In this paper, we study a class of orthogonal polynomials defined by a three-term recurrence relation with periodic coefficients. We derive explicit formulas for the generating function, the associated continued fraction, the orthogonality measure of these polynomials, as well as the spectral measure for the associated doubly infinite tridiagonal Jacobi matrix. Notably, while the orthogonality measure may include discrete mass points, the spectral measure(s) of the doubly infinite Jacobi matrix are absolutely continuous. Additionally, we uncover an intrinsic connection between these new orthogonal polynomials and Chebyshev polynomials through a nonlinear transformation of the polynomial variables., Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure

We use the Poisson kernel of the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials to introduces families of integral operators, which are semigroups of linear operators. We describe the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of one family of operators. The action of the semigroups of operators on the Askey--Wilson polynomials is shown to only change the parameters but preserves the degrees, hence we produce transmutation relation for the Askey--Wilson polynomials. The transmutation relations are then used to derive bilinear generating functions involving the Askey--Wilson polynomials.

We study the behavior of the smallest possible constants $d(a,b)$ and $d_n$ in Hardy's inequalities $$ \int_a^b\left(\frac{1}{x}\int_a^xf(t)dt\right)^2\,dx\leq d(a,b)\,\int_a^b [f(x)]^2 dx $$ and $$ \sum_{k=1}^{n}\Big(\frac{1}{k}\sum_{j=1}^{k}a_j\Big)^2\leq d_n\,\sum_{k=1}^{n}a_k^2. $$ The exact constant $d(a,b)$ and the precise rate of convergence of $d_n$ are established and the extremal function and the ``almost extremal'' sequence are found., Comment: 10 pages

We study two families of orthogonal polynomials. The first is a finite family related to the Askey-Wilson polynomials but the orthogonality is on the real line. A limiting case of this family is an infinite system of orthogonal polynomials whose moment problem is indeterminate. In this paper, we expand functions of specific $q$-exponential growth in terms of its even (odd) Askey- Wilson $q$-derivatives at $0$ and $\eta=(q^{1/4}+q^{-1/4})/2$. This expansion is a $q$-version of the celebrated Lidstone expansion theorem, where we expand the function in $q$-analogs of Lidstone polynomials, i.e., q-Bernoulli and $q$-Euler polynomials as in the classical case. We also raise and solve a $q$-extension of the problem of representing an entire function of the form $f(z)=g(z+1)-g(z)$, where $g(z)$ is also an entire function of the same order as $f(z)$.

We introduce three one-parameter semigroups of operators and determine their spectra. Two of them are fractional integrals associated with the Askey-Wilson operator. We also study these families as families of positive linear approximation operators. Applications include connection relations and bilinear formulas for the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM) is a technique for solving analytically and approximately the linear second-order differential equation, especially the eigenvalue problems that frequently appear in theoretical and mathematical physics. The analysis and mathematical justifications of the success and failure of the asymptotic iteration method are detailed in this work. A theorem explaining why the asymptotic iteration method works for the eigenvalue problem is presented. We introduce a finite difference and $q$-difference analogues of the Asymptotic Iteration Method of Ciftci, Hall, and Saad. We give necessary, and sufficient condition for the existence of a polynomial solution to a general linear second-order difference or $q$-difference equation subject to a "terminating condition", which is precisely defined. We study a continued fraction due to Ramanujan, that he recorded as Entry 12 in Chapter 16 of his second notebook. It is presented in Part III of Berndt's volumes on Ramanujan's notebooks. We give two alternate approaches to proving Ramanujan's Entry 12, one using a method of Euler, and another using the theory of orthogonal polynomials. We study orthogonal polynomials associated with a continued fraction due to Hirschhorn. Hirschhorn's continued fraction contains as special cases the famous Rogers--Ramanujan continued fraction and two of Ramanujan's generalizations. The orthogonality measure of the set of polynomials obtained has an absolutely continuous component. We find generating functions, asymptotic formulas, orthogonality relations, and the Stieltjes transform of the measure. Using standard generating function techniques, we show how to obtain formulas for the convergents of Ramanujan's continued fractions, including a formula that Ramanujan recorded himself as Entry 16 in Chapter 16 of his second notebook., Comment: 22 Pages. A general family of matrix valued Hermite type orthogonal polynomials is introduced and studied in detail by deriving Pearson equations for the weight and matrix valued differential equations for these matrix polynomials. This is used to derive Rodrigues formulas, explicit formulas for the squared norm and to give an explicit expression of the matrix entries as well to derive a connection formula for the matrix polynomials of Hermite type. We derive matrix valued analogues of Burchnall formulas in operational form as well explicit expansions for the matrix valued Hermite type orthogonal polynomials as well as for previously introduced matrix valued Gegenbauer type orthogonal polynomials. The Burchnall approach gives two descriptions of the matrix valued orthogonal polynomials for the Toda modification of the matrix weight for the Hermite setting. In this paper, we study asymptotics of the thermal partition function of a model of quantum mechanical fermions with matrix-like index structure and quartic interactions. This partition function is given explicitly by a Wronskian of the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials. Our asymptotic results involve the theta function and its derivatives. Burchnall's method to invert the Feldheim-Watson linearization formula for the Hermite polynomials is extended to all polynomial families in the Askey-scheme and its $q$-analogue. The resulting expansion formulas are made explicit for several families corresponding to measures with infinite support, including the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. An integrated version gives the possibility to give alternate expression for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified weight. This gives expansions for polynomials, such as Hermite, Laguerre, Meixner, Charlier, Meixner-Pollaczek and big $q$-Jacobi polynomials and big $q$-Laguerre polynomials. We show that one can find expansions for the orthogonal polynomials corresponding to the Toda-modification of the weight for the classical polynomials that correspond to known explicit solutions for the Toda lattice, i.e., for Hermite, Laguerre, Charlier, Meixner, Meixner-Pollaczek and Krawtchouk polynomials.

We consider a sequence of polynomials $\{P_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ satisfying a special $R_{II}$ type recurrence relation where the zeros of $P_n$ are simple and lie on the real line. It turns out that the polynomial $P_n$, for any $n \geq 2$, is the characteristic polynomial of a simple $n \times n$ generalized eigenvalue problem. It is shown that with this $R_{II}$ type recurrence relation one can always associate a positive measure on the unit circle. The orthogonality property satisfied by $P_n$ with respect to this measure is also obtained. Finally, examples are given to justify the results.

We give several expansion and identities involving the Ramanujan function $A_q$ and the Stieltjes--Wigert polynomials. Special values of our idenitities give $m$-versions of some of the items on the Slater list of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. By applying an integral representation for $q^{k^{2}}$ we systematically derive a large number of new Fourier and Mellin transform pairs and establish new integral representations for a variety of $q$-functions and polynomials that naturally arise from combinatorics, analysis, and orthogonal polynomials corresponding to indeterminate moment problems. These functions include $q$-Bessel functions, the Ramanujan function, Stieltjes--Wigert polynomials, $q$-Hermite and $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials, and the $q$-exponential functions $e_{q}$, $E_{q}$ and $\mathcal{E}_{q}$. Their representations are in turn used to derive many new identities involving $q$-functions and polynomials. We state and prove a number of unilateral and bilateral $q$-series identities and explore some of their consequences. We evaluate $q$-Bessel functions at an infinite sequence of points and introduce a generalization of the Ramanujan function and give an extension of the $m$-version of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We prove a generalization of the Kibble--Slepian formula (for Hermite polynomials) and its unitary analogue involving the $2$D Hermite polynomials recently proved in \cite{Ism4}. We derive integral representations for the $2$D Hermite polynomials which are of independent interest. The algebraic underpinning of the tridiagonalization procedure is investigated. The focus is put on the tridiagonalization of the hypergeometric operator and its associated quadratic Jacobi algebra. It is shown that under tridiagonalization, the quadratic Jacobi algebra becomes the quadratic Racah-Wilson algebra associated to the generic Racah/Wilson polynomials. We introduce a class of orthogonal polynomials in two variables which generalizes the disc polynomials and the 2-$D$ Hermite polynomials. We identify certain interesting members of this class including a one variable generalization of the 2-$D$ Hermite polynomials and a two variable extension of the Zernike or disc polynomials. We also give $q$-analogues of all these extensions. In each case in addition to generating functions and three term recursions we provide raising and lowering operators and show that the polynomials are eigenfunctions of second-order partial differential or $q$-difference operators.

We introduce two q-analogues of the 2D-Hermite polynomials which are functions of two complex variables. We derive explicit formulas, orthogonality relations, raising and lowering operator relations, generating functions, and Rodrigues formulas for both families. We also introduce a q-2D analogue of the disk polynomials (Zernike polynomials) and derive similar formulas for them as well including evaluating certain connection coefficients. We study a class of bivariate deformed Hermite polynomials and some of their properties using classical analytic techniques and the Wigner map. We also prove the positivity of certain determinants formed by the deformed polynomials. We identify the Atkin polynomials in terms of associated Jacobi polynomials. Our identificationthen takes advantage of the theory of orthogonal polynomials and their asymptotics to establish many new properties of the Atkin polynomials. We study the Plancherel--Rotach asymptotics of four families of orthogonal polynomials, the Chen--Ismail polynomials, the Berg-Letessier-Valent polynomials, the Conrad--Flajolet polynomials I and II. All these polynomials arise in indeterminate moment problems and three of them are birth and death process polynomials with cubic or quartic rates. We employ a difference equation asymptotic technique due to Z. Wang and R. Wong. The superintegrability, wavefunctions and overlap coefficients of the Dunkl oscillator model in the plane were considered in the first part. Here finite-dimensional representations of the symmetry algebra of the system, called the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra sd(2), are investigated. The algebra sd(2) has six generators, including two involutions and a central element, and can be seen as a deformation of the Lie algebra u(2). Two of the symmetry generators, J_3 and J_2, are respectively associated to the separation of variables in Cartesian and polar coordinates. Using the parabosonic creation/annihilation operators, two bases for the representations of sd(2), the Cartesian and circular bases, are constructed. In the Cartesian basis, the operator J_3 is diagonal and the operator J_2 acts in a tridiagonal fashion. In the circular basis, the operator J_2 is block upper-triangular with all blocks 2x2 and the operator J_3 acts in a tridiagonal fashion. The expansion coefficients between the two bases are given by the Krawtchouk polynomials. In the general case, the eigenvectors of J_2 in the circular basis are generated by the Heun polynomials and their components are expressed in terms of the para-Krawtchouk polynomials. In the fully isotropic case, the eigenvectors of J_2 are generated by little -1 Jacobi or ordinary Jacobi polynomials. The basis in which the operator J_2 is diagonal is then considered. In this basis, the defining relations of the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra imply that J_3 acts in a block tridiagonal fashion with all blocks 2x2. We prove some new results and unify the proofs of old ones involving complete monotonicity of expressions involving gamma and $q$-gamma functions, $0 < q < 1$. Each of these results implies the infinite divisibility of a related probability measure. In a few cases, we are able to get simple monotonicity without having complete monotonicity. All of the results lead to inequalities for these functions. Many of these were motivated by the bounds in a 1959 paper by Walter Gautschi. The isotropic Dunkl oscillator model in the plane is investigated. The model is defined by a Hamiltonian constructed from the combination of two independent parabosonic oscillators. The system is superintegrable and its symmetry generators are obtained by the Schwinger construction using parabosonic creation/annihilation operators. The algebra generated by the constants of motion, which we term the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra, is an extension of the Lie algebra u(2) with involutions. The system admits separation of variables in both Cartesian and polar coordinates. The separated wavefunctions are respectively expressed in terms of generalized Hermite polynomials and products of Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials. Moreover, the so-called Jacobi-Dunkl polynomials appear as eigenfunctions of the symmetry operator responsible for the separation of variables in polar coordinates. The expansion coefficients between the Cartesian and polar bases (overlap coefficients) are given as linear combinations of dual -1 Hahn polynomials. The Askey-Wilson polynomials are orthogonal polynomials in $x = \cos \theta$, which are given as a terminating $_4\phi_3$ basic hypergeometric series. The non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are Laurent polynomials in $z=e^{i\theta}$, which are given as a sum of two terminating $_4\phi_3$'s. They satisfy a biorthogonality relation. In this paper new orthogonality relations for single $_4\phi_3$'s which are Laurent polynomials in $z$ are given, which imply the non-symmetric Askey-Wilson biorthogonality. These results include discrete orthogonality relations. They can be considered as a classical analytic study of the results for non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials which were previously obtained by affine Hecke algebra techniques.

The relation between the spectral decomposition of a self-adjoint operator which is realizable as a higher order recurrence operator and matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials is investigated. A general construction of such operators from scalar-valued orthogonal polynomials is presented. Two examples of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials with explicit orthogonality relations and three-term recurrence relation are presented, which both can be considered as $2\times 2$-matrix-valued analogues of subfamilies of Askey-Wilson polynomials., Comment: 15 pages

We establish the Plancherel-Rotach-type asymptotics around the largest zero (the soft edge asymptotics) for some classes of polynomials satisfying three-term recurrence relations with exponentially increasing coefficients. As special cases, our results include this type of asymptotics for q^{-1}-Hermite polynomials of Askey, Ismail and Masson, q-Laguerre polynomials, and the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials. The $J$-matrix method is extended to difference and $q$-difference operators and is applied to several explicit differential, difference, $q$-difference and second order Askey-Wilson type operators. The spectrum and the spectral measures are discussed in each case and the corresponding eigenfunction expansion is written down explicitly in most cases. In some cases we encounter new orthogonal polynomials with explicit three term recurrence relations where nothing is known about their explicit representations or orthogonality measures. Each model we analyze is a discrete quantum mechanical model in the sense of Odake and Sasaki [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44 (2011), 353001, 47 pages].

We propose a new approach to the combinatorial interpretations of linearization coefficient problem of orthogonal polynomials. We first establish a difference system and then solve it combinatorially and analytically using the method of separation of variables. We illustrate our approach by applying it to determine the number of perfect matchings, derangements, and other weighted permutation problems. The separation of variables technique naturally leads to integral representations of combinatorial numbers where the integrand contains a product of one or more types of orthogonal polynomials. We explore in this paper some orthogonal polynomials which are naturally associated to certain families of coherent states, often referred to as nonlinear coherent states in the quantum optics literature. Some examples turn out to be known orthogonal polynomials but in many cases we encounter a general class of new orthogonal polynomials for which we establish several qualitative results., Comment: 21 pages

Some sharp two-sided Tur\'an type inequalities for parabolic cylinder functions and Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions are deduced. The proofs are based on integral representations for quotients of parabolic cylinder functions and Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions, which arise in the study of the infinite divisibility of the Fisher-Snedecor F distribution. Moroever, some complete monotonicity results are given concerning Tur\'an determinants of Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions. A general scheme for tridiagonalising differential, difference or q-difference operators using orthogonal polynomials is described. From the tridiagonal form the spectral decomposition can be described in terms of the orthogonality measure of generally different orthogonal polynomials. Three examples are worked out: (1) related to Jacobi and Wilson polynomials for a second order differential operator, (2) related to little q-Jacobi polynomials and Askey-Wilson polynomials for a bounded second order q-difference operator, (3) related to little q-Jacobi polynomials for an unbounded second order q-difference operator. The "Diophantine" property of the zeros of certain polynomials in the Askey scheme, recently discovered by Calogero and his collaborators, is explained, with suitably chosen parameter values, in terms of the summation theorem of hypergeometric series. Here the Diophantine property refers to integer valued zeros. It turns out that the same procedure can also be applied to polynomials arising from the basic hypergeometric series. We found, with suitably chosen parameters and certain $q-$analogue of the summation theorems, zeros of these polynomials explicitly, which are no longer integer valued. Given an operator L acting on a function space, the J-matrix method consists of finding a sequence y_n of functions such that the operator L acts tridiagonally on y_n with respect to n. Once such a tridiagonalization is obtained, a number of characteristics of such an operator L can be obtained. In particular, information on eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, bound states, spectral decompositions, etc. can be obtained in this way. We show connections between a special type of addition formulas and a theorem of Stieltjes and Rogers. We use different techniques to derive the desirable addition formulas. We apply our approach to derive special addition theorems for Bessel functions and confluent hypergeometric functions. We also derive several additions theorems for basic hypergeometric functions.
