Abstract

Semantic similarity appears to have a facilitative effect on short-term memory (STM), which contrasts with the detrimental effects of phonological and visual similarity on STM. Given that STM theories generally posit detrimental effects of similarity, it is theoretically and empirically important to test the semantic similarity effect. Recently, a review study proposed that semantic similarity per se would have a detrimental effect while semantic association and additional retrieval cues, which are facilitative of STM, would work as confounding factors for the semantic similarity effect. The present study tested this view by minimizing the influence of these possible confounding factors in the experiment and by utilizing a new index of semantic similarity in the analysis. The results of the present study indicated that the semantic similarity indeed had a detrimental effect on immediate serial recall correct-in-position scores. An examination based on two other scoring methods (i.e., item correct and absolute order errors) further suggested that the locus of the detrimental effect of semantic similarity is in order memory. In addition, other semantico-lexical variables (e.g., word length, frequency, and imageability) were also analyzed. Patterns of these variables’ effects on item memory were complementary to the effect of semantic similarity on order memory. From a theoretical point of view, as the detrimental effect of semantic similarity demonstrated by the present study is comparable to phonological and visual similarity effects, this finding implies a store based on semantic information or a general process for various types of information.

Abstract

Today, surgeons almost always create a stoma through a left or right rectus muscle-splitting incision to avoid placement at the midline laparotomy wound of patients. In the past, some surgeons preferred to create a colostomy in the umbilicus, but the practice did not gain general acceptance and the umbilicus had been regarded as a site to avoid for stoma creation. However, this attitude has recently changed in the field of pediatric surgery and adult laparoscopic surgery. The umbilical site has been used for temporary colostomies for neonates or infants with anorectal malformation or Hirschsprung’s disease. Further, umbilical diverting loop ileostomies have been developed to prevent leakage in adult patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery, whose umbilicus had already been open at the time of the bowel extraction. These reports indicate the umbilical stoma is feasible, safe and cosmetically superior when reversed. Here we review the history of stoma creation and recent utilization of the umbilical stoma and provide a brief discussion on future perspectives.

Abstract

One of the vertical magnetic recordings medium materials of the hard disk drive (HDD) is a Fe/Pt thin film. The development of ultra-high density magnetic recording medium in next generation is expected the magnetic disks such as HDD with capacity enlargement of the data. In order to study effectiveness of the proposed sputtering method, we evaluated micro structure, magnetic and the mechanical properties of a Fe/Pt thin film by some sputtering process conditions. From research results, effect sputtering conditions on micro-structure and mechanical properties of Fe/Pt nano film are verified.

Abstract

The antitumor effect of recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (rHu-TNF) on 2 human testicular tumors (embryonal carcinoma, TTSC-1, and teratocarcinoma, TTSC-4) heterotransplanted in nude mice was studied. Therapeutic antitumor effect was observed more evidently in TTSC-1 than TTSC-4 when more than 5 x 10(3) U/mouse of rHu-TNF was administered intratumorally. Complete tumor regression was observed in both TTSC-1 and TTSC-4 after intratumoral administration of rHu-TNF. Histological findings correlated well with the decrease in tumor volume of treated tumors. In contrast to these data, little antitumor effect was observed when the same dose of rHu-TNF was administered intravenously to nude mice bearing these tumors. In conclusion, intratumoral administration of rHu-TNF was a more effective and safe method than intravenous administration against human testicular tumors heterotransplanted in nude mice.

50. A single intracoronary injection of midkine reduces ischemia/reperfusion injury in Swine hearts: a novel therapeutic approach for acute coronary syndrome

Abstract

Several growth factors are effective for salvaging myocardium and limiting infarct size in experimental studies with small animals. Their benefit in large animals and feasibility in clinical practice remains to be elucidated. We investigated the cardioprotective effect of midkine (MK) in swine subjected to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). I/R was created by left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion for 45 min using a percutaneous over-the-wire balloon catheter. MK protein was injected as a bolus through the catheter at the initiation of reperfusion [MK-treated (MKT) group]. Saline was injected in controls (CONT). Infarct size/area at risk (24 h after I/R) in MKT was almost five times smaller than in CONT. Echocardiography in MKT revealed a significantly higher percent wall thickening of the interventricular septum, a higher left ventricular (LV) fractional shortening, and a lower E/e(') (ratio of transmitral to annular flow) compared with CONT. LV catheterization in MKT showed a lower LV end-diastolic pressure, and a higher dP/dt(max) compared with CONT. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling-positive myocytes and CD45-positive cell infiltration in the peri-infarct area were significantly less in MKT than in CONT. Here, we demonstrate that a single intracoronary injection of MK protein in swine hearts at the onset of reperfusion dramatically reduces infarct size and ameliorates systolic/diastolic LV function. This beneficial effect is associated with a reduction of apoptotic and inflammatory reactions.
