Mature teratoma is a common tumor that can undergo malignant transformation, either in ovarian or extragonadal sites. While adenocarcinoma superimposed on sacrococcygeal teratoma is rare, mucinous variants have been reported in only five cases. Here, we present a case of a young girl with disseminated metastasis of mucinous carcinoma, initially of unknown primary origin. Further investigation by a dedicated multidisciplinary team (MDT) revealed a focus of mucinous carcinoma (intestinal type) in a sacrococcygeal teratoma incompletely resected five years earlier. The patient is currently undergoing second-line chemotherapy after experiencing side-effects on the first-line regimen. Pathologists, gynecologic oncologists, and surgical oncologists should exercise caution when dealing with locally aggressive teratomas, thoroughly searching for malignant components and conducting short-term follow-up.

Background: Ovarian cancer is the most prevalent gynecologic malignancy in Egypt. Although metastasis from ovarian cancer is common, there are still sites with rarely reported deposits as non-regional nodes, bone, and brain. Method: We retrospectively recruited a group of patients over a 7-year period from the data system of a cancer center. All the recruited patients suffered from a rare distant metastasis from ovarian cancer. We used statistical software (SPSS) for the analysis of the study results. Continuous variables were presented as mean and standard deviation, if normally distributed, or median and range when non-normally distributed. Independent samples t-test was utilized to compare parametric data, whereas nonparametric data were compared through the use of the Mann-Whitney U test. Categorical data were compared with Pearson's Chi-square test or Fischer-Exact test when appropriate. A P-value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: Nearly half of the patients already had metastasis at the time of the initial presentation, while the rest developed it during the disease course. Debulking was feasible in nearly half of the patients with long overall and progression-free survival. Tumors with non-regional nodal metastases seemed to have excellent survival. Conclusion: We could recommend offering these patients optimal debulking and considering those with a non-regional nodal spread as having a curable disease.

Colon cancer is one of the commonest tumours in the world. Although most colon cancer patients are colonized by adenocarcinoma, some other pathologies such as adenosquamous carcinoma are rarely encountered. We present two patients with right colon adenosquamous carcinoma. Both patients were males and both suffered a nodepositive disease. Furthermore, one of them developed recurrence 7 months after initial radical surgery, despite formal colon adjuvant chemotherapy given. In conclusion, the patients with adenosquamous colon cancer are a subgroup with a worse prognosis, and questionable response to the conventional chemotherapeutic regimens as FOLFOX (flourouracil, leucoverin, and oxaloplatin) and CAPEOX (capecitabine and oxaloplatin).

Background: Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a very rare diffuse lung disease characterized by the accumulation of amorphous and periodic acid Schiff-positive lipoproteinaceous material in the alveolar spaces due to impaired surfactant clearance by alveolar macrophages. Three main types were identified: Autoimmune, secondary and congenital. PAP has been previously reported to be associated with several systemic auto-immune diseases. Accordingly, we present the first case report of PAP associated with myasthenia gravis. Case: A 27-year-old female patient, ex-smoker, developed a dyspnea on exertion in 2020. The chest X-ray detected diffuse symmetric alveolar opacities. Pulmonary infection was ruled out, particularly Coronavirus disease 2019. The chest scan revealed the “crazy paving” pattern. The bronchoalveolar lavage showed a rosy liquid with granular acellular eosinophilic material Periodic acid-Schiff positive. According to the lung biopsy results, she was diagnosed with PAP. The granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor autoantibodies were negative. Nine months later, she was diagnosed with bulbar seronegative myasthenia gravis, confirmed with the electroneuromyography with repetitive nerve stimulation showing significant amplitude decrement of the trapezius and spinal muscles. She was treated with pyridostigmine, oral corticosteroids and azathioprine. Given the worsening respiratory condition of the patient, a bilateral whole lung lavage was performed with a partial resolution of symptoms. Thus, this previously unreported association was treated successfully with rituximab, including improvement of dyspnea, diplopia and muscle fatigability at six months of follow-up. Conclusions: This case emphasizes on the possible association of auto-immune disease to PAP, which could worsen the disease course, as the specific treatment does not exist yet. Hence, further studies are needed to establish clear-cut guidelines for PAP management, particularly when associated to auto-immune diseases.

In terms of sustainability & wearing comfort, denim manufacturers are entering a new era of product variety. Tencel's regenerative nature and unique mechanical qualities usher in a new era for the denim industry. In this work, denim fabrics were manufactured using Tencel Cotton blended yarn using very fi ne yarn (20 Tex or 30 Ne), and fabric performance was examined following factors like tensile strength and other relevant metrics. For better evaluation, All the structures were 2/1 RHT (right-hand twill) that contained 115 EPI & 70 PPI and also indigo blue dyed. According to the result of the investigation, 100% Tencel Fabric (both the warp and the weft yarn were 100% Tencel) demonstrated the highest quality of fabric performance in terms of tensile strength, tearing strength, stiff ness, air permeability, and water vapor permeability than any other cotton or cotton Tencel blended fabric. However, a downward trend of abrasion resistance was observed in Tencel or cotton Tencel blended fabric concerning the percentage change of Tencel. Additionally, the performance of the fabric was significantly improved by the percentage addition of Tencel fiber in the warp and weft directions. In addition, a denim fabric made entirely of cotton performed the least well when compared to fabrics made entirely of Tencel or a blend of Tencel and cotton.

Background: Children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) are at an increased risk of cardiovascular complications. The aim of this study was to assess the role of speckle tracking echocardiography in detecting subclinical myocardial damage in children with SCA. Methods: A cross-sectional case–control study was conducted at the echocardiography laboratory of the military hospital of Tunis between July and December 2018. Thirty patients with SCA were included. A control(C) group including 30 normally developing children was selected and matched to the SCA group by sex and age. We compared between the two groups: conventional echocardiographic parameters including cardiac output, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), thickness and the global longitudinal strain (GLS). The echocardiographic measurements were indexed according to body surface area. The left ventricular (LV) GLS association with clinical characteristics and echocardiographic parameters were also evaluated. Results: Patients and controls were matched for age and sex: the mean age was (11± 2years) in SCA group versus (12± 1 years) in C group with a sex ratio of (1.31 versus 1.27, respectively). Body surface area was comparable. LV hypertrophy and dilation were revealed in the SCA group, whereas measurements were normal in the C group. No significant differences were observed for cardiac output (p=0.4). LVEF were preserved in both groups. Introduction: Amyloidosis is a rare illness characterized by the deposition in organs of amyloid, which can be detected by histological staining. Amyloidosis restricted to the lower respiratory tract is unusual. Results: We reported the case of a 68-year-old woman with no history of chronic disease who presented with dyspnoea on exertion, cough and fatigue. The physical examination was unremarkable. A CT scan showed a cystic mass with a thickened wall in the apical segment of the left lower lobe. A biopsy of the mass was performed, and histological and immunohistochemical study confirmed the diagnosis of AL amyloidosis. The patient’s clinical and radiological symptoms spontaneously improved without treatment after 3 years. Conclusion: Amyloid-related cystic lung disease is a rare presentation of amyloidosis in the thorax. More case reports are required to determine if such masses can resolve without treatment and whether amyloid-associated cystic lung disease actually exists.

Abstract Parsonage–Turner syndrome (PTS) is a peripheral inflammatory neuropathy of unknown etiology. We present a rare case of a 50‐year‐old male patient with PTS post‐COVID‐19 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine. Symptoms occurred 15 days after the second dose. He was treated with corticosteroids, analgesics, and physical rehabilitation with a partial recovery.

Background: Massive haemoptysis is a rare symptom ofcoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Management can be very challenging due to the lack of clear recommendations. Case description: We report a case of massive recurrent haemoptysis in a young patient who tested positive for COVID-19 with successful management using endovascular embolization. Discussion: Life-threatening massive haemoptysis has rarely been reported as the only manifestation of COVID-19. Embolisation was the therapeutic option chosen to manage this emergency.

Background: Lymph node ratio (LNR) is the number of positive lymph nodes (LNs) divided by the total number of excised nodes. It has been shown to be of prognostic significance in a number of cancers. Aim: To investigate the relation between LNR and survival of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods: A retrospective study of 115 patients with HNSCC treated with curative surgery including neck dissection ± adjuvant treatment from January 2013 to December 2017. Results: The median LNR among node-positive patients was 0.14 which was used as a cutoff point to divide patients into two risk groups. Male gender, N2 stage, high grade and extranodal extension were significantly associated with high (≥0.14) LNR. In multivariate analysis, high LNR, higher TNM nodal stage and larger absolute number of positive LNs associated significantly with worse overall and disease-free survival. In a subgroup analysis of node-positive cases (n=54), LNR associated significantly with disease-free survival but not overall survival. On the other hand, the absolute number of positive LNs and N stage had a significant effect on both overall and disease-free survival. Conclusion: The LNR is of prognostic significance for survival and disease failure in HNSCC. This is also true for the absolute number of positive LNs. Standardization of LN status assessment and determination of an agreed upon cutoff value for LNR are needed before considering its incorporation in the staging system and treatment strategy.

Multilingual speakers tend to mix different languages in text and speech; a phenomenon referred to by linguists as “code-switching” (CS). Also, speakers switch between morphemes from various languages in the same word (intra-word CS). User-generated texts on social media are informal and contain a fair amount of different types of CS data. This data needs to be investigated and analyzed for several linguistic tasks. Language Identification (LID) is one of the important tasks that should be tackled for intra-word CS data. LID involves segmenting mixed words and tagging each part with its corresponding language ID. This work aimed at creating the first annotated Arabic–English (AR–EN) corpus for the CS intra-word LID task along with a web-based application for data annotation. We implemented two baseline models using Naïve Bayes and Character BiLSTM for AR–EN text. Our main model was constructed using segmental recurrent neural networks (SegRNN). We investigated the usage of different word embeddings with SegRNN. The highest LID system for tagging the entire data-set was obtained using SegRNN alone, achieving an F1-score of 94.84% and was able to recognize mixed words with F1-score equal to 81.15%. Besides, the model of the SegRNN with FastText embeddings achieved the highest results equal to 81.45% F1-score for tagging the mixed words.

Magnolia champaca Linn. has traditionally been used for medicinal activity in Asia for treating various chronic diseases as well as a source of food, medicines, and other commodities. Due to the long-used history of this plant, the present study was designed to explore the in vitro , in vivo and in silico anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic properties of the methanolic extract and fractions and the pure compound isolated from the most active chloroform fraction (CHF) of the stem bark of the plant. The isolated compound from the most active CHF was characterized and identified as a glycoside, trans-syringin, through chromatographic and spectroscopic ( 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR) analyses. In the in vitro anti-inflammatory assay, CHF was most effective in inhibiting inflammation and hemolysis of RBCs by 73.91 ± 1.70% and 75.92 ± 0.14%, respectively, induced by heat and hypotonicity compared to standard acetylsalicylic acid. In the egg albumin denaturation assay, CME and CHF showed the highest inhibition by 56.25 ± 0.82% and 65.82 ± 3.52%, respectively, contrasted with acetylsalicylic acid by 80.14 ± 2.44%. In an in vivo anti-inflammatory assay, statistically significant (p < 0.05) decreases in the parameters of inflammation, such as paw edema, leukocyte migration and vascular permeability, were recorded in a dose-dependent manner in the treated groups. In the antineoplastic assay, 45.26 ± 2.24% and 68.31 ± 3.26% inhibition of tumor cell growth for pure compound were observed compared to 73.26 ± 3.41% for standard vincristine. Apoptotic morphologic alterations, such as membrane and nuclear condensation and fragmentation, were also found in EAC cells after treatment with the isolated bioactive pure compound. Such treatment also reversed the increased WBC count and decreased RBC count to normal values compared to the untreated EAC cell-bearing mice and the standard vincristine-treated mice. Subsequently, in silico molecular docking studies substantiated the current findings, and the isolated pure compound and standard vincristine exhibited -6.4 kcal/mol and -7.3 kcal/mol binding affinities with topoisomerase-II. Additionally, isolated pure compound and standard diclofenac showed -8.2 kcal/mol and -7.6 kcal/mol binding affinities with the COX-2 enzyme, respectively. The analysis of this research suggests that the isolated bioactive pure compound possesses moderate to potent anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic activity and justifies the traditional uses of the stem bark of M. champaca . Amla ( Phyllanthus emblica ) has long been used in traditional folk medicine to prevent and cure a variety of inflammatory diseases. In this study, the antioxidant activity (DPPH scavenging and reducing power), anti-inflammatory activity (RBC Membrane Stabilization and 15-LOX inhibition), and anticoagulation activity (Serin protease inhibition and Prothrombin Time assays) of the methanolic extract of amla were conducted. Amla exhibited a substantial amount of phenolic content (TPC: 663.53 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid content (TFC: 418.89 mg GAE/g). A strong DPPH scavenging effect was observed with an IC 50 of 311.31 µg/ml as compared to standard ascorbic acid with an IC 50 of 130.53 µg/ml. In reducing power assay, the EC 50 value of the extract was found to be 196.20 µg/ml compared to standard ascorbic acid (EC 50  = 33.83 µg/ml). The IC 50 value of the RBC membrane stabilization and 15-LOX assays was observed as 101.08 µg/ml (IC 50 of 58.62 µg/ml for standard aspirin) and 195.98 µg/ml (IC 50 of 19.62 µg/ml for standard quercetin), respectively. The extract also strongly inhibited serine protease (trypsin) activity with an IC 50 of 505.81 µg/ml (IC 50 of 295.44 µg/ml for standard quercetin). The blood coagulation time (PTT) was found to be 11.91 min for amla extract and 24.11 min for standard Warfarin. Thus, the findings of an in vitro study revealed that the methanolic extract of amla contains significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulation activity. Furthermore, in silico docking and simulation of reported phytochemicals of amla with human 15-LOXA and 15-LOXB were carried out to validate the anti-inflammatory activity of amla. This study investigates the relationship between green accounting, energy efficiency, and environmental performance in the context of Bangladeshi pharmaceutical and chemical companies. The study also explores the mediating role of energy efficiency in the relationship between green accounting and environmental performance. A total of 326 responses were collected using a simple random sampling technique from pharmaceutical and chemical companies in Bangladesh. The study employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze the data. The results indicate that green accounting has a significant positive impact on both energy efficiency and environmental performance. Moreover, energy efficiency partially mediates the relationship between green accounting and environmental performance. The study also found that economic, environmental, and social practices of green accounting positively impact energy efficiency and environmental performance, with environmental practices having the highest impact. The findings of this study provide important insights for managers and policymakers of pharmaceutical and chemical companies in Bangladesh, highlighting the need for green accounting practices that promote environmental sustainability. The study suggests that integrating green accounting practices can lead to better energy efficiency and environmental performance, which can enhance the reputation and competitive advantage of these companies. Males have finite resources to spend on reproduction. Thus, males rely on a 'time investment strategy' to maximize their reproductive success. For example, male Drosophila melanogaster extends their mating duration when surrounded by conditions enriched with rivals. Here we report a different form of behavioral plasticity whereby male fruit flies exhibit a shortened duration of mating when they are sexually experienced; we refer to this plasticity as 'shorter-mating-duration (SMD)'. SMD is a plastic behavior and requires sexually dimorphic taste neurons. We identified several neurons in the male foreleg and midleg that express specific sugar and pheromone receptors. Using a cost-benefit model and behavioral experiments, we further show that SMD behavior exhibits adaptive behavioral plasticity in male flies. Thus, our study delineates the molecular and cellular basis of the sensory inputs required for SMD; this represents a plastic interval timing behavior that could serve as a model system to study how multisensory inputs converge to modify interval timing behavior for improved adaptation., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2023 Lee et al. A marked increase in the global prevalence of ischemic heart disease demands focused research for novel and more effective therapeutic strategies. At present, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) is the leading cause of the global incidence of heart attacks and a major contributor to many peripheral cardiac diseases. Decades of research have unearthed the complex and multidimensional pathophysiology of ACVD encompassing oxidative stress, redox imbalance, lipid peroxidation, pro-inflammatory signaling, hyperglycemic stress and diabetes mellitus, chronic low-grade inflammation and aging, immune dysregulation, vascular dysfunction, loss of hemostasis, thrombosis, and fluid shear stress. However, the scientific basis of therapeutic interventions using conventional understandings of the disease mechanisms has been subject to renewed scrutiny with novel findings in recent years. This critical review attempts to revise the pathophysiological mechanisms of atherosclerosis using a recent body of literature, with a focus on lipid metabolism and associated cellular and biochemical processes. The comprehensive study encompasses different molecular perspectives in the development and progression of coronary atherosclerosis. The review also summarizes currently prescribed small molecule therapeutics in inflammation and ACVD, and overviews prospective management measures under development including peptides and microRNA therapeutics. Cells undergo a controlled and systematic cycle of growth, replication and death. However, the integrity of this process gradually declines, leading to accumulation of senescent cells, a major hallmark of biological ageing. Dietary algae, particularly marine algae, have been long reported to exert anti-ageing benefits as cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals with limited understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying their activity. In this study, we have incorporated 1,202 previously reported bioactive small phycocompounds and subjected them to cheminformatic queries to assess these interactions. In-silico ADMET, 2-phase docking, metabolic pathway interaction and molecular dynamics simulations reveal multiple marine phycocompounds to have safe and effective senolytic potentials. We employed a novel deep convolutional neural network driven screening approach to identify (2R*, 3S*, 6R*, 7S*, 10R*, 13R*)-7,13-Dihydroxy-2,6-cyclo-1(9),14-xenicadiene-18,19-dial derived from Dilophus Fasciola , Laurendecumenyne A from Laurencia decumbens and 4-Bromo-3-ethyl-9-[(2E)-2-penten-4-yn-1-yl]-2,8-dioxabicyclo[5.2.1]decan-6-ol from Laurencia sp. to be potent inhibitors of multiple target senescent-cell anti-apoptotic pathway proteins. We simulated the best overall target inhibitors, specific protein inhibitors and molecular pathway regulators with each target protein and found stable interactions with minimum deviations (mean RMSD = 0.17 ± 0.01 nm) and gyrations (mean Rg = 1.64 ± 0.16 nm) of the simulated protein-compound complexes. Finally, molecular mechanics calculation suggests potent (mean ΔG = -69.56 ± 27.19 kCal/mol) and frequent hydrophobic interactions between the top performing marine phycocompounds and target proteins.

A metabolic network of energy-sensing molecular pathways drives the biological ageing process. Regulating certain network elements can help decelerate the ageing process and ameliorate ageing associated disorders. Bioactive phytopeptides are a prospective avenue for anti-ageing therapeutics and rejuvenation biotechnology. The present study investigates the potential of therapeutic plant peptides against cellular senescence by targeting three key proteins in the ageing network - target of rapamycin (mTOR), adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1). This investigation screened a library of reported bioactive peptides using standard cheminformatic methods including in-silico ADMET, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation and molecular mechanics calculation. The retrieved simulation data predict 25 diverse phytopeptides as potential safe and drug-like anti-ageing biologics with half-lives >20 h and bioavailability scores >0.40. The best docked peptide, Cycloleonuripeptide B, exhibited strong binding affinity and stable complex formation with mTOR (-17.5 kCal/mol), SIRT1 (-28.54 kCal/mol) and two active sites in AMPK (-41.8 kCal/mol; -36.0 kCal/mol) during molecular dynamics simulations. The computational study acts as a foundation for future laboratory and clinical research into the potential of repurposing therapeutic phytopeptides against cellular senescence and associated pathophysiology. Background: Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.), an evergreen medium-sized, spiny tree which have vast nutritional values and widely used in ayurvedic medicines and home remedies. The plant has also been a rich source of biologically active compounds. The present study was designed to isolate pure compound from ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract of leaves and to know the efficacy as antioxidant as well as its anti-tumor activity on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cell (EAC).  METHODS: The leaves were extracted with methanol and fractionated with different solvents. The isolation of the compound was carried out by column chromatography from ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) and structure was revealed by 1 H-NMR and 13 C NMR. The antioxidant activity was investigated by the scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals as well as the inhibition of oxidative damage of pUC19 plasmid DNA, hemolysis and lipid peroxidation induced by a water-soluble free radical initiator 2,2'-azo (2-asmidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) in human erythrocytes. In vivo anti-tumor activity of the compound was also evaluated by determining the viable tumor cell count, hematological profiles of experimental mice along with observing morphological changes of EAC cells by fluorescence microscope., Results: The isolated compound kaempferol-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnoside effectively inhibited AAPH induced oxidation in DNA and human erythrocyte model and lipid per oxidation as well as a stronger DPPH radical scavenging activity. In anti-tumor assay, at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight exhibit about 70.89 ± 6.62% EAC cell growth inhibition, whereas standard anticancer drug vincristine showed 77.84 ± 6.69% growth inhibition., Conclusion: The compound may have a great importance as a therapeutic agent in preventing oxidative damage of biomolecules and therapeutic use in chemotherapy., (© 2022. Heritiera fomes is a mangrove plant with a rich history of ethnomedicinal usage against chronic inflammation. Biochemical analyses of H. fomes have exposed a plethora of bioactive phytochemicals that contribute to this therapeutic effect by perturbing enzymes of a complex inflammatory network mediated by arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism. This study is the first instance of utilizing cheminformatic approaches to elucidate a molecular linkage between these phytochemical interventions and the multi-enzyme AA metabolic network regulation. Analysis of the simulations reflects H. fomes as a functional reservoir of multiple safe and potent natural anti-inflammatory compounds. The investigation suggests two phytocompounds extracted from the plant: a sesquiterpene lactone and a flavone glycoside, as candidate inhibitors of multiple catalytic checkpoints of the inflammatory network. Among the major constituents of Leea rubra (Family Vitaceae) leaves, phenolic and flavonoind compounds are most important for therapeutic purposes and the plant parts have been used in traditional medicine to treat several diseases for long. Thus, in order to scientifically confirm the traditional uses of the L. rubra leaves, the present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of the isolated flavones against AAPH induced oxidative damage to pUC19 DNA by gel electrophoresis and antineoplastic activity was evaluated on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice by evaluating percentage inhibition of cell growth, morphological changes of EAC cells and hematological parameters of the mice. The isolation was carried out by column chromatography and structure was revealed by 1 H-NMR and 13 C NMR. The result shows that, the isolated compound was identified as myricetin 4'-methoxy-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside based on previously reported data. The isolated flavone effectively inhibited AAPH-induced oxidative damage to DNA; because it could inhibit the formation of circular and linear forms of the DNA. In anti-proliferative assay, 76% growth inhibition of EAC cells was observed as compare to the control mice (p<0.05) at a dose 100 mg/kg body weight. Medicinal plants are sources of antioxidant which may protect the body against oxidative stress related diseases and can be used as human food supplements. In this investigation, seeds of Hygrophila schulli (M. R. Almeida & S. M. Almeida) (Fam.-Acanthaceae), a herbaceous plant well known for its medicinal properties, has been examined for antioxidant activity of crude methanolic extract (CME) and its fraction using in vitro and in vivo assay as well as their protective activity against oxidative damage of DNA and RBC. Total phenolic and flavonoid content have also been estimated using the aluminum chloride colorimetric and Folin-Ciocalteu method. Among the different fractions of CME, Ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) had higher antioxidant activity in vitro assay and was selected for in vivo antioxidant activity in cadmium intoxicated mice. The EAF showed a significant ( p < 0.05 ) increase in serum catalase and SOD activity compared to the control group. TBARS levels were restored to 17.42 and 19.19 nmol/mg protein, respectively, after treatment with EAF and standard ascorbic acid (AA); compared to the normal group (14.96 nmol/mg protein). Similarly, levels of albumin, bilirubin, uric acid, and alkaline phosphatase were also brought back to normal levels. EAF's protective role against oxidative damage of DNA has shown a significant reduction in destroying of nicked DNA. RBC as a target of oxidation by H 2 O 2 and HOCl, EAF showed inhibition of oxidation in a concentration-dependent manner, compared to standard gallic acid. Background: The Community-Oriented Program for Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) is intended to reduce the information deficit about the epidemiology of rheumatic diseases, particularly in rural communities in high-income countries. Multiple studies have been conducted using the WHO-International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR)-COPCORD core questionnaire in Bangladesh using the translated version in the Bangla language. Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the questionnaire are important to achieve better outcomes., Aim: To develop a culturally adapted, valid, and reliable Bangla version of the WHO-ILAR-COPCORD Core English Questionnaire to use as a rheumatic screening instrument among Bangla-speaking people., Methods: The original English WHO-ILAR-COPCORD questionnaire was translated into Bangla and adapted in the local socio-cultural context maintaining idiomatic, semantic, experiential, and conceptual equivalence between the English and Bangla versions. Pretesting was carried out among 30 patients and healthy attendants, following standard international recommendations. Content validity of the adapted Bangla version was assessed by the item- and scale-level content validity indices (I-CVI and S-CVI). The adapted Bangla version of the WHO-ILAR-COPCORD questionnaire was used to assess 120 patients with rheumatic problems and healthy individuals. Test-retest reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients., Results: The Bangla version of the WHO-ILAR-COPCORD questionnaire showed excellent content validity (I-CVI = 1, S-CVI = 1). The Estevez-Mansfield-Clarkson (EMC) equation and the (2+1)-dimensional Riemann wave (RW) equation are important mathematical models in nonlinear science, engineering and mathematical physics which have remarkable applications in the field of plasma physics, fluid dynamics, optics, image processing etc. Generally, through the sine-Gordon expansion (SGE) method only the lower-dimensional nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs) are examined. However, the method has not yet been extended of finding solutions to the higher-dimensional NLEEs. In this article, the SGE method has been developed to rummage the higher-dimensional NLEEs and established steady soliton solutions to the earlier stated NLEEs by putting in use the extended higher-dimensional sine-Gordon expansion method. Scores of soliton solutions are figure out which confirms the compatibility of the extended SGE method. The solutions are analyzed for both lower and higher-dimensional nonlinear evolution equations through sketching graphs for alternative values of the associated parameters. From the figures it is notable to perceive that the characteristic of the solutions depend upon the choice of the parameters. Electric current responsive magnetic composite particles are prepared in three steps. In the first step, spherical and mesoporous submicrometer-sized magnetic iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) core particles are prepared by solvothermal method. Then magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles are functionalized with amine groups using glycine, where the COO- group of glycine formed a bridging bidentate interaction with the hydroxyl groups on Fe 3 O 4 particle surface. Finally polyaniline (PAni) is grafted onto the functional Fe 3 O 4 surface via in situ seeded chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline. The average size of Fe 3 O 4 /PAni composite particles is 418.82 nm with mesoporous surface structure. Electron microscopic images confirmed that PAni pockets are localized on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 core particles. The surface composition is further confirmed by Fourier transform IR (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimety (TG) analyses. Fe 3 O 4 /PAni composite particles possessed strong paramagnetic property (47.77 emu g -1 ). The electrical conductivity of Fe 3 O 4 /PAni composite particles (1.46 × 10 -4 S cm -1 ) remained in the same order of magnitude as that of reference PAni particles (3.42 × 10 -4 S cm -1 ). The release behavior of biologically active molecules such as trypsin (TR), albumin (AL) and p-acetamido phenol (pAP) is studied using low intensity electric current as stimuli to prevent degradation. Depending on the nature, up to ˜ 33-88% of adsorbed biomolecules/drug are released from the electromagnetic Fe 3 O 4 /PAni composite particles. The hybrid structure of ZnO NWs with the presence of different dopants recently has drawn many interests from researchers due to the possibility to integrate multiple functionalities into one single structure. In this article, we investigated the morphology, crystal structure and ferromagnetism of the ZnO@Co/Ni hybrid core@shell NWs prepared by a facile electrochemical deposition method. The results show that a thin layer of Ni and Co coated on the surface of ZnO NWs (confirmed by XRD, EDS, TEM and Raman scattering) can create a significant improvement of ferromagnetic property in such hybrid core@shell NWs. In which, for the coating time of 10, 15, 20 min, the value of M s is around 0.67, 0.88 and 2.56 emu g -1 for ZnO@Co NWs, and about 0.013, 0.022 and 0.031 emu g -1 for ZnO@Ni NWs, respectively, in comparison with the number of 0.016 emu g -1 for pure ZnO NWs. Interestingly, we also found the temperature dependence of ferromagnetism of such Co/Ni coated ZnO NWs. Background: The various parts of Cresecentia cujete have some important biological activities. In folklore medicine leaves are used to treat hematomas, tumors and hypertension. Fruit decoction is used to treat diarrhea, stomachaches, cold, bronchitis, cough, asthma, and urethritis. The present study was designed to explore the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial potential of C. cujete leaves and stem bark. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by in vitro human red blood cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method and antibacterial activity by disc diffusion method., Methods: In vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by human red blood cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method while in vitro antibacterial activity was evaluated using cultures of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by disc diffusion method. Total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of the crude extract and fractions were also determined by Folin-Ciocalteu's phenol reagent and by aluminium chloride method, respectively., Results: The crude ethanol extract (CEE) of leaves and bark (concentration of each 1.0 mg/ml) demonstrated strong membrane stabilizing activity (53.86 and 61.85% protection, respectively), whereas their chloroform fractions (CHF) revealed moderate activity (48.74 ± 0.56 and 43.55 ± 6.20 %, respectively) compared with standard aspirin (concentration 0.10 mg/ml) which showed 75.81% protection in this test. All the samples showed a dose dependent anti-inflammatory activity in HRBC membrane stabilization test. Total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of the crude extract and fractions were also determined. Again, in in vitro antibacterial study, the extractives exhibited potent antibacterial activity., Conclusion: Results from this study showed that the leaves and bark of C. cujete possessed anti-inflammatory as well as antibacterial activities indicating that the plant extract has therapeutic potential against the bacterial infection and also have effect on disease processes by causing destabilization of biological membranes.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are considered patient-specific counterparts of embryonic stem cells as they originate from somatic cells after forced expression of pluripotency reprogramming factors Oct4, Sox2, Klf4 and c-Myc. iPSCs offer unprecedented opportunity for personalized cell therapies in regenerative medicine. In recent years, iPSC technology has undergone substantial improvement to overcome slow and inefficient reprogramming protocols, and to ensure clinical-grade iPSCs and their functional derivatives. Recent developments in iPSC technology include better reprogramming methods employing novel delivery systems such as non-integrating viral and non-viral vectors, and characterization of alternative reprogramming factors. Concurrently, small chemical molecules (inhibitors of specific signalling or epigenetic regulators) have become crucial to iPSC reprogramming; they have the ability to replace putative reprogramming factors and boost reprogramming processes. Moreover, common dietary supplements, such as vitamin C and antioxidants, when introduced into reprogramming media, have been found to improve genomic and epigenomic profiles of iPSCs. Background: Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) is a harmful pest of stored grain and flour-based products in tropical and subtropical region. In the present study, rhizome of Drynaria quercifolia (J. Smith) was evaluated for pesticidal and pest repellency activities against T. castaneum, using surface film method and filter paper disc method, respectively. In addition, activity of the isolated compound 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid was evaluated against the pest., Results: Chloroform soluble fraction of ethanol extract of rhizome of D. quercifolia showed significant pesticidal activity at doses 0.88 to 1.77 mg/cm(2) and significant pest repellency activity at doses 0.94 to 0.23 mg/cm(2). No pesticidal and pest repellency activity was found for petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol soluble fractions of ethanol extract as well as for 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid., Conclusion: Considering our findings it can be concluded that chloroform soluble fraction of rhizome of D. quercifolia is useful in controlling T. castaneum of stored grain and flour-based products.

Objective: To ascertain analgesic, antibacterial and central nervous system (CNS) depressant activities of ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and carbon tetrachloride fractions of methanol extract of Albizia procera (A. procera) leaves., Methods: Leaves extracts of A. procera were tested for analgesic activity by acetic acid induced and formalin test method in mice. The in vitro antibacterial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method. CNS depressant activity was evaluated by hole cross and open field tests., Results: All the extracts at 200 mg/kg exhibited significant (P<0.01) analgesic activity in acetic acid induced and formalin tests method in mice. Analgesic activity of the ethyl acetate fraction was almost same like as standard drug indomethacin in acetic acid induced method. The CNS depressant activity of the extracts at 500 mg/kg was comparable to the positive control diazepam as determined by hole cross and open field test method. The extracts exhibited moderate antimicrobial activity against all the tested microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Esherichia coli, Shigella soneii, Shigella boydii) at concentration of 0.8 mg/disc. The measured diameter of zone of inhibition for the extracts was within the range of 7 to 12 mm which was less than the standard kanamycin (16-24 mm)., Conclusions: It is concluded that all the extracts possess potential analgesic and CNS depressants activity. This study also showed that different fractions of methanol extract could be potential sources of new antimicrobial agents.

Background: Antioxidant compounds like phenols and flavonoids scavenge free radicals and thus inhibit the oxidative mechanisms that lead to control degenerative and other diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity in vitro, total phenolic and flavonoid contents in ethanol extracts and fractions of Crescentia cujete leaves and stem bark., Methods: Crescentia cujete leaves and bark crude ethanol extract (CEE) and their partitionates petroleum ether (PEF), chloroform (CHF), ethyl acetate (EAF) and aqueous (AQF) were firstly prepared. Different established testing methods, such as 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical, ferric reducing power (FRP), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assays were used to detect the antioxidant activity. Further, the total yield, total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of CEE and all the fractions were determined. Ethanol extracts of both leaves and stem bark were also subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening to detect the presence of secondary metabolites, using standard phytochemical methods (Thin layer chromatography and spray reagents)., Results: Phytochemical screening of crude ethanol extract of both leaves and stem bark revealed the presence of steroids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides and terpenoids. All the fractions and CEE of leaves and bark exhibited antioxidant activities, however, EAF of leaves showing the highest antioxidant activity based on the results of DPPH, FRP and TAC assay tests. The above fraction has shown the significant DPPH scavenging activity (IC50 = 8.78 μg/ml) when compared with standard ascorbic acid (IC50 =7.68 μg/ml). The TAC and FRP activities increased with increasing crude extract/fractions content. The TPC (371.23 ± 15.77 mg GAE/g extract) and TFC (144.64 ± 5.82 mg QE/g extract) of EAF of leaves were found significantly higher as compared to other solvent fractions for both leaves and bark. TPC were highly correlated with the antioxidant activity (R2 = 0.9268 and 0.8515 in DPPH test for leaves and bark, respectively)., Conclusion: The results of the study show that leaves of C. cujete possesses significant free radical scavenging properties compared with stem bark and a clear correlation exists between the antioxidant activity and phenolic content.

Objective: To evaluate the pharmacological activity against diarrhea of methanol and petroleum ether extract of Desmodium puchellum (Family: Fabaceae) leaves., Methods: The extract was evaluated for castor oil-induced diarrhea and enteropooling as well as intestinal motility in rats. Both of the extracts were given to the rats at 200 mg/kg orally. Loperamide was used as a standard drug for diarrhea., Results: The diarrheal severity was reduced significantly (P<0.05) by methanol and petroleum ether extracts by 31.95% and 28.33%, respectively, whereas 54.75% inhibition was found for standard drug loperamide at 5 mg/kg. The two extracts also significantly (P<0.05) reduced the intestinal volume in case of castor oil induced enteropooling., Conclusions: It is concluded that both fractions contain some biologically active ingredients that are active for anti-diarrheal actions whereas methanol fraction has better potential.

Herbal medicines have traditionally been used worldwide for the prevention and treatment of liver disease with fewer adverse effects. The leaves of the Syzygium jambos (SJL) plant were chosen and studied for their antioxidant activity in vitro and hepatoprotective activity in vivo. The antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract was examined in vitro using a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay, reducing capacity, total phenol, total flavonoid content, and total antioxidant capacity. The extract had significant dose-dependent antioxidant activity in all in vitro experiments. IC(50) values of SJL and ascorbic acid (standard) were found to be 14.10 and 4.87 μg/mL, respectively, according to a DPPH radical scavenging assay. Hepatoprotective activity of the plant extract was evaluated in a rat model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver damage. CCl(4) significantly altered serum marker enzymes, total bilirubin, total protein, and liver weight. The extract caused these values to return to normal in rats with CCl(4)-induced liver damage that were given SJL. This indicated the hepatoprotective potential of SJL and was comparable to use of the standard drug silymarin. Thus, the present study revealed that SJL may have antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity.

Mangrove plants are specialised plants that grow in the tidal coasts of tropic and subtropic regions of the world. Their unique ecology and traditional medicinal uses of mangrove plants have attracted the attention of researchers over the years, and as a result, reports on biological activity of mangrove plants have increased significantly in recent years. This review has been set out to compile and appraise the results on antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activity of mangrove plants. While the Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, and PubMed were the starting points to gather information, other pieces of relevant published literature were also adequately explored for this purpose. A total of 29 reports on 17 plant species have been found to report such activities. While 19 reports were on the biological activity of the crude extracts, 10 reports identified the active compound(s) of various chemical classes of natural products including terpenes, steroids, and flavonoids. This review finds that antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activity appears to be widespread in mangrove plants.

Zebrafish pou5f1, also known as pou2, encodes a POU-family transcription factor that is transiently expressed in the prospective midbrain and anterior hindbrain during gastrulation, governing brain development. In the present study, we found that the main regulatory elements reside in the proximal upstream DNA sequence from -2.2 to -0.12 kb (the -2.2/-0.1 region). The electrophoretic gel mobility shift assay (EMSA) revealed four functional octamer sequences that can associate with zebrafish Pou2/Pou5f1. The expression of mutated reporter constructs, as well as EMSA, suggested that these four octamer sequences operate in a cooperative manner to drive expression in the mid/hindbrain. We also identified a retinoic acid (RA)-responsive element in this proximal region, which was required to repress transcription in the posterior part of the embryo. These data provide a scheme wherein pou2/pou5f1 expression in zebrafish embryos is regulated by both an autoregulatory loop and repression by RA emanating from the posterior mesoderm.

Reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) after release of ankylosis by condylectomy is a challenging problem in maxillo-facial surgery. A successful reconstruction implies correct restoration of form and, in children, future symmetrical growth. Bilateral bony ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint in a female patient was diagnosed in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Bangabandhu Sheik Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) at the time when she had severe facial deformity with typical bird face appearance. The condition was treated with costochondral graft following a bilateral condylectomy. At the time of treatment, there was an expectation that further orthognathic surgery or bone grafting would be required to correct the skeletal deformity. However, with the release of the ankylosis and growth of the costochondral graft, a good functional and esthetic result can be achieved without further surgery. It is important that dentists be aware of the clinical signs and symptoms of TMJ ankylosis, to allow early diagnosis and treatment.

Jhelum valley is a subtropical to moist temperate region lying in the District Muzaffarabad. The present communication describes 61 species belonging to 19 families which are the source of fodder. The plants together with their local names, period of availability and other details with pertinent comments are enumerated. Results of fodder plant investigation conducted in Jhelum Valley during 2005-2006 are presented.

In vertebrate embryos, positioning of the boundary between the midbrain and hindbrain (MHB) and subsequent isthmus formation are dependent upon the interaction between the Otx2 and Gbx genes. In zebrafish, sequential expression of gbx1 and gbx2 in the anterior hindbrain contributes to this process, whereas in mouse embryos, a single Gbx gene (Gbx2) is responsible for MHB development. In the present study, to investigate the regulatory mechanism of gbx2 in the MHB/isthmic region of zebrafish embryos, we cloned the gene and showed that its organization is conserved among different vertebrates. Promoter analyses revealed three enhancers that direct reporter gene expression after the end of epiboly in the anterior-most hindbrain, which is a feature of the zebrafish gbx2 gene. One of the enhancers is located upstream of gbx2 (AMH1), while the other two enhancers are located downstream of gbx2 (AMH2 and AMH3). Detailed analysis of the AMH1 enhancer showed that it directs expression in the rhombomere 1 (r1) region and the dorsal thalamus, as has been shown for gbx2, whereas no expression was induced by the AMH1 enhancer in other embryonic regions in which gbx2 is expressed. The AMH1 enhancer is composed of multiple regulatory subregions that share the same spatial specificity. The most active of the regulatory subregions is a 291-bp region that contains at least two Pax2-binding sites, both of which are necessary for the function of the main component (PB1-A region) of the AMH1 enhancer. In accordance with these results, enhancer activity in the PB1-A region, as well as gbx2 expression in r1, was missing in no isthmus mutant embryos that lacked functional pax2a. In addition, we identified an upstream conserved sequence of 227bp that suppresses the enhancer activity of AMH1. Taken together, these findings suggest that gbx2 expression during the somitogenesis stage in zebrafish is regulated by a complex mechanism involving Pax2 as well as activators and suppressors in the regions flanking the gene.

Fgf8 is among the members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family that play pivotal roles in vertebrate development. In the present study, the genomic DNA of the zebrafish fgf8 gene was cloned to elucidate the regulatory mechanism behind the temporally and spatially restricted expression of the gene in vertebrate embryos. Structural analysis revealed that the exon-intron organization of fgf8 is highly conserved during vertebrate evolution, from teleosts to mammals. Close inspection of the genomic sequence and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that zebrafish fgf8 encodes two splicing variants, corresponding to Fgf8a and Fgf8b, among the four to seven splicing variants known in mammals. Misexpression of the two variants in zebrafish embryos following mRNA injection showed that both variants have dorsalizing activities on zebrafish embryos, with Fgf8b being more potent. Reporter gene analysis of the transcriptional regulation of zebrafish fgf8 suggested that its complicated expression pattern, which is considered essential for its multiple roles in development, is mediated by combinations of different regulatory regions in the upstream and downstream regions of the gene. Furthermore, comparison of the genomic sequence of fgf8 among different vertebrate species suggests that this regulatory mechanism is conserved during vertebrate evolution.

Psoralidin, bakuchicin, psoralin and angelicin, isolated from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, showed significant antibacterial activities against a number of Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria.

The cytotoxicity and antibacterial activities of crude extracts from the leaves of Sida rhombifolia were investigated. The ethyl acetate extract showed potent cytotoxicity with LC50 values (5.41 ppm) comparable to the reference standard, gallic acid.
