3. Effectiveness of Different Medium of Education to Imparting Knowledge at Bangladesh Open University

Abstract

Open and distance learning system meanly based on different types of media to impart education to the learners. Bangladesh Open University (BOU) offered education through open and distance learning system. There are two largest programs one is Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and another one is Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) offered by BOU through Open School (OS). To impart education to the learners, OS prepared text materials in the modular form and also broadcast audio-visual educational program through radio and television. At present, BOU provided printed materials to learners and telecast so many radio and TV programs for learners of the SSC and HSC program. Some survey stated that there are not enough evidences to fulfill the learner's objectives effectively. According to the previous survey result, study materials and audio-visual medium of teaching are of average quality (Islam 1988). The participants of this survey were mostly learners, tutors of the Open School programs and the media experts. This study has focus on how the educational program of the Open School could be more acceptable and enriched. (Contains 7 figures.)

4. Analytical Views of Student Enrollment Trend of Different Programs of Bangladesh Open University and Its Projection

Abstract

Bangladesh Open University (BOU) is only University of the country which provides mass education in different dimensions in science, agriculture, humanities, social science, health, etc. It intends to provide opportunities of education to all classes of people and create efficient and skilled manpower by improving the quality of education. BOU was established in 1992 by launching B. Ed. program. Now it has 20 formal programs and enrolled 781,904 students from beginning to till 2006. This study focuses on the analysis of students' enrollment trend at different programs of BOU as well as shows the projection of enrollment trend. The students' enrollment data prepared in 2006 by the Students Support services Division of BOU has been used in this study. The year wise students' enrollment pattern in different programs of BOU is analyzed using linear regression. The study showed that every year student's enrollment is rising for only four programs and declining for rest of the programs. The study reveals that some programs already have touched the border line of zero students' enrollment. At the same time, projection shows that if these trends continue at these rates, then students' enrollment of six of these programs would reach to nil in next few years. So, it is the time for the policy makers and the academics to rethink about those programs and take effective strategies to revive those programs. In the end, authors also pointed out some measures to be considered in offering effective and more popular educational program through BOU. (Contains 6 figures and 2 tables.)

Abstract

We demonstrate that the Evans-Rosenquist formulation of the optical mechanical analogy, so successful in the application to classical problems, also describes the motion of massless particles in the Schwarzschild field of general relativity. It is possible to obtain the well known equations for light orbit and radar echo delay which account for two exclusive tests of Einstein's field equations. 16. Pharmacovigilance in ASU and H Drugs: Standard in Healthcare

Abstract

Pharmacovigilance (PV) program of India (PVPI) aims to develop a comprehensive PV strategy for the drugs that come under allopathic system of medicine. However, most of the population is still using alternative systems of medicine (ASM) alone or with allopathic medication without knowing the effects. The PV in India is still in its infancy mode due to lack of appropriate clinical data. Our PV initiatives intended in the ASM, which included Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani. This was due to dearth of reports on investigations and research work involving ASM. To assess the current and previously reported toxicities in various ASM, the toxicity data from treatments listed various systems of medicines were collected and listed. Data collated from various research studies suggested that there were many reported toxicities and numerous adverse drug reactions (ADRs), not generally known to many people including the healthcare professionals. Still, high number of such incidences are yet to be studied systematically and taken care of the prophylactic measures and the ultimate goal of uplifting and implementing PV.

Key Clinical Message Bone marrow aspirations are used in the diagnosis of patients with hematological disorders. Cytological diagnosis becomes difficult when aspiration is a dry tap. Smears produced from the material left in the needle following a dry tap can provide valuable information either to complement or even make an accurate diagnosis.

Abstract

The optical-mechanical analogy involves the expression of geometrical optics and particle mechanics in the same mathematical language. In this paper, an especially simple version of the optical-mechanical analogy is extended to general relativity. A variational principle for the trajectories of photons and particles is obtained which is applicable to a broad class of metrics. This permits us to cast the exact equations of motion for both massive and massless particles into the form of Newtonian mechanics. The new equations of motion are illustrated by applications to the Schwarzschild metric.

Abstract

Distance education can be more learners centered if distance educators are aware of the problems, needs, attitudes and characteristics of their learners. The aim of this study was to compare the learners’ profile in terms of their attitude and demography between the learners of computer science and health science. A cross-sectional study design was used to collect data using a structured pre-tested self-administrated questionnaire. A total of 612 learners were responded, among them 71.1% were female. The mean age of the learners were 33.2 years and ranged from 21 to 52 years. The mean age of the learners of BSN was significantly higher than the learners of DCSA. The results significantly stated that the learners of DCSA program were resided far away than the learners of BSN program (p=0.012) whereas a total of 65.2% of the learners were resided on average 10 kilometer distance from the study centers. The monthly family income of the learners of DCSA program was significantly higher than the learners of BSN program. Significantly the highest number of learners (57.9%) of DCSA program were detached from their study than the learners (49.3%) of BSN program (p=0.012). Regarding the media programs, 62.7% of the learners gave their opinion that TV programs were at the level best but they wanted to watch TV program at the evening or night schedule. Based on opinions from the learners, revision of curricula and syllabuses, interactive printed materials, effective coordination between academics and administrative staffs and rescheduling of on-air TV programs are suggested. Results of this study might provide valuable information for the policy makers and future researchers to develop more appropriate learning materials and effective delivery mechanisms for the enhancement of open and distance learning.
