Abstract Aims Frailty and dependence are frequent in patients admitted for acute heart failure (AHF), but their prognostic significance is unknown, especially in young adults. We aimed to study in adults admitted for AHF, regardless of age, the effect of frailty and dependence on the incidence of mortality and a combined event of mortality, readmissions for AHF, and visits to the emergency room (ER) for AHF at 1 and 6 months. Methods and results We designed a prospective cohort study by including all the patients with AHF admitted in our Cardiology Department from July 2020 through May 2021. A multidimensional geriatric assessment was performed during the admission. We clinically followed up the patients 6 months after discharge. We enrolled 202 patients. The mean age was 73 ± 12.32 years, and 100 (49.5%) of the patients were elderly (>75 years). Just 78 patients (38.6%) were women, and 100 (49.5%) had previous HF. ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the effect of bronchodilator on the respiratory mechanics and pulmonary function of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis. Methods: Cross-sectional study on clinically stable children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis aged from six to 15 years. Participants underwent impulse oscillometry and spirometry evaluations before and 15 minutes after bronchodilator inhalation. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied to verify the sample distribution, and the Student's t-test and Wilcoxon test were used to compare the data before and after bronchodilator inhalation. Results: The study included 54 individuals with a mean age of 9.7±2.8 years. The analysis showed a statistically significant improvement in impulse oscillometry and spirometry parameters after bronchodilator inhalation. However, according to the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS) recommendations (2020 and 2021), this improvement was not sufficient to classify it as a bronchodilator response. Conclusions: The use of bronchodilator medication improved respiratory mechanics and pulmonary function parameters of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis; however, most patients did not show bronchodilator response according to ATS/ERS recommendations.

IntroductionHealth literacy is crucial to adherence to medical interventions in therapeutics, prevention, and diagnosis. The basis for literacy is knowledge. To accomplish the goals for the elimination of cervical cancer, one of the most prevalent and preventable cancers, we must understand the determinants of non-adherence and address them specifically to ensure patients’ active participation.AimTo determine women’s knowledge regarding the manifestations of cervical cancer and its prevention.Materials and methodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study in an urban population from northern Portugal. Women aged 18 to 30 years were randomly assigned to answer the Cervical Cancer Awareness Measure questionnaire, including questions of knowledge about the causes and symptoms of cervical cancer, prospecting for individual and social-related determinants.ResultsThe total number of participants was 270, with a mean age of 24.7 years. Knowledge about symptoms scored 5.4 ± 2.6, with a maximum of 12 points, and knowledge about the causes scored 5.7 ± 1.9, with a maximum of 11 points. The correlation between both was 0.334. High education, high socio-economic status, self-perception of one’s capacity to recognize symptoms, and knowledge about the HPV vaccine were associated with better knowledge.DiscussionPortuguese women present low knowledge about cervical cancer, potentially affecting their health through exposure to risk situations and non-adherence to routine screening.

Background and purpose: The employment of yeasts for biomedical purposes has become increasingly frequent for the delivery of prophylactic and therapeutic products. Its structural components, such as β-glucans, mannan, and chitin, can be explored as immunostimulators that show safety and low toxicity. Besides, this system minimizes antigen degradation after administration, facilitating the delivery to the target cells. Review approach: This review sought to present molecules derived from yeast, called yeast shells (YS), and their applications as carrier vehicles for drugs, proteins, and nucleic acids for immunotherapy purposes. Furthermore, due to the diversity of information regarding the production and immunostimulation of these compounds, a survey of the protocols and immune response profiles generated was presented. Key results: The use of YS has allowed the development of strategies that combine efficiency and effectiveness in antigen delivery. The capsular structure can be recognized and phagocytized by dendritic cells and macrophages. In addition, the combination with different molecules, such as nanoparticles or even additional adjuvants, improves the cargo loading, enhancing the system. Activation by specific immune pathways can also be achieved by different administration routes. Conclusion: Yeast derivatives combined in different ways can increase immunostimulation, enhancing the delivery of medicines and vaccine antigens. These aspects, combined with the simplicity of the production steps, make these strategies more accessible to be applied in the prevention and treatment of various diseases.

Abstract Background The association between fetal growth restriction (FGR) and childhood neurodevelopmental delay is unclear and the evidence available to the present date shows conflicting results. Our aim was to analyse the impact of early-onset FGR on the neurodevelopmental outcome at 24 months of corrected age in very preterm infants. Methods Retrospective cohort study of very preterm infants (≤ 32 weeks’ gestation) admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit between 1 January 2013–31 December 2019. The control group comprised appropriate for gestational age (AGA) newborns. Griffiths III Mental Development Scale was performed at 24 months of corrected age. Results 132 infants were included: 44 FGR and 88 AGA. Mean Global Development Quotient (GDQ) was lower for FGR infants (p = 0.004) even after adjusting for maternal and perinatal factors (βadjusted -16.703; p = 0.009). The average scores for the neurodevelopmental domains were highest for personal-social-emotional skills (107.02 ± 16.34), followed by eye/hand coordination (105.61 ± 14.20) and foundation of learning skills (102.23 ± 13.74) and were lowest for gross motor (97.90 ± 11.88) and language/communication skills (96.39 ± 18.88). FGR had a significant negative impact on all domains except for gross motor skills. After adjustment, FGR continued to have a significant adverse impact on language/communication (βadjusted -21.924; p = 0.013), eye/hand coordination (βadjusted -15.446; p = 0.015) and foundation of learning skills (βadjusted -15.211; p = 0.013). Conclusions In very preterm infants, FGR was associated with a significantly increased risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcome at 24 months of corrected age compared to age-matched AGA infants.

The fruit juice industry generates a significant amount of waste, with a strong impact on the environment and the economy. Therefore, researchers have been focusing on the characterization of resources considered as food waste. This work provides information about the lipophilic and polar metabolites of pear pomace flours (PPFs) as a tool that can shed more light on the bioactive potential of this residue. Using UPLC-PDA, UPLC-FLR, and GC-MS, the study identified and quantified PPF’s polar and non-polar metabolites. Essential, conditional, and non-essential amino acids were found, with asparagine being the most abundant. Isoprenoids, including lutein, zeaxanthin, and carotene isomers, ranged from 10.8 to 22.9 mg/100 g dw. Total flavonoids and phenolic compounds were 520.5–636.4 mg/100 g dw and 536.9–660.1 mg/100 g dw, respectively. Tocotrienols and tocopherols were identified, with concentrations of 173.1–347.0 mg/100 g dw and 468.7–913.4 mg/100 g dw. Fatty acids were the major non-polar compounds. All fractions significantly reduced matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity. Although PPF had lower antioxidant potential (3–6 mmol Trolox/100 g dw), it inhibited AChE and BuChE by 23–30% compared to physostigmine salicylate. These findings suggest that pear pomace waste can be repurposed into functional products with valuable bioactive properties by re-introducing it in the food chain.

Abstract Background Understanding the variation between well and poorly adapted cattle breeds to local environments and pathogens is essential for breeding cattle with improved climate and disease-resistant phenotypes. Although considerable progress has been made towards identifying genetic differences between breeds, variation at the epigenetic and chromatin levels remains poorly characterized. Here, we generate, sequence and analyse over 150 libraries at base-pair resolution to explore the dynamics of DNA methylation and chromatin accessibility of the bovine immune system across three distinct cattle lineages. Results We find extensive epigenetic divergence between the taurine and indicine cattle breeds across immune cell types, which is linked to the levels of local DNA sequence divergence between the two cattle sub-species. The unique cell type profiles enable the deconvolution of complex cellular mixtures using digital cytometry approaches. Finally, we show distinct sub-categories of CpG islands based on their chromatin and methylation profiles that discriminate between classes of distal and gene proximal islands linked to discrete transcriptional states. Conclusions Our study provides a comprehensive resource of DNA methylation, chromatin accessibility and RNA expression profiles of three diverse cattle populations. The findings have important implications, from understanding how genetic editing across breeds, and consequently regulatory backgrounds, may have distinct impacts to designing effective cattle epigenome-wide association studies in non-European breeds.

Introdução: A nutrição é uma área de intervenção na prevenção e gestão da diabetes mellitus; por isso, é fulcral promover a capacitação da população para a adoção de hábitos alimentares saudáveis. Ainda que existam alguns estudos nesta área, não se conhecem os principais erros nos hábitos alimentares das pessoas com diabetes em Portugal. Os objetivos deste estudo foram identificar os principais erros nos hábitos alimentares das pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 em Portugal e avaliar a sua relação com variáveis sociodemográficas. Métodos: Estudo transversal multicêntrico, em amostra de conveniência de pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 seguidas em Unidades de Cuidados de Saúde Primários. Aplicação do UK Diabetes and Diet Questionnaire (UKDDQ) – traduzido e adaptado, de julho a outubro de 2022. Análise estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: Amostra de 550 participantes, 52,2% do sexo feminino, 68,3% com 65 anos ou mais, 55,8% com nível de escolaridade igual ou inferior ao 1.º ciclo do ensino básico, 24,7% com insuficiência económica e tempo desde o diagnóstico médio de 10,60 ± 8,13 anos. Apenas 36,2% da amostra obteve um score UKDDQ considerado saudável. Menos de 50% obteve scores saudáveis para os itens “arroz ou massa ricos em fibras”, “pão integral”, “manteiga, margarina e óleos vegetais” e “vegetais e leguminosas”. Somente 8,9% da amostra obteve score saudável para o consumo de fibras. Cerca de 70,4% obteve score saudável para o consumo de açúcares livres e 54,7% para o consumo de ácidos gordos saturados. Verificou-se a existência de uma correlação com significado estatístico positiva fraca entre o score UKDDQ e a idade (ρ = 0,201, p < 0,001), com escolha mais frequente de alimentos saudáveis com o aumentar da idade. As pessoas do sexo feminino reportaram hábitos alimentares mais saudáveis, particularmente no consumo de fibras e ácidos gordos saturados. Conclusão: A maior parte da nossa amostra não usufruiu do potencial efeito positivo de uma alimentação saudável. Individualizam-se grupos de alimentos cujos consumos devem ser enfatizados ou desencorajados, particularmente, a necessidade de incentivar o consumo de alimentos ricos em fibra. Ações educacionais dirigidas devem ter especial foco em pessoas mais jovens e/ou do sexo masculino.

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare and analyze pulmonary function and respiratory mechanics parameters between healthy children and children with cystic fibrosis. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study included healthy children (HSG) and children with cystic fibrosis (CFG), aged 6–13 years, from teaching institutions and a reference center for cystic fibrosis in Florianópolis/SC, Brazil. The patients were paired by age and sex. Initially, an anthropometric evaluation was undertaken to pair the sample characteristics in both groups; the medical records of CFG were consulted for bacterial colonization, genotype, and disease severity (Schwachman-Doershuk Score — SDS) data. Spirometry and impulse oscillometry were used to assess pulmonary function. Results: In total, 110 children were included, 55 in each group. In the CFG group, 58.2% were classified as excellent by SDS, 49.1% showed the ΔF508 heterozygotic genotype, and 67.3% were colonized by some pathogens. IntroductionThe production of resting cysts is a key dispersal and survival strategy of many dinoflagellate species. However, little is known about the role of suspended cysts in the benthic nepheloid layer (BNL) in the initiation and decline of planktonic populations.MethodsIn September 2019, sampling of the dinoflagellate cyst community at different water depths in the water column and in the bottom sediments, and studies of spatio-temporal changes in physical properties (temperature, salinity, density and suspended sediment concentration), were carried out along a land-sea transect off Figueira da Foz (NW Portugal) to investigate the dinoflagellate cyst distribution and the factors (physical and biological) affecting it. A clustering analysis was used to compare the BNL and sediment cyst records with the cyst rain recorded by a sediment trap at a fixed station. Furthermore, Lagrangian particle experiments enabled simulating cyst trajectories in the BNL 5 and 10 days before sampling and assessing cross-shore, vertical and alongshore transport within the studied region.ResultsA well-developed BNL was present during the survey, which covered a change from active (14th of September) to relaxed (19th of September) upwelling conditions. Organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts were dominant in all samples, although calcareous dinoflagellate cysts consistently occurred (at low abundances). High proportions of full cysts were observed in the BNL, of which a significant portion was viable as shown by excystment experiments. Moreover, BNL cyst records collected on the 19th of September along the land-sea transect were similar to the sediment trap cyst record but greatly differed from sediment cyst records. The heterotrophic small spiny brown cysts (SBC) and cysts of the autotrophic yessotoxin-producer Protoceratium reticulatum notably increased during the survey, in the BNL and in the water column above.DiscussionThe comparison of the BNL, surface sediment and sediment trap cyst records supported that the main origin of cysts in the BNL was the recent production in the water column. The spatial coincidences in the distribution of cysts and vegetative cells of Protoceratium reticulatum also supported that full cysts in the water column were being produced in surface waters. New data evidenced the presence of a significant reservoir of viable cysts in the BNL that have the potential to seed new planktonic blooms. Furthermore, back-track particle modelling evidenced that alongshore advection was the main physical mechanism controlling cyst dynamics in the BNL during most part of the survey period, being particularly intense in coastal stations (

The usual lives have been changed since the COVID-19 Outbreak took place. Elderly people suffer as much as others and their lives have been impacted a lot. This paper aims to analyze the social network use and the recreation and socialization activity participation before and after the COVID-19 pandemical appearance in long-term care institutions. In the empirical side of this research, the authors of this paper sent an email questionnaire to long-term care institutions located in Rio de Janeiro city, Brazil. In the theoretical side of this research, an investigation was carried out through the scientific databases. Data were analyzed using the programming languages Python, Excel, and IBM SPSS Statistics. As a result, this paper shows an apparent increase in social network use and a drop in recreation and socialization activity participation after the COVID-19 pandemical appearance in long-term care institutions. The presented findings are the first step, which can be part of future studies analyzing the potential growth in social network use among elderly people by comparing elderly residents with non-residents in the long-term care institutions.

Peer review supports the integrity and quality of scientific publishing. However, although it is a fundamental part of the publishing process, peer review can also be challenging for reviewers, editors, and other stakeholders. The present study aims to explore the nurses’ motivations, barriers, and facilitators in engaging in a peer review process. This qualitative, descriptive exploratory study will be developed in partnerships with three research centers. Researchers followed the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist to ensure the quality of this study protocol. According to the selection criteria, the purposive sampling will be used to recruit nurse researchers that act as peer reviewers for several scientific journals in various fields of knowledge. Interviews will be conducted until data have been sufficiently consistent with meeting the initial objectives. Researchers will develop a guide comprising a set of open-ended questions to collect participants’ characteristics, descriptive review behavior, and perceptions regarding their motivations, barriers, and facilitators. Researchers will analyze data using an inductive process of content analysis with the help of the QDA Miner Lite database. Findings from this study will generate knowledge that may help stakeholders identify facilitating factors and barriers and guide the development of strategies to remove or minimize these barriers.

The improvement of sustainable chemical processes plays a pivotal role in safe environmental and societal development, for example, by reducing the use of hazardous substances, preventing chemical waste, and improving the efficiency of chemical reactions to obtain added-value compounds. In this context, the porous coordination polymer MOF-808 (MOF, metal–organic framework) was prepared by a straightforward method in water, at room temperature, and was unequivocally characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. MOF-808 material was applied for the first time as catalysts in ring-opening aminolysis reactions of epoxides. It demonstrated high activity and selectivity for reactions of styrene oxide and cyclohexene oxide with aniline, using a very low amount of an eco-sustainable solvent (0.5 mL of EtOH), at 70 °C. Moreover, MOF-808 demonstrated high stability in the catalytic reaction conditions applied, and a notable reuse capacity of up to 20 consecutive reaction cycles, without significant variation in its catalytic performance. In fact, this Zr-based porous coordination polymer prepared by environment-friendly conditions proved to be a novel efficient heterogeneous catalyst, promoting the ring-opening reaction of epoxides under more sustainable conditions, and using a very low amount of catalyst.

Milk is renowned for its nutritional richness but also serves as a remarkable reservoir of bioactive compounds, particularly milk proteins and their derived peptides. Recent studies have showcased several robust antiviral activities of these proteins, evidencing promising potential within zoonotic viral diseases. While several publications focus on milk’s bioactivities, antiviral peptides remain largely neglected in reviews. This knowledge is critical for identifying novel research directions and analyzing potential nutraceuticals within the One Health context. Our review aims to gather the existing scientific information on milk-derived antiviral proteins and peptides against several zoonotic viral diseases, and their possible mechanisms. Overall, in-depth research has increasingly revealed them as a promising and novel strategy against viruses, principally for those constituting a plausible pandemic threat. The underlying mechanisms of the bioactivity of milk’s proteins include inhibiting viral entry and attachment to the host cells, blocking replication, or even viral inactivation via peptide–membrane interactions. Their marked versatility and effectiveness stand out compared to other antiviral peptides and can support future research and development in the post-COVID-19 era. Overall, our review helps to emphasize the importance of potentially effective milk-derived peptides, and their significance for veterinary and human medicines, along with the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and dairy industry.

Regardless of the benefits of fall prevention programs, people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) will still fall. Therefore, it is crucial to explore novel therapeutic approaches that are well-accepted and effective for addressing fall risk and the fear of falls among this population. The present study aims to assess the feasibility of the Landing Wise program as a therapeutic intervention for reducing the fear of falling in people with PD. A mixed-methods study will be conducted using convenience sampling to recruit 20 people with PD with a moderate concern of falling from a Parkinson’s Patients Association. In addition to usual care, participants will attend 2 days per week, 90 min group sessions for 8 weeks. The intervention combines group cognitive behavioral intervention with the training of safe landing strategies. Feasibility will be assessed by six key domains (recruitment strategy and rates, enrollment, retention, acceptability, reasons for decline/withdrawal, and adverse events). Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to characterize the sample, followed by inferential statistics to evaluate differences in the Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International Scale, Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale, Timed Up Go, 6-Minutes Walking Distance, and fall frequency and severity scores between baseline and final assessment. Qualitative data will be analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis process. There is a growing interest in developing new effective therapeutic approaches for people with PD. If proven program feasibility, this study precedes a randomized controlled trial to establish the effectiveness of the Landing Wise program.

Introdução: A gameterapia (GT) tem sido utilizada como método para estimular a prática de atividade física em indivíduos com fibrose cística (FC), podendo proporcionar melhora no sistema cardiorrespiratório e na adesão ao tratamento. Objetivo: analisar as repercussões clínicas da gameterapia no manejo de pacientes com FC. Métodos: Conduziu-se uma revisão sistemática de literatura nas seguintes bases de dados: PubMed, Embase, Scopus e MEDLINE via Ovid, utilizando-se os descritores:“Cystic fibrosis”,“video games” e seus cognatos, por meio da qual se incluíram estudos que descrevessem as repercussões do uso da GT em indivíduos com FC. Resultados: Foram identificados 293 estudos, sendo 7 selecionados ao final. Em 6 estudos, a frequência cardíaca alcançada durante a GT apresentou se dentro dos padrões recomendados para treinamento. A avaliação do consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2máx) foi realizada em 3 publicações, e este parâmetro apresentou níveis mais elevados em comparação ao identificado no teste de caminhada de seis minutos. Os consoles mais utilizados foram Nintendo Wii TM e Xbox 360 ™ e a intensidade na realização dos exercícios com a GT esteve entre moderada e intensa. A adesão dos indivíduos quanto a esse recurso também foi verificada, e a GT apresentou-se mais aceitável que outros e foi considerada lúdica. Conclusão: a GT se mostra uma intervenção capaz de gerar respostas fisiológicas que correspondem às necessidades de treinamento, além de maior adesão e satisfação dos indivíduos com FC em sua realização.

Chronotype and Time of Day (ToD) can modulate several aspects of cognitive performance. However, there is limited evidence about the effect of these variables on face recognition performance, so the aim of the present study is to investigate this influence. For this, 274 participants (82.5% females; age 18-49 years old, mean = 27.2, SD = 1.82) were shown 20 short videoclips, each gradually morphing from a general identity unfamiliar face to a famous face. Participants should press the spacebar to stop each video as soon as they could identify the famous face, and then provide the name or an unequivocal description of the person. Analysis of response times (RT) showed that evening-types recognised the faces faster than morning-types. Considering different ToD windows, the effect of chronotype was only significant in the 13h-17h and in the 21h-6h time-windows. Altogether, results suggest an advantage of evening-types on famous face recognition using dynamic stimuli with morning-types, being particularly slower during their non-optimal period.

Kinematically persistent planes (KPPs) of satellites are fixed sets of satellites co-orbiting around their host galaxy, whose orbital poles are conserved and clustered across long cosmic time intervals. They play the role of “skeletons,” ensuring the long-term durability of positional planes. We explore the physical processes behind their formation in terms of the dynamics of the local cosmic web (CW), characterized via the so-called Lagrangian volumes (LVs) built up around two zoom-in, cosmological hydro-simulations of Milky Way–mass disk galaxy + satellites systems, where three KPPs have been identified. By analyzing the LV deformations in terms of the reduced tensor of inertia (TOI), we find an outstanding alignment between the LV principal directions and the KPP satellites’ orbital poles. The most compressive local mass flows (along the ${\hat{e}}_{3}$ eigenvector) are strong at early times, feeding the so-called ${\hat{e}}_{3}$ -structure, while the smallest TOI axis rapidly decreases. The ${\hat{e}}_{3}$ -structure collapse marks the end of this regime and is the timescale for the establishment of satellite orbital pole clustering when the Universe is ≲4 Gyr old. KPP protosatellites aligned with ${\hat{e}}_{3}$ are those whose orbital poles are either aligned from early times or have been successfully bent at ${\hat{e}}_{3}$ -structure collapse. KPP satellites associated with ${\hat{e}}_{1}$ tend to have early trajectories already parallel to ${\hat{e}}_{3}$ . We show that KPPs can arise as a result of the ΛCDM-predicted large-scale dynamics acting on particular sets of protosatellites, the same dynamics that shape the local CW environment.

While food markets and food production chains are experiencing exponential growth, global attention to food safety is steadily increasing. This is particularly crucial for ready-to-eat products such as fresh-cut salads and fruits, as these items are consumed raw without prior heat treatment, making the presence of pathogenic microorganisms quite frequent. Moreover, many studies on foodborne illnesses associated with these foods often overlook the transmission links from the initial contamination source. The prevention and control of the dissemination of foodborne pathogens should be approached holistically, involving agricultural production, processing, transport, food production, and extending to final consumption, all while adopting a One Health perspective. In this context, our objective is to compile available information on the challenges related to microbiological contamination in minimally handled fruits and vegetables. This includes major reported outbreaks, specific bacterial strains, and associated statistics throughout the production chain. We address the sources of contamination at each stage, along with issues related to food manipulation and disinfection. Additionally, we provide potential solutions to promote a healthier approach to fresh-cut fruits and vegetables. This information will be valuable for both researchers and food producers, particularly those focused on ensuring food safety and quality.

The main goal of this research was to investigate how particle size influences the characteristics of pear (Pyrus Communis L.) pomace flour and to examine the impact of different pre-treatment methods on the phenolic content and associated bioactivities. Pear pomace flour was fractionated into different particle sizes, namely 1 mm, 710 µm, 180 µm, 75 µm and 53 µm. Then two extraction methods, namely maceration with methanol and two-step extraction with hexane via Soxhlet followed by ultrasound extraction with methanol, were tested. Total phenolic and total flavonoid contents ranged from 375.0 to 512.9 mg gallic acid/100 g DW and from 24.7 to 34.6 mg quercetin/100 g DW, respectively. Two-step extraction provided antioxidant activity up to 418.8 (in FRAP assay) and 340.0 mg Trolox/100 g DW (in DPPH assay). In order to explore various bioactive properties, this study assessed the inhibitory effects of enzymes, specifically α-amylase and β-glucosidase (associated with antidiabetic effects), as well as angiotensin-converting enzyme (linked to potential antihypertensive benefits). Additionally, the research investigated antibacterial potential against both Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria, revealing significant results (p < 0.05), particularly in the case of the two-step extraction method. This investigation underscores the substantial value of certain food industry wastes, highlighting their potential as bioactive ingredients within the framework of a circular economy.

Enquadramento: As práticas clínicas simuladas, designadas por experiências clínicas simuladas ou simulação, são um processo formativo dinâmico e desafiador que decorre em ambiente controlado com recurso a cenários que recriam a realidade clínica. Objetivo: Estudar a satisfação dos estudantes de enfermagem com as práticas clínicas simuladas. Metodologia: Estudo descritivo-correlacional de abordagem quantitativa, com uma amostra de 223 estudantes de enfermagem. Aplicada a Escala de Satisfação com as Experiências Clínicas Simuladas (ESECS), constituída pelas dimensões: prática, cognitiva e realismo. Resultados: A satisfação média global com as práticas clínicas simuladas, foi de 7,501 na escala de 1–10. As características sociodemográficas, ano curricular e conteúdos, não foram preditivos da satisfação. Os estudantes apresentam-se em média mais satisfeitos na dimensão cognitiva e menos satisfeitos na dimensão realismo. Conclusão: Os estudantes apresentam-se satisfeitos com as práticas clínicas simuladas percecionando a sua importância para a aprendizagem, na aquisição de competências e maior capacidade de resposta no ensino clínico em contexto real. Tal reforça a pertinência do investimento, teórico, científico e prático, nesta estratégia de ensino.

Introdução: intervenções musicais, como canto coral, têm caráter artístico e são capazes de promover benefícios psicológicos e fisiológicos. Não há estudos na literatura sobre a repercussão do canto coral em parâmetros do sistema respiratório de escolares cantores, em comparação aos não cantores. Objetivo: comparar parâmetros do sistema respiratório entre crianças e adolescentes cantores de coral e não cantores. Método: estudo observacional transversal quantitativo incluiu escolares de 7 a 14 anos, constituindo o grupo intervenção alunos de canto coral (GCC) pareados com escolares não cantores (GNC) como controles. Realizou-se avaliação antropométrica, seguida de espirometria e manovacuometria, segundo recomendações da American Thoracic Society. Para comparação entre os grupos considerou-se os valores espirométricos absolutos e valores preditos, assim como para força de musculatura respiratória. Aplicou-se teste de Shapiro-Wilk e conduziu-se os testes U de Mann-Witney e Teste-T independente, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: participaram 40 crianças (95% meninas), 20 em cada grupo, com idade média de 11,25±1,80 anos no GNC e 11,20±1,64 anos no GCC. Volume expiratório forçado no primeiro segundo em porcentagem do predito (VEF1%) se apresentou maior no GNC (98,58±12,62%), em comparação ao GCC (87,10±8,84%) (p=0,001), por sua vez, GCC apresentou maior valor absoluto de pico de fluxo expiratório (PFE) (GNC:4,21±0,99l/s x GCC: 4,95±1,29l/s; p=0,048). Conclusão: os escolares cantores de canto coral não apresentaram melhores parâmetros de função pulmonar e FMR, em comparação aos não cantores.

This paper described the functionalities of a simple robot adopted in the classroom to promote computational thinking (CT) in the context of the project PeCOT—computational thinking with tangible objects. This robot, similar to some commercial educational robots, was developed to be used in primary education classroom contexts (second, third, and fourth grades) by children between 8 and 10 years old. PeCOT is a pedagogical intervention project and research project that will run over the next 2 years. The aim of this paper is to present the robot, how it works, and some activities that can be implemented in the educational context to promote CT skills, including learning in different subject areas, such as mathematics or natural science. Thus, we begin by presenting a general description of the robot. Next, we identify activities and formalize the programming steps for each of the activities. Finally, we discuss the potential that the robot and the proposed activities may have to promote the development of CT skills.

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare impulse oscillometry parameters between healthy children and adolescents with symptoms of rhinitis and those without. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analytical study of healthy individuals 7-14 years of age. Health status was determined through the use of questionnaires. We performed anthropometric measurements, impulse oscillometry, and spirometry. Results: The sample comprised 62 students, with a mean age of 9.58 ± 2.08 years and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 17.96 ± 3.10 kg/m2. The students were divided into two groups: those with symptoms of rhinitis (n = 29) and those without such symptoms (n = 33). The oscillometry results and anthropometric parameters were normal in both groups and did not differ significantly between the two. The variables age, height, and body mass, respectively, correlated negatively and moderately with most of the following parameters: total airway resistance (r = −0.529, r = −0.548, and r = −0.433); central airway resistance (r = −0.441, r = −0.468, and r = −0.439); respiratory impedance (r = −0.549, r = −0.567, and r = −0.455); reactance at 5 Hz (r = 0.506, r = −0.525, and r = −0.414); reactance area (r = −0.459, r = −0.471, and r = −0.358); and resonance frequency (r = −0.353, r = −0.371, and r = −0.293). We found that BMI did not correlate significantly with any of the parameters evaluated. The same was true when we analyzed each group in isolation. Conclusions: In our sample, impulse oscillometry parameters did not differ between the students who had symptoms of rhinitis and those who did not.

Enquadramento: a reabilitação precoce é essencial na recuperação da pessoa com amputação major de etiologia vascular, mas o seu processo de reabilitação pós-operatório não está suficientemente estudado. Objetivo: caraterizar o processo de reabilitação pós-amputação major do membro inferior, por etiologia vascular. Metodologia: estudo exploratório e retrospetivo, com 40 pessoas com amputação major de etiologia vascular num hospital central português, entre 1 a 36 meses de pós-operatório. Foi aplicado um questionário para avaliar dados sociodemográficos, clínicos, reabilitação, adaptação ao domicílio, protetização e independência funcional. Os dados foram analisados através de estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: constatou-se que 92,5% realizaram reabilitação pós-operatória, 65% regressaram ao domicílio e 72,5% realizaram alterações no domicílio. A taxa de protetização foi de 15%, com uma média de espera de 16,33 meses (DP=9,50). Na alta, o Índice de Barthel foi de 42,88, aumentando gradualmente no pós-operatório ([1-5 meses]: M=62,50; [6-11 meses]: M=77,35; [12-23 meses]: M=78,75). Conclusão: a maioria realizou reabilitação e houve uma evolução positiva da independência funcional. As principais dificuldades sentidas e as alterações realizadas no domicílio prendem-se com os autocuidados de higiene, transferências e uso do sanitário. Evidenciou-se a importância do envolvimento da família no processo de reabilitação e na preparação do regresso a casa.

Abstract Objective: This study aims to present standard reference for values of maximum respiratory pressures of healthy schoolchildren, according to gender. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving healthy children aged 7–10 years. Data of body mass and height were evaluated to calculate body mass index (BMI). In addition, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and maximal expiratory pressure values were evaluated according to the American Thoracic Society. The maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and data of maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) obtained in the study showed normal distribution and curves were built by the Lambda–Mu–Sigma (LMS) method, as well as the values of MIP and MEP percentiles 3, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, and 97 for each gender. Results: MIP and MEP data were collected from 399 schoolchildren. All schoolchildren in the sample had adequate FEV1 and BMI. The study showed an increase in respiratory pressure values with age progression. The MIP and MEP values of girls were of 53.4±11.0 and 61.8±12.5cmH2O, respectively, and those of boys were 59.9±13.6 and 69.6±15.7cmH2O, respectively. Conclusions: Normal curves and percentiles were developed for MIP and MEP values of healthy schoolchildren. The extreme percentiles (3rd and 97th) were determined, and a specific graph was elaborated for each group. These graphs may help clinical follow-up and therapeutic monitoring of different pediatric populations.

RESUMO A fibrose cística (FC) é uma doença genética multissistêmica caracterizada por obstrução crônica que, associada a outras alterações pulmonares, pode comprometer a força muscular respiratória (FMR) e, em consequência, interferir no desempenho de atividades típicas da infância, alterando a qualidade de vida (QV) dessa população. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a relação entre FMR e QV de crianças e adolesceantes com FC. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, que incluiu pacientes com idades entre 6 e 14 anos, provenientes de um centro de referência no Brasil. Realizou-se avaliação antropométrica e da FMR, esta utilizando as pressões inspiratória (PImáx) e expiratória máximas (PEmáx) por meio da manovacuômetria digital (Globalmed® MVD300). Aplicou-se o Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire (QFC), questionário específico para a avaliar a QV nessa doença, nas versões para crianças (QFC-C) e para os pais ou responsáveis (QFC-R). A gravidade da doença foi classificada segundo o escore de Schwachman Doeurshuk (ESD). Dados sobre a colonização de bactérias e o genótipo da doença foram consultados por meio da análise dos prontuários. Analisou-se os dados por meio do software SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. Após o teste Shapiro-Wilk, aplicou-se o teste de correlação de Pearson ou Spearman. Em toda a análise foi adotado nível de significância de 5%. Participaram do estudo 28 crianças (15 meninos) com média de idade de 10,10±1,79 anos, as quais apresentaram FMR próxima ao predito e pontuações do QFC indicando boa QV. O ESD relacionou-se negativamente com domínio digestivo (p=0,03; rho=-0,400). A PEmáx apresentou correlação negativa com domínio corpo do QFC-R (p=0,002; rho=-0,426) e com domínio tratamento do QFC-C (p=0,01; rho=-0,453). A PImáx apresentou correlação positiva com os domínios físico (p=0,03; rho=0,410), emocional (p=≤0,001; rho=0,573) e tratamento (p=≤0,01; rho=-0,605) do QFC-C. A PImáx também mostrou correlação positiva com o domínio respiratório (p=0,01; rho=0,572) do QFC-R. Em conclusão, identificou-se associação entre domínios da QV e FMR, bem como com o ESD e aspectos nutricionais. Essa amostra apresentou valores de FMR acima do esperado e boa QV.
