The research based on High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) has increased significantly due to the fact that HEAs contain numerous primary elements, allowing for a much greater variety of their compositions than conventional alloys. We have investigated two HEAs namely, FeTiVNi and CoFeVNi for their structural and electronic properties that include total energy minimization, equilibrium lattice parameter a0, Density of States (DOS), partial Density of States (pDOS) and band structure of the systems. To predict the stable phase of the alloys, we have calculated atomic size difference (δ) and Valence Electron Concentration (VEC) parameters empirically. The results from empirically calculated parameters and the total energy minimization agrees that stable phase for FeTiVNi HEA is body centered cubic (bcc) and for CoFeVNi is face centered cubic (fcc). The findings show that these HEAs have metallic phases with overlapping bands near fermi region.

Carbon based heterostructures are extremely important in the field of material science as the junction of two carbon nanomaterials strongly influence the properties of a material. In present work, the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of covalently attached C60 cage with armchair and zigzag GNRs have been investigated using density functional theory. AGNR-nanobuds don't form stable structures, owing to their positive values of the interaction energy. However, pure and N/B doped ZGNR-nanobud form stable structures with [2+2]hhT mode, hence presenting the possibility of their formation. Average diameter for N doped ZGNR-nanobuds decreases as the C-N bond length is lower than the C-C bond length whereas average diameter for doped ZGNR increases due to the large C-B bond length. The considered complexes are magnetic in nature having a finite value of total magnetic moment. Increase in total magnetic moment is due to the induced localized magnetic moments near dopant sites, whereas decrease in the total magnetic moments is due to the reduction in magnetic moments at C-sites near connecting bond atoms. The significant variation in electronic density of states near the Fermi level leads to change in the metallic behaviour of ZGNR-nanobuds. Mulliken charge analysis shows that in N-doped nanobud, there is a transfer of charge from N to surrounding C atoms due to their electronegativity difference, and there is a gain in charge of B from surrounding C atoms. The unique electronic and magnetic properties of nanobuds can lead to the possible applications in the field of magnetic nano devices.

The geometric, electronic and magnetic properties of strained graphene nanoribbons were investigated using spin polarized calculations within the framework of density functional theory . Cases of compressive stress along the longer axis of a nanoribbon and tensile stress at the midpoint and perpendicular to the plane of the nanoribbon were considered. Significant structural changes were observed including the formation of nanoripples. The calculated electronic and magnetic properties strongly depend on the size and shape of nanoribbons. The tunable magnetic properties of strained nanoribbons can be employed for designing magnetic nano-switches.

Magnetic carbon nano-structures have potential applications in the field of spintronics as they exhibit valuable magnetic properties. Symmetrically sized small fullerene dimers are substitutional doped with nitrogen (electron rich) and boron (electron deficient) atoms to visualize the effect on their magnetic properties. Interaction energies suggests that the resultant dimer structures are energetically favourable and hence can be formed experimentally. There is significant change in the total magnetic moment of dimers of the order of 0.5 uB after the substitution of C atoms with N and B, which can also be seen in the change of density of states. The HOMO-LUMO gaps of spin up and spin down electronic states have finite energy difference which confirm their magnetic behaviour, whereas for non-magnetic doped dimers, the HOMO-LUMO gaps for spin up and down states are degenerate. The optical properties show that the dimers behave as optical semiconductors and are useful in optoelectronic devices. The induced magnetism in these dimers makes them fascinating nanocarbon magnetic materials.

In this paper, the effect of B and N doping on the phonon induced thermal conductivity of graphene has been investigated. This study is important when one has to evaluate the usefulness of electronic properties of B and N doped graphene. We have performed the calculations by employing density functional perturbation theory(DFPT) to calculate the inter-atomic forces=force constants of pristine/doped graphene. Thermal conductivity calculations have been carried out by making use of linearized Boltzmann transport equations (LBTE) under single-mode relaxation time approximation (RTA). The thermal conductivity of pristine graphene has been found to be of the order of 4000W/mK at 100K, which decreases gradually with an increase in temperature. The thermal conductivity decreases drastically by 96 % to 190 W/mK when doped with 12.5 % B and reduces by 99 % to 30 W/mK with 25 % B doping. When graphene is doped with N, the thermal conductivity decreases to 4 W/mK and 55 W/mK for 12.5 % and 25 % doping concentration, respectively. We have found that the thermal conductivity of doped graphene show less sensitivity to change in temperature. Magnetism in carbon nanostructures is of high scientific interest, which could lead to novel magnetic materials. The magnetic properties of symmetrical and asymmetrical sized small fullerene dimers have been investigated using spin polarized density functional theory. The interaction energies depict that small fullerene cages form stable dimer structures and symmetrical sized fullerene dimers are found more stable than asymmetrical sized dimers. The dimerization of fullerene cages in different modes leads to change in their magnetic properties. The non-magnetic fullerene cages become magnetic after formation of dimer (C20-C20, C24-C24, C32-C32, C40-C40, C20-C24, C40-C44 and C44-C50),whereas the magnetism of magnetic fullerenes is enhanced or lowered after dimerization (C28-C28 C36-C36, C24-C28, C28-C32, C32-C36 and C36-C40). The individual cages of dimer structures show ferromagnetic interactions amongst them and resultant magnetic moment strongly depends on the type of inter-connecting bonds. The magnetism may also be explained based on distortion of carbon cages and change in the density of states (DOS) in dimer configuration. The calculations presented show strong possibility of experimental synthesis of small fullerene based magnetic dimers.

The electronic and magnetic properties of carbon nanobuds have been investigated using density functional theory. The carbon nanobuds are formed by attaching smaller fullerenes (C20, C28, C36 and C40) of variable size with (5,5) ACNT and (5,0) ZCNT. Fullerenes interact strongly with CNT surface having binding energies within the range -0.93eV to -4.06eV. The C-C bond lengths near the attachment region increase from the original C-C bond lengths. The relative stabilities of the nanobuds are closely related to C-C bond lengths and bond angles in cycloaddition reaction. Nanobuds formed by bond cycloaddition are energetically most favorable amongst all cycloadditions. The electronic and magnetic properties of nanobuds depend strongly on electronic properties of its building blocks. The attachment of C20 and C40 on CNTs open up the HOMO-LUMO gaps of nanobuds whereas C28 and C36 results in addition of impurity states near the Fermi level. The total magnetic moment of nanobuds vary from 0.28{\mu}B to 4.00{\mu}B which depend on the nature of bonding between fullerene and CNTs. The results outline the potential of nanobuds as hybrid carbon nanostructures and how their properties can be tuned with the size and type of fullerene attached.

The effect of N as co-dopant have been investigated on magnetic properties of C and B-doped ( ZnO ) n clusters ( n = 1 − 16 ) using spin-polarized density functional theory. Total energy calculations show that C and N more stable when substituted at O site, whereas B is more stable at the Zn site. The B:N co-doping is energetically more stable than C:N which is more stable than N:N doping. C and N atoms do not show tendency to form clusters when doped separately. The magnetic moment (MM) of C-doped ZnO clusters is enhanced significantly with N co-doping. The MM of 2 μ B , 1 μ B and 1 μ B per atom is induced due to C, N and B respectively. The MM of 3 μ B or 5 μ B and 2 μ B or 4 μ B are observed for co-doping of 2C:N and C:2N respectively. In contrary, the MM in 2B:N and B:2N co-doped ( ZnO ) n remains 1 μ B for n =2−4, 12 and 16. The results are in agreement with the available theoretical results.

We have investigated the structural and electronic properties of carbon nanotube with small fullerene halves Cn (n ≤ 40) which are covalently bonded to the side wall of an armchair single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) using first principle method based on density functional theory. The fullerene size results in weak bonding between fullerene halves and carbon nanotube (CNT). Further, it was found that the C-C bond distance that attaches the fullerene half and CNT is of the order of 1.60 A. The calculated binding energies indicate the stability of the complexes formed. The HOMO-LUMO gaps and electron density of state plots points towards the metallicity of the complex formed. Our calculations on charge transfer reveal that very small amount of charge is transferred from CNT to fullerene halves.

First principle calculations based on density functional theory were performed to calculate the structural and electronic properties of C20-Nm@Cn dimer complexes. The calculated binding energies of the complexes formed are comparable to C60 dimer which ensures their stability. The bond lengths of these dimer complexes were found to be nearly same as pure complexes C20-Cn. Further, nitrogen (N) atoms were encapsulated inside the secondary cage (Cn) of dimer complexes and the number of N atoms depends on diameter of the cage. The HOMO-LUMO gaps of new proposed complexes indicate the increase in gap as compared to pure complexes. Mulliken charge analysis of these complexes has been studied which shows the significant charge transfer from the N atoms to the secondary cage of these complexes. The study propose the formation of the new dimer complexes which are stable and are able to encapsulate atoms which are otherwise reactive in free space.
