Abstract

TV newspapers called PRESENT are multimedia information broadcasting services which provide information programs consisting of text, still pictures, video, and sound. PRESENT is an important application of ISDB and provides interactive programs with easy-operation. This paper first describes the basic functions of the multimedia information broadcasting services, interactive program presentation, multimedia structuring, and indexing. Second, systems for realizing interactive presentation in the broadcasting services are discussed and the stored reception system is found to be appropriate for the PRESENT system. Multimedia structuring methods are also discussed and the layout structure, the logical structure, and the hyper-link structure for PRESENT are optimized. It is shown that the automatic indexing method plays an important role in providing effective information access for users. Finally, these services are tested using the experimental PRESENT system which is designed to use satellite broadcast data channels.

Abstract

Given that broadcasting is generally characterized by real-time one-way transmission, it is an essential task for this medium to provide interactivity developed in the fields of telecommunications and computers when introducing multimedia into a broadcasting system. This paper discusses how to use and implement interactivity in broadcasting services. It further discusses what functions are required for introducing interactivity into broadcasting. The practicality of interactive services in one-way broadcasting transmission is clarified. A simulation system of ISDB services to evaluate viewers' human interface was developed. The results of experiments using the simulation system are also discussed. it is shown that user-friendly ISDB services can be achieved.

Abstract

Digitalization of television broadcasting results in an increasing number of broadcast channels and is malting general viewers difficult to do program select operations. In view of this, we have developed a TV reception navigation system that helps different types of viewers to easily select TV programs in accordance with their occasional mood and interests. The system recommends programs suited for viewers' allocation of living hours, while providing an electronic program guide (EPG) personalized for their interests. It also incorporates a facility to search a program schedule with keywords such as person names and place names, as well as a facility to modify the viewer profile according to the selection result for personalization purpose. Experimental tests on this system have been conducted in the manner that testing evaluators select programs among approximately 100 channels of actual satellite and terrestrial broadcasting in Japan. System functions have been evaluated in terms of different types of programs aired in the morning, afternoon and evening. The result of subjective evaluation tests reveals the usefulness of this personal TV reception navigation system. Abstract

A TV navigation system has been developed to make it easier for viewers to watch television in a multi-channel era. It enables viewers to watch programs recommended by the system as well as to select programs using a personalized electronic program guide (EPG) and retrieve programs with a personal filter. The system combines a mechanism for recommending programs in accordance with the preferences and mood of the viewer with personalized program sorting and retrieving in an easy-to-use format. Subjective evaluation tests were held to evaluate the impressions of general viewers with regard to operating this TV navigation system and benefiting from its use. It was found that program recommendations were helpful and that the types of programs desired by a viewer and their method of selection differed according to time of day. First, five simple specimens composed of varioustypes of steel column bases and a concrete base block were tested under pure compression toexamine the behavior and the failure mechanism of base plate and stress distribution in concreteunder base plate. Secondly, three column base specimens composed of a column of H-shapebase plate with 16 mm thickness and reinforced concrete base block were tested to investigatethe elastic-plastic behavior and the ultimate load carrying capacity and to establish the designmethod based on the ultimate strength, and certified that the additive method for a design pro-posed by the first author would be available with a sufficient accuracy.
