Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become essential components that power most current technologies, such as smartphones and electric vehicles, thus making various safety evaluations necessary to ensure their safe use. Among these evaluations, heating tests remain the most prominent source of safety issues. However, information on the phenomena occurring inside batteries during heating has remained inaccessible. In this study, we demonstrate the first in situ neutron imaging method to observe the internal structural deformation of LIBs during heating. We developed an airtight aluminium chamber specially designed to prevent radioactive contamination during in situ neutron imaging. We successfully observed the liquid electrolyte fluctuation inside a battery sample and the deformation of the protective plastic film upon heating up to thermal runaway. We report a newly designed compact cell to measure XAFS spectra with the conversion electron yield (CEY) method in the soft X-ray region under ambient-pressure gas conditions. Secondary electrons generated from the gas and sample by collision of X-ray-absorption-induced Auger electrons are collected by a positively biased collector electrode to obtain XAFS spectra. It was confirmed that this cell is applicable to soft X-ray surface XAFS measurements for different types of materials such as insulating organic materials and metal oxides under 1 bar gas conditions. During the measurements, photoinduced side effects were observed; i.e. photoinduced degradation of organic materials and photoinduced reduction/oxidation of metal oxides. We found that these photoinduced side effects can be sufficiently suppressed by controlling the measuring conditions. The presented measuring approach will enable surface XAFS spectra to be obtained in the soft X-ray region for various types of functional materials under ambient-pressure working conditions.

Neutron radiography is regarded as complementary to X-ray radiography in terms of transmittance through materials, but its spatial resolution is still insufficient. In order to achieve higher resolution in neutron imaging, several approaches have been adopted, such as optical magnification and event centroiding. In this paper, the authors focused on modification of the scintillator. A Gd 3 Al 2 Ga 3 O 12 :Ce single-crystal scintillator was applied to neutron radiography for the first time and a spatial resolution of 10.5 μm was achieved. The results indicate that this material can be a powerful candidate for a new neutron scintillator providing a resolution in micrometer order by optimizing the optical system and increasing the scintillator luminosity.

This study is the first report on liquid water and ice imaging conducted at a pulsed spallation neutron source facility. Neutron imaging can be utilised to visualise the water distribution inside polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Particularly, energy-resolved neutron imaging is a methodology capable of distinguishing between liquid water and ice, and is effective for investigating ice formation in PEFCs operating in a subfreezing environment. The distinction principle is based on the fact that the cross sections of liquid water and ice differ from each other at low neutron energies. In order to quantitatively observe transient freezing and thawing phenomena in a multiphase mixture (gas/liquid/solid) within real PEFCs with high spatial resolution, a pulsed neutron beam with both high intensity and wide energy range is most appropriate. In the validation study of the present work, we used water sealed in narrow capillary tubes to simulate the flow channels of a PEFC, and a pulsed neutron beam was applied to distinguish ice, liquid water and super-cooled water, and to clarify freezing and thawing phenomena of the water within the capillary tubes. Moreover, we have enabled the observation of liquid water/ice distributions in a large field of view (300 mm × 300 mm) by manufacturing a sub-zero environment chamber that can be cooled down to -30 °C, as a step towards in situ visualisation of full-size fuel cells.

Changes in the chemical states of the sulfonic groups of Nafion in a model polymer electrolyte fuel cell under an oxygen/hydrogen gas atmosphere were studied using sulfur K-edge XANES spectroscopy. First, the chemical state changes in the sulfonic acid groups of both cathode and anode electrodes due to humidity under oxygen/hydrogen gas flow were observed. Reversible spectral changes ascribed to the hydration and dehydration of the sulfonic acid group were observed at both electrodes. This result is similar to the experimental results obtained without introducing oxygen (helium/hydrogen). On the anode, some of the sulfonic acid groups were decomposed to atomic sulfur adsorbed on platinum (S ad ) and the amount increased with time. On the cathode, the formation of S ad was suppressed under the oxygen atmosphere. Next, the effects of oxygen gas introduction onto S ad were examined. S ad was at once formed on both electrodes under dry conditions without an oxygen supply. By supplying oxygen gas, S ad on the cathode disappears. Therefore, the catalyst of the cathode has the ability to recover against the poisoning S ad , while that on the anode accumulates., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

The study of CO oxidation on Pt(1 1 0) surface is revisited using ambient pressure x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. When the surface temperature reaches the activation temperature for CO oxidation under elevated pressure conditions, both the α-phase of PtO 2 oxide and chemisorbed oxygen are formed simultaneously on the surface. Due to the exothermic nature of CO oxidation, the temperature of the Pt surface increases as CO oxidation takes place. As the CO/O 2 ratio increases, the production of CO 2 increases continuously and the surface temperature also increases. Interestingly, within the diffusion limited regions, the amount of surface oxide changes little while the chemisorbed oxygen is reduced.

Changes in the chemical states of sulfonic groups of Nafion in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) under gas-flowing conditions were studied using in situ S-K XANES spectroscopy. The applied potential to the electrodes and the humidity of the cell were changed under flowing H 2 gas in the anode and He gas in the cathode. While the potential shows no significant effect on the S-K XANES spectra, the humidity is found to induce reversible changes in the spectra. Comparison of the spectral changes with simulations based on the density functional theory calculations indicates that the humidity influences the chemical state of the sulfonic group; under wet conditions the sulfonic group is in the form of a sulfonate ion. By drying treatment the sulfonate ion binds to hydrogen and becomes sulfonic acid. Furthermore, a small fraction of the sulfonic acid irreversibly decomposes to atomic sulfur. The peak energy of the atomic sulfur suggests that the generated atomic sulfur is adsorbed on the Pt catalyst surfaces.

Coronary subclavian vertebral steal syndrome (CSVSS) is a rare but important complication of coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) when an internal mammary artery (IMA) is used. This syndrome is defined as a retrograde flow from coronary artery via the IMA and the vertebral artery to the subclavian artery due to a proximal subclavian artery stenosis. We describe a case of a 64-year-old female who underwent CABG, complaining of dyspnea and chest pain by exercise of left arm, and dizziness when she turned her face to the left. Her blood pressure was 113/69 mmHg in the left arm and 137/84 mmHg in the right arm. Coronary angiography revealed retrograde flow from the left anterior descending (LAD) artery to the left IMA. Aortography showed that the ostium of the left subclavian artery had a severe stenosis and that the left vertebral artery was visualized retrogradely. Thereby, the diagnosis of CSVSS was made. The stenosis of the left subclavian artery was successfully treated with a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stent implantation, resulting in the restoration of antegrade flow from the left IMA to the LAD artery and from the left subclavian artery to the left vertebral artery. She was discharged with no chest pain and dizziness. < Learning objective: CSVSS is a rare but important complication of CABG. When patients who underwent CABG using IMA grafts complain of chest pain, arm claudication, or dizziness, physicians should suspect CSVSS. Proper physical examinations such as a difference in right and left blood pressure levels and a bruit of the subclavian area are needed.>.

Abnormal elevation of blood pressure in early morning (rest-to-active phase) is suggested to cause cardiovascular events. We investigated whether azilsartan (AZL), a novel potent angiotensin receptor blocker, suppresses blood pressure elevation from the light-rest to dark-active phase in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). AZL has a sustained depressor effect around the rest-to-active phase in SHRs to a greater extent than candesartan (CAN), despite their similar depressor effects for over 24 h. AZL did not cause sympathoexcitation. These results suggest that AZL has a more sustained depressor effect than CAN around the rest-to-active phase in SHRs, and might have advantages for early morning hypertension.

In metabolic syndrome (MetS), previous studies have suggested that cognitive decline is worsened. Among the factors associated with cognition, decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus causes cognitive decline. We previously reported that exercise training with calorie restriction yielded protection against cognitive decline via BDNF in the hippocampus of hypertensive rats. The aim of the present study was to determine whether or not calorie restriction results in protection against cognitive decline via BDNF and its receptor tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) in the hippocampus of MetS model rats. We divided dietary-induced obesity-prone and hypertensive rats (OP), as metabolic syndrome model rats, into three groups, fed with a high fat diet (HF), treated with calorie restriction (CR) plus vehicle, and treated with CR and ANA-12 (a TrkB antagonist) (CR+A). After treatment for 28 days, body weight, insulin, fasting blood glucose, adiponectin, systolic blood pressure, and oxidative stress in the hippocampus were significantly lower, and BDNF expression in the hippocampus was significantly higher in CR and CR+A than in HF. Cognitive performance determined by the Morris water maze test was significantly higher in CR than in HF, whereas the benefit was attenuated in CR+A. In conclusion, calorie restriction protects against cognitive decline via up-regulation of BDNF/TrkB through an antioxidant effect in the hippocampus of dietary-induced obesity rats.

Enhanced central sympathetic outflow worsens left ventricular (LV) remodeling and prognosis in heart failure after myocardial infarction (MI). Previous studies suggested that activation of brain angiotensin II type 1 receptors (AT₁R) in the brain stem leads to sympathoexcitation due to neuronal AT₁R upregulation. Recent studies, however, revealed the importance of astrocytes for modulating neuronal activity, but whether changes in astrocytes influence central sympathetic outflow in heart failure is unknown. In the normal state, AT₁R are only weakly expressed in astrocytes. We hypothesized that AT₁R in astrocytes are upregulated in heart failure and modulate the activity of adjacent neurons, leading to enhanced sympathetic outflow. In the present study, by targeting deletion of astrocyte-specific AT₁R, we investigated whether AT₁R in astrocytes have a key role in enhancing central sympathetic outflow, and thereby influencing LV remodeling process and the prognosis of MI-induced heart failure. Using the Cre-LoxP system, we generated glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-specific AT₁R knockout (GFAP/AT₁RKO) mice. Urinary norepinephrine excretion for 24 h, as an indicator of sympathoexcitation, was significantly lower in GFAP/AT₁RKO-MI mice than in control-MI mice. LV size and heart weight after MI were significantly smaller in GFAP/AT₁RKO mice than in control mice. Prognosis was significantly improved in GFAP/AT₁RKO-MI mice compared with control-MI mice. Our findings indicated that AT₁R expression was upregulated in brain stem astrocytes in MI-induced heart failure, which worsened LV remodeling and prognosis via sympathoexcitation. Exercise training normalizes sympathetic outflow in hypertension and chronic heart failure. The aim of this study was to determine whether the exercise training inhibits sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) via reduction of oxidative stress through blocked angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT(1)R) in rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). We divided stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) into SHRSP with exercised training (SHRSP-EX) and control (SHRSP-C). SNA and oxidative stress in the RVLM were significantly lower in SHRSP-EX than in SHRSP-C. These results suggest that exercise training inhibits SNA via reduction of oxidative stress through blocked AT(1)R in the RVLM of hypertension.
