18. Severe Hypermagnesemia with Normal Renal Function Can Improve with Symptomatic Treatment

Abstract

Hypermagnesemia is a rare disorder and commonly occurs in patients with renal dysfunction. Supportive therapy for hypermagnesemia consists of administration of high-volume fluids, calcium preparation, diuretics, and, in severe cases, hemodialysis. Few reports have described severe hypermagnesemia patients with normal renal function who improved without hemodialysis. A 56-year-old woman presented with a history of constipation in spite of taking constipation medicine, including MgO. She was brought to our emergency department due to vomiting and diffuse distension of the abdomen. Sudden vomiting, weakness, and lower level of consciousness occurred during examination. Her blood pressure dropped to 77/34 mmHg, and deep tendon reflexes of the limbs disappeared. Abdominal computed tomography showed bowel distension with wall edema, and biochemical testing showed serum Mg at 13.5 mg/dl. She was diagnosed with severe hypermagnesemia associated with intestinal obstruction and administered intravenous loop diuretics and calcium preparation in addition to high volumes of normal saline. As the serum Mg level steadily declined, her level of consciousness returned to usual. This case suggests that severe hypermagnesemia can occur in patients with normal renal function and constipation under MgO. Severe hypermagnesemia with normal renal function can improve with symptomatic treatment without hemodialysis.

Abstract

In this study, we had investigated the benthic deep-sea fauna using the dredge and beam trawl in the region from the continental shelf to the continental slope of the Sea of Kumano, Mie Prefecture, during the No．1722 research voyage of the training ship Seisui-Maru of Mie University. The survey was carried out at 16 stations covering a depth range of 113－1059 m. The results of the survey, 14 phyla had been confirmed. Arthropod, echinoderm, annelid and molluscan macrobenthos were collected from all of the stations. The phylum number of each station was in the range from 4 to 11. The largest number of phyla had been confi rmed at St．10D of boulders bottom（768－800 m depth）. Meiobenthos confi rmed in our sample were kinorhynchs, nematodes, tardigrades, loriciferans and small arthropods such as tanaidaceans, copepods and cumaceans. In addition to free-living species, parasitic copepods, isopods, platyhelminthes, acanthocephalans and nematodes had been found in fish, crustaceans and polychaetes.

Abstract

1999年11月及び2000年6月に日本海最西部の水深43-133mの海域において6科11属13種のクモヒトデが採集された。この中で5種、Ophiophrixus acanthius、Ophiocentrus koehleri、Amphiura (A.) teptobrachia、Amphiophiura pomphophora、Ophiomusium scatrareが日本海初記録であった。日本海全域からこれまでに採集されたクモヒトデ類の動物地理についても論じた。, Thirteen species of ophiuraids belonging to 6 families and 11 genera were collected at depths of 43-183 m in the westernmost part of the Sea of Japan in November 1999 and July 2000. The following 5 species, were the first record from the sea: Ophioplirixus acanthius H. L. CLARK, 1911, Ophiocentrus koehleri GISLÉN, 1926, Amphiura (A.) leptabrachia MuRAKAMI, 1942, Amphiophiura pomphophora (H. L. CLARK, 1911), and Ophiomusium scalare LYMAN, 1878. The zoogeography of ophiuroids occurring in the Sea of Japan is also discussed.

27. A new species of Stegophiura(Ophiuroidea, Ophiopyrgidae) from the mid-Cretaceous of southern Japan

Abstract

Well-preserved external moulds of articulated brittle stars from the middle to late Cenomanian (early–Late Cretaceous) “Lower formation” of the Mifune Group on the island of Kumamoto, southern Japan, are described as a new species of the genus Stegophiura, S. miyazakii. Extinct (Late Cretaceous) species previously assigned to Stegophiuraare now shown to represent other genera; here, we transfer S.? hagenowiand S.? nekvasilovaeto the extant ophiopezid genus Ophiopezaand S.? trispinosato the extinct ophiacanthid Sabinacantha. The present specimens are thus inferred to be the sole wholly extinct representative and the oldest record of the genus Stegophiura.

Abstract

Well preserved, articulated brittle star skeletons from the early Carnian (early Late Triassic)HalobiaShales of Yamaguchi, Japan, are described as a new genus and species of the family Ophiacanthidae:Leadagmara gracilispina. The new form constitutes the oldest unequivocal representative of this extant ophiuroid family, significantly extending its stratigraphical range. The first cladistic analysis of the Ophiacanthidae including all extant genera suggestsL. gracilispinaholds a basal, but not the basalmost, position within the family, forming a sister group with the extantOphiomedeaandOphioprististo the other ophiacanthids except forOphiologimus, which itself is sister to all other ophiacanthids. These results imply that ophiacanthids originated in the pre-Carnian. A critical re-evaluation of the ophiacanthid fossil record reveals that the vast majority of records consist of dissociated lateral arm plates, which provide no insights into divergence times of the lineages. Among the few records of articulated specimens, onlyInexpectacantha acrobaticafrom the Pliensbachian of France proved sufficiently well-known to yield phylogenetically relevant information. Abstract

Stopped-flow spectroscopy was used to study the cationic propagating species in the polymerization of 1,3-bis(P-vinylphenyl)propane and 1,2-bis(P-vinylphenyl)ethane by tri-fluoromethanesulfonic acid in 1,2-dichloroethane. The cationic species generated from the former monomer was found to show a bathochromically shifted absorption at 360 nm, exceeding those of the cationic species generated from the latter monomer (345 nm) and P-methylstyrene (332 nm). This shift is ascribed to the stabilization of the cationic center by an intramolecular through-space interaction with the adjacent terminal styryl group. This stabilization was also suggested by molecular orbital calculation. It is concluded that this interaction facilitates the cyclopolymerization of 1,3-bis(P-vinylphenyl)propane.

Abstract

Dehydration of a-phenethyl alcohols was carried out in DMSO at 170°C by a mixed catalyst of zinc chloride and trichloroacetic acid. By this reaction, a,?-bis(p-vinylphenyl)alkanes and 1,3-bis(4-vinylnaphthyl)propane were prepared in a good yield of 52 to 88%.

41. The Computer-assisted Characterization of Terpenes and Related Compounds by the Use of Combined Spectrometric Data

Abstract

Basic research to prepare a combined retrieval system based on three different sets of spectrometric data, infrared, mass, and 1H NMR, for terpenes and related compounds is described. The system may be used either for searching all three types of spectra, for two, or for one only. The results of 112 test searches are presented. The combined method is proved to be a good tool for the identification of such compounds, especially those in a structurally close relationship.
