Purpose The aim of this study was to provide consensus recommendations from residency program leaders on letters of intent (LOIs) written by postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency candidates. Methods A 3-round modified Delphi process was used to determine consensus among PGY1 residency program leaders across the country. A screening and demographic survey was utilized to ensure representation of panelists. The initial items for round 1 of the study were developed using existing published literature, with pilot testing by 2 residency program directors. For each round, respondents rated items on a 7-point Likert scale, with opportunities to provide qualitative feedback and modifications for lower-rated items. For future rounds, items were adjusted based on respondent feedback. Only items meeting predefined consensus were included in the final recommendations. Results A total of 254 pharmacists were invited to participate in the panel, with 41 completing the demographic and study consent survey. There were 35 participants in round 1, 34 of whom remained for rounds 2 and 3. The panel created 18 LOI recommendations for PGY1 residency candidates. Most recommendations were focused on the content of the LOI, while others were related to formatting. Conclusion The recommendations from this study can be employed by PGY1 pharmacy residency candidates to enhance their likelihood of success in the residency application process. Research plays a vital role in advancing the pharmacy profession and improving patient care. It is a fundamental skill for learners to develop during their training under guided mentorship. Incorporating learners into research and quality improvement (QI) projects can yield numerous benefits for the learner, mentor, and institution. Despite this, there are barriers to integrating learners into research and QI projects which may stem from institutions and individuals. To ensure success when engaging in the research process, strategies centered around clear communication and illustrating the value should be implemented. Successful research programs require planning strategically, setting clear expectations, providing mentorship, and remaining adaptable to overcome barriers encountered during the process. The purpose of this paper is to discuss barriers to incorporating learners into research and QI projects and provide both mentors and learners strategies, tips and examples for success with perspectives and opinions from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Adult Medicine and Education and Training Practice Research Networks. Introduction: Although letters of reference (LORs) are required for postgraduate year one (PGY1) residency applications and used to distinguish between candidates, an evaluation of residency program director (RPD) perceptions and values surrounding LORs has not been described. Objective: The aim of the study was to describe PGY1 RPDs' processes, values, and perceptions surrounding LORs. Methods: This was a cross‐sectional descriptive survey. After assessing content validity, the Education and Training Practice and Research Network (PRN) taskforce sent a 25‐item electronic survey to 1266 PGY1 RPDs. Survey questions captured program demographics, LOR requirements, processes for LOR review, and perceptions about the value of LORs. Two open‐ended questions solicited suggestions for LORs and the existing standardized form; responses were evaluated via thematic analysis. Results: A total of 291 (24%) programs completed the survey. LORs were rated as extremely or quite valuable by 82% of respondents and moderately valuable by 16% of respondents. Scoring rubrics for LOR evaluation were used by 79% of programs, and performance ratings were reported to impact interview consideration by a majority of programs. Accuracy, detailed comments, and inclusion of specific candidate strengths and areas for improvement were rated as extremely or quite important characteristics by 90% or more of respondents. Specific strengths were reported to be present in LORs more than half of the time by 81% of programs; however, accuracy, detailed comments, and inclusion of specific areas for improvement were only reported to be present about half the time or less by 41%, 63%, and 63% of respondents. Among 207 suggestions submitted to improve LOR utility, common themes included a desire for LOR authors to have candid discussions with candidates prior to letter writing, to contextualize their relationship with the candidate, and provide honest and specific assessments. Conclusion: LORs remain highly valued by PGY1 RPDs during application review. Several notable findings were observed, resulting in recommendations for LOR authors, residency applicants, and the standardized LOR form. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The introduction of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic in the Spring semester of 2020 sent many educational units, elementary to higher education, scrambling to move content to remote learning. Within a professional program, this push highlighted gaps or potential pitfalls in preparing students to enter the health care field. This article highlights lessons learned in remote teaching during the pandemic from six unique colleges and schools of pharmacy: Auburn University, Drake University, Purdue University, University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, and University of Utah. These lessons learned pertain to remote content delivery, student engagement, skill development, and assessments within the classroom and experiential settings. Within the classroom setting, the challenges, literature, personal experiences, and key recommendations for lecture‐based learning, group‐based learning, lab‐based learning, and assessments are described. Similarly, for the experiential setting, the challenges, literature, personal experiences, and key recommendations are also described, including training learners for remote patient care as well as examples for remote experiential activities and assessment. Background Within clinical education, e-learning facilitates a standardised learning experience to augment the clinical experience while enabling learner and teacher flexibility. With the shift of students from consumers to creators, student-generated content is expanding within higher education; however, there is sparse literature evaluating the impact of student-developed e-learning within clinical education. The aim of this study was to implement and evaluate a student-developed e-learning clinical module series within ambulatory care clinical pharmacy experiences. Methods Three clinical e-learning modules were developed by students for use prior to clinical experiences. E-learning modules were created by fourth-year professional pharmacy students and reviewed by pharmacy faculty members. A pre-/post-assessment was performed to evaluate knowledge comprehension before and after participating in the e-learning modules. Additionally, a survey on student perceptions of this educational tool was performed at the end of the clinical experience. Results Of the 31 students eligible for study inclusion, 94 per cent participated in both the pre- and post-assessments. The combined post-assessment score was significantly improved after participating in the student-developed e-learning modules (p = 0.008). The student perception survey demonstrated positive perceptions of e-learning within clinical education. Discussion Student-generated e-learning was able to enhance knowledge and was positively perceived by learners. Objective. To determine pharmacy students' preferences for and perceptions of in-person and video evaluations. Methods. A mixed methods survey was administered to 447 first-, second-, and third-year students enrolled in a public US Doctor of Pharmacy program. A survey instrument with 14 quantitative items and four qualitative items was used to measure student perceptions. Eight response choice items measured preferences. Paired t tests were used to compare students' perceptions. Independent t tests were used to compare perceptions between students who experienced and had not experienced video evaluations. Two researchers performed thematic content analysis of the qualitative responses. Results. Students (n=444, 99.3% response rate) perceived in-person evaluations more positively for all items except nervousness. Students who experienced video technology felt significantly more positive about video evaluations than students who had little or no experience using video technology on nine items. The students who experienced video technology felt significantly less positive toward video evaluations in terms of quality (1.24 vs. 0.83) and amount (1.14 vs 0.77) of written feedback. Although students valued the interaction with a larger, more diverse pool of evaluators that was made possible by video evaluations, they did not view video technology as applicable to their future practice. Conclusion. Students viewed in-person evaluations significantly more positively than video evaluations. This effect was mitigated by greater exposure to video technology, suggesting that concerns regarding video evaluations are based on conjecture rather than experience.
