Abstract

A study over the southwest island region of the East China Sea in 1991, which was performed as part of the Western North Pacific Cloud-Radiation Experiment in Japan, illustrated the nature of dissimilarity of the linear distribution of liquid water in clouds to be influenced by the amount of water contained in the planetary boundary layer. A microwave radiometer was deployed in the study of the air truth of the total vertical liquid water path.

10. Observations of sulfur dioxide uptake and new particle formation in a midlatitude cumulus cloud

Abstract

Airborne measurements, obtained during the Asian Aerosol Characterisation Experiment (ACE-Asia), of SO2 and condensation nuclei (CN) concentrations were made in the local environment of a cumulus cloud band. Conserved quantities, wet equivalent potential temperature ?q, and total water content Q, were used to identify the sources of air detrained on the downwind side of the cumulus band. It was found that ~65% of the detrained air originated from below cloud base and the remainder was air that had been entrained from the free troposphere upwind of the cloud and subsequently been detrained. Calculation of the sources of the detrained air parcels enabled a prediction of the concentration of SO2 and CN, assuming that SO2 and CN experienced no processing within cloud. A comparison of the predicted concentration of SO2 and CN was made with those observed. The concentration of SO2 observed was less than predicted and the amount of SO2 scavenged within cloud was calculated. The CN concentration observed was also less than predicted and, moreover, inclusion of the loss of CN to cloud droplets due to Brownian scavenging resulted in an enhanced decrease of the number concentration of CN predicted. Clear air regions around the cloud exhibited no indication of being a major source of new particles. It was concluded that new particles were formed within cloud.

Abstract

A compact two-mode (de)multiplexer (TM-MUX) based on Si nanowire for mode-division multiplexing is designed. The TM-MUX is composed of two multimode interference (MMI) waveguides and a butterfly-shape tapered phase shifter between two MMI waveguides. Numerical simulations show that the designed device is compact compared with conventional-mode (de)multiplexer and operates as a TM-MUX in the whole C-band. 42. Initial and subsequent angiographic outcome of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty performed on internal mammary artery grafts.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE--To estimate the initial outcome and incidence of restenosis of angioplasty of internal mammary artery grafts in a retrospective study. METHODS--The study population consisted of 46 patients (48 lesions) who underwent first balloon angioplasty within the internal mammary artery graft. Most (37/48) were at the distal anastomosis. A few (8/48) were in the graft body. Six patients with the evidence of angiographic restenosis underwent a second angioplasty. RESULTS--The success rate and the restenosis rate of the first angioplasty was 73% and 30% respectively. Of the 34 patients (35 lesions) with a successful first angioplasty, 30 underwent follow up angiography with a restenosis rate of 30% (9/30). A second angioplasty was performed on six of the nine restenotic lesions, with a success rate of 83% and no restenoses. The percent diameter stenosis of the recipient native coronary artery was significantly greater in the restenosis group, at 75 (SD 27)% v 89 (17)%, p < 0.05. CONCLUSIONS--First angioplasty of 46 patients (48 lesions) within an internal mammary artery graft was performed with a success rate of 73% and a restenosis rate of 30% (follow up rate of 88%). The extent of the stenosis of the recipient native coronary artery may affect the restenosis rate. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
