Contexto: En la actualidad es necesario contar con cultivares de caña de azúcar con alto potencial agrícola e industrial a inicios de zafra que permita sustituir aquellos que con muchos años de explotación han disminuido su productividad y resistencia a las principales plagas y enfermedades que afectan al cultivo. Objetivo: Evaluar el potencial agroindustrial de tres nuevos clones promisorios de caña de azúcar en condiciones de secano. Métodos: Se utilizó un diseño experimental de bloques al azar con cinco tratamientos y tres réplicas. Los tratamientos fueron tres clones promisorios (C13-369, C13-370 y C13-383) y dos cultivares comerciales (C86-12 y C1051-73) utilizados como testigos. Se evaluaron características agrobotánicas y el rendimiento agrícola, así como indicadores de calidad de los jugos a inicios de zafra (diciembre) con 12 meses de edad el cultivo en la cepa de caña planta. Resultados: Los clones C13-383 y C13-370 superaron a los testigos al alcanzar rendimientos agrícolas superiores a las 195 t ha-1 de caña molible y 30 t Pol ha-1. El clon C13-369 mostró valores de rendimiento agrícola (164,48 t caña ha-1) e industrial (25,53 t Pol ha-1) similares al cultivar C86-12 y superiores al C1051-73. Conclusiones: Los tres clones promisorios poseen un alto potencial genético para la producción de azúcar y reafirma su posible utilización como cultivares de madurez temprana para ser cosechados a inicios de zafra.

Context: At present, high-potential agricultural and industrial sugarcane clones are critical at the beginning of the harvest to replace the cultivars that have reduced their productivity after years of exploitation and resistance to the major pests and diseases that attack the crop. Aim: To evaluate the agro-industrial potential of three new promising sugarcane clones in dryland. Methods: A randomized experimental block design with five treatments and three replicas was used. The treatments were three promising clones (C13-369, C13-370 and C13-383), and two commercial cultivars (C86-12 y C1051-73) used as controls. The agro-botanical characteristics and crop yields, along with the juice quality parameters at the beginning of the harvest (December), at 12 months of plant’s age. Results: Clones C13-383 and C13-370 demonstrated a better performance than the controls, reaching higher crop yields than 195 t ha-1 of millable sugarcane, and 30 t Pol ha-1. The crop yields of C13-369 (164.48 t sugarcane t ha-1) and industrial yields (25.53 t Pol ha-1) were similar to cultivar C86-12 and higher than C1051-73. Conclusions: The three promising clones have a high genetic potential for sugar production, confirming its possible use as early-maturation cultivars to be harvested at the beginning of production.

The results of 12 sugarcane cultivars evaluated against sugarcane orange rust disease on the plant strain in two planting cycles (spring and cold) are shown. The number of pustules and the length of the most frequent pustule on leaves +1, +3, +5 and +7 at three, four, five, six and seven months of age were evaluated in a 2 cm2 sampling station. The percentage of area occupied by pustules was calculated using a mathematical expression. Data were processed through the SPSS statistical package and analysis of variance and Tukey's test were performed for the sources of variation: leaves, evaluation dates, cultivars and cycles. The results showed differences for all sources of variation, leading to the conclusion that, although the affectations are not of great intensity, there are differences in the manifestation of symptoms in the different cultivars, and that studies to determine the presence of the disease and resistance of the genotypes should be carried out with cold plantings, also evaluating the +3 or +5 leaf when the crop is three and five months old.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue valorar el comportamiento de los indicadores de la composición química (materia seca, cenizas, proteína bruta, fósforo y potasio) de dos nuevos cultivares de caña de azúcar, según fracción de la planta y edad de rebrote. Se desarrollaron análisis químicos en diferentes fracciones de la planta (integral, cogollo y tallo) a diferentes edades de rebrote (6; 8 y 11 meses). Se utilizó como testigo el cultivar forrajero My5514. Se realizaron análisis de varianza multifactorial. Los resultados demostraron que los indicadores de la composición química cenizas, proteína bruta, fósforo y potasio en el cultivo de la caña de azúcar dependen de la edad de rebrote, del cultivar y de la fracción de la planta. Para el caso particular de la materia seca, este indicador depende de la edad de rebrote y de la fracción de la planta.

To develop a system that increase the precision in the resistance evaluations to sugarcane brown rust disease through the use of the quantitative sampling, six cultivars of differential behavior versus the disease (PR980, My5514, Ja60-5, C334-64, C323-68 and B4362) were studied. A random block experimental design with three replications was used in a heavy infections conditions obtained from the cultivar highly susceptible B4362. The evaluations were done at three and five months of age, in the three-thirds: bottom, half and top of the +1, +3 and +5 sugarcane plant leaves of 10 plants for replica. The variable total leaf area affected of the leaf and in each third was analyzed. In 2 cm2 were observed the long and wide of the biggest and more frequent pustule, the total of pustule and the area of the biggest and more frequent pustule, and the area percentage occupied by the most frequent pustule by each cm2 were determined. Variance analysis and Tukey tests as well as confidence intervals analysis to determine the coefficient to use as constant of the pustule width, due to the little variation of this parameter were realized. The +3 leaf represented the half infection of the incidence of the brown rust, constituting for it the most appropriate to carry out the observations and the half third. An equation was also obtained to calculate the area occupied by pustules with a high level of confidence.

With the purpose to analyze the behavior of a group of sugarcane cultivars in the presence of brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala Sydow and P. Sydow) in the area of the Territorial Sugarcane Research Station Oriental Center Camagüey, it was carried out an experiment with 11 sugarcane cultivars (C1051-73, C132-81, C266-70, C323-68, C86-12, C86-503, C86- 56, C88-380, C90-530, Co997, SP70-1284) and six patterns of well-known reaction PR980 (I grade), Ja64-11 (II grade), C334-64 (III grade), My5514 y Ja60-5 (IV grade) y B4362 (V grade). The evaluations were made at the plant and ratoon shoot at the ages of three, four, five, six and nine months in the leaves +1, +3 y +5. The evaluated parameters were: length and the number of pustules, size of the biggest pustule, and the occupied area by pustules. It was made an analysis of variance and Tukey’s test to find the differences between the cultivars. The statistical packet SPSS such as the main additive and multiplicative interactions (AMMI Models) were used. There are differences in every analyzed factors (cultivar, leaf and evaluation moment) and in the analyzed variables (TPM and occupied area by pustule). The resistance patterns kept the expected behavior and the biggest cultivars percentage behaved like resistant.

In vitro digestibility of two new sugar cane cultivars for animal forage was determined. Three runs were made using gas from cattle feces as inoculum. The plant's integral fraction was studied at 6, 8, and 11 months of re-shoot. Forage cultivar My5514 was used as witness. The Ørskov and McDonald´s model (1979), transformed by Correa (2004), was used to determine the parameters. Simple variance analyses were carried out, and the differences between the means for P < 0.05, were determined by Tukey. The results showed that the two new cultivars produced similar in vitro gas volumes, and even higher (8 and 11 months of age) than the My5514 forage cultivar. At 8 months, the new cultivars had the best in vitro gas production values. The values achieved for the in vitro gas production, speed (0.011 h -1-0.033h -1), and gas production potential (32.7 ml-52.1 ml), were high. Moreover, the lag had low values (2.10 h-4.57 h).

Tomando como base experimental dos ensayos de campo ubicados en la Estación Territorial de Investigaciones de la Caña de Azúcar de Camagüey, se realizaron a través de muestreos periódicos las determinaciones del área foliar específica en las variedades de caña de azúcar: C1051-73, My5514 y C86-12, en edades que oscilaron según la fecha de plantación entre los 279 y los 480 días. El cultivar C1051-73 presentó los más bajos niveles del área foliar específica, lo que se corresponde con hojas de mayor espesor relativo o densidad. Los niveles del área foliar específica en cada cultivar no difiere en cada ciclo de plantación. En primavera se observan diferencias estadísticas entre una edad y la siguiente en el período que va desde 300 y hasta 421 días. En frío las cifras resultan más homogéneas, con diferencias medibles entre edades de 279 a 300 días y entre 367 y 394 días. El contrate simultáneo entre cultivares y edades muestra de modo regular pocas diferencias biométricas.

RESUMEN El objetivo principal del estudio fue evaluar la producción de biomasa seca, en tallos y hojas de caña de azúcar, a través de diferentes edades de corte y ciclos de plantación. En la región Centro-Oriental de Cuba (Estación Experimental de Investigaciones de Caña de Azúcar de Camagüey-INICA) se valoraron durante tres años en los ciclos de primavera y frío en dos ensayos de campo con los cultivares: C1051-73, My5514 y C86-12. La biomasa seca se evaluó en caña planta por un período de 11 meses. Los experimentos se sembraron en un diseño de bloques al azar con tres réplicas. En el análisis de la información se utilizó un ANOVA paramétrico (factorial) y prueba de Tukey. Los resultados en la comparación de medias mostraron que el peso seco de los tallos se incrementó desde 278 (9.3 meses) hasta 465 días (15.5 meses). Los máximos valores se obtuvieron en el ciclo de frío, entre 371(12,4 meses) y 489 días (16,3 meses). En frío los contenidos de materia seca de las hojas fueron significativamente superiores (p≤ 0.01) a los de primavera a edades que van desde los 278 (9.3 meses) y hasta los 403 días (13.4 meses). Los resultados son promisorios y el contenido de materia seca un indicador de utilidad en investigaciones para la mejor comprensión del crecimiento y productividad de la caña de azúcar en las condiciones propias de Cuba. Production of dry weight in stalks and leaves of sugarcane, through different crop ages and two plantation cycles. ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was to evaluate the production of dry weight (biomass), in stalks and leaves of sugarcane, through different crop ages, and two plantation cycles. Two field trials in spring and winter were conducted during three years in the center-east region of Cuba (Experimental Station of Sugarcane Research, Camagüey - INICA), with the varieties: C1051-73, My5514 and C86-12. Dry biomass was evaluated over period of 11 months in the plant-cane cycle. The experiments were planted in a randomized block design with three replications. Results were analyzed using the parametric ANOVA model (factorial experiment) and the Tukey's test. The results of means comparisons showed that the stalks dry weight increased from 278 (9.3 months) to 465 days (15.5 months). Highest stalks weights in cold season occurred from 371(12.4 months) to 489 days (16.3 months). The contents of the leaves dry matter in cold season were significantly higher (p≤0.01) than spring from 278 (9.3 months) to 403 days (13.4 months). These results are promising and dry matter content has potential for being used in researches for a better understanding sugarcane growth and yield under Cuba conditions.

Con el objetivo de conocer la situación actual con respecto al uso de la caña de azúcar como alimento animal en el municipio Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, provincia Camagüey se realizó un total de 41 encuestas para comprobar el empleo y forma en que se suministra e identificar las principales causas de su no utilización, así como valorar el comportamiento de algunos indicadores productivos de la masa bovina con y sin el empleo de esta fuente forrajera. Los datos obtenidos se procesaron mediante el programa estadístico STATGRAPHICS Centurion XV. I, se realizaron distribuciones de frecuencia y pruebas no paramétricas (Mann- Whitney P < 0,05). Los resultados de las encuestas permitieron comprobar que en ocho unidades, que representaron el 19,51 % del total de encuestadas, se suministra la caña de azúcar para la alimentación animal y se hace un uso correcto de la misma en solo tres de ellas (37,5 %). Las principales causas detectadas por las cuales no se emplea caña de azúcar como alimento animal, se fundamentaron en la falta de capacitación a los productores y la no disponibilidad de semilla de variedades recomendadas para dicho fin. Se demostró que esta fuente de forraje tuvo una influencia positiva en el incremento de la producción de leche y en la reducción de la edad promedio al sacrificio.
