Abstract

This study developed a new current-readout technique capable of handling measurements with high count rates reaching 1 Gcps. By directly capturing the output current of a photomultiplier as a digitized waveform, we estimated event rates, overcoming the limitations imposed by pulse pileup constraints and deadtimes. This innovative method was applied to a muon spin rotation/relaxation/resonance experiment at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, demonstrating its anticipated performance. Furthermore, we explored methods for estimating statistical uncertainty and investigated potential applications in analog-logic OR/AND gates. Overall, our findings reveal that the developed technique opens up avenues for the development of future non-binary logic circuits operating based on n-adic numbers.

15. Does Financial Difficulty Damage Cognitive Function?

Abstract

This study aims to estimate the effect of financial difficulty on cognitive function in a sample of the Japanese elderly population, using a panel dataset which includes randomly selected elderly Japanese citizens aged 60 and over from the National Survey of the Japanese Elderly. It is appropriate dataset to capture the effect on cognitive impairment in the sense that cognitive function can gradually degenerate after retirement in many cases. We estimate the effect of household income on the probability of the onset of cognitive impairment at a following survey point using random-effect probit model. There is a significant negative effect from financial difficulty on cognitive function. When participants’ household income drops by 1%, they are 2.2% more likely to develop cognitive impairment. Financial support plays an important role in improving recipients’cognitive function. It should be noted that we found the effect of financial difficulty even in Japan which has a universal health coverage.

Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by periodontopathogenic bacteria that form biofilms in periodontal pockets. The gingival epithelium acts as the first physical barrier in fighting attacks by periodontopathogenic pathogens, such as the primary etiological agent Porphyromonas gingivalis, and various exogenous chemicals, as well as regulates the local innate immune responses. Therefore, the development of novel oral care products to inhibit inflammatory reactions caused by bacterial infection and protect the gingival epithelium is necessary. Juncus effusus L. has generally been used as an indigenous medicine, such as a diuretic, an antipyretic, and an analgesic, in ancient practice. In this study, we examined the effects of a water extract from J. effusus L. on the inhibition of the inflammatory reaction elicited by bacterial infection and protection of the oral epithelium by chemical irritation. Pretreatment of oral epithelial cells with the water extract from J. effusus L. significantly reduced P. gingivalis or its lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) mediated production of chemokines (interleukin-8 and C-C-chemokine ligand20) in a concentration-dependent manner with comparable to or greater effects than epigallocatechin gallate and protected oral epithelial cells from injury by chemical irritants, cetylpyridinium chloride, and benzethonium chloride. Moreover, the water extract from J. effusus L. in the presence of antimicrobial agents or antifibrinolytics already used as ingredients in mouthwash could significantly reduce the production of chemokines from P. gingivalis LPS-stimulated oral epithelial cells in a concentration-dependent manner. These findings suggest that the water extract from J. effusus L. is potentially useful for oral care to prevent oral infections, such as periodontal infections, and maintain oral epithelial function.

Results demonstrate that while calcium/calmodulin-binding to the calcium/calmodulin dependent protein kinasealpha is essential for latter's activation and efficient phosphorylation of the target protein, enhancement of calcium/calmodulin dependent protein kinasebeta activity is not dependent on calcium/calmodulin.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of acidic primers on adhesive bonding to sintered aluminum oxide (alumina). Alumina disks were primed with one of the following materials: Acryl Bond, All Bond 2 Primer B, Alloy Primer, Estenia Opaque Primer, Eye Sight Opaque Primer, M.L. Primer, MR. Bond, and Super-Bond Liquid. Specimens were then bonded with an acrylic resin initiated with partially oxidized tri-n-butylborane (TBBO), and bond strengths were determined. Unprimed specimen was employed as the control. Average bond strength before thermocycling ranged from 20.5 to 41.9 MPa, whereas post-thermocycling bond strength ranged from 0.0 to 40.0 MPa. Of the eight primers, Estenia Opaque Primer and Alloy Primer showed better adhesive performance than the other materials. It could thus be concluded that either Estenia Opaque Primer or Alloy Primer--which contained an adhesive monomer, 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)--was recommended for bonding alumina with TBBO-initiated resin., Dental materials journal, 26(5), pp.642-646; 2007
