Abstract

•We aimed to develop and pilot test a novel behavioral intervention targeting morning inactivation, which is a common feature/potential promotor of depression, among older dementia caregivers.•The Scheduling Activity and Monitoring Mornings (SAMM) protocol was feasible and acceptable to dementia caregivers. After nine-weekly SAMM sessions, participants had substantial reductions in subjective morning activation deficits and depression symptoms.•Randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm that morning activation deficits are modifiable, and to ascertain any causal effects of doing so on related depression pathways.
