ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Los tumores estrornales gastrointestinales (GastroIntestinal Stromal Tuniors - GISTs—) constituyen la categoría más amplia de neoplasias no epiteliales primarias del tracto gastrointestinal y representan aproximadamente el 1-2% de todas las neoplasias del tubo digestivo. Ocurren más frecuentemente en estómago y en intestino delgado, pero también pueden estar presentes en otros sitios del tracto gastrointestinal tubular, incluyendo esófago, colon, recto y ano. Además, han sido encontrados en sitios tales como retroperi tonco. útero, omento, mesocolon y tejidos blandos. Originalmente reconocidos en 1960 por Martin como una entidad clínicopatológica y un tipo distintivo de neoplasia estromal gástrica, los GISTs fueron posteriormente publicados por Stout. quien introdujo el término leiomioblastoma. Debido a la dificultad en predecir con seguridad el comportamiento biológico de estos tumores, el término «tumor de músculo liso de potencial maligno incierto» fue introducido para los tumores borderline. En 1983. Mazur y Clark acuñaron el término "tumor estromal gastrointestinal" y sugirieron que estas lesiones podían originarse del sistema nervioso mientérico. Algunos estudios reportaron evidencias de una diferenciación neural en algunos GISTs y fué introducido el término «tumor autonómico gastrointestinal (GANT). En 1998, Kindbiom y col., establecieron un nuevo candidato en la línea de diferenciación de los GISTs y sugirieron que estas neoplasias muestran una diferenciación inmunofenotípica hacia células intersticiales (le Cajal (células marcapasos del tracto gastrointestinal). Inmunohistoquímicamente los GISTs revelan frecuentemente inmunoreactividad para virnentina (VIM), CD34 y c-kit (CD1 17). El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un análisis de la evolución histórica y conceptual de los GISTs.

Foi criado um canal independente de informações acerca do tratamento do câncer com radioterapia: o site “www.iradioterapia.com”, que disponibiliza informações na Internet, tendo como base dados científicos e linhas de condutas diversas. Sempre de modo ético, profissionais da saúde, estudantes, pacientes e familiares, entre outros, podem obter informações teóricas a respeito de condutas, opções terapêuticas e atualizações em relação aos tratamentos disponíveis em nível mundial, além de tira-dúvidas on-line. Podem também participar de grupos de debates entre os próprios interessados. Na rede desde agosto/2000, já foram registrados 4000 acessos, com dezenas de dúvidas de pacientes respondidas e fóruns realizados. As principais questões levantadas são a respeito de condutas médicas, cuidados com o paciente e prognóstico da doença. Nota-se ausência de informações dirigidas à pacientes e familiares acerca do tratamento radioterápico. O acesso democrático e livre de informações ligadas à saúde e medicina possibilita a melhoria das técnicas de tratamento, da relação médico-paciente e tranqüilização do paciente durante o tratamento. O sistema de acesso a informações via Internet permitiu melhor participação dos pacientes e seus familiares no seu tratamento, propiciando maior conforto e tranqüilidade. In transplantation, donor dendritic cells (do-DCs) initiate the alloimmune response either by direct interaction with host T cells or by transferring intact donor MHC to host DCs. However, how do-DCs can be targeted for improving allograft survival is still unclear. Here we show CD103+ DCs are the major do-DC subset involved in the acute rejection of murine skin transplants. In the absence of CD103+ do-DCs, less donor MHC-II is carried to host lymph nodes, fewer allogenic T cells are primed and allograft survival is prolonged. Incubation of skin grafts with the anti-inflammatory mycobacterial protein DnaK reduces donor MHC-II on CD103+DCs and prolongs graft survival. This effect is mediated through IL-10-induced March1, which ubiquitinates and decreases MHC-II levels. Importantly, in vitro pre-treatment of human DCs with DnaK reduces their ability to prime alloreactive T cells. Our findings demonstrate a novel therapeutic approach to dampen alloimmunity by targeting donor MHC-II on CD103+DCs.

Abstract Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) with mutated SF3B1 gene present features including a favourable outcome distinct from MDS with mutations in other splicing factor genes SRSF2 or U2AF1. Molecular bases of these divergences are poorly understood. Here we find that SF3B1-mutated MDS show reduced R-loop formation predominating in gene bodies associated with intron retention reduction, not found in U2AF1- or SRSF2-mutated MDS. Compared to erythroblasts from SRSF2- or U2AF1-mutated patients, SF3B1-mutated erythroblasts exhibit augmented DNA synthesis, accelerated replication forks, and single-stranded DNA exposure upon differentiation. Importantly, histone deacetylase inhibition using vorinostat restores R-loop formation, slows down DNA replication forks and improves SF3B1-mutated erythroblast differentiation. In conclusion, loss of R-loops with associated DNA replication stress represents a hallmark of SF3B1-mutated MDS ineffective erythropoiesis, which could be used as a therapeutic target.

BackgroundsAlthough allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a potentially curative therapy for hematological malignancies, it can be associated with relevant post-transplant complications. Several reports have shown that polymorphisms in immune system genes are correlated with the development of post-transplant complications. Within this context, this work focuses on identifying novel polymorphisms in cytokine genes and developing predictive models to anticipate the risk of developing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), transplantation-related mortality (TRM), relapse and overall survival (OS).MethodsOur group developed a 132-cytokine gene panel which was tested in 90 patients who underwent an HLA-identical sibling-donor allo-HSCT. Bayesian logistic regression (BLR) models were used to select the most relevant variables. Based on the cut-off points selected for each model, patients were classified as being at high or low-risk for each of the post-transplant complications (aGVHD II-IV, aGVHD III-IV, cGVHD, mod-sev cGVHD, TRM, relapse and OS).ResultsA total of 737 polymorphisms were selected from the custom panel genes. Of these, 41 polymorphisms were included in the predictive models in 30 cytokine genes were selected (17 interleukins and 13 chemokines). In the emerging field of mechanical metamaterials, using periodic lattice structures as a primary ingredient is relatively frequent. However, the choice of aperiodic lattices in these structures presents unique advantages regarding failure, e.g., buckling or fracture, because avoiding repeated patterns prevents global failures, with local failures occurring in turn that can beneficially delay structural collapse. Therefore, it is expedient to develop models for computing efficiently the effective mechanical properties in lattices from different general features while addressing the challenge of presenting topologies (or graphs) of different sizes. In this paper, we develop a deep learning model to predict energetically-equivalent mechanical properties of linear elastic lattices effectively. Considering the lattice as a graph and defining material and geometrical features on such, we show that Graph Neural Networks provide more accurate predictions than a dense, fully connected strategy, thanks to the geometrically induced bias through graph representation, closer to the underlying equilibrium laws from mechanics solved in the direct problem. Leveraging the efficient forward-evaluation of a vast number of lattices using this surrogate enables the inverse problem, i.e., to obtain a structure having prescribed specific behavior, which is ultimately suitable for multiscale structural optimization problems.

Capacitance reduction in single-phase rectifiers has been the focus of several works, allowing, in many cases, the replacement of short-lifetime electrolytic with film capacitors, prolonging the lifespan of the converter. Among the different techniques used to promote this capacitance reduction, the use of modulation and control strategy has the advantage of not adding extra elements to the circuit. Thus, this work proposes the application of a hybrid modulation in a converter derived from integrating an interleaved boost rectifier and a full-bridge Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) DC-DC converter to reduce the output low-frequency ripple actively. Besides the active low-frequency voltage ripple reduction allowing employ only film capacitors, the proposed solution presents low DC bus voltage, reducing the voltage stress, low input current ripple, simple control strategy, and fast dynamic response. Experimental results of a prototype with a rated power of 300 W are presented to validate of the proposed solution, operating with an efficiency of 92.4%, a power factor of 0.9936, and a total harmonic distortion (THD) of 10%. The adopted hybrid modulation and control strategies allow for reducing the voltage output ripple with a capacitance/watts ratio of $0.18~\mu $ F/W, a 33 times capacitance reduction, avoiding electrolytic capacitors, and maintaining a fast dynamic response of output voltage.

This research study explores the representation of men in fashion advertising and investigates whether societal and fashion evolution has contributed to a departure from traditional stereotypes. The research methodology comprised three phases: content analysis, surveys, and in-depth interviews with an expert panel, examining how men’s clothing has been communicated in fashion over a span of 50 years, with a focus on three renowned brands: Lacoste, Burberry, and Hugo Boss. The findings reveal a notable shift in fashion advertising targeting men, characterized by increased racial diversity among models and a more diverse depiction of attitudes and poses. However, homosexual or bisexual couples remain largely unrepresented. The study highlights the influence of advertising on shaping the image of the “new man”, evident through the diminishing gender boundaries in clothing and accessories and the persistent struggle to break free from stereotypes. The study underscores the significance of ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in fashion advertising.

Abstract Neural networks are powerful tools for solving complex problems, but finding the right network topology for a given task remains an open question. Biology uses neurogenesis and structural plasticity to solve this problem. Advanced neural network algorithms are mostly relying on synaptic plasticity and learning. The main limitation in reconciling these two approaches is the lack of a viable hardware solution that could reproduce the bottom-up development of biological neural networks. Here, we show how the dendritic growth of PEDOT:PSS-based fibers through AC electropolymerization can implement structural plasticity during network development. We find that this strategy follows Hebbian principles and is able to define topologies that leverage better computing performances with sparse synaptic connectivity for solving non-trivial tasks. This approach is validated in software simulation, and offers up to 61% better network sparsity on classification and 50% in signal reconstruction tasks.

We discuss the design and implementation details of two conforming virtual element methods for the numerical approximation of two partial differential equations that emerge in phase-field modeling of fracture propagation in elastic material. The two partial differential equations are: (i) a linear hyperbolic equation describing the momentum balance and (ii) a fourth-order elliptic equation modeling the damage of the material. Inspired by [1,2,3], we develop a new conforming VEM for the discretization of the two equations, which is implementation-friendly, i.e., different terms can be implemented by exploiting a single projection operator. We use $ C^0 $ and $ C^1 $ virtual elements for the second-and fourth-order partial differential equation, respectively. For both equations, we review the formulation of the virtual element approximation and discuss the details pertaining the implementation.

Abstract Smoking negatively affects B cell function and immunoglobulin levels, but it is unclear if this immune dysfunction contributes to the risk of severe COVID-19 in smokers. We evaluated binding IgM, IgA and IgG antibodies to spike and receptor binding domain antigens, and used a pseudovirus assay to quantify neutralization titers in a set of 27 patients with severe COVID-19. We found no significant differences between binding and neutralization antibody responses for people with a smoking history and people who never smoked. High plasma viral load, but not antibody titers, was linked to an increased risk of death. Humoral immune dysfunction was not a major driver of severe COVID-19 in smokers.

Psychiatry is a multifaceted field that requires the integration of various disciplines and the experiential knowledge of individuals with lived experience. However, ethnography implies a subjective, emotional and relational commitment that must be the subject of reflexive analysis. The anthropologist’s social position plays a crucial role in data production and should be objectively analyzed.

IntroductionHerpesvirus infections have been highlighted as emerging diseases affecting wildlife health and the conservation of several taxa. Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) and infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) are two viruses that infect wild ruminants. Nevertheless, epidemiological data on herpesviruses in South American wild ruminants are limited. An outbreak of caprine gammaherpesvirus-2 (CpHV-2) that recently was suspected as the cause of MCF in southern pudus (Pudu puda) prompted the need to conduct molecular screenings in Chilean cervids to understand the epidemiology of herpesviruses. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence and genetic diversity of herpesviruses in free-ranging cervids from Chile.MethodsHerpesvirus infection was assessed in antemortem blood samples (n = 86) from pudus (n = 81) and huemuls (Hippocamelus bisulcus) (n = 5), as well as postmortem samples of spleen (n = 24) and lung (n = 3) from pudus, using a nested pan-herpesvirus PCR assay.ResultsCombining all suitable sample types, DNA of pudu gammaherpesvirus-1 was detected in five pudues and five huemuls, with an overall prevalence of 9.90% (n = 10/101; 95% CI = 5.11–17.87%). One pudu tested positive for ovine gammaherpesvirus-2 (n = 1/96; 1.04%; 95% CI = 0.05–6.49%), and one pudu tested positive for a Macavirus sequence with 98.63 similarity to ovine gammaherpesvirus-2 (n = 96; 1.04%; 95% CI = 0.05–6.49%).DiscussionTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a herpesvirus in huemul and of ovine gammaherpesvirus-2 in Chile. Our results also confirm the active circulation of herpesvirus in free-ranging cervids in Chilean Patagonia, and as such, MCF should be considered as a possible cause of disease in free-ranging Chilean pudus and livestock species. Further research is necessary to develop a plan of systematic monitoring (serological and pathological screening) of herpesviruses in Chilean wild and domestic ruminants to understand their diversity and impact on animal health and conservation.

ObjectiveThe specific effect of Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (Ad-MSC) on acute joint inflammation, where the response mostly depends on innate immunity activation, remains elusive. The pathogenesis of gouty arthritis, characterized by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in the joints, associated to acute flares, has been associated to NLRP3 inflammasome activation and subsequent amplification of the inflammatory response. Our aim was to study the effect of human Ad-MSC administration in the clinical inflammatory response of rabbits after MSU injection, and the molecular mechanisms involved.MethodsAd-MSC were administered by intraarterial route shortly after intraarticular MSU crystal injections. Joint and systemic inflammation was sequentially studied, and the mechanisms involved in NLRP3 inflammasome activation, and the synthesis of inflammatory mediators were assessed in the synovial membranes 72h after insult. Ad-MSC and THP-1-derived macrophages stimulated with MSU were co-cultured in transwell system.ResultsA single systemic dose of Ad-MSC accelerated the resolution of local and systemic inflammatory response. In the synovial membrane, Ad-MSC promoted alternatively M2 macrophage presence, inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome and inducing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-10 or TGF-β, and decreasing nuclear factor-κB activity. Ad-MSC induced a net anti-inflammatory balance in MSU-stimulated THP-1 cells, with a higher increase in IL-10 and IDO expression than that observed for IL-1β and TNF.ConclusionOur in vivo and in vitro results showed that a single systemic dose of Ad-MSC decrease the intensity and duration of the inflammatory response by an early local COX-2 upregulation and PGE2 release. Ad-MSCs suppressed NF-kB activity, NLRP3 inflammasome, and promoted the presence of M2 alternative macrophages in the synovium. Therefore, this therapeutic approach could be considered as a pharmacological alternative in patients with comorbidities that preclude conventional treatment.

In this work, the adhesion behavior of chemically treated banana and coir Colombian fibers embedded in polylactic acid (PLA) and unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) matrices was investigated. Both types of fibers were treated with a 5 wt.% sodium hydroxide solution for one hour. The properties of treated and untreated fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile tests. To evaluate the adhesion behavior of the fibers in PLA and UPR matrices, pull-out tests were performed, and the percentage of broken fibers was determined. The results showed that alkaline treatment improved the fibers’ physicochemical, mechanical, and thermal properties. In addition, the alkaline treatment was able to improve the adhesion behavior of coir and banana fibers to PLA and UPR matrices. The banana fibers showed a percentage of broken fibers of 100%, while the coir fibers showed a slight increase in IFSS value. This behavior is attributed to the improvement in surface roughness due to the removal of non-cellulosic composites and impurities.

The serine-threonine kinase Akt plays a fundamental role in cell survival, metabolism, proliferation, and migration. To keep these essential processes under control, Akt activity and stability must be tightly regulated; otherwise, life-threatening conditions might prevail. Although it is well understood that phosphorylation regulates Akt activity, much remains to be known about how its stability is maintained. Here, we characterize BAG5, a chaperone regulator, as a novel Akt-interactor and substrate that attenuates Akt stability together with Hsp70. BAG5 switches monoubiquitination to polyubiquitination of Akt and increases its degradation caused by Hsp90 inhibition and Hsp70 overexpression. Akt interacts with BAG5 at the linker region that joins the first and second BAG domains and phosphorylates the first BAG domain. The Akt-BAG5 complex is formed in serum-starved conditions and dissociates in response to HGF, coincident with BAG5 phosphorylation. BAG5 knockdown attenuated Akt degradation and facilitated its activation, whereas the opposite effect was caused by BAG5 overexpression. Altogether, our results indicate that Akt stability and signaling are dynamically regulated by BAG5, depending on growth factor availability.

Abstract Mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit continue to place millions of people at risk of infection around the world. Novel methods of vector control are being developed to provide public health officials with the necessary tools to prevent disease transmission and reduce local mosquito populations. However, these methods will require public acceptance for a sustainable approach and evaluations at local settings. We present our efforts in community engagement carried out in colonias of the Lower Rio Grande Valley in south Texas for mosquito surveillance, control, and ecological projects. Along the US-Mexico border the term colonia refers to impoverished communities that are usually inhabited by families of Hispanic heritage. The different engagements were carried out from September 2016 to February 2019; during this time, we had three distinct phases for community engagement. In Phase 1 we show the initial approach to the colonias in which we assessed security and willingness to participate; in Phase 2 we carried out the first recruitment procedure involving community meetings and house-to-house recruitment; and in Phase 3 we conducted a modified recruitment procedure based on community members’ input. Our findings show that incorporating community members in the development of communication materials and following their suggestions for engagement allowed us to generate culturally sensitive recruitment materials and to better understand the social relationships and power dynamics within these communities. We were able to effectively reach a larger portion of the community and decrease the dropout rate of participants. Progress gained with building trust in the communities allowed us to convey participant risks and benefits of collaborating with our research projects. Community engagement should be viewed as a key component of any local vector control program as well as for any scientific research project related to vector control. Even in the face of budgetary constraints, small efforts in community engagement go a long way.

Bovine mastitis is the most frequent and costly disease that affects dairy cattle. Non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) are currently one of the main pathogens associated with difficult-to-treat intramammary infections. Biofilm is an important virulence factor that can protect bacteria against antimicrobial treatment and prevent their recognition by the host’s immune system. Previously, we found that chronic mastitis isolates which were refractory to antibiotic therapy developed strong biofilm biomass. Now, we evaluated the influence of biofilm biomass intensity on the antibiotic resistance pattern in strong and weak biofilm-forming NAS isolates from clinical mastitis. We also assessed the effect of cloxacillin (Clx) and chitosan (Ch), either alone or in combination, on NAS isolates with different lifestyles and abilities to form biofilm. The antibiotic resistance pattern was not the same in strong and weak biofilm producers, and there was a significant association (p ≤ 0.01) between biofilm biomass intensity and antibiotic resistance. Bacterial viability assays showed that a similar antibiotic concentration was effective at killing both groups when they grew planktonically. In contrast, within biofilm the concentrations needed to eliminate strong producers were 16 to 128 times those needed for weak producers, and more than 1,000 times those required for planktonic cultures. Moreover, Ch alone or combined with Clx had significant antimicrobial activity, and represented an improvement over the activity of the antibiotic on its own, independently of the bacterial lifestyle, the biofilm biomass intensity or the antibiotic resistance pattern. In conclusion, the degree of protection conferred by biofilm against antibiotics appears to be associated with the intensity of its biomass, but treatment with Ch might be able to help counteract it. These findings suggest that bacterial biomass should be considered when designing new antimicrobial therapies aimed at reducing antibiotic concentrations while improving cure rates.

Summary: Timor-Leste is a small nation of 1.3 million people which shares a land border with Indonesia and is 550 km from Darwin, Australia. It is one of the poorest nations in Asia. The National Health Laboratory (NHL) and its network of smaller laboratories in Timor-Leste had limited capacity to perform molecular diagnostic testing before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic began.With the support of international development partners, the NHL rapidly expanded its molecular testing service. From March 2020 to February 2022, over 200,000 molecular tests were performed; COVID-19 testing sites were established in hospital and community health center laboratories and all 13 municipalities, and the number of scientists and technicians at the molecular diagnostic laboratory at the NHL increased from five to 28 between 2019 and 2022.Molecular diagnostic testing for COVID-19 was successfully established at the NHL and in the municipalities. The molecular diagnostic laboratory at NHL is now equipped to respond to not only large-scale COVID-19 testing but also laboratory detection of other infectious diseases, preparing Timor-Leste for future outbreaks or pandemics.

Strong, enduring partnerships exist between the Northern Territory and Timor-Leste, and in recent years collaborations have led to significant developments in health system capacity in Timor-Leste. Laboratory strengthening has been a key focus; improved diagnostic microbiology capability, especially in the National Health Laboratory, is having an impact on individual patient management and outcomes, epidemiological surveillance, and public health responses to communicable disease challenges including antimicrobial resistance.

Color QR Codes are often generated to encode digital information, but one also could use colors or to allocate colors in a QR Code to act as a color calibration chart. In this dataset, we present several thousand QR Codes images generated with two different colorization algorithms (random and back-compatible) and several tuning variables in these color encoding. The QR Codes were also exposed to three different channel conditions (empty, augmentation and real-life). Also, we derive the SNR and BER computations for these QR Code in comparison with their black and white versions. Finally, we also show if ZBar, a commercial QR Code scanner, is able to read them.

IntroductionThe association of polymorphisms in molecules involved in the immune response (checkpoint inhibitors) with the clinical outcome after allogeneic transplantation (alloHSCT) has been described. Lymphocyte Activation 3 (LAG3) is a surface protein that plays a regulatory role in immunity as an inhibitory immune checkpoint molecule.MethodsTo determine its role in the alloHSCT setting, we analyzed 797 patients transplanted from HLA-identical sibling donors. The LAG3 rs870849 C>T polymorphism was genotyped in donors.ResultsWe detected a higher incidence of severe acute GVHD in patients transplanted from donors with TT genotype (p: 0.047, HR 1.64; 95% CI 1.01 – 2.67). Overall survival (OS) was worse for patients transplanted from donors with the rs870849 CT/TT genotype (0.020; HR, 1.44; 95% CI 1.06 – 1.96), as well as disease-free survival (DFS) (p: 0.002; HR 1.58, 95%CI: 1.18 – 2.14) and transplant-related mortality (TRM) (p< 0.001; HR: 1.88, 95% CI 1.29 – 2.74). When combining the LAG3 rs870849 and the PDCD1 rs36084323 genotypes of the donor, three genetic groups were well defined, allowing a good stratification of the risk of acute GVHD, TRM, OS and DFS.DiscussionWe conclude that the LAG3 genotype of the donor may be considered in donors’ selection. As this selection may be limited in the HLA-identical sibling donor scenario, further studies exploring the impact of LAG3 genotype of the donor in unrelated transplantation are warranted.

Introduction: The management of abdominal penetrating trauma remains complex. Between the risk of negative laparotomy and missed visceral injury, laparoscopy is a good alternative. We report 2 cases of abdominal penetrating trauma with colonic injury diagnosed and treated with laparoscopic approach. Observations: The first patient was 15 years old, with no medical history and received at 3 h of a penetrating trauma by stabbing. Hemodynamic status was normal. An exploratory laparoscopy was performed. It objectified a penetration of the peritoneum on the left flank with an injury of the anti-mesenteric edge of the descending colon that was sutured. The second patient was 20 years old, with no history, who had a penetrating trauma of the left iliac fossa by stabbing. Arterial pressure was normal. He was received 6 h after the trauma. An exploratory laparoscopy objectified an injury of 2 cm located at the sigmoid colon which was sutured with a good evolution. Conclusion: Laparoscopy in abdominal wounds is a good option in selected patients. It has a diagnostic and therapeutic importance in colonic injuries. The limits are represented by the possibility of unrecognized visceral lesions that can lead to additional morbidity.

Abstract Background The incorporation of genetic variables into risk scores for predicting venous thromboembolic events (VTE) could improve their capacity to identify those patients for whom thromboprophylaxis would be most beneficial. Proof‐of‐concept of this is provided by the TiC‐ONCO score for predicting the risk of VTE in patients with solid tumours. Our aim was to develop a similarly improved tool—the TiC‐LYMPHO score—for predicting VTE in patients with lymphoma. Methods In a retrospective observational study of 208 patients with lymphoma, 31 (14.9%) were found to have experienced an episode of VTE either at the time of diagnosis or over the next 6 months. Clinical variables associated with VTE, determined via logistic regression analysis, plus the same genetic variables included in the TiC‐ONCO score, were used to build the TiC‐LYMPHO score algorithm. The sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and AUC of the TiC‐LYMPHO, the Khorana and ThroLy scores were compared in the same population. Results The TiC‐LYMPHO score showed a significantly higher AUC, sensitivity and NPV (0.783, 95.35% and 97.98% respectively) than the other scores. Abstract Background Latin American clinical simulation has had an important development; there are no studies that characterize simulation centers and programs in the entire region. The aims of this work are to characterize the current state of simulation-based education in the health sciences, to determine the structure of Latin American simulation centers in terms of teaching, research, and continuing medical education (CME), as well as to determine the perception of quality based on international standards of simulation practices for the directors of Latin American centers. Methods A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study with a demographic questionnaire and a Likert-type survey was conducted to the directors of the simulation centers found in Latin America. Results Four hundred eight simulation centers were documented, the survey was answered by 240 directors, and the data from 149 were complete responses on the 42 quality self-perception scale and considered valid on further analyses related to the quality of the programs. Most of the centers that responded correspond to Chile, Brazil, and Mexico (37.5%, 18.1%, 12.7%). 84% of the centers are university-based, and 71% of the centers are medium-sized, with less than 10 instructors (54%). The directors are mostly women (61.7%), medical doctors (50%), and nurses (40%), with clinical specialization (37%), master’s degree (53%), and doctorate (13%). 75% have completed a simulation instructor course, and 6% have developed a fellowship. Most consider the maintenance of international quality standards to be relevant in their centers, mainly in reflective training techniques, ethical aspects, and adequate learning environments. Conclusions Simulation-based education in health sciences has had an increasing development in Latin America, within a university environment, in an important academic specialization process that seeks to adhere to high-quality standards to improve training and development of clinical skills, human factors, and critical thinking. We recommend starting accreditation processes in Latin America and studies that measure the quality of simulation-based education in our region, based on objective observations more than in self-reporting.
