4. Shear‐Dominant Continental Rifting in Northern Ryukyu Revealed by Ambient Noise Tomography.

Abstract

In this study, we reveal the deformational structure of the crust of the northern part of the Ryukyu Arc and Okinawa Trough using ambient noise tomography. Compared with southern Ryukyu, the northern segment exhibits a wide and shallow basin, a crust without localized thinning, slow extension rates, and highly arc‐oblique, right‐lateral retreat of the Ryukyu Arc. We present both isotropic and azimuthally anisotropic shear‐wave velocity models using data recorded by an ocean‐bottom seismometer array and nearby island stations. The isotropic model demonstrates a monotonic decrease in velocity from the backarc to the forearc, in accord with the accretionary‐prism origin of the latter. The resolved azimuthal anisotropy exhibits arc‐parallel and arc‐perpendicular fast shear‐wave polarization directions in the upper to mid‐crust and the lower crust to uppermost mantle in much of the arc and backarc, respectively. We interpret the arc‐parallel anisotropy as resulting from the anisotropic fabrics aligned by the vertical shearing imposed by the right‐lateral motion of the Ryukyu Arc. The underlying arc‐perpendicular anisotropy may be attributed to horizontal shearing driven by corner flow in the mantle wedge. We found arc‐perpendicular anisotropy in the forearc upper crust, which may reflect crack alignment caused by the collision of the Amami Plateau. The oblique arc retreat and the resolved deformation fabrics in the arc and backarc together attest to the shear‐dominant, transtensional nature of the northern Ryukyu continental rift system. Some of the features in northern Ryukyu may be better explained from the perspective of transtensional rifting. Plain Language Summary: The northeastern margin of the Eurasian Plate is currently separating from the continent, creating the non‐volcanic Ryukyu Arc and the Okinawa Trough backarc basin. Two‐dimensional cross‐arc seismic imaging has revealed significant variations in the seafloor morphology and crustal structure along the arc; however, some of the rifting characteristics are difficult to reconcile when they coexist in the same segment. Meanwhile, GPS (Global Positioning System) velocities measured along the arc indicate highly oblique arc retreat in the north and nearly orthogonal retreat in the south. The consequences of oblique rifting in northern Ryukyu remain poorly understood. To address these questions, three‐dimensional imaging of the crust is crucial. In this study, we construct an ambient noise‐based three‐dimensional tomographic model in the northern segment of this continental margin rift system constrained by ocean‐bottom seismometer and land station data. The anisotropic part of the model reveals the deformation structures of the backarc, arc, and part of the forearc, providing insights into the nature of the transtensional rifting and resolving apparent contradictions in coexisting features. Abstract

Temporary broadband seismic observations, consisting of pilot and main observations, were conducted from January 2016 to January 2019 to study the seismic structure of the Earth’s deep interior, and the crust and upper mantle structure beneath Thailand. Nearly fifty percent of the forty stations initially deployed were damaged by serious flooding and lightning. Nevertheless, the quality of the data collected permitted an analysis of local earthquakes and teleseismic signals. The data center at the Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo will provide continuous and event-edited seismograms, with state-of-health information (including clock information) from the spring of 2021.

26. Alcohol intake and nonfatal acute myocardial infarction in Japan

Abstract

The relation between alcohol and nonfatal acute myocardinal infarction (AMI) was examined in a case-control study of 89 male patients and 271 control subjects in Fukuoka, Japan. Patients admitted for the first AMI at 2 hospitals in Fukuoka City were aged 40 to 69 years, and control subjects were recruited based on the telephone directory of the city. Information on alcohol drinking and potential coronary risk factors was obtained by using a self-administered questionnaire, and past drinkers were separated from lifelong abstainers in the analysis. After adjustment for age, occupation, cigarette smoking, strenuous exercise, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and parental heart disease, the risk of AMI was progressively less with increasing levels of alcohol consumption. With those who never drank as a referent, adjusted odds ratios for current drinkers consuming, Research has suggested that moderate alcohol intake is associated with a decreased risk of heart disease. Some studies suggest that risk continues to decrease with increasing levels of consumption, while others find that total abstention or excessive alcohol intake is related to a higher risk of disease compared with low or moderate intake. Another problem with study findings is that decreased risk may be associated with some other attribute of light drinkers other than alcohol intake itself. The relation between alcohol intake and nonfatal acute myocardial infarctions (AMI, heart attacks) in Japan was evaluated. Information was obtained from 89 men with a first AMI and 271 healthy control men. Alcohol use was similar among different age groups. In healthy subjects, smoking and hypertension were more prevalent among heavier drinkers. Risk factors for heart disease such as exercise, body weight, high blood pressure, diabetes, family history of heart disease, and socioeconomic class were studied. After adjusting for these risk factors, analysis showed that the risk of AMI decreased with increasing alcohol intake. Compared with subjects who were lifetime abstainers, the adjusted risk of AMI was decreased by half in those who were past drinkers. Compared to abstainers, subjects who currently drank less than 30 milliliters (about 1 ounce) of alcohol per day (ml/day) had a risk of 1.11 (i.e. were 1.11 times more likely to have an AMI), those who drank up to 59 ml/day had a risk of 0.31, and those who drank over 60 ml/day had a risk of AMI of 0.13. Abstract

Atmospheric pressure waves were recorded within 5 h after the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake (Mw = 9.0) by sensitive microbarographs at four regional stations and eight International Monitoring System stations at distances up to 6700 km. While its apparent phase velocity between the regional stations is 341 m/s, the global stations indicate weak dispersive wave trains with low frequencies between 1.6 and 4.8 mHz, propagating with an average phase velocity around 364 m/s. The low-frequency waves may be interpreted as acoustic-gravity waves excited by upheaval and depression of the sea surface in the source region due to coseismic uplift and subsidence of the sea bottom during this great thrust earthquake. Assuming the source dimension and the average coseismic vertical displacements of the sea surface, with reference to tsunami observations, we calculate synthetic waveforms for some of the far-field stations by incorporating a standard sound velocity structure in the atmosphere up to an altitude of 220 km. The synthetics provide reasonable explanations for the general features of the observed waveforms, suggesting possible ranges for the source parameters generating these acoustic-gravity waves. Our analysis suggests that the average initial upheaval of the sea surface in the central zones of the source region may exceed 4–6 m and that the risetime of the coseismic deformation may be in the range between 3 and 4 min. In the eastern narrow zone adjacent to the Japan Trench, the deformation has significantly higher initial amplitude and shorter risetime.

Abstract

The Ontong Java Plateau (OJP) in the southwest Pacific is the largest oceanic large igneous provinces (LIP) on Earth. Detailed seismic structure of the plateau has not been understood well because of sparse seismic stations. We investigated seismic attenuation of the mantle beneath the plateau by analyzing data from temporary seismic stations on the seafloor and islands in and around the plateau. We analyzed the spectra of multiple ScS waves to determine the average attenuation of the mantle (QScS) beneath the plateau. We estimated the average QScSvalues for the paths with bounce points located in the plateau to be 309, which is significantly higher than the average (i.e., weaker attenuation than average) estimated in the western Pacific and is close to that of stable continents. We obtained positive residuals of 6 s for travel times of multiple ScS waves, which indicate that the average S velocity in the entire mantle beneath the OJP is low. While the positive residuals are at least partially attributable to the Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Province (Pacific LLSVP), it is difficult to conclude whether low-velocity anomalies are required in the OJP upper mantle to explain the residuals from the multiple ScS analysis.

45. Clinical study of tumor markers in prostatic cancer

Abstract

未治療前立腺癌52例, 前立腺肥大症44例に対しPAP, γ-Sm, PSAを同時に測定した.1)前立腺癌における各腫瘍マーカー単独での陽性率はPSAが最も高く, 特に早期癌で顕著であり, 診断効率でもPSAが最も優れていた.2)PAP, γ-Sm, PSAを組み合わせても, PSA単独に比べさほど陽性率は上昇せず, また診断効率では2種あるいは3種のどの組み合わせよりもPSA単独の方が優れており, 組み合わせの意義はあまりみられなかった.3)前立腺癌の細胞分化度と各腫瘍マーカーの値および陽性率との間には一定の関係はみられなかった.4)前立腺癌においてPAPとγ-Sm, PAPとPSAの間には有意な相関があるものの, γ-SmとPSAとの間には相関はなかった, We measured prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), gamma-seminoprotein (gamma-Sm) and prostatic specific antigen (PSA) levels simultaneously in the serum of 52 patients with untreated prostatic cancer and 44 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy to assess the clinical usefulness of these tumor markers. PAP and PSA were measured by radioimmunoassay and gamma-Sm by enzyme immunoassay. The positive rates of PAP, gamma-Sm and PSA in patients with prostatic cancer were 50.0, 61.5 and 69.2%, respectively, and those in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy were 11.4, 13.6 and 13.6%, respectively. In patients with early stage prostatic cancer (stage A and B), the positive rates of PAP, gamma-Sm and PSA were 20.8, 41.7 and 54.2%. The efficiency of PSA was the highest among the three markers. The positive rate of the combination assay of PAP and PSA, that of gamma-Sm and PSA and that of PAP, gamma-Sm and PSA were slightly higher than that of the PSA assay alone. However, the efficiency of the PSA assay alone was higher than that of any combination. No significant correlation was found between histopathological grade and the level of each tumor marker. A significant correlation was found between PAP and gamma-Sm (r = 0.68, P less than 0.001), and between PAP and PSA (r = 0.61, P less than 0.001), but there was no correlation between gamma-Sm and PSA. These results suggest that PSA is the most useful marker and the combination assay of multiple markers is not so advantageous, at least for screening of prostatic cancer.

48. Acoustic-gravity waves from the source region of the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake (Mw=9.0)

Abstract

Atmospheric pressure waves were recorded within 5 h after the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake (Mw = 9.0) by sensitive microbarographs at four regional stations and eight International Monitoring System stations at distances up to 6700 km. While its apparent phase velocity between the regional stations is 341 m/s, the global stations indicate weak dispersive wave trains with low frequencies between 1.6 and 4.8 mHz, propagating with an average phase velocity around 364 m/s. The low-frequency waves may be interpreted as acoustic-gravity waves excited by upheaval and depression of the sea surface in the source region due to coseismic uplift and subsidence of the sea bottom during this great thrust earthquake. Assuming the source dimension and the average coseismic vertical displacements of the sea surface, with reference to tsunami observations, we calculate synthetic waveforms for some of the far-field stations by incorporating a standard sound velocity structure in the atmosphere up to an altitude of 220 km. The synthetics provide reasonable explanations for the general features of the observed waveforms, suggesting possible ranges for the source parameters generating these acoustic-gravity waves. Our analysis suggests that the average initial upheaval of the sea surface in the central zones of the source region may exceed 4–6 m and that the risetime of the coseismic deformation may be in the range between 3 and 4 min. In the eastern narrow zone adjacent to the Japan Trench, the deformation has significantly higher initial amplitude and shorter risetime.
