Abstract

We investigated the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of a ternary intermetallic compound AlFeSi composed only of abundant elements. First-principles band structure calculations implied that the target compound AlFeSi forms a narrow band gap of a few hundred meV near the Fermi level, indicating that both p- and n-type thermoelectric properties can be obtained by shifting the chemical potential. We present the thermoelectric properties of the narrow-band-gap intermetallic compound AlFeSi, which was synthesized by arc melting and spark plasma sintering. The conduction type could be controlled through changing the Al/Si ratio. The measured Seebeck coefficients were +55 and −90 μV K for p- and n-type materials, respectively. The obtained power factor was 370-400 μW m K in a mid-temperature region for both p- and n-type materials. Because of the low crystal symmetry of AlFeSi, the phonon thermal conductivity at 300 K exhibited a relatively low value of 4.5-5.5 W m K, despite being composed of relatively light elements. The estimated dimensionless figure of merit was found to be less than 0.04, which should be largely enhanced for practical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two-dimensional arrays of circular air jets impinging on a heat transfer surface parallel to the jet orifice plate are considered. The jet flow, after impingement, is constrained to exit in a single direction along the channel formed by the jet orifice plate and the heat transfer surface. The configurations considered are intended to model those of interest in current and contemplated gas turbine airfoil midchord cooling applications. The effects of an initial crossflow which approaches the array through an upstream extension of the channel are considered. Flow distributions as well as heat transfer coefficients and adiabatic wall temperatures resolved to one streamwise hole spacing were measured as a function of the initial crossflow rate and temperature relative to the jet flow rate and temperature. Both Nusselt number profiles and dimensionless adiabatic wall temperature (effectiveness) profiles are presented and discussed. Special test results which show a significant reduction of jet orifice discharge coefficients owing to the effect of a confined crossflow are also presented, along with a flow distribution model which incorporates those effects. A nonuniform array flow distribution model is developed and validated.

Abstract

To model the impingement cooled mid-chord region of gas turbine airfoils in cases where an initial crossflow is present, the paper presents experimentally determined flow distributions for jet arrays with ten spanwise rows of holes, which range from uniform to highly nonuniform. The jet flow after impingement is constrained to exit in a single direction along the channel formed by the jet orifice plate and the impingement surface. The streamwise distributions and crossflow velocities are presented for ratios of the initial crossflow rate to the total jet flow rate ranging from zero to unity. For crossflow to jet velocity ratios greater than a value somewhat less than unity, jet orifice discharge coefficients do not remain constant, but decrease significantly, showing a secondary dependence on z/d, where z is the channel height and d is the jet hole diameter.
