetaan puuta eri kohteista. Koska puun laadullisesta määrityksestä ei ole vielä saatavissa mittausdataa, joka voitaisiin liittää yhdeksi muuttujaksi, päädyttyyn jakamaan data vain kolmeen klusteriin. Tällöin muodostuivat mallit normaaleille ajotilanteille, jossa puuhäviöt pysyvät kohtuullisina sekä häiriötilanteille. Häiriötilanteissa puuhäviöt joko kohosivat huomattavasti normaalia suuremmiksi tai jäivät erittäin pieniksi tilanteissa, joissa rummun kierrosnopeus jouduttiin ajamaan alas. Työn tuloksena todettiin klusterien pohjalta tehtyjen mallien erottuvan toisistaan. Raportti on osa projektia "Keiton, pesun ja happidelignifioinnin älykäs ohjaus ja kuitulinjan eri prosessien yhteistoiminnan tarkempi hallinta" (KUHA), joka kuuluu osana TEKES:n rahoittamaan Prosessi-integraatio -teknologiaohjelmaan.

In this report, different types of fuzzy models have been developed from linguistic equations models. Different shapes of membership functions were compared: triangular and trapezoidal membership functions as well as their non-linear modifications were used. ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) method for Takagi-Sugeno type models was used and clustering for Singleton fuzzy models. Also the different number of singleton values in singleton fuzzy models and by using fuzzy relations different amount of rules was compared. The data-based approaches are based on data from the Cooking Liquor Analyser CLA 2000. Linguistic equations (LE) work well for this data. For the test data, the performance of the real-valued LE model was the best although a better fitting accuracy with training data was obtained by constructing Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models with the ANFIS method. There are also overfitting problems with the TS models. Easy configuration and robustness are the main benefits of the LE models. The fitting performance must be compared to the number of modelling parameters.
