1. Immuno-Potentiator Effect Of Rapeseed Or Soybean Oil With Foot And Mouth Disease Vaccine In Calves

Abstract

One of the effective recommendation for control of Foot and Mouth disease virus is the proper vaccination by a highly potent vaccine. Such a vaccine should be specific to the circulated field serotype of foot and mouth disease virus inducing rapid, highly protective immunity with a long duration. This research is concerned with using plant extracted oil adjuvants prepared from rapeseed oil mixed with or without Ginseng extracts and from Soybean oil as well with or without Ginseng extracts. Some humoral and cellular immune responses were compared using the different plant-extracted oils and the mineral-based adjuvant called Montanide oil ISA 206 after one dose vaccination of the prepared vaccines at different interval times post vaccinations. Lymphocyte blastogenesis, Interleukin-6, and Interleukin-12 showed higher expression in calves vaccinated by FMDV serotypes (O pan Asia, A Iran O5, and SAT2 / EGY/2012) with plant extract oil containing Ginseng extract comparable to that of plant extracts without Ginseng and Montanide oil ISA 206 adjuvants vaccines. It was found that FMD vaccine adjuvant with ginseng either with rapeseed or Soybean showed a higher post vaccinal cellular immune response than that without ginseng or ISA 206 alone. Estimation of the humoral immune response of vaccinated calves revealed that antibody against FMD virus serotypes O pan Asia, A Iran O5 and SAT2 / EGY/2012 by SNT and ELISA assay induced by the inactivated FMD adjuvant with rapeseed oil and ginseng vaccine and the inactivated FMD adjuvant with soybean oil and ginseng vaccine were higher than those induced by inactivated FMD adjuvant with Montanide oils 206. In contrast, the obtained antibody levels by the inactivated FMD adjuvant with rapeseed oil vaccine and inactivated FMD adjuvant with soybean oil vaccine was lower than those induced by inactivated FMD adjuvant with Montanide oils 206. So, it could be concluded that the use of plant origin oil adjuvant as rapeseed and soybean oil is considered a beneficial and alternative adjuvant to the imported mineral oil as it is much cheaper and induce better post vaccinal immune responses especially when mixed with ginseng extract.

Abstract

This research paper describes the steps used to design an alternative metasurface which is based on Circular Complementary Split Ring (CCSR) formation at 5.8 GHz. All the 3D modelling was conducted using specialized EM simulation software that utilizes Eigen algorithm to solve different frequency modes that can resonate within the CCSR structure itself. The final design will be then fabricated using a precise laser CNC machine to achieve a better dimension as closely as possible to the simulation dimension. By using laser CNC, this step will able to overcome generic PCB design issue related to via’s placement, signal integrity, power integrity and multilayer designs. Completed CCSR metasurface will be able to mitigate or block unwanted EM mode from flowing to its neighbouring sensitive area which can affect the entire component performance due to unseen harmonics.

Abstract

Red palm olein (RPOL) is rich in nutritional and antioxidant compounds including carotenoids, tocopherols, and tocotrienols which makes it beneficial in food applications. However, to maintain the colloidal stability of RPOL in ice cream is challenging. Therefore, this study was carried out to formulate value-added ice creams supplemented with RPOL (0.1-5.0% w/w) in combination with guar gum (GG; 0.0-0.4% w/w) or xanthan gum (XG; 0.0-0.4% w/w) as stabilizers. Physical properties and sensory acceptance of these ice creams were determined in comparison with selected commercial ice cream samples (CM-ice creams). Ice cream with 0.1% RPOL and 0.4% guar gum resembled CM-ice creams in terms of viscosity (9.08±0.05 Pa.s.), hardness (3.59±3.12 kg), and amount of melted ice cream/30 min (62.00±2.83%). Meanwhile, ice cream with 0.1% RPOL and 0.4% xanthan gum was similar with CM-ice creams in their viscosity (9.19±0.04 Pa.s.) and hardness (0.60±0.25 kg), yet was relatively lower in the amount of melted ice cream/30 min (33.46±5.06%). All ice creams appeared red and yellow due to the presence of RPOL, and the colour intensity was enhanced with the presence of the stabilizers. The RPOL-based ice creams displayed lower score in sensory properties than those of CM-ice creams, thus highlighted the necessary attributes that need to be improved in future studies.

Abstract

A case is presented of a 65-year-old male who presented with an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction. An initial coronary angiogram demonstrated an ulcerated atherosclerotic plaque in the left main coronary artery. After 48 h of aggressive medical therapy including a 2b3a glycoprotein blocking agent, repeat angiography demonstrated resolution of the ulcerated plaque. The process of atherosclerotic plaque rupture is of dynamic nature.

29. The use of HbA1C in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 2 in high risk subjects

Abstract

We determined the specificity and sensitivity of HbA1c and its cut off level in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus among high risk subjects. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Family Medicine Clinic, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) from March 2005 till January 2006. All subjects, age more than 35 years old with one or more risk factors for diabetes together with capillary blood glucose ≥5.6 mmol/l were included in this study. They were instructed to fast overnight for 10-12 hours with 3 days on normal diet and physical activity. Venous blood for glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were done on appointment basis. Four hundreds and two asymptomatic high risk subjects were eligible in this study. HbA1c level was measured by using Cation-exchanged, high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) method via D10 HbA1c Program from BioRad with interassay coefficient of variations (CV) of 1.6- 1.9%. Of 402 patients, 32.6% (n=131) had type 2 diabetes mellitus based on OGTT. HbA1c of 6.4% gave an optimal sensitivity of 68% and specificity of 90% to predict either FPG of 7.0 mmol/L or 2HPP of 11.1 mmol/L. With HbA1c cut off level of 6.4%, the positive predictive value to detect diabetes was 76% and negative predictive value was 86%. The likelihood ratio that HbA1c > 6.4% to come from diabetes patient was 6.8 times. This study shows that HbA1c is a highly specific and convenient alternative to fasting plasma glucose and glucose tolerance test for the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus in high-risk group.
